    My terminal failed to fetch, and some index files failed to download: W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-security/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'security.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. please help me to solve the problem in my terminal. I really appreciate the solution.

  • How can I merge the different keyboard indicators?

    Presently I use two application indicators showing a keyboard: input methods (iBus) keyboard layout Is there a way to make them merge into one single indicator icon ? What I have in mind is the equivalent of the messaging menu (gathering all that is related to communications) or the sound menu (gathering all the controls for sound). If it is too complicated to merge the indicators, is the merge planned for an upcoming Ubuntu release? I am on Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity as my environment.

  • Google Desktop shortcut Ctrl + Ctrl weird behavior

    Just noticed a weird behavior of Google Desktop shortcut Ctrl + Ctrl. This shortcut is supposed to bring Google Desktop search bar to the front. If Ctrl + Ctrl is pressed the search bar appears, but once you release one of the Ctrl keys it will disappear. If you hold one Ctrl key, and press the other twice the search bar will toggle it's state. Do you have any idea how this can be fixed and what can be causing this behaviour?

  • Will Ubuntu 11.04 work on my old pc?

    It has an old SiS based graphics chip with 64mb memory, there were never 3D drivers for them. Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't even boot on it and my laptop, a Lenovo N200 with intel 9something graphics 128mb so I'm really worried. Broadband prices don;t come cheap in South Africa so the download has to be worth it. I can wait for the shipment but I've since orderd 10.10 and it hasn't come, so I don't know if I'm barred from using that service since I've been sent a disc every release.

  • Schedule EC2 instances

    I want to be able to schedule some simple EC2 EBS backed instances (already configured) to start at 8am and stop at 4pm. This is only time I'll be using my integration server. Is there a simple services (paid or not) that I can use to handle this. All I found so far is to buy a cheap VPS at linode or somewhere and install ec2 tools and schedule via crontab, but what a PITA that is to. On the other end is something enterprisey like Rightscale but not my idea of simple.

  • How to move packages from the live image to a pool on the disc?

    Currently I'm using UCK and trying to make Edubuntu 12.04.1 DVD launch installer on 256Mb RAM: How to install Edubuntu on a system with low memory (256 Mb)? I was reading release notes for 12.10 and noticed that Language packs have now been moved off from the live image to a pool on the disc. How can I move other packages correctly so they would be available to the live system and for installation without network access?

  • RDS Replication across regions

    We are using Amazon AWS for our web services but given the recent instabilities in their infrastructure, we are trying to figure out how to run our application across multiple regions for additional redundancy. Ideally, we would run our entire app in a active-active configuration in multiple regions but our main concern is that we are using RDS, which I understand cannot replicate across regions. One possible solution (though we have not tried or proven it would work) would be to do mysqldump or EBS snapshots every hour or so but this would mean that we would be forced to run in an active-passive configuration. Our data would be at most an hour behind. This carries its own issues around data synchronization when we failover and the master comes back up, so its not the best solution. Are there any proven solutions for replicating RDS across regions?

  • Maximizing the Value of Software

    A few years ago we decided to increase our investments in documenting retail processes and architectures.  There were several goals but the main two were to help retailers maximize the value they derive from our software and help system integrators implement our software faster.  The sale is only part of our success metric -- its actually more important that the customer realize the benefits of the software.  That's when we actually celebrate. This week many of our customers are gathered in Chicago to discuss their successes during our annual Crosstalk conference.  That provides the perfect forum to announce the release of the Oracle Retail Reference Library.  The RRL is available for free to Oracle Retail customers and partners.  It contains 1000s of hours of work and represents years of experience in the retail industry.  The Retail Reference Library is composed of three offerings: Retail Reference Model We've been sharing the RRM for several years now, with lots of accolades.  The RRM is a set of business process diagrams at varying levels of granularity. This release marks the debut of Visio documents, which should make it easier for retailers to adopt and edit the diagrams.  The processes represent an approximation of the Oracle Retail software, but at higher levels they are pretty generic and therefore usable with other software as well.  Using these processes, the business and IT are better able to communicate the expectations of the software.  They can be used to guide customization when necessary, and help identify areas for optimization in the organization. Retail Reference Architecture When embarking on a software implementation project, it can be daunting to start from a blank sheet of paper.  So we offer the RRA, a comprehensive set of documents that describe the retail enterprise in terms of logical architecture, physical deployments, and systems integration.  These documents and diagrams describe how all the systems typically found in a retailer enterprise work together.  They serve as a way to jump-start implementations using best practices we've captured over the years. Retail Semantic Glossary Have you ever seen two people argue over something because they're using misaligned terminology?  Its a huge waste and happens all the time.  The Retail Semantic Glossary is a simple application that allows retailers to define terms and metrics in a centralized database.  This initial version comes with limited content with the goal of adding more over subsequent releases.  This is the single source for defining key performance indicators, metrics, algorithms, and terms so that the retail organization speaks in a consistent language.   • Alt-Tab in 12.04 requires pressing Enter to select app, can I disable that?

    Alt+Tab quickly opens the switcher for me, but tabbing over to the next app and releasing the keys will just leave it selected, not switch to it. I have to press Enter to actually switch to the app. How do I make it automatically switch when I release like every other switcher out there? Same behavior occurs when using Super+Tab with either the Compiz Ring Switcher or Shift Switcher. This seems different from the 11.10 behavior.
