  • Why is it possible to have an interface without a return type in PHP?

    - by streetparade
    Why is it possible to create an interface without specifying a return type? Why doesn't this make this interface unusable? This makes it more Clear: Interface run { public function getInteger(); } class MyString implements run { public function myNumber() { } public function getInteger() { return "Not a number"; } } In Java every Interface has a return type like Integer, String or Void I know that PHP is unfortunately a loosely typed Language but isn't there a Solution to that Problem? Is it possible to define an Interface with a return type like Integer?

  • Using jquery statement within a jquery data object

    - by richardverbruggen
    As part of a jquery function u use this ajax post statement to get some reaction from a server. I want to pass some arguments to my test page. But these must be variables and are declared on the previous lines (iid and inst) How can i put these variables within the data object marked with the XX? iid = $(this).attr('iid'); inst = $(this).attr('inst'); $.post("test.php", { inst: XX, iid: XX},function(data){ alert("Data Loaded: " + data); });

  • Object directing to a property when accessed as an iterable

    - by ThE_JacO
    I'm trying to figure out if there's an elegant and concise way to have a class accessing one of its own properties when "used" as a dictionary, basically redirecting all the methods that'd be implemented in an ordered dictionary to one of its properties. Currently I'm inheriting from IterableUserDict and explicitly setting its data to another property, and it seems to be working, but I know that UserDict is considered sort of old, and I'm concerned I might be overlooking something. What I have: class ConnectionInterface(IterableUserDict): def __init__(self, hostObject): self._hostObject= hostObject self.ports= odict.OrderedDict() self.inputPorts= odict.OrderedDict() self.outputPorts= odict.OrderedDict() self.data= self.ports This way I expect the object to behave and respond (and be used) the way I mean it to, except I want to get a freebie ordered dictionary behaviour on its property "ports" when it's iterated, items are gotten by key, something is looked up ala if this in myObject, and so on. Any advice welcome, the above seems to be working fine, but I have an odd itch that I might be missing something. Thanks in advance.

  • onclick from an Object's button doesn't work

    - by 730
    I instantiate an object, with an argument which is a button. When the button of an instance is clicked, it should run a function, but it doesn't. In the full version of the code, Chrome gives this message in the console: "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'onclick' of undefined" HTML: <textarea id='txt' readonly rows='5' cols='40'></textarea> <button id='btn' type='button'>click</button> JS: var btn = document.getElementById('btn'); var txt = document.getElementById('txt'); var foo = new Foo(btn); function Foo(btn) { this.button = btn; } Foo.prototype.buy = function() { txt.value = 'Foo Bar'; }; Foo.button.onclick = function() { foo.buy(); }; Fiddle

  • Removing a character from JSONObject?

    - by RandomlyKnighted
    My JSONObject has some random characters contained within the string so I'm trying to remove them. I've tried this but with no luck. String result = s.substring(1, s.length() - 2); JSONObject json_data = new JSONObject(result); if (json_data.has("[")) { json_data.remove("["); } if (json_data.has("]")) { json_data.remove("]"); } if (json_data.has(",")) { json_data.remove(","); } It's still not removing the characters from the JSONObject. Am I checking the JSONObject for the characters incorrectly?

  • Why does tomcat like deleting my context.xml file?

    - by staticsan
    I'm developing a web-based Java application at work and (obviously) have to run it locally during development. I've figured out the Tomcat docs and have a suitable context.xml file in /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/ but every so often, Tomcat decides to delete it! Which means I have to put it back and restart Tomcat. Why does it do this? I have searched the Tomcat docs about it and am none the wiser. (Oh yes: it's not actually called context.xml but owners.xml as that's the HTTP path prefix for this application.) Update I've now seen Tomcat delete the file whilst Tomcat was running. I think I need to file a bug...

