• WmiPrvSE memory leak on Windows 2008 *R2*

  I've seen references on Windows 2008 to WmiPrvSE leaks, but nothing about Windows 2008 R2. We're running R2 on top of Hyper-V (2008). We are also running NSClient++ for monitoring from opsview. Over time, WmiPrvSE.exe starts to use a lot of memory, causing memory alert issues (less than 10% free). VM has 2GB, WmiPrvSE consumes up to 500-600MB before I kill it. Killing the process doesn't seem to have any negative effect; it starts up again and I haven't noticed any problems. But after a day or two, it's back in the same situation. Any ideas on what to do? Resource Monitor doesn't show any Disk or Network IO by WmiPrvSE.exe. Just slowly climbing private memory... Edited to add: We aren't running clustering, or Windows System Resource Manager. The only regular WMI user I can guess is NSClient++, but we don't seem to have this problem on other servers.

• SQL Server 2008 Cluster Installation - First network name always fails

  I'm testing failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 to host a SQL Server 2008 installation using this installation guide. My base cluster is installed and working properly, as well as clustering the DTC service. However, when it comes time to install SQL Server, my first attempt at installation always fails with the same message and seems to "taint" the network name. For example, with my previous cluster attempt, I was installing SQL Server as VSQL. After approximately 15 attempts of installation and trying to resolve the errors, e.g. changing domain accounts for SQL, setting SPNs, etc., I typoed the network name as VQSL and the installation worked. Similarly on my current cluster, I tried installing with the SQL service named PROD-C1-DB and got the same errors as last time until I tried changing the name to anything else, e.g. PROD-C1-DB1, SQL, TEST, etc., at which point the install works. It will even install to VSQL now. While testing, my install routine was: Run setup.exe from patched media, selecting appropriate options After the install fails, I'd chose "Remove node from a SQL Server failover cluster" and remove the single, failed, node Attempt to diagnose problem, inspect event logs, etc. Delete the computer account that was created for the SQL Service from Active Directory Delete the MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER folder from the shared data drive The error message I receive from the SQL Server installer is: The following error has occurred: The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F) Along with hundreds of the following errors in the Application event log: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 28000; native error = 4818; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. • SBS 2008 BPA Warnings After Migration From SBS 2003

  We just finished a we-know-just-enough-to-be-dangerous migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008, and things seem to have gone relatively smoothly. After running the SBS 2008 Best Practices Analyzer on the destination server, we've got three warning messages, and I can't tell if they're important or not. First, the easy one: SMTP Port (TCP 25 Status): The Edgetransport.exe process should listen on SMTP port 25, but that port is owned by the process. I don't think that this one is a big deal--e-mail is flowing through the SMTP connector. Since there are two spaces between "the" and "process," I'm assuming that for some reason BPA just couldn't figure out the owning process name and this is just some sloppy programming when displaying the message. (Indeed, on subsequent runs of the BPA this message goes away, and other times it comes back.) Now, two more scary sounding ones: No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs sub-domain in the forward lookup zone for Windows SBS 2008. and, similarly, No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs zone for Windows SBS 2008. Now for these two, everything appears to be functioning correctly--but I'm assuming this is a weird state as a result of the SBS 2003 to 2008 migration. Can anyone provide any pointers on how to fix it, or whether or not it can be safely ignored? Thanks!

  EDIT: I did get a little further but all posts on my search say permissions are wrong or regenerate key but I fixed that to be 644 as well as owned by DKIM AND I keep regenerating the key but it is not helping. Since I see opendkim running under user opendkim, I changed the owner of /etc/opendkim/* and /etc/opendkim and /etc/opendkim.conf all to opendkim user. I am running on ubuntu. • Overheating computer

