  • solaris 10 - custom jumpstart menu.lst

    - by romant
Is it possible to include the config.tar (encompasses the rules before/after scripts…) instead of on a web server served through http:// - but included no the cdrom itself. Namely am trying to do something along the lines of: title Solaris kernel$ /boot/multiboot kernel/$ISADIR/unix install cdrom:/config/config.tar dhcp -B install_media=cdrom module$ /boot/$ISADIR/x86.miniroot Yet it seems Solaris only supports HTTP or NFS as the source for config.tar - and not the CDROM itself. Any ideas? Thank you.

  • Linux software Raid 10 no superblock

    - by Shoshomiga
I have a software raid 10 with 6 x 2tb hard drives (raid 1 for /boot), ubuntu 10.04 is the os. I had a raid controller failure that put 2 drives out of sync, crashed the system and initially the os didnt boot up and went into initramfs instead, saying that drives were busy but I eventually managed to bring the raid up by stopping and assembling the drives. The os booted up and said that there were filesystem errors, I chose to ignore because it would remount the fs in read-only mode if there was a problem. Everything seemed to be working fine and the 2 drives started to rebuild, I was sure that it was a sata controller failure because I had dma errors in my log files. The os crashed soon after that with ext errors. Now its not bringing up the raid, it says that there is no superblock on /dev/sda2. I tried to reassemble manually with all the device names but it still would not bring up the raid 10 complaining about the missing superblock on sda2, and sda1 was also dropped from the raid 1. When I did examine on the raid10 it says that 1 of the initially failed drives is a spare, the other is spare rebuilding and sda2 is removed. It seems that sda decided to fail right when the system was vulnerable to it because when I boot up a live cd it spews out sda unrecoverable read failures. I have been trying to fix this all week but I'm not sure where to go with this now, I ordered more hard drives because I didn't have a complete backup, but its too late for that now and the only thing I could do is mirror all the hard drives onto the new ones (I'm not sure whether sda was mirrored without errors). On the internet I read that you can recover from this by recreating the array with the same options as when it was made, however because sda is failing I cant use it and I don't want to risk using its mirror instead, so I'm waiting to get another hard drive. I'm also not sure whether to include the out of sync drives or if I can actually use those instead to recover the array. Sorry if this is a mess to read but I've been trying to fix this all day and its late at night now, any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. I also did a memtest and changed the motherboard in addition to everything else. • Data recovery for Mac

    - by josh3736
I've got a Mac that won't boot and I'd like to recover whatever data I can before wiping the hard drive and reinstalling. I'm looking for something similar to TRK (which is Windows-centric) — boot from CD, mount the hard drive, and copy to a network share. I just noticed TRK does appear to support HFS+; has anyone had success with this?

  • Forgotten LUKS passphrase

    - by Ansh David
i am stuck with a big problem. I have encrypted my linux drive with LUKS and now I can't remember it. During boot, it prompts me for the passphrase, but I went into troubleshooting mode and deleted the entry from /etc/crypttab so at least I can boot now into my account but that doesn't solve the problem. I can't access my drive /dev/sda5. Can someone please show me a way to crack the passphrase or is there no way around it.

  • MTD mtd3ro backup returns BCH decoding failed

    - by saeed144
While doing a kernel backup of an mtd (Memory Technology Device) from /dev/mtd/mtd3ro of a TI board gives many "BCH decoding failed", Here are system info #cat /proc/mtd dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 00080000 00020000 "X-Loader" mtd1: 00140000 00020000 "U-Boot" mtd2: 000c0000 00020000 "U-Boot Env" mtd3: 00500000 00020000 "Kernel" mtd4: 1f880000 00020000 "File System" here is the method used, dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd3ro of=/data/local/tmp/mtd3.bin doing a cat also returns the same error, and here is the error, BCH decoding failed BCH decoding failed yes, the destination has enough space ;) tell me what do you think? • What's the reason to break HDD to few partitions for MDADM+LVM2?

