  • How do you splice out a part of an xvid encoded avi file, with ffmpeg? (no problems with other files

    Im using the following command, which works for most files, except what seems to be xvid encoded ones /usr/bin/ffmpeg -sameq -i file.avi -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:30 -ac 2 -r 25 -copyts output.avi So this should basically splice out 30 seconds of video + audio, starting from 1 minute mark. It does START encoding at the 00:01:00 mark but it goes all the way to the end of the file for some reason, ignoring that I want just 30 seconds. The output looks like this.   • Way to dim outside windows / Turn the lights feature

    I am looking for a way to replicate the "Dim out" or "Turn the lights off" feature (that can be seen on various video sites on the web) into Windows ? This will darken (dim out) the active window. It could be a windows shell extension/plugin or a video player plugin that has this feature. The reason for I am looking for this is that I have a rather large monitor and doesn't use the whole screen when watching movies.

  • Asus M4A79XTD-EVO / AMD Phenom II X4 965 Crashes / BSOD / Hangs / Restarts

    I'll try to be as concise as possible because I have a lot to say about my problem, but I'd rather say it when asked or when I feel it's necessary, just to make this initial reading clearer. For about a year and a half I have periods when my system has all the problems in the title (I'll use the word 'crash' for either one). I'll list some patterns and what I tried to do and what were the results, but the list is not exclusive: usually it crashes when a CPU-intensive operation is in progress, like a game or video encoding or HD movie rendering, but also sometimes crashes when I'm doing nothing after a first crash the system is very unstable and sometimes it crashes even during POST, or doesn't boot at all Some months ago I went to a local service (one that you just put your computer on the table and sit there with a guy and trying to figure out the problem, very rare these days) and they used OCCT and it crashed every time he changed some part to test it out (PSU, RAM, video card, HDD). The last one was the CPU. They changed the CPU and it didn't crash any more. Then when they put my CPU back, it also didn't crash. We figured that the trouble was the thermal paste (probably some 2 years old) because it was the only thing changed while testing. Up until 2 weeks ago, I haven't had any more problems. 2 weeks ago the problems reappeared. I changed again the thermal paste, put some Arctic Silver 5, and for about a week everything worked perfect (tried some games, video encoding, no more crashes). But again it started crashing in the same fashion as the first time. But now, instead, I figured out a very odd behaviour: when I start some of the apps above, in most cases it crashes if I start OCCT and turn on the CPU test, and run any of the programs above, it doesn't crash, even if the CPU is on 100% load (and 65-70 degrees Celsius temperature) if I shut down OCCT and continue using the programs, it crashes in a very short period of time (even if the CPU is on 5-10% load and 40 degrees) There are so many patterns and temporary solutions that I figured out in this year and a half period of time, that I can't include them all because I don't know which one are more relevant, but I'll happily provide any details you ask. My system is: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3400 MHz - 125W) MB: ASUS M4A79XTD - EVO RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4GB) CL8 1600MHz Video: HIS Radeon HD5770 1GB PSU: Corsair 750W HDD: Western Digital 1TB OS: Win 7 Enterprise 64 BIT (also tried with Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial and Win XP)

  • Turn Windows 7 desktop into grayscale

    Is there a universal way to turn Windows 7 Aero desktop, all windows, etc into grayscale? I had an option to do this in Intel video drivers on my old laptop, now I have NVIDIA and don't know how to replicate this effect. There might be a shader or filter that would cause Aero to render stuff into grayscale, but I was unable to find anything. Or must it be explicitly supported by video driver as a bonus?

