• Why is purchasing Microsoft licences such a daunting task? [closed]

  I've spent 2 frustrating days jumping through hoops and browsing through different local e-shops for VS (Visual Studio) 2010 Pro. And WHS (Windows Home Server) FPP 2011 licenses. I found jack .. - or to be more precise, the closest I found in my country was WHS OEM 2011 licenses after multiple emails sent to individuals found on Microsoft partners page. Question being, why is it so difficult to get your hands on Microsoft licenses as an individual? Sure, you can get the latest end user operating systems from most shops, but when it comes to development tools or server software you are left dry. And companies that do sell licenses most of the time don't even put up pricing or a self service environment for buying the licenses, you need to have an hawk's eye for that shiny little Microsoft partner logo and spam through bunch of emails not knowing, if you can count on them to get the license or not. Sure, i could whip out my credit card and buy the VS 2010 license on the online Microsoft Shop. Well whippideegoddamndoo, they sell that, but they don't sell WHS 11 licenses. Why does a company make it so hard to buy their products? Let's not even talk about the licensing itself being a pain.

• Why doesn't Firefox cache my images and CSS

  I am using IIS7, I have already set up the following. What can we lean from this roadmap ? well, if you look carefully: Oracle is announcing Solaris 11 this year. The release date should be ... check OOW11 Solaris 10 updates should still be released in 2012 (remember, released in 2005). Check the Solaris lifecycle to understand how long is Solaris to stay side by side with Solaris 11. in 2011, a great 3x Single Strand improvement for the T-Series. Some thing great under preparation. Probably revealed at Oracle Open World 2011. Good news for ISVs ! in 2012, a great 6x Troughput improvement for the M-Serie ! How can this be done ? .... • Ubuntu 12.04 server froze during the first boot after it was installed.

  I installed Ubuntu server 12.04 to my new server and it failed on the first boot. It just stopped and I can't proceed any further. Server's specifications: Dell PowerEdge T620 CPU : Xeon E5-2665 2.4G x 2 RAM : 8GB RDIMM, 1333MHz x 12 HDD : 3TB Near Line SAS 7.2K x 8 RAID controller : PERC H710 GPU : NVIDIA Tesla C2075 x 4 I have a screenshot of the screen it stopped on but I cannot attach it because my privilege level is currently too low. ![freeze on boot][1] Here are the last messages while booting. • How to capture a Header or Trailer Count Value in a Flat File and Assign to a Variable

  Recently I had several questions concerning how to process files that carry a header and trailer in them. Typically those files are a product of data extract from non Microsoft products e.g. Oracle database encompassing various tables data where every row starts with an identifier. For example such a file data record could look like: HDR,INTF_01,OUT,TEST,3/9/2011 11:23 B1,121156789,DATA TEST DATA,2011-03-09 10:00:00,Y,TEST 18 10:00:44,2011-07-18 10:00:44,Y B2,TEST DATA,2011-03-18 10:00:44,Y B3,LEG 1 TEST DATA,TRAN TEST,N B4,LEG 2 TEST DATA,TRAN TEST,Y FTR,4,TEST END,3/9/2011 11:27 A developer is normally able to break the records using a Conditional Split Transformation component by employing an expression similar to Output1 -- SUBSTRING(Output1,1,2) == "B1" and so on, but often a verification is required after this step to check if the number of data records read corresponds to the number specified in the trailer record of the file. This portion sometimes stumbles some people so I decided to share what I came up with. As an aside, I want to mention that the approach I use is slightly more portable than some others I saw because I use a separate DFT that can be copied and pasted into a new SSIS package designer surface or re-used within the same package again and it can survive several trailer/footer records (!). See how a ready DFT can look: The first step is to create a Flat File Connection Manager and make sure you get the row split into columns like this: After you are done with the Flat File connection, move onto adding an aggregate which is in use to simply assign a value to a variable (here the aggregate is used to handle the possibility of multiple footers/headers): The next step is adding a Script Transformation as destination that requires very little coding. First, some variable setup: and finally the code: As you can see it is important to place your code into the appropriate routine in the script, otherwise the end result may not be as expected. As the last step you would use the regular Script Component to compare the variable value obtained from the DFT above to a package variable value obtained say via a Row Count component to determine if the file being processed has the right number of rows.

