• Recommended Linux distro to boot into RAM (from USB flash drive)?

  I don't mind if I use USB flash drive or CD-ROM, but I would prefer USB flash drive. I had a squizz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM On my own computer, I would be able to use any of the distros in the list. The largest "RAM required" in the list is 4GB. I would like to be able to use it on any computer, so I suppose 1GB or less would be better. I tried to follow the method described on Distro that I can load into RAM? but the distro listed there, from Israel Remix Team, doesn't seem to be available. Before I start trial-and-error on different distros, does anyone have any recommendations?

• When I boot it says "No any drive found" and turns off after upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04

  I did an upgrade on the weekend from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (karmic to lucid). Now, when I restart my computer, it goes through the regular load screen showing my P5K Asus motherboard, just like before but instead of showing the Ubuntu load screen, it tries to start grub but fails and then says "No any drive found" and the screen goes black. I've tried changing the drive configuration in the BIOS to AHCI or RAID and that didn't work. I've tried disabling JMICRON but to no avail. I'm running out of options here. Any advice?

• How can I use Ubuntu to rescue files from an NTFS drive?

  I reinstalled windows on the laptop of my daughter. Before doing this we made a copy of her music, pictures and so on. Unfortunately, the folder we created for the backup was empty (I checked after I reinstalled windows). Today a miracle happened, as suddenly the data were back but when Itried to copy them to another place thez disappeared again. Checking the drive with disk utility I got the message "filesystem is not clean". Is there a way to recover the data? Preferred solution would be a tool with a gui. The drive I need to repair is formatted in NTFS and is connected via usb to laptop.

• Will the other directories on my C drive still be visible?

  My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)? Thanks for any help.

• Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive: Accesing the data in the disk?

  Hi all! I have an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, 1TB, and lately I can't access the data on the drive. The shares (both built-in and created by me) are there, the security works, but when trying to access the data I get a "The network path was not found" message which is worrying, to say the least. I'd like to know if there is a way to get the data off the disks somehow, as some of the data in the drive (ie, pictures and videos of my 1.5 yrs old son) is hard if not impossible to find otherwise.   I have one SQL server that contain two drives on it and both drives are on SAN. C drive contains OS and V drive Contain pagefile.sys file. I rebooted my server and both drives was unmapped on SQL server. Some How one drive came (the OS drive) and created pagefile.sys on C drive and then I rebooted my server remapped the v drive. Now I have two pagefile.sys on C and V drive. But under Advance setting only V drive option is checked as pagefile. How do delete duplicate pagefile on C drive. • Is it common to have portable hard drive not recognize?

  I have a bad hard drive which could not be recognized by windows. If windows can recognize it, it could just be pure luck. There are better chance of it being recognize by plugging it at the usb back of the machine, rather than the front one. More interestingly, I have a usb cable which fork itself at one side ( i.e it has 2 heads at one side ). I can plug both heads to the machine and connect the portable hard drive on the other end of the usb cable? Can I get more voltage by doing this? I am guessing the front usb port doesn't have enough power. I am wondering if I buy a new portable usb hard drive, would it have easy read by plugging at the front usb port? I am not sure if I screw up the jumper connecting the front usb ports, but it is okay for other device such as usb stick and mouse.

• Image file can't be opened by windows store app if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk

  My question is described below: I have two disks, external hard disk and removable disk. They are formatted with EXT4. I put the same image in the disks, and use Ext2Fsd to mount the disks. I open the file in win8, and it will default open by the windows store app : photos. It will be success to open if the file is in the Ext4's removable disk. It will be failed to open if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk. I don't know why it will be failed to open if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk. Does anyone have similar experiences?

• How do I extract all the files in a VHD to a hard disk including permissions?

  I'd like to know wha thte best way is to make an exact copy of a vhd image and pu tit onto my hard disk. I've tried xcopy but there seems to be a number of issues rlated to permissions when doing this. Ideally I'd like to copy the bits so that they match exactly on the new drive. I encountered this when trying to restore a vista backup only to discover the idiots work who decided to not let me restore a 400 gig image to a 1 TB drive size. I've sucessfully mounted the drive in Win 7 which is the environment in which I'm trying ot copy these files.

• Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

  So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

• Can't change permission/ownership/group of external hard drive on Ubuntu.

  I have an external hard drive connected to my Linux box. I wanted to setup a web server to access files on it, but the permission on all files and directories on the drive are "rwx" for the owner which is my local login, and the group is the "root" group. I need the files readable by the apache user, I was trying to set all files to be "chmod a+rwx -R *", but this doesn't do anything (gives no errros, just has no effect.) I tried chaning the group using "chgrp" to my user group, but that won't work either, it gives me errors that I lack permission even when I run all those commands as sudo! What's up with this hard drive??? "sudo chmod a+rwx *" should work on anything, right?

