• Good Guide For Web App Security?

  Hello! I am pretty good on making web applications and I know how to transfer data to and from client/server, etc. I need some help though learning how to make the data exchanges more secure. That is the reason why I feel kind of scared to publish any web app I make. I wanted to know what are some good guides to help you understand and learn how to secure data transfer with your web application? Things like better authentication for example and making better logins. You can post any suggestion, but just for your information, I mainly code my web apps with Javascript and PHP. Also, I transfer my data using JSON or XML. Thanks a lot

  I'm used to use web deployment projects. Currently I am developing a new web application with VS2010 and want to try to get along with the new web.config principle and deployment issues. How can I replace a simple setting like <applicationSettings> <NAMESPACE> <setting name="Testenvironment" serializeAs="String"> <value>True</value> </setting> </NAMESPACE> </applicationSettings> I want to have this setting to be set to True in Debug, and false in Release. How must the entries in the Web.Debug.config and Web.Release.Config look like? And by the way: Is there some documentation about the new web.config issue? Can't seem to google for the correct keywords.

• Facebook canvas app ASP.NET MVC HttpException: Invalid Model

  I am working on a Facebook tab application. I am using asp.net MVC 2 with the "official" Microsoft Facebook SDK. Most of my views are working just fine. However, I have one that is causing a huge mess. I am simply returning a List<Tags> to the view and as my ViewModel. This problematic view is simply displaying the list in a foreach loop. Whenever navigate to this view I get a "System.Web.HttpException: Invalid Model" exception. The most puzzling part of all this is that the same code is running without fail on our regular(non-Facebook) app that works just fine with the same code. Any insight into why Facebook and asp.net MVC 2 would be causing this behavior would be much appreciated.

• Restart IIS7 webapp for debug in VS2008

  I'm developing an ASP.NET asyc generic handler which uses a static System.Threading.Timer instance to feed data to the response output stream while the context is in the asynchronous phase. I'm having issues at startup that I'd like to debug. Currently, because of the long-lived nature of the timer, I'm manually killing w3wp.exe in order to cause the application to restart. I'm aware that there are other ways to do this, but this is the best workflow I can find! Isn't there a way to force a cold start when I hit f5, instead of the standard VS approach of attaching to the existing IIS process?

• How to stop the Bottle webserver when started from subprocess

  Hello all, I would like to embed the great Bottle web framework into a small application (1st target is Windows OS). This app starts the bottle webserver thanks to the subprocess module. import subprocess p = subprocess.Popen('python websrv.py') The bottle app is quite simple @route("/") def index(): return template('index') run(reloader=True) It starts the default webserver into a Windows console. All seems Ok except the fact that I must press Ctrl-C to close the bottle webserver. I would like that the master app terminates the webserver when it shutdowns. I can't find a way to do that (p.terminate() doesn't work in this case unfortunately) Any idea? Thanks in advance

• Trying to run psexec to remote to server and recycle app pool

  If I run this from my command prompt it works fine. psexec \ServerName cscript.exe iisapp.vbs /a AppName /r I'm trying to do the same thing with C# console app. I'm using the below code but most of the time the application hangs and doesn't complete, and the few times it does it throws an error code. Am I doing this wrong?   Hello, I have a website which generates hourly updates to users. I want to allow these updates to show up as News feeds in Facebok. I opened a Facebook Connect application. Through my site I receive the extended persmission to post news to the users' news feeds. My question is can I automatically post news feeds to these users without them being logged in to my site? But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

That's some code I want to execute once and after that process has finished. Do or don't SPSite and SPWeb's remain opened somwhere? Why i`m asking this? I just don't want to stress when using something like var lists = from web in site.AllWebs.Cast<SPWeb>() where web is meeting workspace && list is task list select list then do some stuff on lists etc. Some serious resource leak there because webs get opened, filtered and NOT closed. So should I worry in console app?

My Website is in Java's [Google Web Toolkit] Framework 2.0.1 When we press FB-connect connect then FB's Login window comes, after that user enters email & pwd. When user clicks FB's connect button then Our website display in that Login window. Authentication and Connect Url is Proper http://localhost:8090/websitename/ How to solve this problem ? Where I did mistake ? Is there any solution? When I did same thing in GWT's development/Hosted mode with Authentication and Connect url http:/127.0.0.1:8888/ then works properly. Then why It create Probelm in localhost? :-/

• Is it faster to do the pages first and CSS second, or should I do them at the same time?

  I have been tasked with building a new web project from scratch, with the exception of reusing CSS files (the look and feel) from an existing project. In the past I have always completed development of the functionality and the web-ui before considering the appearance. This is mostly due to CSS development overlapping with the tail end of the project. I now have the opportunity to integrate a static set of CSS as I build the application. I have no experience with this circumstance. Would it be faster to develop the project and web-pages first, then integrate the CSS; or would it be faster to integrate the CSS as part of page development?

• PHP: Facebook stream.publish and outdated template bundles?

  Ok So I haven't tried messing with the facebook PHP API for months.. it's gross. Since template bundles are apparently now defunct, how can I publish a story into my users news feed for their friends? I've also already requested permissions. Edit: The issue seems to arise from requested permissions not being set for the user when They are granted.   I'm trying to write a program that can stop and start services using SilverLight 3 and VS2010. I can't add the reference to the System.ServiceProcess dll. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.ServiceProcess.dll 1st why? - It it just a security precaution? 2- Is there a work around? Does SilverLight have a different library that I can use to start and stop services. Also note that this is a desktop application and not a web app. It will be sitting on my desktop to toggle services on and off.

  I want to be able to maintain certain objects between application restarts. To do that, I want to write specific cached items out to disk in Global.asax Application_End() function and re-load them back on Application_Start(). I currently have a cache helper class, which uses the following method to return the cached value: return HttpContext.Current.Cache[key]; Problem: during Application_End(), HttpContext.Current is null since there is no web request (it's an automated cleanup procedure) - therefore, I cannot access .Cache[] to retrieve any of the items to save to disk. Question: how can I access the cache items during Application_End()?

  I am trying to use the WINAPI ReadConsole() to wait for any keypress at the end of my Win32 console application. However, when the ReadConsole() function executes the error code ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE (0x06) is flagged. I have verified hConsole_c to be a valid handle. Does anyone have any insight as to what I am doing wrongly? I am using Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. Thanks.

• Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

• Rails: Settingslogic accessible to users?

  I have my app configured with Settingslogic, which I love. My question is how to I make a page on my Rails app where Administrators can make changes to the settings specified in config/settings.yml?? I assume said page would have to read and display appropriate form fields for all the values in the YAML file, then save those values back to config/settings.yml? • GCC: visibility of symbols in standalone C++ applications

  Hi, Because of a strange C++ warning about the visibility of some symbols and an interesting answer, linking to a paper which describes the different visibility types and cases (section 2.2.4 is about C++ classes), I started to wonder if it is needed for a standalone application to export symbols at all (except main - or is that needed?). Why exactly are they needed to be exported in standalone applications? Is "an exported symbol" an synomym for "visible symbol"? I.e. a hidden symbol is a symbol which is not exported? Do the object files already differ between visible symbols and hidden symbols? Or is this made at the linking step, so that only the visible symbols are exported? Does the visibility of symbols matter in case for debug information? Or is that completely independent, i.e. I would also get a nice backtrace if I have all symbols hidden? How is STABS/DWARF related to the visibility of symbols?