• .NET Dependency Management Systems

  I have some .NET projects that are starting to get large enough to merit looking into Dependency Management solutions, so we don't have to copy binaries from one project to another. Here's what I've found so far: NPanday is based on a port of Maven. I can't tell how recently it was worked on, but the last release was in May 2011. NuGet seems to be under active development, and it appears to have support directly from Microsoft. Some people complained that it "only addresses dependency resolution," but I don't know what else it should address, or whether it has added more features since that point. It does appear to have recently added the ability to import binaries as part of the build process so we don't have to commit them to our repositories. Refix appears to still be in Beta, after having received no attention since Sept 2011. Would somebody with recent experience using any of these dependency management tools (or any others that work well) share your experience? Is NuGet mature enough to use it for dependency management? If not, what does it lack?

  Hello. I have tried to wget a page with windows/mac, and the response is instant while the linux vesion needs to wait for 4 seconds before it shows the response. I just hope this can be solved. • South Florida Code Camp and Other Events

  My grandmother wanted me to make her a video when she heard I got MVP in SharePoint Server of one of my sessions.  I decided I haven’t visited in two years, so maybe I can do an in person session.  I googled around and found South Florida Code Camp, which will be Saturday, February 12th.  I will be doing a session at 9:50 in the morning on Silverlight just for my grandmother and whoever shows up.  Here is the link for more information: http://www.fladotnet.com/codecamp/. • Merging two sites into one, how to redirect from the domain that's going away?

  I haven't been able to find any existing questions that cover my exact issue, so here goes: My client wants her two sites (domain1.com and domain2.com) rolled into a single, new site under domain1.com. Once the site is ready on domain1.com, DNS for domain2.com would be pointed at the same server as domain1.com. I know how to do an htaccess rewrite rule that would make all domain2.com traffic map to a specific single page or directory within domain1.com. But that's not what the client wants. What she wants is for a bunch of specific pages on domain2.com to map to specific new pages on domain1.com. For example: domain2.com/index.php?pageid=58 GOES TO domain1.com/2011/04/somearticle domain2.com/index.php?pageid=92 GOES TO domain1.com/2011/03/differentname etc. I could put a bunch of 301 redirects in the htaccess on domain1.com, which would work fine. The problem is, the client doesn't want/need specific redirects for ALL the domain2.com pages, and if I just do 301 redirects, anybody who comes looking for a domain2.com page that I haven't built a specific redirect for will get a 404 error. So I need to use 301 redirects for some traffic, and a rewrite rule for any traffic that's not covered in the 301 redirects. How do I do sort of a blending of a rewrite rule and 301 redirects, all in the htaccess file for domain1.com? Is this possible? Is it as simple as putting the 301 redirects in the htaccess file first, then doing the rewrite rule? I'm guessing not.