    - by archer
I'm using 2 HDDs each 1TB in size. I'm going to create MDADM+LVM2 over them. Initially I though about this partition layout: /dev/sda1 - 1Gb (boot) /dev/sda2 - 500Gb (md0) /dev/sda3 - 499Gb (md1) /dev/sdb1 - 1Gb (boot) /dev/sdb2 - 500Gb (md0) /dev/sdb3 - 499Gb (md1) md0 is going to be raid0 and md1 is going to be raid1 however, I found some info that this would be better to break each drive to more partitions (lets say 10 partitions 100Gb in size each). What's the reason of doing that?

  • FreeBSD with 64 CPUs

    - by Brett
I have a quad socket octo-core system running FreeBSD. Currently, I need to turn off HyperThreading to get it to boot, as FreeBSD only supports 32 CPUs. There were some patches made awhile ago against a trunk version of 8.1, but even after modifying them slightly to work and compile with 8.1-RELEASE, the machine wouldn't boot. Has there been any progress here? I can't find much good information about it, Google thinks I'm talking about 64-bit architecture and not literally 64 CPUs.

  • How to monitor IO svctm with every 5 mins frequency using nagios?

    - by sabya
I want to collect samples of iostat's svctm, await every 5 mins from all of my servers and store them in nagios. I want to get the values for what is happening in every 5 minutes (not since boot time, iostat's first output gives values since boot time). How can I do it in nagios? EDIT The tps should NOT be calculated #of transactions happened since reboot divided by uptime. What I want is # of transferred happened in last X mins divided X*60.

  • Virtual Hard Drive not booting - VMWare

    - by Chloraphil
I have a .vmdk (VMWare hard disk) file that I cannot use as the lone disk in a new virtual machine. If I attach it to an existing virtual machine then it works fine. It has Windows Server 2003 on it. When I attempt to boot the new VM it attempts a network boot. EDIT: VMWare Workstation 6.5 I could not find a PXE option in the settings, and I did look in the VM config file for "PXE" but did not find one.

  • Access to MediaShield RAID utility

    - by Serg
I'm using RAID-1 configuration on a PC which will be accessible by many people who are not very experienced with computers. So I'd want to restrict access to MediaShield RAID configuration utility with pops-up on every boot proposing to press F10 button. Is there a way to hide that boot message or protect the utility with a password?

  • Windows 8 install fails

    - by HackToHell
I have the windows 8 release preview 32 bit iso and it fails to install when booted out of a flash drive, it copies the files and the boot loader installs but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 the first time, it simply keeps on spinning forever. I did a vhd install of Windows 8 developer preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present.

  • How to use process monitor to view or log a windows login?

    - by leeand00
We're having some issues with Windows 7 Roaming profiles and I was reading here that the login process can be monitored using process monitor. "There are a couple of ways to configure Process Monitor to record logon operations: one is to use Sysinternals PsExec to launch it in the session 0 so that it survives the logoff and subsequent logon and another is to use the boot logging feature to capture activity from early in the boot, including the logon." How does one do either of these options using process monitor to find out what is happening during a user login?

    - by abhinole
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 (dual-boot) on my laptop. For some reasons I want some more space in my Ubuntu partition.I have installed gParted in Ubuntu. Now is it recommended to get this required extra space from Windows 7 drive (*where my linux is installed *) directly using gParted? Will it cause damage to my boot loader or my data on the partition from where I wish to grab some space? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • How do I keep a server connected as a volume after sleep?

    - by Jason
This would be in OS X 10.6... I know I can connect a server share as a volume and do so via a script so every time I boot up it gets mapped. How can I make sure that same share is mapped after my computer comes out of sleep mode? It seems like the connection gets dropped. Can the same process map the drive for me when I boot up?

  • Why does my computer restart immediately after I shut it down?

    - by Youri
After I shut down my computer it automatically starts up again. I've tried re-installing Windows 7 64-bit, resetting my BIOS, installing the newest drivers and also changing the boot and recovery settings. The motherboard I have is a MSI P67A-GD65 (B3), and the processor is a Intel Core i7-2600K. How can I shut down my computer and have it stay off? Also, what is causing it to immediately boot back up?