  • What is the list of special variables available when writing a shell command for a context menu

    - by giovanni.pellicciotta
    When extending the Windows' shell context menu (e.g. for adding an 'Open command here' prompt on directories), a 'command' key needs to be created in the registry. The value of this 'command' key apparently can be any valid command line. I want to know which 'special variables' are available for use inside this command line. For example, I use following command for opening and cmd window from within a directory's context menu (*): cmd.exe /e:on /f:on /s /k pushd "%V" I cannot find any reference to what %V actually means or what the full list of such variables is. (*) Following registry keys are created for this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\cmdshell] @=Open Command Prompt Here" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\cmdshell\command] @="cmd.exe /e:on /f:on /s /k pushd \"%V\""

  • SQL SERVER – Guest Posts – Feodor Georgiev – The Context of Our Database Environment – Going Beyond the Internal SQL Server Waits – Wait Type – Day 21 of 28

    - by pinaldave
    This guest post is submitted by Feodor. Feodor Georgiev is a SQL Server database specialist with extensive experience of thinking both within and outside the box. He has wide experience of different systems and solutions in the fields of architecture, scalability, performance, etc. Feodor has experience with SQL Server 2000 and later versions, and is certified in SQL Server 2008. In this article Feodor explains the server-client-server process, and concentrated on the mutual waits between client and SQL Server. This is essential in grasping the concept of waits in a ‘global’ application plan. Recently I was asked to write a blog post about the wait statistics in SQL Server and since I had been thinking about writing it for quite some time now, here it is. It is a wide-spread idea that the wait statistics in SQL Server will tell you everything about your performance. Well, almost. Or should I say – barely. The reason for this is that SQL Server is always a part of a bigger system – there are always other players in the game: whether it is a client application, web service, any other kind of data import/export process and so on. In short, the SQL Server surroundings look like this: This means that SQL Server, aside from its internal waits, also depends on external waits and settings. As we can see in the picture above, SQL Server needs to have an interface in order to communicate with the surrounding clients over the network. For this communication, SQL Server uses protocol interfaces. I will not go into detail about which protocols are best, but you can read this article. Also, review the information about the TDS (Tabular data stream). As we all know, our system is only as fast as its slowest component. This means that when we look at our environment as a whole, the SQL Server might be a victim of external pressure, no matter how well we have tuned our database server performance. Let’s dive into an example: let’s say that we have a web server, hosting a web application which is using data from our SQL Server, hosted on another server. The network card of the web server for some reason is malfunctioning (think of a hardware failure, driver failure, or just improper setup) and does not send/receive data faster than 10Mbs. On the other end, our SQL Server will not be able to send/receive data at a faster rate either. This means that the application users will notify the support team and will say: “My data is coming very slow.” Now, let’s move on to a bit more exciting example: imagine that there is a similar setup as the example above – one web server and one database server, and the application is not using any stored procedure calls, but instead for every user request the application is sending 80kb query over the network to the SQL Server. (I really thought this does not happen in real life until I saw it one day.) So, what happens in this case? To make things worse, let’s say that the 80kb query text is submitted from the application to the SQL Server at least 100 times per minute, and as often as 300 times per minute in peak times. Here is what happens: in order for this query to reach the SQL Server, it will have to be broken into a of number network packets (according to the packet size settings) – and will travel over the network. On the other side, our SQL Server network card will receive the packets, will pass them to our network layer, the packets will get assembled, and eventually SQL Server will start processing the query – parsing, allegorizing, generating the query execution plan and so on. So far, we have already had a serious network overhead by waiting for the packets to reach our Database Engine. There will certainly be some processing overhead – until the database engine deals with the 80kb query and its 20 subqueries. The waits you see in the DMVs are actually collected from the point the query reaches the SQL Server and the packets are assembled. Let’s say that our query is processed and it finally returns 15000 rows. These rows have a certain size as well, depending on the data types returned. This means that the data will have converted to packages (depending on the network size package settings) and will have to reach the application server. There will also be waits, however, this time you will be able to see a wait type in the DMVs called ASYNC_NETWORK_IO. What this wait type indicates is that the client is not consuming the data fast enough and the network buffers are filling up. Recently Pinal Dave posted a blog on Client Statistics. What Client Statistics does is captures