• Oracle OpenWorld 2013 – Wrap up by Sven Bernhardt

  OOW 2013 is over and we’re heading home, so it is time to lean back and reflecting about the impressions we have from the conference. First of all: OOW was great! It was a pleasure to be a part of it. As already mentioned in our last blog article: It was the biggest OOW ever. Parallel to the conference the America’s Cup took place in San Francisco and the Oracle Team America won. Amazing job by the team and again congratulations from our side Back to the conference. The main topics for us are: Oracle SOA / BPM Suite 12c Adaptive Case management (ACM) Big Data Fast Data Cloud Mobile Below we will go a little more into detail, what are the key takeaways regarding the mentioned points: Oracle SOA / BPM Suite 12c During the five days at OOW, first details of the upcoming major release of Oracle SOA Suite 12c and Oracle BPM Suite 12c have been introduced. Some new key features are: Managed File Transfer (MFT) for transferring big files from a source to a target location Enhanced REST support by introducing a new REST binding Introduction of a generic cloud adapter, which can be used to connect to different cloud providers, like Salesforce Enhanced analytics with BAM, which has been totally reengineered (BAM Console now also runs in Firefox!) Introduction of templates (OSB pipelines, component templates, BPEL activities templates) EM as a single monitoring console OSB design-time integration into JDeveloper (Really great!) Enterprise modeling capabilities in BPM Composer These are only a few points from what is coming with 12c. We are really looking forward for the new realese to come out, because this seems to be really great stuff. The suite becomes more and more integrated. From 10g to 11g it was an evolution in terms of developing SOA-based applications. With 12c, Oracle continues it’s way – very impressive. Adaptive Case Management Another fantastic topic was Adaptive Case Management (ACM). The Oracle PMs did a great job especially at the demo grounds in showing the upcoming Case Management UI (will be available in 11g with the next BPM Suite MLR Patch), the roadmap and the differences between traditional business process modeling. They have been very busy during the conference because a lot of partners and customers have been interested Big Data Big Data is one of the current hype themes. Because of huge data amounts from different internal or external sources, the handling of these data becomes more and more challenging. Companies have a need for analyzing the data to optimize their business. The challenge is here: the amount of data is growing daily! To store and analyze the data efficiently, it is necessary to have a scalable and flexible infrastructure. Here it is important that hardware and software are engineered to work together. Therefore several new features of the Oracle Database 12c, like the new in-memory option, have been presented by Larry Ellison himself. From a hardware side new server machines like Fujitsu M10 or new processors, such as Oracle’s new M6-32 have been announced. The performance improvements, when using one of these hardware components in connection with the improved software solutions were really impressive. For more details about this, please take look at our previous blog post. Regarding Big Data, Oracle also introduced their Big Data architecture, which consists of: Oracle Big Data Appliance that is preconfigured with Hadoop Oracle Exdata which stores a huge amount of data efficently, to achieve optimal query performance Oracle Exalytics as a fast and scalable Business analytics system Analysis of the stored data can be performed using SQL, by streaming the data directly from Hadoop to an Oracle Database 12c. Alternatively the analysis can be directly implemented in Hadoop using “R”. In addition Oracle BI Tools can be used to analyze the data. Fast Data Fast Data is a complementary approach to Big Data. A huge amount of mostly unstructured data comes in via different channels with a high frequency. The analysis of these data streams is also important for companies, because the incoming data has to be analyzed regarding business-relevant patterns in real-time. Therefore these patterns must be identified efficiently and performant. To do so, in-memory grid solutions in combination with Oracle Coherence and Oracle Event Processing demonstrated very impressive how efficient real-time data processing can be. One example for Fast Data solutions that was shown during the OOW was the analysis of twitter streams regarding customer satisfaction. The feeds with negative words like “bad” or “worse” have been filtered and after a defined treshold has been reached in a certain timeframe, a business event was triggered. Cloud Another key trend in the IT market is of course Cloud Computing and what it means for companies and their businesses. Oracle announced their Cloud strategy and vision – companies can focus on their real business while all of the applications are available via Cloud. This also includes Oracle Database or Oracle Weblogic, so that companies can also build, deploy and run their own applications within the cloud. Three different approaches have been introduced: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Platform as a Service (PaaS) Software as a Service (SaaS) Using the IaaS approach only the infrastructure components will be managed in the Cloud. Customers will be very flexible regarding memory, storage or number of CPUs because those parameters can be adjusted elastically. The PaaS approach means that besides the infrastructure also the platforms (such as databases or application servers) necessary for running applications will be provided within the Cloud. Here customers can also decide, if installation and management of these infrastructure components should be done by Oracle. The SaaS approach describes the most complete one, hence all applications a company uses are managed in the Cloud. Oracle is planning to provide all of their applications, like ERP systems or HR applications, as Cloud services. In conclusion this seems to be a very forward-thinking strategy, which opens up new possibilities for customers to manage their infrastructure and applications in a flexible, scalable and future-oriented manner. As you can see, our OOW days have been very very interresting. We collected many helpful informations for our projects. • Firefox - setting/extension to toggle between showing & hiding of all images, without reloading the page

