• iPhone UIImage number recognition

  Hi All, I have a small UIImage (jpg) with a single typed number. I want to be able to read the number with some kind of pattern recognition. I'm really not sure where to start, so any help would be appreciated. my initial idea was to compare this image with other images. For instance compare the image with that of a 1,2,3, etc until a match was found. That just seems slow and cumbersome and wondered if there was a better way to do it? Thanks

• understanding memory mapping in directx

  So my question is ... " When your using the mapping feature to write into a memory buffer, are you really just saving the whole procedure into a queue so directX executes it when finished with other tasks???" I ask this question because this is my perception of mapping when writing to a buffer. I just want to make sure my perception is correct. I understand that the monitor moves extremely slow in compared to the processor, and I am sure the processor can execute 10 times the amount the screen can refresh. So is this one of the reason you should map when writing to a buffer. so each procedure can be done in a orderly fashion. If someone could elaborate, that would be great. thanks

• Can we view objets in the JVM memory?

  Hey, At work we found that on some instances (particulary the slow ones) we have a different behaviour, acquired at the reboot. We guess a cache is not initialized correctly, or maybe a concurrency problem... Anyway it's not reproductible in any other env than production. We actually don't have loggers to activate... it's an old component... Thus i'd like to know if there are tools that can help us to see the different objets present in the JVM memory in order to check the content of the cache... Thank you!

• Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? • web page db query optimisation

  I am putting together a web page which is quite 'expensive' in terms of Db hits. I dont want to start optimizing at this stage - though with me trying to hit a deadline, I may end up not optimising at all. Currently the page requires 18 (thats right eighteen) hits to the db. I am already using joins, and some of the queries are UNIONed to minimize the trips to the db. My local dev machine can handle this (page is not slow) however, I feel if I release this into the wild, the number of queries will quickly overwhelm my database (mySQL). I could always use memcache or something similar, but I would much rather continue with my other dev work that needs to be completed before the deadline - at least retrieving the page work, its simply a matter of optimization. My question therefore is - is 18 db queries for a single page retrieval completely outrageous - (i.e. I should put everything on hold and optimize the hell of the retrieval logic), or shall I continue as normal, meet the deadline and release on schedule and see what happens?

• Will MySql caching cause performance problems?

  I am about to upload my website onto a VPS. It is a classifieds website, where all data is stored in MySql and Solr. I wonder if when using MySql:s cache, the server will slow down? Ie, if somebody makes a search for the first time, and MySql is to cache the query, will the caching make the server slower than if it would not cache anything? After the caching is done I know things will improve in terms of performance... But I would like to know if I should even use the cache or not, what do you think? Thanks

  I am trying to import data from a database that uses primary key / forign key relations to a core data database in Xcode. I have code that creates hundreds of child entities in a managed object context: Each child has an ID that corresponds to a parent. child1 parentID = 3 child2 parentID = 17 child3 parentID = 17 ... childn parentID = 5 I now need to relate each child to its parent. The parents are all stored in persistent memory. My first thought was to preform a fetch for each child to get its parent. However, I think this would be slow. Am I correct? How should I do this instead?

I know the question I asked is posted many time in this forum. And I have tired all of the solutions available, but no luck I may case I am trying to read a dat file which is basically a msg/feed file having more than 22000 Characters. Every line may or may not be of same length. My requirement is to convert the file to fixed line length character file. I have a logic that work well using vb script, however its pretty slow. I have checked with For f/ but no luck. The only delimiter I have is EOT, which i can see in Textpad but not in notepad. I have tried with \n, token=. Please help me in resolving the issue.   I am creating a computer vision application that detect objects via a web camera. I am currently focusing on the performance of the application My problem is in a part of the application that generates the XML cascade file using Haartraining file. This is very slow and takes about 6days . To get around this problem I decided to use multiprocessing, to minimize the total time to generate Haartraining XML file. I found two solutions: opencl and (openMp and openMPI ) . Now I'm confused about which one to use. I read that opencl is to use multiple cpu and GPU but on the same machine. Is that so? On the other hand OpenMP is for multi-processing and using openmpi we can use multiple CPUs over the network. But OpenMP has no GPU support. Can you please suggest the pros and cons of using either of the libraries.

  Hello, I have a news site containing an archive with more than 1 million news. I created a word definitions database with about 3000 entries, consisting of word-definition pairs. What I want to do is adding a definition next to every occurence of these words in the news. I cant make a static change as I can add a new keyword everyday, so i can make it realtime or cached. The question is, a str_replace or a preg_replace would be very slow for searching 3 thousand keywords in a text and replacing them. Are there any fast alternatives?

I'm currently unencoding an RLE stream to an 8 bit-per-pixel buffer, then re-encoding to a 1 bit line, however, I would like to try and keep it all in the 1 bit space in an effort to increase its speed. • SQL Server 2008 + expensive union all

  Hi al, we have 5 tables over which we should query with user search input throughout a stored procedure. We do a union all of the similar data inside a view. Because of this the view can not be materialized. We are not able to change these 5 tables drastically (like creating a 6th table that contains the similar data of the 5 tables and reference that new one from the 5 tables). The query is rather expensive / slow what are our other options? It's allowed to think outside the box. • Performance problem loading lots of user controls

  My application is loading a bunch of the same user control into a ScrollPanel. The problem is, this is very slow. The profiler show that the method Application.LoadComponent(), which is called internally by in the designer code in the constructor of my user control, is the bottleneck. The documentation of this method says, that this method load XAML files. I alway though the compiler compiles XAML to BAML and embedds it into the assembly. So the question is, how can I use BAML instead of XAML? Is there another way to make loading my user controls faster?