the physical flow characteristics of the query between the client(Management Studio, in this case) and the server and back to the client. As you see in the image, there are three categories: Query Profile Statistics, Network Statistics and Time Statistics. Number of server roundtrips–a roundtrip consists of a request sent to the server and a reply from the server to the client. For example, if your query has three select statements, and they are separated by ‘GO’ command, then there will be three different roundtrips. TDS Packets sent from the client – TDS (tabular data stream) is the language which SQL Server speaks, and in order for applications to communicate with SQL Server, they need to pack the requests in TDS packets. TDS Packets sent from the client is the number of packets sent from the client; in case the request is large, then it may need more buffers, and eventually might even need more server roundtrips. TDS packets received from server –is the TDS packets sent by the server to the client during the query execution. Bytes sent from client – is the volume of the data set to our SQL Server, measured in bytes; i.e. how big of a query we have sent to the SQL Server. This is why it is best to use stored procedures, since the reusable code (which already exists as an object in the SQL Server) will only be called as a name of procedure + parameters, and this will minimize the network pressure. Bytes received from server – is the amount of data the SQL Server has sent to the client, measured in bytes. Depending on the number of rows and the datatypes involved, this number will vary. But still, think about the network load when you request data from SQL Server. Client processing time – is the amount of time spent in milliseconds between the first received response packet and the last received response packet by the client. Wait time on server replies – is the time in milliseconds between the last request packet which left the client and the first response packet which came back from the server to the client. Total execution time – is the sum of client processing time and wait time on server replies (the SQL Server internal processing time) Here is an illustration of the Client-server communication model which should help you understand the mutual waits in a client-server environment. Keep in mind that a query with a large ‘wait time on server replies’ means the server took a long time to produce the very first row. This is usual on queries that have operators that need the entire sub-query to evaluate before they proceed (for example, sort and top operators). However, a query with a very short ‘wait time on server replies’ means that the query was able to return the first row fast. However a long ‘client processing time’ does not necessarily imply the client spent a lot of time processing and the server was blocked waiting on the client. It can simply mean that the server continued to return rows from the result and this is how long it took until the very last row was returned. The bottom line is that developers and DBAs should work together and think carefully of the resource utilization in the client-server environment. From experience I can say that so far I have seen only cases when the application developers and the Database developers are on their own and do not ask questions about the other party’s world. I would recommend using the Client Statistics tool during new development to track the performance of the queries, and also to find a synchronous way of utilizing resources between the client – server – client. Here is another example: think about similar setup as above, but add another server to the game. Let’s say that we keep our media on a separate server, and together with the data from our SQL Server we need to display some images on the webpage requested by our user. No matter how simple or complicated the logic to get the images is, if the images are 500kb each our users will get the page slowly and they will still think that there is something wrong with our data. Anyway, I don’t mean to get carried away too far from SQL Server. Instead, what I would like to say is that DBAs should also be aware of ‘the big picture’. I wrote a blog post a while back on this topic, and if you are interested, you can read it here about the big picture. And finally, here are some guidelines for monitoring the network performance and improving it: Run a trace and outline all queries that return more than 1000 rows (in Profiler you can actually filter and sort the captured trace by number of returned rows). This is not a set number; it is more of a guideline. The general thought is that no application user can consume that many rows at once. Ask yourself and your fellow-developers: ‘why?’. Monitor your network counters in Perfmon: Network Interface:Output queue length, Redirector:Network errors/sec, TCPv4: Segments retransmitted/sec and so on. Make sure to establish a good friendship with your network administrator (buy them coffee, for example J ) and get into a conversation about the network settings. Have them explain to you how the network cards are setup – are they standalone, are they ‘teamed’, what are the settings – full duplex and so on. Find some time to read a bit about networking. In this short blog post I hope I have turned your attention to ‘the big picture’ and the fact that there are other factors affecting our SQL Server, aside from its internal workings. As a further reading I would still highly recommend the Wait Stats series on this blog, also I would recommend you have the coffee break conversation with your network admin as soon as possible. • JavaScriptSerializer().Serialize(Entity Framework object)

