• How to use QSerialDevice in Qt?

  Hello, I am trying to use QSerialDevice in Qt to get a connection to my serial port. I also tried QextSerialPort before (which works on Windows Vista but unfortunately not on Windows XP ..) but I need an API which supports XP, Vista and Win7... I build the library and configured it this way: CONFIG += dll CONFIG += debug I did use the current version from SVN (0.2.0 - 2010-04-05) and the 0.2.0 zip package. After building the library I did copy it to my Qt Libdir (C:\Qt\2009.05\qt\lib) and also to C:\Windows\system32. Now I try to link against the lib in my project file: LIBS += -lqserialdevice I import the needed header (abstractserial.h) and use my own AbstractSerial like this: // Initialize this->serialPort->setDeviceName("COM1"); if (!this->serialPort->open(QIODevice::ReadWrite | QIODevice::Unbuffered)) qWarning() << "Error" << this->serialPort->errorString(); // Configure SerialPort this->serialPort->setBaudRate(AbstractSerial::BaudRate4800); this->serialPort->setDataBits(AbstractSerial::DataBits8); this->serialPort->setFlowControl(AbstractSerial::FlowControlOff); this->serialPort->setParity(AbstractSerial::ParityNone); this->serialPort->setStopBits(AbstractSerial::StopBits1); The problem is, that if I run my application, it crashes immediately with exit code -1073741515 (application failed to initialize properly). This is the same error I got using QextSerialPort under Windows XP (it worked with Windows Vista). If I build the QSerialDevice lib with release config and also my program, it crashes immediately but with exit code -1073741819 Can someone help me with this program or with another solution of getting a serial port to work with Qt (maybe another API or something?) Otherwise I have to use Windows API functions which would mean that my program won't work with UNIX systems.. • Using a Mac for cross platform development?

  Who uses Macs for cross-platform development? By cross platform I essentially mean you can compile to target Windows or Unix (not necessarily both at the same time). I understand that this also has a lot to do with writing portable code, but I am more interested in people's experience with Mac OS X to develop software. I understand that there are a range of IDEs to choose from, I would probably use Eclipse (I like the GCC toolchain) however Xcode seems to be quite popular. Could it be used as described above? At a pinch I could always virtualise with VirtualBox or VMware Player or parallels to use Visual Studio (or dual boot for that matter). Having said that I am open to any other suggested compilers (with preferably an IDE that uses GCC.) Also with the range of Macs available, which one would you recommend? I would prefer a laptop (as I already have a desktop) but am unsure of reasonable specifications. If you are currently using a Mac to do development, I would love to hear what you develop on your Mac and what you like and don't like about it. I would primarily be developing in C/C++/Java. I am also looking to experiment with Boost and Qt, so I'm interested in hearing about any (potential) compatibility issues. If you have any other tips I'd love you hear what you have to say.

  I am trying to display my events from a MySQL database. I'm using the events function. My XML file being returned is pretty basic. I've looked at all of the FullCalendar questions and most of them talk about JSON and point to the documentation for JSON. I can't use JSON. I have to go XML. Can you tell me where I'm off. • Newbie, deciding Python or Erlang

  Hi Guys, I'm a Administrator (unix, Linux and some windows apps such as Exchange) by experience and have never worked on any programming language besides C# and scripting on Bash and lately on powershell. I'm starting out as a service provider and using multiple network/server monitoring tools based on open source (nagios, opennms etc) in order to monitor them. At this moment, being inspired by a design that I came up with, to do more than what is available with the open source at this time, I would like to start programming and test some of these ideas. The requirement is that a server software that captures a stream of data and store them in a database(CouchDB or MongoDB preferably) and the client side (agent installed on a server) would be sending this stream of data on a schedule of every 10 minutes or so. For these two core ideas, I have been reading about Python and Erlang besides ruby. I do plan to use either Amazon or Rackspace where the server platform would run. This gives me the scalability needed when we have more customers with many servers. For that reason alone, I thought Erlang was a better fit(I could be totally wrong, new to this game) and I understand that Erlang has limited support in some ways compared to Ruby or Python. But also I'm totally new to the programming realm of things and any advise would be appreciated grately. Jo