  • Random Computer Crashes

    Ok, here's a wierd one for you all. Occasionally my PC here at work will crash in a very peculiar way. My dual monitors will suddenly go blank as if there is no longer a video signal, the USB mouse light will go dark and mouse stays unresponsive, the keyboard lights will not change status when the appropriate keys are pressed (Num/Caps/Scoll Lock). The CD Tray WILL open and close. But the computer will not respond to a ping request. For all intents & purposes it's as if the computer is off, except it wasn't intentional by me. The power light and internal fans are still on and I've now lost any unsaved work. Now here's where it gets wierd. This PC is part of a batch of PC's we got from a local vendor who does our initial system builds. Mine, and 6 other co-workers PCs all have the same issue. Originally we thought it was a bad combination of hardware, but through trial and error the only thing we haven't eliminated are the OS, Mobo & CPU. The problem was so bad for some of them that they ended up going back to their 5 year old dinosaurs in order to get some work done, for me the problem isn't as bad, maybe once every other day or so, but still enough to bite me in the ass if I've forgotten my ritualistic pressing of CTRL-S every 1-5 minutes. In this case we've tried two different video cards, two different power supplies, two different memory configurations, running on a UPS/not on UPS, updating/rolling back video drivers, three different bios revisions. The only things we haven't swapped are the mobo & cpu, mainly because a new mobo means a new Hardware Abstraction Layer, ie re-install of windows and there's alot of other software on this PC that takes forever to reload by hand. There was a base image that our systems team created with all the drivers installed and the basic setup of software our company uses, but they then must customize the setup for us programmers so it takes a while to get a new configuration up and going. I'm a programmer by day and am usually pretty good at diagnosing computer problems whether through trial and error or not. We've pretty much exhausted all the ideas we can think of here, short of a new mobo/cpu. Was hoping someone out there might have anything else we can try.. Relevant Parts: OS: XP Pro 32-bit Motherboard: Intel DG41RQ CPU: Intel Core-2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz Current BIOS Version/Date Intel Corp.   • Is Hyper-V server suitable as a desktop testbench?

    At the moment we are running a test bench with several desktop computers, that are reimaged every time we need to test on a different operation system. Also because different versions of our software is tested on each image, we have to install our software every time we want to test it. The problem we have had with going with a virtualization technology is that our software is depending on directx/opengl and 3D acceleration, and this has not been something that virtual machines have excelled at. With the release of SP1 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V has gotten better 3D acceleration support, so we are looking into virtualizing our testbench using this. Our test scenario would most likely be something close to this: 1. Remote into the hyper-V server and load the test VM needed for the current tests 2. Remote into the VM and install the new version of the software 3. Run the tests It would be nice, but not essential, if our support team could remote into the VMs to match the users OS+software combination when doing support. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of settup with hyper-v?

  • Flickering dual screens in Virtual Box Ubuntu 13.10 Guest

    I have Ubuntu 13.10 x64 installed as a guest in VirtualBox (under a Windows 8.1 host) and have the settings for the virtual machine setup to run with a monitor count of 2, 128MB video memory and 3D acceleration enabled. In my guest I have the virtual box additions installed (which allowed me to have two 1920x1080 screens). Here's a screenshot of my VM settings. My laptop is an Asus N550JV which has both Intel's HD Graphics 4600 GPU and Nvidia's GeForce GT 750M. By default though I believe the Intel GFX card is being used to render the VM. When I boot up the VM it loads perfectly on dual screens, however whenever I move the mouse from one screen to the other (I have a Dell S2340L running over a HDMI connection as a second screen) the screen flickers. I've tried a variety of settings changes in both Ubuntu and the VM settings, but cannot seem to stop this screen flicker. I also used the NVidia control panel in Windows to force the dedicated graphics card to always be used but found that the display driver sometimes crashed whilst working in the VM, resulting in my VM session being destroyed, so I figured it's better to stick with the Intel GFX as that appears to be more stable. I also tried without 3D acceleration but that was much worse, and if I ran the VM with a low amount of graphics memory it really struggled. Here's my dmesg output: http://pastebin.com/1LJuYWMj (not sure if this is helpful in this situation). I read some posts suggesting changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I don't appear to have an xorg.conf file. There were also a few posts (though related to Synergy) suggesting running xset -dpms but this command doesn't appear to have had any effect for me. As an additional note, I'm finding that window drawing in the guest is a little laggy/glitchy. For example, quickly scrolling through a web page may result in parts of the viewport displaying original content. Certainly I notice drawing issues most in the web browser, but it also impacts other software with parts of the window not being drawn when, say, switching between accounts in thunderbird. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