    - by loviji
    May be, it is not so problematic for you. but i'm trying first time with json serialization. and also read other articles in stackowerflow. I have created Entity Framework data model. then by method get all data from object: private uqsEntities _db = new uqsEntities(); //get all data from table sysMainTableColumns where tableName=paramtableName public List<sysMainTableColumns> getDataAboutMainTable(string tableName) { return (from column in _db.sysMainTableColumns where column.TableName==tableName select column).ToList(); } my webservice: public string getDataAboutMainTable() { penta.DAC.Tables dictTable = new penta.DAC.Tables(); var result = dictTable.getDataAboutMainTable("1"); return new JavaScriptSerializer().Serialize(result); } and jQuery ajax method $('#loadData').click(function() { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "WS/ConstructorWS.asmx/getDataAboutMainTable", data: "{}", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(msg) { $("#jsonResponse").html(msg); var data = eval("(" + msg + ")"); //do something with data }, error: function(msg) { } }); }); problem with data, code fails there. and i think i'm not use JavaScriptSerializer().Serialize() method very well. Please, tell me, what a big mistake I made in C# code?

  • Calling C# object method from IronPython

    - by Jason
    I'm trying to embed a scripting engine in my game. Since I'm writing it in C#, I figured IronPython would be a great fit, but the examples I've been able to find all focus on calling IronPython methods in C# instead of C# methods in IronPython scripts. To complicate things, I'm using Visual Studio 2010 RC1 on Windows 7 64 bit. IronRuby works like I expect it would, but I'm not very familiar with Ruby or Python syntax. What I'm doing: ScriptEngine engine = Python.CreateEngine(); ScriptScope scope = engine.CreateScope(); //Test class with a method that prints to the screen. scope.SetVariable("test", this); ScriptSource source = engine.CreateScriptSourceFromString("test.SayHello()", Microsoft.Scripting.SourceCodeKind.Statements); source.Execute(scope); This generates an error, "'TestClass' object has no attribute 'SayHello'" This exact set up works fine with IronRuby though using "self.test.SayHello()" I'm wary using IronRuby though because it doesn't appear as mature as IronPython. If it's close enough, I might go with that though. Any ideas? I know this has to be something simple.

  • jQuery "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected"

    - by Oskar Kjellin
    I have the below code that does not seem to work at all :( I keep getting: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected The error seems to occur when the timeout is done. So if I raise the timeout with 10 seconds the error holds for another 10 seconds. I want to be able to update the number of friends online async. The number is shown with the following html: <a href="" id="showChat" >Friends online <strong id="friendsOnline">(?)</strong></a> The friends part is set at the first run, but when the timeout calls back it does not fire again. Also, I cannot see on which line the error occurs because if I want to break on the error it just shows "no source code" etc. The code below is the code I'm using. Thanks! <script src="http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.3.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src='/Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.js' type="text/javascript"></script> <script src='/Scripts/MicrosoftMvcAjax.js' type="text/javascript"></script> <script src='/Scripts/jquery.autocomplete.js' type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { UpdateFriendsOnline(); function UpdateFriendsOnline() { window.setTimeout("UpdateFriendsOnline()", 1000); $.get("/Account/GetFriendsOnline", function(data) { $("#friendsOnline").html("(" + data + ")"); }); } }); </script>

  • Diffence between FQL query and Graph API object access

    - by jwynveen
    What's the difference between accessing user data with the Facebook Graph API (http://graph.facebook.com/btaylor) and using the Graph API to make a FQL query of the same user (https://api.facebook.com/method/fql.query?query=QUERY). Also, does anyone know which of them the Facebook Developer Toolkit (for ASP.NET) uses? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to access the logged in user's birthday after they begin a Facebook Connect session on my site, but when I use the toolkit it doesn't return it. However, if I make a manual call to the Graph API for that user object, it does return it. It's possible I might have something wrong with my call from the toolkit. I think I may need to include the session key, but I'm not sure how to get it. Here's the code I'm using: _connectSession = new ConnectSession(APPLICATION_KEY, SECRET_KEY); try { if (!_connectSession.IsConnected()) { // Not authenticated, proceed as usual. statusResponse = "Please sign-in with Facebook."; } else { // Authenticated, create API instance _facebookAPI = new Api(_connectSession); // Load user user user = _facebookAPI.Users.GetInfo(); statusResponse = user.ToString(); ViewData["fb_user"] = user; } } catch (Exception ex) { //An error happened, so disconnect session _connectSession.Logout(); statusResponse = "Please sign-in with Facebook."; }

