• What is the probable failure - no BSOD, no event log, monitors sleeping, force reboot required

  Every 3 to 15 days, my PC freezes. This typically happens when the computer is idle, I'm coming home from work, back from vacation, etc. It's never happened while using my computer. The monitors are in power save mode The Caps Lock light on the (wireless) keyboard doesn't work Ctrl-alt-del has no effect, mouse (wireless) has no effect The hardware reset button and single press of power putton have no effect Computer does not appear on the network No BSOD, no memory dump Event logs have no errors or indications of problems near the time of crash. Only messages after reboot indicating that there was a reboot without a clean shutdown. Windows is set to never put the computer to sleep (just the display) Here are the vital stats of the build: OS Windows 8 Pro 64-bit CPU Intel i5-2400 Mobo Intel BOXDP67DE Micro ATX GPU MSI N460GTX Cyclone768D5/OC RAM CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 PSU SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold System Drive Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD Data Drive 2 x Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB in hardware RAID 1 Optical Lite-On DVD burner IHAS424-98 And here is the story of how the problem developed and what I've done to diagnose: January 2011, system built with Windows 7 64-bit, runs great. March 2011, Intel replaced the mobo because of the bad sata controllers. October 2012, upgrade to Windows 8 (problems start shortly after). January 2013, system freezes and causes network to fail for the whole house. Unplug the network cable and other devices and PCs can use the internet. Plug it back in, internet goes away for everyone. Reboot and everything is fine. March 2013, install Intel Gigabit CT PCI-E NIC, disable mobo nic in bios. Network strangeness goes away. Freezes are less frequent. Memtest shows no problems (20 passes). Early June 2013, replace Antec PSU with SeaSonic PSU. Mid June 2013, replace OCZ Vertex 2 SSD with Samsung SSD. Late June 2013, get frustrated and hope the community has some good ideas (I'm running out of budget to replace parts). My next plan of attack is setting "Turn off display" to Never and using a screen saver to see how that reacts on the next freeze. It makes me sad to waste power for up to 15 days though. Has anyone out there seen a problem like this? Any ideas on what kind of malfunction would act this way? Ideas of other diagnostic steps to take?

  I recently got a brand new computer. Everything was fine until I plugged my electric guitar into my amp. When I switch on my guitar amp (guitar speaker) I can hear a weird noise. It sounds like the noise that that goes through your speakers when you put your mobile phone next to it. There is nothing wrong with my guitar or guitar amp and I didn't have any similar problems with my old computer. Can anyone help me?

• Firefox on-screen buttons disappearing

  Firefox 8.0.1 ALL the on-sceen buttons on ALL sites have disappeared. I'm not talking about the toolbar buttons, I'm talking about buttons like NEXT and BACK and CONTINUE and PAY and GO TO BASKET and CONTACT US that should appear in varous parts of the screenh. Sometimes they are still visable (and clickable) as text, but in other cases they have disappeared entirely, although a click symbol still appears if you can guess where they are and mouse over them.

• How to know that my IP is invalid

  I have a script running that will start up an interface with a new IP. If the script comes up with an IP that is already in use i am in trouble. Is it possible that the script set up the new Ip, detects that this IP is already in use and then check the next one, until it finds an ip that works ? B=192.168.1. • E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libattr1 ? in Ubuntu

  I am working with Ubuntu latest version. While installing via apt-get install i tried to abort that by pressing Ctrl+Z. It terminate successfully ;). But next time when i tried to use apt-get, i got some error "lock" and "temporally unavailable" something like that and **I unfortunately i delete the /var/lib/dkpg folder.** after that i cant install anything from apt-get, getting an error. E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libattr1 so how can i solve this issue?

• I can't ping to my EC2 instance although icmp has been set

• Why does starting a process in the background prevent me from recalling previous commands in the command prompt?

  I'm running asynchronous command prompt commands in cmd on Windows 7 64-bit and for some reason it effects my ability to recall previous commands just after I run them; for example: I might run something like: start /B rmdir /Q /S .\some_massive_directory And next I try to press the up arrow to recall the text of the previous command..but nothing happens...is this because whatever data structure is holding my commands is locked by the process I sent to the background, or is it because I am using a network mapped drive to run my command on?

• Cost of running colour laser printers.

  Has anyone got a good list of the costs of running colour laser printers, both for colour and black that take into account different usage volumes. E.g if the dram needs replacing after 20,000 pages, but I am only do 10,000 in the next 3 years, I don’t care about the cost of a new dram. So a simple “cost per page” figure is each printer is not good enough to be useful in real life. (A spread sheet / website that I could type my own usage values into would be great.)

• Weird problem in windows XP - apostrophes and double quotes don't show up until the key has been pre

  When I type a single double quote, no character is displayed. if I type another character, the apostrophe and the next character appear at the same time. This applies to double quotes (") and apostrophes ('). What could possibly be causing this? This occurs in all applications I have tested - wordpad, firefox, ms word etc.

