• Linux boot - stop the kernel switching to a new framebuffer mode clearing output

  I'm working on an embedded system (based onUbuntu 12.04 LTS) and I'm customizing its kernel. I'm having some problem with upstart, mountall and plymouth. Nothing unsolvable I suppose, but the real problem is that I can't diagnose properly what's going on because the kernel (or maybe plymouth) changes the video mode in the middle of the boot process. This completely wipes entire lines of log and prevents any debugging of kernel misconfigurations. • Can I charge USB devices from a powered hub that isn't connected to a PC?

  This will probably sound familiar to most of you... In my home, we have a whole bunch of devices that can be charged via USB (two iPhones, a BlackBerry, an iPod Touch, etc ad nauseam). We also have a bunch of USB chargers, each of which has a single USB port on it. I'd like to have something permanently connected to AC power with at least 4 USB ports on it, so we can just plug devices in and don't need to go looking for a free outlet. So here's the question: if I buy a powered USB hub, will that do the job even if I don't connect it to a PC? Ideally if you have a hub that you can personally verify will be suitable, let me know the manufacturer and model :-) Thanks in advance! • Mac OSX - looking for software for notes, snippets, ideas, etc.

  I have the following requirements: Mobile accessibility: Either a complimentary iphone app to sync with, or DropBox or Google Docs syncing or equivalent so I can use other mobile note applications to edit notes remotely. Minimally some form of markup, but ideally something I can drag and drop images into and do some formatting. Rich Text support is reasonable. Hierarchical organization, AKA outlining. Internal (note to note) linking. I like to cross reference items and thoughts internally and the relationships aren't always hierarchical. These were closest to what I was looking for but, as far as I can tell, suffer from the noted flaws: Mori : No mobile solution. EagleFiler : No item hierarchy. MacJournal : No entry hierarchy. iphone app converts edited entries to plain text. Evernote : No interior linking. No hierarchy. I think I've tried every serious contender and none of them have all four (seemingly simple) requirements. I'm hoping that I'm either missing an existing feature in an app I've tried or that someone knows of something I haven't found it yet.

• Fastest way to remove non-numeric characters from a VARCHAR in SQL Server

  I'm writing an import utility that is using phone numbers as a unique key within the import. I need to check that the phone number does not already exist in my DB. The problem is that phone numbers in the DB could have things like dashes and parenthesis and possibly other things. I wrote a function to remove these things, the problem is that it is slow and with thousands of records in my DB and thousands of records to import at once, this process can be unacceptably slow. I've already made the phone number column an index. I tried using the script from this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/52315/t-sql-trim-nbsp-and-other-non-alphanumeric-characters But that didn't speed it up any. Is there a faster way to remove non-numeric characters? Something that can perform well when 10,000 to 100,000 records have to be compared. Whatever is done needs to perform fast. Update Given what people responded with, I think I'm going to have to clean the fields before I run the import utility. To answer the question of what I'm writing the import utility in, it is a C# app. I'm comparing BIGINT to BIGINT now, with no need to alter DB data and I'm still taking a performance hit with a very small set of data (about 2000 records). Could comparing BIGINT to BIGINT be slowing things down? I've optimized the code side of my app as much as I can (removed regexes, removed unneccessary DB calls). Although I can't isolate SQL as the source of the problem anymore, I still feel like it is.

• Get contact name from just the number

  Say i have an edit text and a button. In the edit text you would type a number and then when you hit the button it will either show the contact information or return with the name of that contact. I have tried all sorts of methods provided with no luck. The one i have successfully gotten the furthest with was the following... But i had no luck returning the name. • Excel Regex, or export to Python? ; "Vlookup" in Python?

  heya, We have an Excel file with a worksheet containing people records. 1. Phone Number Sanitation One of the fields is a phone number field, which contains phone numbers in the format e.g.: +XX(Y)ZZZZ-ZZZZ (where X, Y and Z are integers). There are also some records which have less digits, e.g.: +XX(Y)ZZZ-ZZZZ And others with really screwed up formats: +XX(Y)ZZZZ-ZZZZ / ZZZZ or: ZZZZZZZZ We need to sanitise these all into the format: 0YZZZZZZZZ (or OYZZZZZZ with those with less digits). 2. Fill in Supervisor Details Each person also has a supervisor, given as an numeric ID. We need to do a lookup to get the name and email address of that supervisor, and add it to the line. This lookup will be firstly on the same worksheet (i.e. searching itself), and it can then fallback to another workbook with more people. 3. Approach? For the first issue, I was thinking of using regex in Excel/VBA somehow, to do the parsing. My Excel-fu isn't the best, but I suppose I can learn...lol. Any particular points on this one? However, would I be better off exporting the XLS to a CSV (e.g. using xlrd), then using Python to fix up the phone numbers? For the second approach, I was thinking of just using vlookups in Excel, to pull in the data, and somehow, having it fall through, first on searching itself, then on the external workbook, then just putting in error text. Not sure how to do that last part. However, if I do happen to choose to export to CSV and do it in Python, what's an efficient way of doing the vlookup? (Should I convert to a dict, or just iterate? • Java - Save video stream from Socket to File