  There is a strange behavior of delete-directory function with enabled flag delete-by-removing-to-trash. It deletes files one by one instead of applying move-file-to-trash to the directory. As a result emacs deletes big directories slowly and there are many files in the trash after deleting, so it is impossible to restore the directory. Example: Directory structure: ddd/ ccc/ 1.txt There are three files in the trash after deleting ddd: trash/ ddd/ ccc/ 1.txt instead of one: trash/ ddd/ It is very slow, because emacs traverse directory recursively. I can't restore deleted directory. What i need is exactly the same behavior as of move-file-to-trash. But it should be transparent (i.e. 'D x' in dired mode). How to solve the problem? As a temporary solution i see the making advice function for `delete-directory'.

  I have a reoccurring issue where a customer calls up and complains that the web site is too slow. Specifically, if they are inactive for a short period of time, then go back to the site, there will be a minute-two minute delay before the user sees a response. (the standard browser is Firefox in this case) I have Perfmon up and running, the cpu utilization is usually below 20% (single proc...don't ask). The database is humming along. And I'm pulling my hair out. So, what metrics/tools do you find useful when evaluating IIS performance?

  Hi, let's say you have an game server which creating text log files of gamers actions, and from time to time you need to lookup something in those logs files (like investigating an scam or loosing an item). Just for example you have 100 files and each file have size between 20MB and 50MB - How you would search them quickly? What I have already tried to do is create several threads and each invidual thread will map his own file to memory (let say memory should not be problem if it not exceed 500MB of ram) perform search here, result was something around 1 second per file : File:a26.log - read in: 0.891, lines: 625282, matches: 78848 Is there better way how to do that ? - because it seems to me kinda slow. thanks. (java was used for this case)

• Relational databases are not suited for my application - what's the alternative?

  Hi, I'm writing a CMS in PHP that allows the user to define different fields (e.g. a Blog page could have fields for Title (string), Content (rich text), Picture (file)). I need the user to be able to add and remove fields dynamically, and the only way I can think of to do it with relational DBs is to serialise all these values and store them in one cell. This seems like a slow approach and like I'm trying to fit something dynamic within a static structure. Could someone recommend anything that is PHP-compatible that would make this easier?

• how to animate a menu item into a large div (window) using jquery's animate?

  i'm pretty sure this can be done pretty easily with jquery's animate api, but i'm not good enough to figure it out. what i want to do is this: i have a menu item at the top of the viewport that the user will click on. when the user clicks on it, you'll see something that looks like the div "popping" out of the menu and float to a particular location on the screen. when i say popping i don't mean anything fancy - i just mean it appears to be originating from the menu item and settling somewhere on the screen that i specify. but the important part is that this animation happens really fast. fast enough where you don't have to actually wait for the window to appear, but slow enough so the eye sees the animation start from the menu item and end up at a new location where the window will actually appear, and appear with a specify height and width. hope that all made sense?

• Sorting 1000-2000 elements with many cache misses

  I have an array of 1000-2000 elements which are pointers to objects. I want to keep my array sorted and obviously I want to do this as quick as possible. They are sorted by a member and not allocated contiguously so assume a cache miss whenever I access the sort-by member. Currently I'm sorting on-demand rather than on-add, but because of the cache misses and [presumably] non-inlining of the member access the inner loop of my quick sort is slow. I'm doing tests and trying things now, (and see what the actual bottleneck is) but can anyone recommend a good alternative to speeding this up? Should I do an insert-sort instead of quicksorting on-demand, or should I try and change my model to make the elements contigious and reduce cache misses? OR, is there a sort algorithm I've not come accross which is good for data that is going to cache miss?

• Will this make the object thread-safe?

  I have a native Visual C++ COM object and I need to make it completely thread-safe to be able to legally mark it as "free-threaded" in th system registry. Specifically I need to make sure that no more than one thread ever accesses any member variable of the object simultaneously. The catch is I'm almost sure that no sane consumer of my COM object will ever try to simultaneously use the object from more than one thread. So I want the solution as simple as possible as long as it meets the requirement above. Here's what I came up with. I add a mutex or critical section as a member variable of the object. Every COM-exposed method will acquire the mutex/section at the beginning and release before returning control. I understand that this solution doesn't provide fine-grained access and this might slow execution down, but since I suppose simultaneous access will not really occur I don't care of this. Will this solution suffice? Is there a simpler solution?

• Alternatives to PropertyInfo.GetValue() for Mono?

  I have a method that has the following signature: private object GetNestedObject<y>(y objToAccess, string nestedObjectName) I'm using Reflection to get the nestedObject from the objToAccess and return it. This works well except it's really slow (I have to do this a few hundred thousand times). I came across HyperDescriptor, but since I'm running this on Linux, and Mono doesn't support TypeDescriptionProviders, I can't use it. Are there any alternatives to using getValue in this case? I could always hardcode in overrides for each type, but that is not desirable and would add a lot of maintenance overhead in my case.
