• Virtualhost setup, same IP address, different DirectoryIndex's

  I am trying to set up 2 virtual host entries in apache but I'm not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I have two domain names, both pointing to the same IP Address. I need the DirectoryIndex to be different, which is pretty much the only difference in the entries. I have the following set up: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName firstdomain.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "/srv/www" DirectoryIndex /portals/site/index.html </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName seconddomain.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "/srv/www" DirectoryIndex /portals/site/index_fr.html </VirtualHost> Not sure what I need to do differently but the second entry doesn't work. The only real difference is I need the second domain to point to a different DirectoryIndex. If there is a better way to accomplish this, your help would be appreciated.

• Have an iPad's viewable area visible on your computer monitor for remote web-meeting training?

  I want to demo the usage of my iPad on my computer screen so that I can transmit it to other people during a training session using a web conference tool (like dimdim.com, gotomeeting.com, fuzemeeting.com, etc...) Is there a way to stream an iPad's display to a computer so it would be visible in such a screen casting software? My current ad-hoc solution for this would be to use a webcam to livecast me using a physical (real life) iPad and broadcast that to other users for training. This is undesirable due to the difficulty in really seeing the iPad well. So I'm hoping someone has a way to do: 1) Video output the iPad's display to my computer screen. 2) Emulate an iPad with a installed app (not having the source code) on the screen.

• Video Hosting External or Internal?

  I have a client who wants to offer videos for downloading or streaming on his website. Now we have hosting for him, which is wonderful: it's reliable and fast, offers unlimited space and databases BUT it only offers 10GB in bandwidth. The videos could easily be placed on his server (unlimited space) but the bandwidth is a real problem. Now I am wondering if he would purchase external hosting for his videos, and people would want to download them, woould this still eat up all his available bandwidth in no time, because the download request would go via his site, or is there a way to circumvent this?

• Nodejs for processing js and Nginx for handling everything else

  I am having a nodejs running on port 8000 and nginx on port 80 on same server. I want Nginx to handle all the requests(image,css,etc) and forward js requests to nodejs server on port 8000. • Software to draw custom street maps?

  I'm looking for any (Windows) software that allows me to draw custom street maps. I'm not looking for something that displays existing maps from real places, but something that allows me to define my own map. Obviously this can be achieved through any graphics program however I am wondering if there's a software which makes it almost drag-drop easy to create your own maps of visual quality to that of Open Street Maps, Google Maps, street directories etc. Preferably an offline desktop app with attention on design rather than complex geospacial specifics. Context: I want to make a detailed street map for a game I'm making.

• Restore "lost" user after Active Directory removal?

  Is it possible to restore lost users after Active Directory unistallation ? (I forgot to switch users to local users) The computer run Windows Server 2008 R2 Entreprise, and all the registry linked to the user i want to restore seems to still be there, user's folder is still on the harddrive, and useraccount2 still show the user (But flagged as unknown user) Some folders still have rigts set to this lost user, and even the local default Admin account cannot open/delete the folder. (But the real problem here is to find how to recover users account, the folder can be deleted an other way) All users i want te restore was originaly local users, converted to domain users after Active Directory installation. I think that if i can change user's sid (choosing the sid manually) i'll be able to easily recover rights on folders Regards

• Start tomcat webapp with root privileges

  I built a webapp that uses libpcap (via jpcap). In order to be able to get the network interfaces list or to bind to a network interface, the application (in this case a webaap that runs from tomcat server) must be running with root privileges. During development I simply ran Eclipse with root privileges (sudo eclipse) and my webapp worked just fine with Eclipse's local tomcat server. However, when I try to deploy my webapp to the "real" tomcat server, it isn't working. I Also tried to start the tomcat6 service with sudo and changed the TOMCAT6_USER definition (defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6) from "tomcat6" to "root" but it made no difference. What should I do to make it work?

• A website hosted on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet, somewhere on the Internet?