  • Salesforce - Update/Upsert custom object entry

    - by Phill Pafford
    UPDATE: It's working as expected just needed to pass the correct Id, DUH!~ I have a custom object in salesforce, kind of like the comments section on a case for example. When you add a new comment it has a date/time stamp for that entry, I wanted to update the previous case comment date/time stamp when a new case comment is created. I wanted to do an UPDATE like this: $updateFields = array( 'Id'=>$comment_id, // This is the Id for each comment 'End_Date__c'=>$record_last_modified_date ); function sfUpdateLastCommentDate($sfConnection, $updateFields) { try { $sObjectCustom = new SObject(); $sObjectCustom->type = 'Case_Custom__c'; $sObjectCustom->fields = $updateFields; $createResponse = $sfConnection->update(array($sObjectCustom)); } catch(Exception $e) { $error_msg = SALESFORCE_ERROR." \n"; $error_msg .= $e->faultstring; $error_msg .= $sfConnection->getLastRequest(); $error_msg .= SALESFORCE_MESSAGE_BUFFER_NEWLINE; // Send error message mail(ERROR_TO_EMAIL, ERROR_EMAIL_SUBJECT, $error_msg, ERROR_EMAIL_HEADER_WITH_CC); exit; } } I've also tried the UPSERT but I get the error: Missing argument 2 for SforcePartnerClient::upsert() Any help would be great

  • Javascript object dependencies

    - by Anurag
    In complex client side projects, the number of Javascript files can get very large. However, for performance reasons it's good to concatenate these files, and compress the resulting file for sending over the wire. I am having problems in concatenating these as the dependencies are included after they are needed in some cases. For instance, there are 2 files: /modules/Module.js <requires Core.js> /modules/core/Core.js The directories are recursively traversed, and Module.js gets included before Core.js, which causes errors. This is just a simple example where dependencies could span across directories, and there could be other complex cases. There are no circular dependencies though. The Javascript structure I follow is similar to Java packages, where each file defines a single Object (I'm using MooTools, but that's irrelevant). The structure of each javascript file and the dependencies is always consistent: Module.js var Module = new Class({ Implements: Core, ... }); Core.js var Core = new Class({ ... }); What practices do you usually follow to handle dependencies in projects where the number of Javascript files is huge, and there are inter-file dependencies?

  • jQuery attribute selector inside a jQuery object

    - by chifliiiii
    Im trying to set up a quicksand with multiple filters and the approach im taking in the following which im not sure if its the best. $filteredItems = $containerClone.find('.portfolio-item-marketing').filter(function(index){ if ( $filterA != 'all' && $filterB != 'all' ) { return jQuery(this).find('.portfolio-item-marketing[data-type~=' + $filterA + ']') || jQuery(this).find('.portfolio-item-marketing[data-type~=' + $filterB + ']'); } if ( $filterA != 'all' && $filterB == 'all' ) { return jQuery(this+'[data-type~='+$filterA+']') ; } if ( $filterA == 'all' && $filterB != 'all' ) { return jQuery(this).find('.portfolio-item-marketing[data-type~=' + $filterB + ']'); } if ( $filterA == 'all' && $filterB == 'all' ) { return jQuery(this).find('.portfolio-item-marketing'); } }); As you see in the code i tried 2 different methods ( First "if" and second "if" ). Im not sure if i can use find inside a filter but i also dont know how to get the attribute from the jQuery object. I can not use jQuery(this).attr('data-type') == $filterA Because the attribute maybe contain various filters .Thats why im trying to use jQuery "~=" Should i give up and end using a indexOf ?