• Apache: Limit the Number of Requests/Traffic per IP?

  I would like to only allow one IP to use up to, say 1GB, of traffic per day, and if that limit is exceeded, all requests from that IP are then dropped until the next day. However, a more simple solution where the connection is dropped after a certain amount of requests would suffice. Is there already some sort of module that can do this? Or perhaps I can achieve this through something like iptables? Thanks

• Move Items per rule after they are one day old

  I'm not even sure if this is possible with Outlook's current rule set but I thought I'd ask. I'd like emails that meet certain characteristics to automatically be moved from my inbox after they are a day old. I get a lot of notification emails that I end up having to remove the next day manually since I get new ones to replace them each day. So a rule would be like: If the email is from [email protected] and older then 1 day move to already read folder.

  I want to put a web application on my Linux server: I will first explain to you what the web app will do and then I will tell you what I did so far to secure my brand new Linux system. The app will be a classified ads website (like gumtree.co.uk) where users can sell their items, upload images, send to and receive emails from the admin. It will use SSL for some pages. I will need SSH. So far, what I did to secure my stock Ubuntu (latest version) is the following: NOTE: I probably did some things that will prevent the application from doing all its tasks, so please let me know of that. My machine's sole purpose will be hosting the website. (I put numbers as bullet points so you can refer to them more easily) 1) Firewall I installed Uncomplicated Firewall. Deny IN & OUT by default Rules: Allow IN & OUT: HTTP, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, SSH, UDP port 53 (DNS), UDP port 123 (SNTP), SSL, port 443 (the ones I didn't allow were FTP, NFS, Samba, VNC, CUPS) When I install MySQL & Apache, I will open up Port 3306 IN & OUT. 2) Secure the partition in /etc/fstab, I added the following line at the end: tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults,rw 0 0 Then in console: mount -o remount /dev/shm 3) Secure the kernel In the file /etc/sysctl.conf, there are a few different filters to uncomment. I didn't know which one was relevant to web app hosting. Which one should I activate? They are the following: A) Turn on Source Address Verification in all interfaces to prevent spoofing attacks B) Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv4 C) Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv6 D) Do no accept ICMP redirects (we are not a router) E) Accept ICMP redirects only for gateways listed in our default gateway list F) Do not send ICMP redirects G) Do not accept IP source route packets (we are not a router) H) Log Martian Packets 4) Configure the passwd file Replace "sh" by "false" for all accounts except user account and root. I also did it for the account called sshd. I am not sure whether it will prevent SSH connection (which I want to use) or if it's something else. 5) Configure the shadow file In the console: passwd -l to lock all accounts except user account. 6) Install rkhunter and chkrootkit 7) Install Bum Disabled those services: "High performance mail server", "unreadable (kerneloops)","unreadable (speech-dispatcher)","Restores DNS" (should this one stay on?) 8) Install Apparmor_profiles 9) Install clamav & freshclam (antivirus and update) What did I do wrong and what should I do more to secure this Linux machine? I have a low-right user able to connect via SSH and once connected, I simply su in order to gain more rights. Now when using a sFTP client, I use my low-right user and am thus able to do next to nothing. My question is : Is it possible to change user after login using 3rd party client, such as Transmit, Cyberduck, Filezilla ? PS : Mac clients would be great ;)

• OpenSSH (Windows) does not forward X11

  I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 in VM and I wanted to do X11 forwarding to my host (Win 8), so far it works fine using PuTTY and XMing server for Windows. But I am curious why it doesn't work if I use OpenSSH binaries (it comes together with Git for windows). This is what I've done so far: ssh -X [email protected] (also tried with -Y) then gedit but received error of Cannot open display. echo $DISPLAY came out as empty. So, I try to export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 but it still won't work. The DISPLAY environment that I set is exactly as when it runs with Putty. I also try changing the DISPLAY to 192.168.2.3:0.0 and other display number as well, but still it won't work. Of course I could just use Putty to make it work, but I was wondering why OpenSSH binaries does not work. I have enabled all settings required in both /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config.   quick question say i wanted to download a file of considerable size 10gb say and i sent the GET request to a web server to download that file question is, if the client stopped reading the TCP connection, would the entire file still be downloaded, or does it depend on the client sending back an ack or something to the circuit asking for the next packet hope that makes sense This question was originally asked involving the Tor network, but i just want to know how a standard internet connection would handle this Thanks

• How do I install Skype on computer so that anyone who logs in does NOT have to go through the initial config?

  I installed Skype when logged on to the (local) admin account. Now, when I log off that, and log on as myname on the domain, I have to click through the intial setup steps (after you've already run the installer) of Skype. So, I have to click next to get through the mic setup/test, and it asks me if I want to take a pic. How do I get it so that any person who logs in can just open Skype and go straight to the login screen? Windows 7 64 bit, 2008R2
