• apt-get command problem

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit in hp pavilion dv6 laptop (AMD Processor) after upgrade and reboot, the desktop doesn't start and at cui (cltr + alt + f1) I login to my user and following error shows: apt-config :/lib/i386-linux-gnu/lib.so.6:version 'GLIBC_2.17' NOT FOUND (required by /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6) when I type sudo apt-get command same error shows up and apt-get command doesn't work. All I have is character user interface. please help me.

• Why make JavaScript class based?

  JavaScript is a prototype language. To turn it into a class based language adds little value? I am not talking about best-practice here. I remember reading an article from way back, which claimed that the class-based worldview is perceivably more flawed than the one of prototypes. I am resisting to use the class-based jQuery add-on and other attempts at faciliating class-based JavaScript. • Desktop interface crashes after software updates

  Recently, after installing Ubuntu software updates on the evening of December 7th, 2012, my desktop interface crashes regularly leaving me with a command line screen with a long string of automated commands showing (I assume what goes on behind the pretty desktop). At first, I thought it was only crashing whenever I played DirectX games in WINE, but now it crashes if I open the native Firefox browser or if it's doing nothing at all but sitting there. Apport attempts to report the bugs after restart, but often they crash as well. I've done a SMART check on the hard drive, and everything report OK. No read errors, no bad sectors. I am using an Acer Extensa 4620Z Memory: 2.0 GiB Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz x 2 GraphicsL: Intel 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2 OS: Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit Disk: 116.0 GB with 33.4 GB Available

  I have Natty installed. Howto allow shutdown/restart if other user logged in another terminal, for example using CTRL-ALT-DEL? I've tried to add the following lines in /etc/sudoers: user ALL=(root)NOPASSWD:/sbin/reboot user ALL=(root)NOPASSWD:/sbin/halt user ALL=(root)NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown and sudo chmod 750 /sbin/shutdown sudo chmod 750 /sbin/reboot or create /etc/shutdown.allow but it doesn't help and I still get Gnome login mask.

• Number of processes named 'doodle'

  I have ben using 12.10 for a few days. Just upgraded it from 12.04. This comp of mine, which has a 4GB RAM and 64 bit intel processor, just goes slow randomly. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F6 and login through a command prompt, I see a number of processes using - ps -A I get many instances of a process named 'doodle' running. So many that I have to 'pkill' them by hand. Any idea why this is happening?

As the current OS is Ubunu 13.10 the way to configure the lightdm greeter is rather strange, can't find any solution in greeter configs. More annoying thing is that Mr.LDM seems to have password very hard to guess so I can't login to this "account". Can you help me to find source of this problem and find the solution?

• SQL Azure Security: DoS Part II

  Ah!  When you shoot yourself in the foot... a few times... it hurts! That's what I did on Sunday, to learn more about the behavior of the SQL Azure Denial Of Service prevention feature. This article is a short follow up to my last post on this feature. In this post, I will outline some of the lessons learned that were the result of testing the behavior of SQL Azure from two machines. From the standpoint of SQL Azure, they look like one machine since they are behind a NAT. All logins affected The first thing to note is that all the logins are affected. If you lock yourself out to a specific database, none of the logins will work on that database. In fact the database size becomes "--" in the SQL Azure Portal.   Less than 100 sessions I was able to see 50+ sessions being made in SQL Azure (by looking at sys.dm_exec_sessions) before being locked out. The the DoS feature appears to be triggered in part by the number of open sessions. I could not determine if the lockout is triggered by the speed at which connection requests are made however.   Other Databases Unaffected This was interesting... the DoS feature works at the database level. Other databases were available for me to use.   Just Wait Initially I thought that going through SQL Azure and connecting from there would reset the database and allow me to connect again. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case. You will have to wait. And the more you lock yourself out, the more you will have to wait... The first time the database became available again within 30 seconds or so; the second time within 2-3 minutes and the third time... within 2-3 hours...   Successful Logins The DoS feature appears to engage only for valid logins. If you have a login failure, it doesn't seem to count. I ran a test with over 100 login failures without being locked.

  Through the normal processes I enter my shared music folder on my Windows computer, i.e.: Places Network Windows pc Music. After rebooting my Ubuntu laptop, however, this connection isn't automatically set again. My question: How do I get Ubuntu to automatically connect to that shared folder after login (while first checking whether the Windows computer is 'online')? This because I added the folder to the Banshee Library, and I currently first have to go to the shared folder manually before Banshee can play the files.

• What are best practices for testing programs with stochastic behavior?

  Doing R&D work, I often find myself writing programs that have some large degree of randomness in their behavior. For example, when I work in Genetic Programming, I often write programs that generate and execute arbitrary random source code. A problem with testing such code is that bugs are often intermittent and can be very hard to reproduce. This goes beyond just setting a random seed to the same value and starting execution over. For instance, code might read a message from the kernal ring buffer, and then make conditional jumps on the message contents. Naturally, the ring buffer's state will have changed when one later attempts to reproduce the issue. Even though this behavior is a feature it can trigger other code in unexpected ways, and thus often reveals bugs that unit tests (or human testers) don't find. Are there established best practices for testing systems of this sort? If so, some references would be very helpful. If not, any other suggestions are welcome!

Even the login screen has my Desktop background. However it is a little jarring when I shut down/use grubby and its in the default maroon and white scheme. Is there any way to change this to make it more similar to my own color scheme in terminal?

• Macbook Air freezes while running Ubuntu 13.10

  Ok folks I'm trying to setup my Macbook Air to run Ubuntu 13.10 (note: I normally using Kubuntu but currently running Ubuntu). I have run all of the updates for the system as of this posting. This happens regardless of the application I have open (Firefox, Terminal, Software Updater). The system will freeze, become unresponsive and then kick me back to the login screen. I typed in adduser then username and also tried useradd then username but it does seem to add a user but when i login i only get a dollar sign instead of user@servername. I have tried adding rules to allow me into the sudo for that username but i just can't work out why i only get the dollar sign. • Very frequent system problems since 12.10 upgrade

  Since I recently upgrade my 12.04 install to 12.10, there is loads more instability generally. I have captured just the latest example - often occurring just after startup and login. Other random times, similar things happen - not always the same executable is reported - might be many different problems. Is everyone finding 12.10 a bit unstable (in which case I can hope for fixes to filter through over the coming months)?
