    I always wondered why Microsoft chose such a strange, search-engine-unfriendly name for such a great platform. Couldn't they have come up with something better? Apparently the codename was NGWS: Microsoft started development on the .NET Framework in the late 1990s originally under the name of Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS). [Wikipedia] Does anyone know why they chose the name .NET?

  • Does the DMA Buffer Size should be same as UART FIFO size?

    I have written a driver for a UART in omap4460 panda board running on Linux platform.I have enabled DMA in FIFO mode in UART.My user application transfers 100 bytes of data from user space to kernel buffer(DMA buffer). As soon as the DMA channel is enabled, data from DMA buffer is copied to FIFO which is then transmitted to TSR of UART.Since my FIFO size is 64bytes,only 64 bytes is transmitted to TSR. What should I do to transfer remaining bytes from DMA buffer to FIFO?/ IS there any overflow occuring?

    Is it possible to detect all the hotkeys registered by the OS as well as software applications currently running? Any native or managed approach on the Windows platform? I know that the RegisterHotKey function returns false if the hotkey is already registered, but what I am looking for is an approach, method, etc. that will give me a list of registered hotkeys. Looping all possible combinations with RegisterHotKey does not sound like a good idea. Anything more efficient?

I have application that encrypts images on SD card and after I do that MediaScanner goes wild in LogCat (writing out "not JPEG" exception... and there are time I have over 1000 pics in directory).   • Advantages/disadvantages of Glassfish v3 Prelude vs Springsource dm server for Web applications?

    Both of these appservers are at least in part OSGI based. One (Glassfish) is obviously J2EE while the other isn't. Now I'm at the stage of choosing a platform for a new project and the natural choice is Glassfish v3 Prelude. This does raise the issue of perhaps we should be using S2AP instead. The question then is this: does the springsource dm server offer any compelling reason to use it over Glassfish? And vice versa.

I'd like to write ones that go from UTF-16 to UTF-8, which go from UTF-16 to the systems current code page (windows, so CP_ACP), and to the system's OEM codepage (windows, so CP_OEM). Cross-platform is preferred, but MSVC on Windows is fine too. Are there any kinds of tutorials or anything of that nature on how to correctly use this class?

I wanted to know how can I disable hardware rendering, or at least making it more capable.   • Converting float values from big endian to little endian

    Is it possible to convert floats from big to little endian? I have a value from a PowerPC(big endian)platform that I am send via TCP to a Windows process (little endian). This value is a float, but when I "memcpy" the value into a win32 float type and then call _byteswap_ulongon that value, I always get 0.0000? What am I doing wrong?

Any recommendations? apparently there briefly used to be a Euro OSCON (2004-2006? what happened?) some good language/app-specific ones like EuroPython, EuroSciPy, DjangoCon European BarCamps seem kind of fragmented, esp. for an English-speaking audience anything bigger or better? If there isn't anything, I wonder if O'Reilly would resurrect Euro OSCON.

  • Replacing all disks in a non-OS RAID 5 volume

    Hi all, We currently have a server with 8 x HDD slots. It is a HP DL380G5 with a P400 controller. 2 x HDD are in a RAID 1+0 config and this hosts the OS. 6 x HDD are in a RAID 5 config and holds an Oracle DB. Basically the RAID 5 volume is running out of space and we would like to swap all 6 with higher capacity disks. Excuse my ignorance as I am pretty new to this... I believe we will need to backup the data, delete the RAID volume, insert the new disks, recreate the volume, and restore the data. 2 questions: Do we need to worry about the OS partition or is it completely independent so we can simply take out the 6 and insert 6 new disks and get the controller to recognize the 6 new disks and form a new RAID 5 volume? We should not need to reinstall OS or Oracle correct? Since we are going to restore the data on the volume from another source (our vendor will take care of this) but we would like to keep the existing data on the 6 disks just in case we run into issues and want to fall back, is this possible?
