  • whats the default username and password for an ubuntu live cd?

    What's the username and password for an ubuntu live cd image? I ask cause I've recently copied the contents of an ubuntu based live iso (easypeasy, the ldistro for nwtbooks) onto a harddisk, but the squash fs is corrupt. Most likely cause I copied it live. :) so it's not autologging in. Is there a username/password for this? Update: I tried username ubuntu and a blank password, it didn't work

  • Help needed: all Desktop Icons have disappeared!

    My Windows7-german-64bit installation worked fine until today. But this morning I have suddenly lost all my desktop icons. I can re-enable the icons via right-click on desktop > Ansicht > Desktop Symbole anzeigen) (translation: right-click on desktop > View > Show Desktop Icons) But on logoff/logon the icons are lost again! Any help is very appreciated!

  • How to set up an extended desktop on dual monitors in Kubuntu 9.04?

    I'm using my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (which has a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored (i.e. an identical copy) across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors? P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc.. There must be an easier way. edit: Here is a snapshot of the settings.

  • How to remove desktop environments?

    I installed few environments that I wanted to try out on Ubuntu 12.04, but none of them worked at all. It could be that I installed them all at the same time, meaning the OS didn't get a chance to work everything out, but either way, they didn't work. I would now like to remove them. The one's that I installed are Fluxbox, OpenBox, XFCE, and MATE. I installed them through the help of this site. Everything seemed to have been working properly until I actually tried to use the shells and nothing loaded at all. Except for Fluxbox, I think that one worked. I want to know of any way to repair or perhaps just remove the packages entirely. I might have already removed them because I did the apt-get remove command on all of them, but they were still in the list on the login screen.

  • How do I customize desktop wallpaper slideshow?

    I spent some time and tried varioues things but nothing works. Here's what I have tried so far(changing the slideshow manually): Making a new folder /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpapers and add my own background-1.xml in there. Copying a bunch of my own wallpaper files into /usr/share/backgrounds/ Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/Contest/background-1.xml to /usr/share/backgrounds/ I logged out and in and still no changes in Appearance app. I have heard about Wallch but I don't want some app running in the background all the time. I'm not even sure Wallch will work with Gnome 3. I also tryied gnome-3-wp (Gnome 3 Wallpaper Slideshow app) but it just seems broken for Oneiric Ubuntu 11.10. Anyone has a solution?

On launching Thunderbird and Firefox, the application dims and the cursor changes to wait mode. In case of Thunderbird, this is most pronounced with the wait time of up to a minute. Memory status checked with free indicates around 500MB of free memory on such occasions. The OS is stable and I can switch to a different work-space, etc. What could this be? Is this something normal?

In Ubuntu 12.04, opening a file in gedit or I am working on the command line, in dpkg, I get returned the error "locale not supported, falling back to default "C" libraries", and the one below, Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. The locales were not set correctly, and locale LANG and LANGUAGE were the culprits. I picked my way through this. The answer, correct below.

  • Ubuntu dual boot OS crashed my computer. Now my computer won't boot. Please Help

    I've just tried to install ubuntu 12.04 dual boot OS with Windows 7 and it finished installing in ubuntu. However, it said that the bootloader "grub.." failed to install. The same exact problem here I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS. . When I tried to restart my computer, it went to the hp screen since my computer is a dv6 hp laptop and then it goes into this black screen with no words or any buttons will work. There is just a blinking underscore that seems like it'll allow me to type but makes error sounds when I type. Is this because I possibly partitioned my memory incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very desperate. ANY HELP would be great. Thanks.

    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) Kernel : 3.5.0-18-generic I am encountering a strange problem, my whole desktop has shifted to right. This happened after I restored my system, I was getting a blank screen earlier.(something is better than nothing). For some reason it also shows my display as laptop. I do not want to reinstall everything please help. It is cycled around as mentioned by Eliah Kagan For correcting my blank screen issue I edited my grub file I edited this line and added nomodeset, without it screen gets all grained up.     I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.   • Battery not recognized on my laptop (and it recognizes my laptop as a desktop)

    I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried to get the output of cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root Nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find. Is there any way to change the configuration file(s) that detect the internal hardware of the computer. The /proc directory is a temporary RAM directory afaik. Is there a directory where that data is stored permanently and where the RAM reads if you know what I mean? Thanks in advance. AZorin This issue has been reported as bug #764513.

    I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops.   • Weird problems with ruby servers on Ubuntu 9.10

    So I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, trying to setup and deploy my app, but for some reason, whenever I try and boot up thin, it tells me it can't find rails, script/console, however, works fine. Heck, even script/server works fine as long as I don't try and daemonize it, then it just fails without any errors. Any ideas on what the hell is going on? I'm using rvm with the default ubuntu ruby as my system ruby. I have set REE as the default ruby though. This was still happening back when I had only REE installed via their installer script too.

    I run Ubuntu and try to use the ffmpeg wrapper in Java from here: http://code.google.com/p/javacv/ It seems to work fine on other systems, but in Ubuntu the project crashes with the following mistake: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Error looking up function 'avcodec_decode_video2': /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libavcodec.so: undefined symbol: avcodec_decode_video2 ffmpeg is working great from the command line, though. JavaCV author recommended me to check this link: http://linux-tipps.blogspot.com/2009/05/pretending-package-is-installed-by.html Probably I'm doing something wrong, but it cannot reinstall libavcodec51 like this. So the questions are: 1. Is those solution above a good one so I should bring it to success somehow? 2. What are the other ways to solve the problem? Thank you for your suggestions in advance!

    Hello. I'm trying to compile some WiFi drivers I downloaded from SerialMonkey: http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Downloads It's about a driver for a Ralink rt73 chipset. I already got the build-essentials and the kernel-headers on my computer.   • 3 or 4 monitors with Nvidia and Ubuntu

    I saw that you are (were?) running 4 monitors with Ubuntu 8.10 and two Nvidia cards (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27113/how-to-use-3-monitors). I was curious if you were doing this with Xinerama, a hacked up TwinView config, or multiple X screens, or some other method? Does it work with compiz? I intend to run my Dell 30" in the middle with two 1280x1024 on the sides and continue to use one X screen, and run compiz, on Ubuntu 9.04. Currently, I am using 2 monitors with twinview and compiz, which runs fantastic. I just can't get the third monitor running (unless I enable it in its own X screen, and then enable Xinerama to enable windows to be dragged as if all one X screen, but this breaks compiz, and I don't care much for having separate X screen). I am very interested in knowing how you set up 4 monitors with 2 GPU's. Thanks!