  Hello: I've been looking around the internet trying to find a good step by step guide to extend Python in Windows, and I haven't been able to find something for my skill level. let's say you have some c code that looks like this: #include <stdio.h> #include <math.h> double valuex(float value, double rate, double timex) { float value; double rate, timex; return value / double pow ((1 + rate), (timex)); } and you want to turn that into a Python 3 module for use on a windows (64bit if that makes a difference) system. How would you go about doing that? I've looked up SWIG and Pyrex and in both circumstances they seem geared towards the unix user. With Pyrex I am not sure if it works with Python 3. I'm just trying to learn the basics of programing, using some practical examples. Lastly, if there is a good book that someone can recommend for learning to extend, I would greatly appreciate it.   I'm hoping for a bit of a "simpletons" demo\explanation for using Lazarus\Freepascal JSON parsing. I've asked a question here but all the replies are "read this" and none of them are really helping me get a grasp because the examples are bit too in-depth and I'm seeking a very simple example to help me understand how it works. In brief, my program reads an untyped binary file in chunks of 4096 bytes. The raw data then gets converted to ASCII and stored in a string. It then goes through the variable looking for certain patterns, which, it turned out, are JSON data structures.   Hi guys, I'm feeling completely stupid because I've spent two hours solving task which should be very simple and which I solved many times before. But now I'm not even sure in which direction to dig. I fail to fetch static content using ajax from local servers (Apache and Mongrel). I get responses 200 and 206 (depending on the server), empty response text (although Content-Length header is always correct), firebug shows request in red. Javascript is very generic, I'm getting same results even here: http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/tryit.asp?filename=tryajax_first (just change document location to 'http://localhost:3000/whatever') So, it's probably not the cause. • recent cvs cygwin newline windows problems. How to solve?

  Hi all, One of our projects still uses CVS. Recently (sometime in the past year) the Cygwin cvs client (currently using 1.12.13) has given me problems when I update. I suspect the problem stems from windows/unix newline differences. It worked for years without a problem. Here are the symptoms. When I update from the command line, I see messages like these: "no such repository" messages /cvshome : no such repository False-"Modified" due to newline differences M java/com/foo/ekm/value/EkmContainerInstance.java False-"Conflicts" cvs update: Updating java/com/foo/ekm/value/XWiki cvs update: move away `java/com/foo/ekm/value/XWiki/XWikiContainerInstance.java'; it is in the way C java/com/foo/ekm/value/XWiki/XWikiContainerInstance.java Note the for the 'no such repository' error, I found that cd-ing into the 'CVS/' folder and running 'dos2unix Root' updates correctly. I'm not sure how this file (or Repository or Entries) gets whacked. I don't remember when these problems started. I have a workaround: updating from our IDE (Intellij Idea) always succeeds Yes, I know we should switch to (svn|git|mercurial), but does anyone know what causes these problems? when they were introduced? workarounds? thanks, bill

• Problems compiling peazip on OSX

  I'm having some problems with compiling Peazip on OSX (10.6). I emailed the Peazip developer and he said he probably couldn't help me too much as the error seems to be OSX specific and he doesn't have access to an OSX machine any more. The compiler I'm using is Lazarus as the source is in Pascal. • NPTL Default Stack Size Problem

  Hello, I am developing a multithread modular application using C programming language and NPTL 2.6. For each plugin, a POSIX thread is created. The problem is each thread has its own stack area, since default stack size depends on user's choice, this may results in huge memory consumption in some cases. My questions are: 1-) Is there any portable(between UNIX variants) way to change (default)thread stack size after starting application(before creating thread of course)? 2-) Is it possible to use same stack area for every thread? 3-) Is it possible completely disable stack for threads without much pain?