  Background I'm attempting to demonstrate, using a real-world example, of why someone would not want to configure their internal network on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet. Obviously it's because this is not designated as private address space. As of 2010, ARIN has apparently allocated 1.0.0.0/8 to APNIC (the Asia-Pacific NIC), who seems to have begun assigning addresses in that subnet, though not in 1.1.0.0/16, 1.0.0.0/16, and others (because these addresses are so polluted by bad network configurations all around the Internet). My Question My question is this: I'd like to find a website that responds on this subnet somewhere and use it as a counter-example, demonstrating to a non-technical user its inaccessibility from an internal network configured on 1.0.0.0/8. Other than writing a program to sniff all ~16 million hosts, looking for a response on port 80, does anyone know of a directory I can use, or even better yet, does anyone know of a site that's configured on this subnet? WHOIS seems to be too general of a search for me at this point...

• Is there a way to enable metro on a 1024x600 netbook?

  Windows 8 Consumer Preview works great on my 1024x600 netbook but, for some strange reason, Microsoft decided to provide its Metro interface only to 1024x768 and up screens. "Strange" because Android can work with as little as 240x320 screens, and I know that Microsoft is presumably targeting smartphones, too, in its upcoming Windows 8. The interface itself is there with all the panels etc. but when one of the rectangles is pressed, Windows 8 just refuses to launch any application (even Internet Explorer), except for Windows Explorer. Looks to me like this isn't a real hardware limitation but some arbitrary flag set in the registry. Is there any way or tweak to enable the Metro interface on 1024x600 screen?

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

• How can I include guidance text in Word?

  We use several Word documents as templates and currently include 'guidance' text for the reader - in the form of grey, italic text - to provide guidance to the person completing the document. Note how the grey+italic text is used to provide both guidance and example content Problems with this approach include: People forgetting to delete all of this template/boilerplate text People using the italic+grey formatting when inputting real information because they don't change the style We've considered including Reviewing comments as an alternative but this can be a pain and suffers from the first problem above. I'm not sure a simple, elegant solution exists here but if there's something obvious I'm missing I'd love to hear about it.

• mount dev, proc, sys in a chroot environment?

  I'm trying to create a Linux image with custom picked packages. I followed the guide here http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4766.0 However, when I tried to install some packages, it failed to configure due to missing the proc, sys, dev directories. So, I learned from other places that I need to "mount" the host proc, ... directories to my chroot environment. Though, I saw two syntax and am not sure which one to use. In host machine: mount --bind /proc <chroot dir>/proc and another syntax (in chroot envrionment): mount -t proc none /proc Which one should I use, and what are the difference? Edit: What I'm trying to do is to hand craft the packages I'm going to use on an XO laptop, because compiling packages takes really long time on the real XO hardware, if I can build all the packages I need and just flash the image to the XO, I can save time and space.

• redundant/multi-site terminal server

  Hi We have a Hyper-V cluster running 5 virtual terminal servers using HA. We need to be able make this system redundant and so if this site was to fail our users could log into the backup system at another location and access their data via the terminal servers. Any ideas? We were thinking of maybe using a NAS which replicated the data to the other location in real-time(pass-through disks)? and having a similar Hyper-V cluster setup in the backup location. However we would need to create the users in both location and create a virtual mirror without the data ie applications, directories, settings etc. Is this the best way to achieve this? We have read that using Hyper-v pass through disks is a big performance de-grade.

• On RouterOS, how will transparent proxying (with DNAT) affect reporting of netflows?

  I have a box running Mikrotik RouterOS, which is set up to do transparent web proxying, as described here. In short, this means that I have a firewall rule for destination NAT causing any port 80 traffic to get redirected to port 8080 on the router, which is received by the Mikrotik local web proxy. The local web proxy then makes the web request on the client's behalf, in this case to a parent web proxy server (which in turn does the real web request). My question is, how will this two-part process get reported in the logging of traffic flow information (netflows)? Looking at the logged information, what I seem to be seeing is this: One flow recorded from client machine (private IP) to remote proxy (8080) Another flow recorded from router to remote proxy (8080) The original request that the client made to port 80 isn't recorded. I want to write code to analyse traffic usage, so I want to be sure I'm not losing information if I discard the latter of these.

• Did MS break IE with update on 2010-01-12?