I also know that you can use the mklink command to make sym links (shortcuts) from the command line: MKLINK [[/D] | [/H] | [/J]] Link Target /D Creates a directory symbolic link. Default is a file symbolic link. /H Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link. /J Creates a Directory Junction. Link specifies the new symbolic link name. Target specifies the path (relative or absolute) that the new link refers to. When I try to use the /j switch to make a hard link ("junction") instead of a simple shortcut to NUL, I get: C:\>mklink /j "C:\Program Files\MyNewHardlinkFolder" NUL Local volumes are required to complete the operation. I can create shortcuts to NUL all day long using the /d switch, but I would much prefer the hard link. Any ideas?

But now, when I run TimeMachine to backup my stuff, of course it only backups what's on the system disk. Is there a way how to also backup the connected external hard drive together with TimeMachine? Maybe there's a trick to get this work, with a fake folder that's actually the mounted drive? What could I do?

• Access a windows dynamic hard drive through a virtual machine on ubuntu?

  I have a Windows 7 OS and am thinking about transitioning to a dual boot set up with Ubuntu 12.04. From what I recall, it is not possible to natively access Dynamic Windows Partitions in a Linux OS. My thought is that it might be possible to have a virtual machine (running windows) installed within Ubuntu access the physical dynamic drive. The problem comes to whether VMWare can access the physical disk "high enough" to be able to mount it within the windows virtual machine as a native device or if it gets passed through from the native Linux OS. This is really the only thing holding me back from switching to a dual-boot set up as the dynamic disk is made up of 4 or 5 hard drives and I would very much like access to the data on both OS's. Alternatively, is there another solution for combining multiple physical hard drives into one virtual hard drive that would be readable on both OS's?

  The Yubico PAM Module seems to require changes to the PAM stack for each user that will be authenticated with a YubiKey. Specifically, it seems that each user's client identity must be added to the right PAM configuration file before the user can be authenticated. While it makes sense to add authorized keys to an authentication database such as /etc/yubikey_mappings or ~/.yubico/authorized_yubikeys, it seems like a bad practice to have to edit the PAM stack itself for each individual user. I would definitely like to avoid having to hard-code user identities into the PAM stack this way. So, is it possible to avoid hard-coding the id parameter to the pam_yubico.so module itself? If not, are there any other PAM modules that can leverage YubiKey authentication without hard-coding the stack?

  In Virtual Machine Manager admin console, I used the 'New virtual machine' wizard and created a machine from an existing template. When I got to the Configure Hardware step, I selected the primary hard disk (which is a dynamic) disk and tried to increase it's maximum size, but this control is disabled so I can't increase it. It's not big enough for my purposes. how do I increase the maximum size of the hard-disk? Thanks. Edit: I am able to add a second hard disk of a size I specify. That's not useful though as I'm trying to install some software, some of which insists on being on drive C.

  I have two PC laptops. On one of the two PC's (Win 7) I Aborted a back up and ejected the drive. Now that same pc wants to format the drive. I plugged the drive into the other pc (Win XP) and that one reads the drive and all data stored. Why does one want to format the drive and the other does not? .... My apologies for not being clearer with my original question and thanks for the responses, so; The drive is not a flash stick, its an external WD Hard drive plugged in via the USB. The two tips provided did not resolve the issue. Strangely, the pc with win XP can read the drive but the pc that the HD was plugged into when the backup was aborted still wants to format the drive.   Right Now I'm using hdparm command in unix to shut down the hard disk but there are few issues with it. when it wakes back up it consumes lots power. Is there any other way to do it? Many times when I put my hard disk to sleep, I can see few bursts at the beginning and then after a while it goes to sleep. I think its because of the journaling system in ubuntu (which I use) Have anybody encountered that? What would be the best linux/unix operating system (eg: ubuntu/centos/redhat) to work on extensive hard disk operations? • Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • 12.04: Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • GRUB-2 Bootloader fails to load for lack of floppy drive. Ubuntu 10.4 & Windows XP

  2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 Hello all, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values. I've gone through the Grub-2 page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. I would certainly appreciate any insight, here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub. The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point. At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. • How to handle server failure in an n-tier architecture?

  Imagine I have an n-tier architecture in an auto-scaled cloud environment with say: a load balancer in a failover pair reverse proxy tier web app tier db tier Each tier needs to connect to the instances in the tier below. What are the standard ways of connecting tiers to make them resilient to failure of nodes in each tier? i.e. how does each tier get the IP addresses of each node in the tier below? For example if all reverse proxies should route traffic to all web app nodes, how could they be set up so that they don't send traffic to dead web app nodes, and so that when new web app nodes are brought online they can send traffic to it? I could run an agent that would update all the configs to all the nodes, but it seems inefficient. I could put an LB pair between each tier, so the tier above only needs to connect to the load balancers, but how do I handle the problem of the LBs dying? This just seems to shunt the problem of tier A needing to know the IPs of all nodes in tier B, to all nodes in tier A needing to know the IPs of all LBs between tiers A and B. For some applications, they can implement retry logic if they contact a node in the tier below that doesn't respond, but is there any way that some middleware could direct traffic to only live nodes in the following tier? If I was hosting on AWS I could use an ELB between tiers, but I want to know how I could achieve the same functionality myself. I've read (briefly) about heartbeat and keepalived - are these relevant here? What are the virtual IPs they talk about and how are they managed? Are there still single points of failure using them?