• Proggraming a VPN, Authontication stage - RFC not clear enough

  I have a custom build of a unix OS. My task: Adding an IPSec to the OS. I am working on Phase I, done sending the first 2 packets. what I am trying to do now is making the Identefication Payload. I've been reading RFC 2409 (Apendix B) which discuss the keying materials (SKEYID, SKEYID_d, SKEYID_a, SKEYID_e and the IV making). Now, I use SHA1 for authontication and thus I use HMAC-SHA1 & my encryption algorithem is AES 256bit. The real problem is that the RFC is not clear enough of what should I do regarding the PRF. It says: "Use of negotiated PRFs may require the PRF output to be expanded due to the PRF feedback mechanism employed by this document." I use SHA1, does it mean I do not negotiate a PRF? In my opinion, AES is the only algorithm that needs expention (a fixed length of 256bit), so, do i need to expand only the SKEYID_e? If you happen to know a clearer, though relible, source then the RFC please post a link. Thanks in advance!

• Evaluation of environment variables in command run by Java's Runtime.exec()

  Hi, I have a scenarios where I have a Java "agent" that runs on a couple of platforms (specifically Windows, Solaris & AIX). I'd like to factor out the differences in filesystem structure by using environment variables in the command line I execute. As far as I can tell there is no way to get the Runtime.exec() method to resolve/evaluate any environment variables referenced in the command String (or array of Strings). I know that if push comes to shove I can write some code to pre-process the command String(s) and resolve enviroment variables by hand (using getEnv() etc). However I'm wondering if there is a smarter way to do this since I'm sure I'm not the only person wanting to do this and I'm sure there are pitfalls in "knocking up" my own implementation. Your guidance and suggestions are most welcome. edit: I would like to refer to environment variables in the command string using some consistent notation such as $VAR and/or %VAR%. Not fussed which. edit: To be clear I'd like to be able to execute a command such as: perl $SCRIPT_ROOT/somePerlScript.pl args on Windows and Unix hosts using Runtime.exec(). I specify the command in config file that describes a list of jobs to run and it has to be able to work cross platform, hence my thought that an environment variable would be useful to factor out the filesystem differences (/home/username/scripts vs C:\foo\scripts). • POSIX AIO Library and Callback Handlers

  According to the documentation on aio_read/write, there are basically 2 ways that the AIO library can inform your application that an async file I/O operation has completed. Either 1) you can use a signal, 2) you can use a callback function I think that callback functions are vastly preferable to signals, and would probably be much easier to integrate into higher-level multi-threaded libraries. Unfortunately, the documentation for this functionality is a mess to say the least. Some sources, such as the man page for the sigevent struct, indicate that you need to set the sigev_notify data member in the sigevent struct to SIGEV_CALLBACK and then provide a function handler. Presumably, the handler is invoked in the same thread. Other documentation indicates you need to set sigev_notify to SIGEV_THREAD, which will invoke the callback handler in a newly created thread. In any case, on my Linux system (Ubuntu with a 2.6.28 kernel) SIGEV_CALLBACK doesn't seem to be defined anywhere, but SIGEV_THREAD works as advertised. Unfortunately, creating a new thread to invoke the callback handler seems really inefficient, especially if you need to invoke many handlers. It would be better to use an existing pool of threads, similar to the way most network I/O event demultiplexers work. Some versions of UNIX, such as QNX, include a SIGEV_SIGNAL_THREAD flag, which allows you to invoke handlers using a specified existing thread, but this doesn't seem to be available on Linux, nor does it seem to even be a part of the POSIX standard. So, is it possible to use the POSIX AIO library in a way that invokes user handlers in a pre-allocated background thread/threadpool, rather than creating/destroying a new thread everytime a handler is invoked?