  I have 4 computers at 2 completely seperate clients that have all experienced the same problem on the same day. Internet Explorer 7 is returning "Page not Found" for all sites. The real kicker is that all other Internet works, including Firefox. At least one of the machines is Vista. Not sure on the other 3. At least 2 of the machines have no proxy server set so it isn't that. Did Microsoft push an automatic update that broke IE7 on Tuesday 2010-01-12? Has anyone else experienced this problem in the last week? This can't be a coincidence. Apart from being located in the same town and being supported by my company (we didn't change anything) these clients have nothing in common except they use Windows and they browse with IE. These machines probably share other traits, like having Spybot installed, however removing Spybot changed nothing. Also, of course i got them to reboot. Still broken.

  About three days ago, I noticed the exim mailqueue started filling up on one of my servers, and upon inspecting some of the emails using # exim -Mvb $ID, I noticed they were being sent to some system email address (which is not a real address), and the body of the messages were as follows: (process:8259): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text() I'm wondering what could be causing this strange issue, as I've never heard of 'pango' at all... I've never seen that function used in my lifetime! It seems the process id (PID) is for an apache process, though, as the pids are always gone by the time I use # ps -aux to look them up.   Hi, I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

(something related to broadcasting maybe). 2) Can keepalived nodes run on different networks, "internet" networks? 3) Is keepalived depend on the router? (as far as I understand, the virtual IP should point to the real router/switch that connects both nodes). 4) Is keepalived "service-independent"? - What is keepalived's involvement domain? IPs only? Or is it service/protocol oriented? - Does it deal ONLY with IP, or is it designed for HTTP for example? - In other words, can I use it for custom (network-based) app? 5) Have more than one failover server? If the answer for question #4 is "yes", i.e it depends on the service type, then is there any general alternative? Preferably easy to install/configure :)

• How can I make full-screen desktop applications only cover the snapped desktop?

  In Windows 8, you can "snap" two apps next to each other, and one of those apps can be the legacy Windows desktop environment. A convenient application for this (or so I thought) would be to snap a chat client, small browser, or other app while watching content in full-screen on the desktop. The problem with this is that full screen desktop applications will take over the entire screen, even if the desktop is snapped to only occupy 3/4th of the display. What I would like is some way to force "full screen" desktop apps to only cover the snapped desktop area, and to truly go full screen if the desktop is snapped to full-width. Is there some way to configure this? But there is no any memory problems reported in munin monitoring: As you see system uses around 0.2G and 1G is available. So my question is: Is it xen specific problem, that real memory usage and memory usage that shows munin are different (I've never seen such problems oh real hardware machines)? Or maybe it is just monitoring problem, that can't catch moment when there is unusual high load and domU go down? And how I can to defeat this problem? it is really annoying to catch messages in e-mail that domU went down. Btw, such situation was when domU had 2G memory.

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation.   Dell support can be fun to deal with right? Ultimately, I have been going back and forth with Dell on an issue and came to reinstalling Windows 7 32-Bit Pro. The problem is that Windows Setup will not let me format. I've read other posts that say Windows 7 must installed on first partition here. But now that confuses me because the computer came shipped with the installation on the third partion as shown in the picture below? Is there a real problem? Or is this a Microsoftism? Should I obliterate the "OEM" partition to make this work? Please note that the format, delete, new, and extend options are grayed out.

• Ubuntu 12.04 VPS doesn't boot with mysql in nsswitch.conf

  1and1 VPS ("dynamic cloud server") does not boot any more as soon as mysql lookup is enabled in nsswitch.conf - any suggestions appreciated. Minimal setup to reproduce the problem: install Ubuntu 12.04 / LTS minimal server image install mysql-server, libnss-mysql-bg, nscd configure /etc/libnss-mysql.cfg and /etc/libnss-mysql-root.cfg set up appropriate database tables configure nss lookups through mysql in nsswitch.conf passwd: compat mysql group: compat mysql shadow: compat mysql Now, when I try to reboot the server it just hangs. No logs (maybe due to /var not yet being mounted), and I can't see console output (since this is a VPS). Booting into recovery image and removing "mysql" from /etc/nsswitch.conf makes the system bootable again, so this is definitely related to nsswitch/libnss-mysql-bg. There's a thread on gentoo-users which seems to describe a similar problem, unfortunately there's no real solution described, also the thread is rather old (from 2006) so I'm not sure whether this applies to me at all.