  • JavaScript - Settting property on Object in Image load function, property not set once outside funct

    - by Sunday Ironfoot
    Sometimes JavaScript doesn't make sense to me, consider the following code that generates a photo mosaic based on x/y tiles. I'm trying to set a .Done property to true once each Mosaic image has been downloaded, but it's always false for some reason, what am I doing wrong? var tileData = []; function generate() { var image = new Image(); image.onload = function() { // Build up the 'tileData' array with tile objects from this Image for (var i = 0; i < tileData.length; i++) { var tile = tileData[i]; var tileImage = new Image(); tileImage.onload = function() { // Do something with this tile Image tile.Done = true; }; tileImage.src = tile.ImageUrl; } }; image.src = 'Penguins.jpg'; tryDisplayMosaic(); } function tryDisplayMosaic() { setTimeout(function() { for (var i = 0; i < tileData.length; i++) { var tile = tileData[i]; if (!tile.Done) { tryDisplayMosaic(); return; } } // If we get here then all the tiles have been downloaded alert('All images downloaded'); }, 2000); } Now for some reason the .Done property on the tile object is always false, even though it is explicitly being set to true inside tileImage.onload = function(). And I can ensure you that this function DOES get called because I've placed an alert() call inside it. Right now it's just stuck inside an infinite loop calling tryDisplayMosaic() constantly. Also if I place a loop just before tryDisplayMosaic() is called, and in that loop I set .Done = true, then .Done property is true and alert('All images downloaded'); will get called.

  • Cannot create list in SharePoint 2010 using Client Object Model

    - by Boris
    I am trying to utilize SharePoint 2010 Client Object Model to create a List based on a custom template. Here's my code: public void MakeList(string title, string listTemplateGUID, int localeIdentifier) { string message; string listUrl; List newList; Guid template; ListCreationInformation listInfo; Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ListCollection lists; try { listUrl = title.Replace(spaceChar, string.Empty); template = GetListTemplate((uint)localeIdentifier, listTemplateGUID); listInfo = new ListCreationInformation(); listInfo.Url = listUrl; listInfo.Title = title; listInfo.Description = string.Empty; listInfo.TemplateFeatureId = template; listInfo.QuickLaunchOption = QuickLaunchOptions.On; clientContext.Load(site); clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); lists = site.Lists; clientContext.Load(lists); clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); newList = lists.Add(listInfo); clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); } catch (ServerException ex) { //... } } Now, this particular part, newList = lists.Add(listInfo); clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); the one that is supposed to create the actual list, throws an exception: Message: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. ServerErrorCode: 2130239231 ServerErrorTypeName: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException Could anyone please help me realize what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  • Working with a large data object between ruby processes

    - by Gdeglin
    I have a Ruby hash that reaches approximately 10 megabytes if written to a file using Marshal.dump. After gzip compression it is approximately 500 kilobytes. Iterating through and altering this hash is very fast in ruby (fractions of a millisecond). Even copying it is extremely fast. The problem is that I need to share the data in this hash between Ruby on Rails processes. In order to do this using the Rails cache (file_store or memcached) I need to Marshal.dump the file first, however this incurs a 1000 millisecond delay when serializing the file and a 400 millisecond delay when serializing it. Ideally I would want to be able to save and load this hash from each process in under 100 milliseconds. One idea is to spawn a new Ruby process to hold this hash that provides an API to the other processes to modify or process the data within it, but I want to avoid doing this unless I'm certain that there are no other ways to share this object quickly. Is there a way I can more directly share this hash between processes without needing to serialize or deserialize it? Here is the code I'm using to generate a hash similar to the one I'm working with: @a = [] 0.upto(500) do |r| @a[r] = [] 0.upto(10_000) do |c| if rand(10) == 0 @a[r][c] = 1 # 10% chance of being 1 else @a[r][c] = 0 end end end @c = Marshal.dump(@a) # 1000 milliseconds Marshal.load(@c) # 400 milliseconds Update: Since my original question did not receive many responses, I'm assuming there's no solution as easy as I would have hoped. Presently I'm considering two options: Create a Sinatra application to store this hash with an API to modify/access it. Create a C application to do the same as #1, but a lot faster. The scope of my problem has increased such that the hash may be larger than my original example. So #2 may be necessary. But I have no idea where to start in terms of writing a C application that exposes an appropriate API. A good walkthrough through how best to implement #1 or #2 may receive best answer credit.