  I'm looking for a Firefox setting or extension that can easily toggle between showing and hiding of all images without reloading the page (similar to Opera's feature - the 'Show only cached images' feature is preferable, but optional in my case). I have found an extension that can show/hide images (Image-Show-Hide) but it needs to reload the page to show/hide the images. I prefer that the page not reload when unhiding images from a page previously set to hide all images.

Boot via USB with an Old BIOS Dear How-To Geek, I’m trying to repurpose some old computers by updating them with lightweight Linux distros but the BIOS on most of the machines is ancient and creaky. How ancient? It doesn’t even support booting from a USB device! I have a large flash drive that I’ve turned into a master installation tool for jobs like this but I can’t use it. The computers in question have USB ports; they just aren’t recognized during the boot process. What can I do? USB Bootin’ in Boise Dear USB Bootin’, It’s great you’re working to breathe life into old hardware! You’ve run into one of the limitations of older BIOSes, USB was around but nobody was thinking about booting off of it. Fortunately if you have a computer old enough to have that kind of BIOS it’s likely to also has a floppy drive or a CDROM drive. While you could make a bootable CDROM for your application we understand that you want to keep using the master USB installer you’ve made. In light of that we recommend PLoP Boot Manager. Think of it like a boot manager for your boot manager. Using it you can create a bootable floppy or CDROM that will enable USB booting of your master USB drive. Snapping Windows to Preset Coordinates Dear How-To Geek, Once upon a time I had a company laptop that came with a little utility that snapped windows to preset areas of the screen. This was long before the snap-to-side features in Windows 7. You could essentially configure your screen into a grid pattern of your choosing and then windows would neatly snap into those grids. I have no idea what it was called or if was anymore than a gimmick from the computer manufacturer, but I’d really like to have it on my new computer! • Silverlight 5 Hosting :: Features in Silverlight 5 and Release Date

  Silverlight 5 is finally announced in the Silverlight FireStarter Event on the 2nd December, 2010. This new version of Silverlight which was earlier labeled as 'Future of Microsoft Silverlight' has now come much closer to go live as the first Silverlight 5 Beta version is expected to be shipped during the early months of 2011. However for the full fledged and the final release of Silverlight 5, we have to wait many more months as the same is likely to be made available within the Q3 2011. As would have been usually expected, this latest edition would feature many new capabilities thereby extending the developer productivity to a whole new dimension of premium media experience and feature-rich business applications. It comes along with many new feature updates as well as the inclusion of new technologies to improve the standard of the Silverlight applications which are now fine-tuned to produce next generation business and media solutions that is capable to meet the requirements of the advanced web-based app development. The Silverlight 5 is all set to replace the previous fourth version which now includes more than forty new features while also dropping various deprecated elements that was prevalent earlier. It has brought around some major performance enhancements and also included better support for various other tools and technologies. Silverlight 5 : Business Application Development The application development standard has been extended with more possibilities by bringing forth new and useful technologies and also reviving the existing methods to work better than what it was used to. From the UI improvements to advanced technical aspects, the Silverlight 5 scores high on all grounds to produce great next generation business delivered applications by putting in more creativity and resourceful touch to all the apps being produced with it. - The WPF feature of Silverlight is made more effective by introducing new standards of Databinding which is intended to improve the productivity standards of the Silverlight application developer.