  My computer overheats somewhat frequently, usually during intense use. And by intense use I mean browsing the internet while downloading, or gaming. It even overheats on extremely old games though, Master of Orion 2, which was developed for Windows 95. My computer has a Pentium 4 Ghz processor, 2 GB of ram, and is running Windows XP. One of the symptoms it has after overheating, is that it'll turn on immediately afterwards, but won't show any video on my monitor. I usually have to wait at least 5 minutes (mostly at least 10) before I can get it to turn on and show video on my monitor. I also usually have to wiggle around the graphics card a little bit, which is the ASUS A9550 Series with 256 MB. I'm not sure exactly what is causing the computer to overheat. At first I thought it was the video card, but after I noticed it was doing it while playing Master of Orion 2, I'm not so sure, because that game can't be making the video card work all that hard. So how exactly can I pinpoint the problem? Thanks for any help provided. Edit: Okay I downloaded the programs that you specified, and will start benchmarking my system to try and pinpoint what's overheating. What is the temperature range for when it's getting to hot? Also I have an abundant amount of software experience with computers, but unfortunately not to much hardware experience.

• Asus P5Q doesn't post at all

  I had a very strange incident this evening. I was watching TV on the computer and suddenly the sound stutter. Some seconds later, the screen went black. First I thought ok some error, don't worry. Since the computer didn't react on any input from the mouse or keyboard, I shutted it down by pressing the power button. I tried to reboot but the monitor rest black. All the fans were running, the MB didn't made a beep and the leds are all green as they have to be. The HDD is running too, also the monitor is on. But nothing happens, not even a single message on the screen, just black. Here are the things I already tried with no success: tried to boot with 1 of two rams (each tested alone) turned off all power (pull th plug) for 10 minutes tested the graphic card with another pc. there it worked. tested the RAM with another pc. there it worked. Any hints what to do next?

  Using CentOs, I want to run a script as user 'training' as a system service. I use daemontools to monitor the process, which needs a launcher script that is run as root and has no tty standard in. Below I give my four different attempts which all fail. : #!/bin/bash exec >> /var/log/training_service.log 2>&1 setuidgid training training_command This last line is not good enough since for training_command, we need environment for trqaining user to be set. : su - training -c 'training_command' This looks like it (http://serverfault.com/questions/44400/run-a-shell-script-as-a-different-user) but gives 'standard in must be tty' as su making sure tty is present to potentially accept password. I know I could make this disappear by modifying /etc/sudoers (a la http://superuser.com/questions/119376/bash-su-script-giving-an-error-standard-in-must-be-a-tty) but i am reluctant and unsure of consequences. : runuser - training -c 'training_command' This one gives runuser: cannot set groups: Connection refused. I found no sense or resolution to this error. : ssh -p100 training@localhost 'source $HOME/.bashrc; training_command' This one is more of a joke to show desparation. Even this one fails with Host key verification failed. (the host key IS in known_hosts, etc). Note: all of 2,3,4 work as they should if I run the wrapper script from a root shell. problems only occur if the system service monitor (daemontools) launches it (no tty terminal I guess). I am stuck. Is this something so hard to achieve? I appreciate all insight and guidance to best practice. • mdadm cron job sends email that cron has run

  I've got an Ubuntu 8.04 server using mdadm to create several RAID1 arrays. • Jetty - 401 Unauthorized when using basic authentication

  I am running SOLR on jetty in Ubuntu (a bitnami VM, if that helps) and am trying to lock down access to both the admin pages and the update/delete/etc. pages using basic authentication. When I attempt to connect to the admin console via a web browser I am prompted for a user name and password, but the username and password I use simply does not work. For test purposes I am using foo:bar as the credentials, but I receive a '401 Unauthorized' response. • Nagios plug-in check_snmp receives NO SNMP data from a CISCO Router

