• Audio problems with asus notebook with Bluetooth and usb devices in win 7

  My notebook is Asus P53E - core i5 Windows 7 installed Audio from PC speakers and headphone is distorted when i turn on bluetooth or some usb device plugged in. I belive this is a software issue. I tried updating my audio drivers but nothing help. Any help will be appreciated. Update: After a few days digging I found that this problem is causing by the asus sound enhancement application SonicFocus. The distortion stops while turning off sonic focus. Can anyone help me with a solution other than turning off SonicFocus

• Upload large database SQL file

  I've a database of more than 20Gb of size on my hard disk. What is the best way to upload it with the least (money) load possible on the server? - I'm on Windows 7. - I have FTP and SSH access on the server. I avoid using FTP because my connection cuts off a lot, I can't imagine I re-upload again the file after failing on 99%. I found some tools that split the large .sql file to small .sql files, but they didn't mention how to gather these files again into one file. Another way is to archive the big .sql file to .rar with -v option, upload them through FTP then unpack them. But unpacking will also cost, right? I know it will cost in any cases, but any best practice will be strongly appreciated.

After all my encodes are done, I would like to have the PC speaker beep, as I usually turn my large external speakers off. On Linux I would install the "beep" package, but so far I haven't found such a program for Windows 7. • How small can/should I make my partitions?

  My machine is currently split into 3 user partitions (plus however many Windows and Linux have decided to slyly create) Which are C: Windows 7, D: Data, and E(?): Ubuntu. I'm considering wiping my Windows 7 Install (stupid Skyrim not installing) and restructuring the way my machine operates. I want the partitions for the Windows and Linux install to be as small as possible while still able to function well, and be able to install games on my Windows C: drive. I then want to link from both Win7 and Linux drives to the middle D drive so that the in built My Documents (and etc on windows) folder and my Home folder (linux) share a common location, rather than my current situation which is 3 separate file locations. Something like this: I have 1 TB to play with and I want to know the 'best' sizes to make these partitions when I reinstall Windows (which I need to do anyway) and re-jig everything.

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • Virtualbox crashes quite often in Windows 8

  I just installed Windows 8 on my computer. I got the ISO and the product key from my university so the software itself is sound. I use alot of virtual box. And ever since I moved to Windows 8, I have noticed that virtual box crashes more often. In particular, it is very very bad at opening multiple guests. My CPU usage will be at like 20% and I only have 3 guests open and my entire computer just freezes. Cursor and all. In Windows 7, I was able to open like 6 (not that I ever needed to) and really push my CPU. I havent experience any other issues with Windows 8 yet. Has anyone encountered this? Thanks!

• Distributing a Python Software for Linux [closed]

  Hi, I am writing my first software in Python for Ubuntu (or Debian based Linux). I am looking for a good advise on the best way to distribute my software. The easist alternative that I can think of at the moment is to archive the python code into *.tar.gz, and let user execute the main python script as an executable to run the software. I realize that this may not be the best approach. I looked at the Debian maintainer guide: "http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-dother.en.html", not too sound lazy, but the guide looks very intimidating for a beginner. Are there any other tutorial that show how to create a debian package for a beginner ? If anyone has a suggestion do let me know. Thanks ^_^

• Toshiba laptop only shows black screen with mouse pointer after starting up

  I only see black screen after the startup. It just shows the logo and the status bar upon start, then it goes black screen with moveable cursor. I tried alt+ctrl+del, but it doesn't work. I pressed shift 5 times and it makes a sound. I already removed battery and restarted it, but still the same. I can go to safe mode and scanned thru there. Still, desktop won't show up. Don't know what else to check?

• Tests for hard drive health

  I have a 5-year old hard drive (bought new at the time), but it was sitting in my closet for 5 years, unused. I have just started using it, and seems to be getting a whirring sound (rather distinct from the other noises like fans etc.). I ran a few diagnostics tests, like Seagate's SeaTools, and the SMART test, and a few generic tests and all passed. Should I be concerned? Is there any other test that I should run? It's an internal IDE WD 5400RPM drive. Being used for a desktop, which is itself pretty high-end (AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, AMD Radeon GPU etc.), but would be used rather occasionally to begin with (avg. 1-2 hrs. per day). • Mobile Intel 965 vs 4 Series chipset speed differences

  A client of ours is having a problem panning on a mapping application that we write on their panasonic toughbooks (CF-19's). One of their toughbooks the panning is fairly smooth while on the other it is really slow. Doesn't help that they have all the settings turned up, but I would of thought any reasonably new graphics card (even shared memory) would have more than adequate graphic speed. I am pretty sure that the graphic adapter is to blame, but I can't find anything out about either chipset (level of acceleration, non-problems, etc). All I get is the intel data sheets. The faster panning one is on the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset while the slower is on the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. Is this expected? Does it sound like a driver problem? They both have the same amount of ram and same cpu.

  This might sound like an odd question, but please hear me out. I want to setup my laptop to use TrueCrypt, but without a password. My wife doesn't travel much with her notebook. There are occasions where we will have to travel and bring the notebook with us. This is when we would like the have the encryption. The time it takes to to change the unlock pass-phrase is considerably less than it takes to encrypt the drive. My thoughts are to leave the disk encrypted but with no password. Then when it's time to pack for a trip and bring the laptop, we would then change the pass-phrase and create a rescue disk.