  • Why can't I "tear" a maximized Excel 2007 window in Windows 7

    In Windows 7, in most applications, when an application is maximized...I can "tear" the window (grab the title bar and drag) from it's maximized size and off the top of the screen and then I can drag it to wherever...but when Excel is maximized I do not have that functionality...Is there some trick to adding this functionality for Excel 2007...I can do it with Word 2007 so it doesn't appear to be Office itself. The machine is a Dell Latitude D820 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 110M video card...running the latest video drivers...

    I'm running a Windows 7 guest virtualised under QEMU and using libvirt on a Fedora 17 host, does anyone know if it's possible to create 2 video 'cards' (or a single dual-head) and a spice server for each and connect multiple spice clients to simulate a dual screen VM? Looking through the VMs xml configuration file I can't see a way to associate elements (eg. Spice servers) to elements (in this case, a qxl card). I'm sure qxl doesn't support the dual-head option but are multiple video elements possible?

    I'm using Nouveau video driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 video-card with Ubuntu 10.04. Screen flickers frequently, especially when I'm loading pages with many images/banners in Firefox. I tried to use proprietary NVIDIA driver, but it behaves itself even worse. Nv driver doesn't work at all. I also filed a bugreport in launchpad if you need any additional information.

  • Computer runs but monitor is on power saving mode?

    This stuff rarely happens, but when it does I simply restart my PC then it works fine. But today after several restart attempts it seems to be stuck. I tried removing the video card then switched to onboard video, same thing: The PC runs, (there's power and fans are working) but the monitor is stuck on power saving mode (blank screen). Is this a monitor or PC problem? Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm Windows 7 btw.

  • connecting to a network using route command

    I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers.   • Windows 7 not booting after failed SRT (SSD caching) install

    This is a fairly new computer, only about a month old. i7 2700k, z68 motherboard, with a 1.5tb WD black HD, and a 128gb crucial M4 ssd. I followed the instructions for setting up ssd caching, the SATA controller was set to RAID, I installed the intel software and enabled acceleration and it said everything went fine. But when I went to reboot, I received the lovely "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error message. I checked the bios, and it was booting from the correct HD (I tried the only other option anyway just in case, it was the ~50 odd gb of unformatted space left on the SSD) AFter that I entered the raid until (ctrl-i at boot) and removed the acceleration and deleted the raid array (because it was being used as a cache this was non destructive) Still no boot. So I reinstalled win7 directly on the SSD, booted, and checked the HDD to make sure it hadn't been wiped. It hadn't, all the files were still there, including all the windows stuff. I backed up my data to an external drive just in case, but I'd really like to get this install booting again. I trawled the webs a bit, and have tried entering recovery mode and using the bootrec.exe and bootsect.exe to fix it, but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm doing with those. My question is basically: How do I make my harddrive bootable again?

    I understand the 32 bit Vista limit in addressing only 4Gb of memory space but I have a very specific question: I have 3Gb installed on a Vista 32 bit system with a 512Mb video card, MSI X-58 board, Intel i7, 920 CPU. System Information currently shows: Installed Memory: 3.00Gb Available Physical Memory: 1.73 Gb My understanding is that the 512Mb video card occupies memory addresses between 4.0Gb and 3.5Gb and so does not subtract from the 3.0Gb of physical memory (correct my understanding if wrong) My Question: If I install another 1Gb of RAM, will my Available Memory increase to 2.73Gb?   • How to share screen & computer sound in skype on windows 7?

    I'd like to watch a video with sound on one computer, share the screen, and have the sound heard by the other computer, not going through the speakers. i.e. it should transmit the video from my screen and the same sound that's going to the speakers, right off the sound card. It is possible to do on XP, but not on 7. I have tried to use the stereo mix as the sound source, but it seems that skype blocks that.