  I have tried setting up Nagios on Ubuntu 10.10, successfully installed and can login to web interface, I am however stuck on configuring snmp or I am doing something wrong here, i have followed various sites / nagios wiki to setup configuration (cfg) files. When I check on the web interface, it gives the following error on one of my cisco router: Current Status: UNKNOWN (for 0d 2h 55m 56s) Status Information: SNMP problem - No data received from host CMD: /usr/bin/snmpget -t 1 -r 5 -m RFC1213-MIB -v 1 [authpriv] 192.168.1.1:161 ifOperStatus.1 On the command-line itself, when I type the following, it just sits there waiting and waiting : sudo /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_snmp -H 192.168.1.1 -C Routers -o sysUpTime.0 When I type the following command : I get an OK /usr/bin/snmpget -v1 192.168.1.1:161 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0 -c "Routers" I have configured SNMP properly on our cisco device as we can collect SNMP Data via two other monitoring tool (SolarWinds and Manage Engine), we are tempted towards Nagios as its opensource. Will be grateful if someone could assist in rectifying this situation and guide me with setting up nagios to monitor Cisco Routers, Switches and a Few Servers. • Kate gives out debug messages on the console from which it is started

  I am new to Linux. I use Ubuntu 11.04. Whenever I open a file with kate from the commandline, with 'kate &' (or without ampersand), Kate starts out giving messages on the console. It continuously gives them out as I save a file or close one. They look like debug messages to me (sample below). I have used Synaptic package manager to install Kate. Uninstalling and installing the dev version did not make any change. Soon my console becomes cluttered. Is there a way to suppress these messages? There was nothing explicit in Kate settings either. • MS SQL Server slows down over time?

  Have any of you experienced the following, and have you found a solution: A large part of our website's back-end is MS SQL Server 2005. Every week or two weeks the site begins running slower - and I see queries taking longer and longer to complete in SQL. I have a query that I like to use: USE master select text,wait_time,blocking_session_id AS "Block", percent_complete, * from sys.dm_exec_requests CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle) AS s2 order by start_time asc Which is fairly useful... it gives a snapshot of everything that's running right at that moment against your SQL server. What's nice is that even if your CPU is pegged at 100% for some reason and Activity Monitor is refusing to load (I'm sure some of you have been there) this query still returns and you can see what query is killing your DB. When I run this, or Activity Monitor during the times that SQL has begun to slow down I don't see any specific queries causing the issue - they are ALL running slower across the board. If I restart the MS SQL Service then everything is fine, it speeds right up - for a week or two until it happens again. Nothing that I can think of has changed, but this just started a few months ago... Ideas? --Added Please note that when this database slowdown happens it doesn't matter if we are getting 100K page views an hour (busier time of day) or 10K page views an hour (slow time) the queries all take a longer time to complete than normal. The server isn't really under stress - the CPU isn't high, the disk usage doesn't seem to be out of control... it feels like index fragmentation or something of the sort but that doesn't seem to be the case. As far as pasting results of the query I pasted above I really can't do that. The Query above lists the login of the user performing the task, the entire query, etc etc.. and I'd really not like to hand out the names of my databases, tables, columns and the logins online :)... I can tell you that the queries running at that time are normal, standard queries for our site that run all the time, nothing out of the norm.

• Ballooning Mac OS X kernel_task and Wired memory usage. How to diagnose / fix?

  I have a very strange issue, which I'm having a hard time diagnosing as to the root cause. I have a Mac Pro (2008, 8-core 2.8 GHz, 8800GT) with 14 GB of RAM (recently upgraded because of this issue!). When I boot my system and log in, vm_stat / top / Activity Monitor will show that kernel_task has about 150 MB allocated, and the machine has about 800 MB of Wired memory being allocated. Even initially, 800 MB seems an awful lot of wired memory to be allocated with no applications running - but, it gets worse. (NB: Wired is locked, unswappable memory) After a very short time, sometimes triggered by something as simple as launching a terminal, kernel_task will balloon to 8-900 MB of Real Mem (RSIZE), and Wired Memory will accelerate to 1.6 GB (implying that all the extra memory requests are for wired RAM in the kernel). If I quit everything (I.E: no running applications, bar an activity monitor or terminal to view top), there is no appreciable reduction in either kernel_task RSIZE, or Wired Memory usage. Going the opposite way, and loading the system with tasks also shows that wired memory does not get reduced - and that importantly it is not reduced in preference to heavy swapping. If I log out and log back in again, it reduces a bit (450 MB kernel_task, 1.28 GB Wired), but not back to the start. I'm not running any wacky kexts - and futhermore, kextstat shows no huge memory allocations there; the largest being com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal at about 4 MB of Memory. The machine feels overall more sluggish when this has happened - unsurprisingly because such a huge amount of RAM has been marked as non-pageable. So I have a few questions: 1) Is there a good way to diagnose what has allocated all of this wired memory? It's often over 2 times the kernel_task size, running no applications. The real memory total doesn't seem to add up - it seems that there is a bunch of RAM that isn't being accounted for anywhere. 2) What is happening to cause the kernel to suddenly require 6 times as much memory?