• Constantly visible notification and access icon for Empathy in Gnome 3

  Since a short while I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) with gnome-shell (Gnome 3) and I'm trying to get accustomed to the default Empathy Instant Messaging client. One mayor problem for me (coming from Gnome 2 and Psi) is that there is no constantly visible icon which makes it clear (for example by changing its icon or showing an animation) if there are incoming messages which I did not read already and which lets me jump into them with one click. Also I'm missing a way to bring up the contact list or hide it away with a click. I sometimes have real problems even figuring out how to even open the contact list up again. Is there a Gnome 3 extension or some other trick available to display such a notifier in the top bar? I'm talking about something just like the sound and network controls which are already located there. I know that there are notifications in the lower notification area (former system tray), but as it is only visible as I move the mouse in the lower right corner of the screen, its useless for me.

• How do I make my play/pause keyboard button work correctly in iTunes 10 on Windows?

  First and foremost, I have mmKeys installed correctly. My iTunes works almost perfect while minimized to the tray. My problem is with the play/pause button on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. When iTunes does not have focus (like it's minimized, or if it isn't the application I'm active in, like right now while typing this) the play pause button toggles twice. So, I'll push the pause button - and the song that is playing will pause, but a split second later will start up again. If the song is paused, and I push play, the song will immediately pause again. In order to get the key to work correctly, I must give iTunes focus, and then push the button. • What statistics app should I use for my website?

  I have my own server (with root access). I need statistics of users who visit my website etc etc... I have looked at an app called Webalyzer... Is this a good choice? I run apache2 on a Ubuntu 9 system... If you know of any good statistics apps for servers please let me know. And a follow-up question: All statistics are saved in log-files right? So how large would these log-files become then? Possibility to split them would be good, dont know if this is possible with Webalyzer though...

  So ill start from the very beginning. I'm working on a web conference were we are going to show about 12 videos for a total of about half a gig for all 12. Since all the participants are going to be watching (and also streaming/downloading) at once it was recommended we set up a server farm. So i have 4 servers that i am trying to network together. They are all running Microsoft Server 2008 and i have spent the last three days setting them up and now that its done i want to make sure its all ready to go. so i just want to be sure that everything is setup the way that i think it is. • Tabbed terminal that connects to a GNU Screen session?

  I use the session feature of screen extensively. For example, I'll start a screen session for "project1" as "screen -S project1", and then when I need to reconnect I use "screen -d -r project1". This makes it easy to manage multiple projects, each with their own set of shell sessions. What I would love to do now is that when running on Windows and Linux, to be able to use a tabbed terminal program (such as gnome-terminal) to connect to a screen session and have all of the screen windows split out to separate tabs. This way I get all the usual power of screen, but with the convenience of a richer GUI experience. Is there any such terminal program available on Windows and/or Linux?

• Virtual Screen Splitter

  I am looking for a utility that will allow my screen to be split into two sections. I would like to do this so that programs can easily fill or get sized properly to one part of the screen. This way I can pretend that I have a separate monitor for working on my stuff, while my kids can watch something on the other side. In addition, this should help prevent any popups covering up their side of the screen. Although Windows 7 comes with ability to drag a program window to a side and it becomes sized to half of the screen automatically, this is insufficient for me. I would like to make sure that any programs I launch or any pop-ups that open up, do not block the other side of the screen, even for a short time. Also, I am not looking for a virtual OS solution, as in VirtualBox.

  I am setting up two servers; one iis 7 and one sql 2008. I need to use reporting services. What is the best way to set up reporting services so that my iis box can serve the reports. • VPN/Proxy server to bypass work proxy

  Here is my dilema, I am at work and can not set up a VPN connection to my VPN account in the USA. So what I would like to do is somehow have my "IE" at work connect to my home network and route any internet requests through my home PC to my VPN account, so I can access my USA Contents? So what I was thinking and I am not sure if this will work, but set up a proxy server at home on my home computer, that then routes all requests to my VPN Tunnel to the USA. Have my work computer use my home computer as the proxy and viola I have unrestricted internet access? Does that sound feasable? Thanks.

• How to know what dll or services taskhost.exe is hosting?

  I have recently discover a new process in the task manager : taskhost.exe (maybe it was there before but i did not notice it) As the name implies, it seems to be used for running dll in background (like rundll32.exe). Is there a way to know which dll / services this process is hosting ? i would like to know for which purpose it is used and if there is some malware or not. I know it is possible to see which services svchost.exe process is hosting using process explorer utility. I have checked taskhost.exe threads and their stacks using process explorer, here is what i get : So it seems it is used for sound (winmm + playsndsrv). But there is also other things for which very few information is provided (ex : thread 1456, taskhost.exe as start address and nothing relevant can be found in stack (same for 1464, 2272 and so). So maybe it is not the right way to do.

  How can I allow incoming connections on a Windows 7 machine that is connected to VPN? I have some services listening on certain ports that I have forwarded from my router. When the VPN is disconnected, I can connect to these services from my internal network as well as from the Internet without issue. When I connect my VPN however, I am still able to access the ports from my internal network, but not remotely. I think I need a split tunnel setup, and there is an option in the VPN settings to Use Default Gateway on remote network. I want this option enabled so all my traffic is routed through the VPN, but I want incoming connections to be allowed on my internal network IP from the Internet. Is there some hybrid way to set this up with routing?

• Configure browser and VPN traffic

  Hello everyone. I've been having a few issues with my company's VPN server. The VPN is running on a Mac Server (10.6.x) and I'm also using a Macbook (10.6.5). I've been building specific programs to gather information from IPs, and to work on this while I'm at home I need to go through our VPN to access the network. Unless I send all traffic over VPN, I'm not able to hit those specific IPs. However, I'm unable to access the internet through my web browser when I send all my traffic over VPN. I was wondering if there was a way (besides setting up a split tunnel) that I could set up a web browser to go through my current wireless connection, as opposed to going through the VPN like the rest of my applications. Wether the browser be Chrome, Firefox, or Safari doesn't matter to me. Anyone else run into this issue and find a clever way to solve it? Thank you!