• Advice for Windows XP Scripting, WSH versus PowerShell

  After much experience scripting in the Unix/Linux open-source world, using languages such as Bourne Shell, Perl, Python, and Ruby, I now find myself needing to do some Windows XP admin scripting. It appears that the legacy environment is Windows Script Host (WSH), which can use various scripting languages, but the primary language is VBScript, and is based on COM objects. However, the future appears to be Windows PowerShell, which is based on .NET. I haven't done Basic since Applesoft in the 70s, so I'm not keen on learning VBScript, although I did learn enough to write a small script to mount network drives. If I'm going to spend time to really learn this, I'm leaning towards investing my time in the .NET PowerShell environment, if it truly is the future. I did some C# Windows Forms programming a couple of years ago, so I have some exposure to .NET, which also makes PowerShell attractive. Understanding that no one has a crystal ball to predict the future of Microsoft, I would like hear from anyone who is a PowerShell user and thinks it's worthwhile, or if there is anyone that knows of serious drawbacks to PowerShell, and recommends that I stay away from it. Update: I ended up using WSH/VBScript for a particular script that I am installing as a startup script on user's Windows XP workstations. All I have to do is copy it to their Startup folder, and I'm done. However, I only learned enough WSH to accomplish this one job. I am glad to see that PowerShell is the future, and when I have more complicated scripting tasks, I'll to turn PowerShell.

• RSA Decrypting a string in C# which was encrypted with openssl in php 5.3.2

  maybe someone can clear me up. I have been surfing on this a while now. I used openssl from console to create a root certificate for me (privatekey.pem, publickey.pem, mycert.pem, mycertprivatekey.pfx). See the end of this text on how. The problem is still to get a string encrypted on the PHP side to be decrypted on the C# side with RSACryptoServiceProvider. Any ideas? PHP side I used the publickey.pem to read it into php: $server_public_key = openssl_pkey_get_public(file_get_contents("C:\publickey.pem")); // rsa encrypt openssl_public_encrypt("123", $encrypted, $server_public_key); and the privatekey.pem to check if it works: openssl_private_decrypt($encrypted, $decrypted, openssl_get_privatekey(file_get_contents("C:\privatekey.pem"))); Coming to the conclusion, that encryption/decryption works fine on the php side with these openssl root certificate files. • Server reporting incorrect mime type for css files

  We have a VPS server that we host our websites on. I have written a CMS using CodeIgniter. On one of the interfaces, I am attempting to upload a css file to the system. This worked correctly when we had it hosted on shared hosting. Since we've moved it to the VPS, I am getting an "incorrect filetype" error. It all comes down to the fact that the server is reporting a mime type of text/x-c for the css file rather than text/css. I logged in via shell and ran the following command on an existing valid css file (to make sure it wasn't an issue with either CodeIgniter or with php). file --brief --mime 'filename.css' 2>&1 The server gave me the following in response to my command: text/x-c; charset=us-ascii My question ... is there some sort of server setting that I need to tweak to get the server to correctly identify the css file as text/css? Do I just have to add a mime type for the css files to the server? I found the mime types file (etc/mime.types), and it just hase video types and a couple other that I have no idea what they are. There is nothing in there for css or images or html files. Unless I'm looking in the wrong spot. I'm not a server person, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. Some server specs: Apache/2.2.22 (Unix) php 5.3.13 Server API = CGI/FastCGI the fileinfo php extension appears to be disabled

• Perl Lingua giving weird error on install

  I am trying to install perl Lingua onto a unix system (ubuntu, latest version). Of course I am root. when I go into the package to install using 'perl Makefile.pl' I get this dumb error: [root@csisl27 Lingua-Lid-0.01]# perl Makefile.PL /opt/ls//lib does not exist at Makefile.PL line 48. • Cannot find CFML template for custom tag

  Hi folks, I am not a ColdFusion coder. Doing a favor for a friend who ported his CF site from a Windows server to Unix on GoDaddy. Site is displaying error: Cannot find CFML template for custom tag jstk. ColdFusion attempted looking in the tree of installed custom tags but did not find a custom tag with this name. The site as I found it has at document root /CustomTags with the jstk.cfm file and a set of files in cf_jstk My Googling located this You must store custom tag pages in any one of the following: The same directory as the calling page; The cfusion\CustomTags directory; A subdirectory of the cfusion\CustomTags directory; A directory that you specify in the ColdFusion Administrator So I have Tried creating placing /CustomTags in /cfusion/CustomTags Tried copying /cfusion/CustomTags to above document root Tried copying jstk.cfm and subfolders into same directory as calling file(index.cfm). Update: Per GoDaddy support I have also tried adding the following to no effect: Can any one give me some tips on this or should I just tell my guy to look for a CF coder? Thanks! JG