• Outlook slow to open attachments

  When a colleague tries to open attachments in her email (Outlook 2003 talking to an Exchange 2007 server) they talk ages to open. The files are relatively small, all less than 1MB. We've tried creating a new Windows profile for the user and tried creating new Outlook profiles, however that hasn't made any difference. And we've tried accessing her account from someone else's PC, and the attachments open immediately there. The only thing that might provide a clue is that Process Monitor shows Outlook on her PC trying to write the file to a folder within the user's "Temporary Internet Files" folder with FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors. Can't find a lot of useful information on that message online though. What causes the FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors? And would that make opening attachments so incredibly slow that opening a < 1MB file can take a matter of minutes? UPDATE: Discovered that this isn't just an issue with Outlook. Other files being accessed over the network show the same FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors in Process Monitor. The problem is just more noticeable with Outlook, because although other applications take a while to open files it isn't a matter of minutes.

• Dual VGA monitors with Quadro FX 580?

  I have a machine with a Quadro FX 580 card (DVI and two Displayport). Attached to it are two 19" Acer screens, which are both (annoyingly) VGA. The first one works perfectly, with a DVI-VGA adaptor. The second one doesn't work. It's got a VGA cable, which goes into a VGA-DVI converted, which then goes into a DVI-Displayport converter. Initally, I was getting 'Cable Unplugged' on the screen, and it couldn't be seen by Windows or the nVidia control panel. After swapping the VGA-DVI adaptor (which works perfectly on another machine), Windows can now see the monitor. The nVidia panel sees the model and native resolution, but I get a constant 'No Signal' error. Switching to the other Displayport makes no difference. I suspect that the card is seeing a DVI connection plugged into it (nVididaCP shows the monitor as having a DVI connection), and it only sending out a digital signal because of this. Does anyone know of a solution (other than trying to get a Displayport-VGA adaptor), or of a way to force the card to see it as VGA? Thanks, ~Dentrasi

  Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

  I have recently bought Philips SHB6110. Extract from the 13th page of manual: Therefore you can connect your Bluetooth stereo headset. with a Bluetooth stereo enabled phone to both listen to music and lead calls, or with a Bluetooth phone that does not support Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) to lead calls and at the same time to a Bluetooth audio device (Bluetooth enabled MP3 player, Bluetooth audio adapter etc.) to listen to music. Make sure to pair the phone first with your Bluetooth headset, then turn both the phone and headset off to then pair the Bluetooth audio device. With the SwitchStream feature you can listen to music and monitor your calls at the same time. Even while listening to music, you will hear a ring tone when receiving a call and can switch to the call simply by tapping the button. The manual however doesn't specify how do I connect to both device at the same time. I use Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG laptop with Belkin Mini Bluetooth Adapter and Nokia N95 phone. Operating system is Windows 7 64-bit and I have Skype installed. Both phone and compute can be used for listening to music and talking on the phone (on PC via Skype). Best solution would be if I could connect to PC and phone as the same time and monitor calls both mobile and Skype calls while listening music from Winamp. If that is not possible, then I would like at least to be able to listen music from PC, while monitoring calls from mobile. So, please tell me how do I connect both PC and phone to headphones?