  I use my Android application for streaming video from phone camera to my PC Server and need to save them into file on HDD. So, file created and stream successfully saved, but the resulting file can not play with any video player (GOM, KMP, Windows Media Player, VLC etc.) - no picture, no sound, only playback errors. I tested my Android application into phone and may say that in this instance captured video successfully stored on phone SD card and after transfer it to PC played witout errors, so, my code is correct. In the end, I realized that the problem in the video container: data streamed from phone in MP4 format and stored in *.mp4 files on PC, and in this case, file may be incorrect for playback with video players. Can anyone suggest how to correctly save streaming video to a file? • Android SQLite database locale, locking, and version

  In some books and online I see these method calls being made after a database is created: db.setLocale(Locale.getDefault()); db.setLockingEnabled(true); db.setVersion(DB_VERSION); Why is this done? As far as I can tell, after creating a new database, the system adds a table named android_metadata with one field named locale and that table has one row with the locale field set to "en_US". Now I assume the column has that value because I am using a U.S. phone, and if I were using a phone from a different region then the locale field would be set appropriately. Can anyone confirm this? I'm guessing that the setLocale method would only be useful in the case that you install a pre-built database onto a phone and then want to change the locale to match the phone's locale. Sound right? The documentation for setLockingEnabled says it defaults to true so there's no need to make that call, right? Lastly, what's with the call to setVersion? I can't find a table that contains this information so I've been assuming that the database file itself stores the version number somewhere. So when I create a database, which requires you to have already specified the version number in the call to the SQLiteOpenHelper constructor, there's no point in calling setVersion. Again, perhaps this method exists for the case of installing a pre-built database to a device and you then wish to change the database's version (though I can't think of when doing this would make sense). I'm very new to PHP with nearly 0 knowledge and have no idea how to add something like that. I did have a go at making a new variable with the string inside and then include that in the: mail($recipient, $subject, $formcontent, $mailheader) or die("Error!"); line but with no success. • How do you fix issues with the debugger for the Android plug-in for Eclipse not attaching?

  I have been trying to program something for the Android mobile phone, using Eclipse and the Android plug-in for that IDE, and my debugger used to attach just fine. But then it has suddenly started having consistent issues attaching. I just get that message about how the process is waiting for the debugger attach, and then it just won't. What determines whether the attachment glitches so seems to have something to do with what the code is that I'm trying to debug, as it seems to be drastically more of an issue with some versions of my code than with others (on the same app). How do I fix this? Now before you answer, please understand that I have researched this issue already. I have found a couple of solutions that have worked with other people, but which do not work for me. One of which is setting the debuggable property in the main manifest file as true, and the other is going into Dev Tools and into some settings menu, and from there selecting the process and essentially saying to the fake phone, "Debug this process". Neither has really worked. Any other ideas? And just in case...I've run into one blasted technical issue like this after another trying to program for that stupid phone. And I'm not the only one who's having these issues; when I go online to research these issues, it is always very easy for me to find many people who have the same issues, and who are having to use the shottiest, sloppiest, most "ghetto" solutions to work around these issues. I know that many people have created good applications for that phone, but I don't see how I'm supposed to do that when the SDK and the plug-in just don't work half the time. Does anybody know how I may put all this trash behind me, once and for all? Thanks for your answers to either question!

• Really strange problem with jailbroken iPhone 4. Lags but fixes by running Cydia a second

  I have jailbreaked my iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 with both limera1n and greenpois0n and the outcome is the same. My phone is really slow opening apps. (including Phone.app an SMS.app) they take about 10-15seconds to load. BUT if I start Cydia for only one second everything goes back to normal. (Please note that I have to have 3G or WI-FI access to do this) Until I let my phone sit for about 15 minutes then it's the same again. Please note that if I don't exit the apps they seem to continue working but with a bit of lag. Cydia also seems to be the only app not affected by the delay. "Loding Data" appears as quick as normal. These issues did not start to appear until about 2 weeks after I jailbreaked my phone. I have tried running "speed test" while it's in its slow state. I start the app and the app loads for like 15 seconds and then the result shows everyhting is good. All green. Since Cydia seems for fix it temporarily i figured it's jailbreak-related and not hardware-related.

  HI, all! I'm trying to implement my own phone call handling UI. What I want to do is, if a call comes in, the incoming telephone number and a picture are displayed, and, if I press a button, the incoming call will be accepted/answered. At first, an exception is thrown if I press my answer button: ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to handle Intent { act=android.intent.action.ANSWER Then I added an entry in the AndroidManifest.xml: I run the app again, there is no exception anymore. However, I doubt the incoming call is not really accepted. Because if the press the Android's screen answer button (green button), the incoming call is accepted and a green button is also displayed on the upper left corner of the emulator screen, while my app doesn't. I also read the Phone app's source code in android source. There is method such as acceptCall() in the Phone class. But these codes seem difficult for me to use, because there are many imports declaration in the code, such as : import com.android.internal.telephony.Call; import com.android.internal.telephony.CallStateException; import com.android.internal.telephony.CallerInfo; import com.android.internal.telephony.CallerInfoAsyncQuery; import com.android.internal.telephony.Connection; import com.android.internal.telephony.MmiCode; import com.android.internal.telephony.Phone; And, if I add these imports in my code, there will be too many errors, such as : "The import com.android.internal.telephony cannot be resolved" What is the right and simple way for my problem? • Android: How to periodically send location to a server

  Hi, I am running a Web service that allows users to record their trips (kind of like Google's MyTracks) as part of a larger app. The thing is that it is easy to pass data, including coords and other items, to the server when a user starts a trip or ends it. Being a newbie, I am not sure how to set up a background service that sends the location updates once every (pre-determined) period (min 3 minutes, max 1 hr) until the user flags the end of the trip, or until a preset amount of time elapses. Once the trip is started from the phone, the server responds with a polling period for the phone to use as the interval between updates. This part works, in that I can display the response on the phone, and my server registers the user's action. Similarly, the trip is closed server-side upon the close trip request. However, when I tried starting a periodic tracking method from inside the StartTrack Activity, using requestLocationUpdates(String provider, long minTime, float minDistance, LocationListener listener) where minTime is the poll period from the server, it just did not work, and I'm not getting any errors. So it means I'm clueless at this point, never having used Android before. I have seen many posts here on using background services with handlers, pending intents, and other things to do similar stuff, but I really don't understand how to do it. • Force language change from custom account creation script through url

  I have made a custom 'Account Creation' script so that users can login from my phone application. What I want is to be able to change the responses from the server depending on their locale. • Disable home button in android toddler app?

  I've developed and app that is a slide show of pictures which each play a sound when you tap them. It's like a picture book for ages 2-4. The problem is, since android won't let you capture a home button press and essentially disable it, when parents give the phone to their child to play with unattended (brave parent), the child can inadvertenly exit the app and then make calls or otherwise tweak the phone. There are two other apps that currently have a psuedo fix for this issue. The apps are Toddler Lock and ToddlePhone. I've tried contacting the developers of these apps for some guidance but they haven't been willing to disclose anything, which if fine, but does anyone here have any suggestions? It looks like both of those other apps are acting like a home screen replacement app. When you enable the "childproof mode" on those apps the user is prompted to chose and app for the action and the choices are "Launcher, LauncherPro, etc." plus the toddler app. You then have to make the toddler app the default and voila, the phone is "locked" and can only be "unlocked" using a key combination or touching the four corners of the screen, etc. when you "unlock" the phone. your normal home screen app default restored. You don't even have to make the toddler app the default the next time you enable the "childproof mode". I have read that these two apps have problems with Samsung phones and they can cause an an infinite crash-and-restart-loop that requires a factory reset to fix. Obviously this is not the ideal solution to the problem but it looks like the only one availiable at this point. Does anyone have any ideas on how to implement a "childproof mode"?

• Battery life if using GPS and background program

  I was wondering if anyone has created an app that starts in the background and utilizes the GPS to gather the current Lat and Long every minute or so? If you have, would you please provide your battery times? As in, how long does your phone last until its all out of juice from just running that background app with standard cell phone programs. I'm trying to see if it would be worth the time to create an app for myself but if i work for 8 hours and dont have a way of charging my phone during that time then i dont want to be going home and it shut down on me since my app i would create works at my house. I need the app to work since it will see when i am in range of my home (from the GPS) and then send commands to my server at the house from my phone. So thats why it would need to be able to stay in the background doing a check every 1 minute or so. Or only turn on the GPS (Is is doable with iOS? & Android?) whenever its after 5pm each day so that it will minimize the load on the battery?!? Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks!
