• IRC Server configuration possibilities

  I need to know a couple of things, concerning IRC servers that I couldnt directly find out over google (or werent clear enough for me to be sure if it actually works) I'm working at a larger community site, and wanted to deliver an in-page chat. Since it would be a nice feature to let people access it from outside too, over their own clients, I tought implementing an IRC Server would be the best solution (probably dedicated, I'll have to teach myself a couple of things for that) I plan to include a Web-based IRC client over an APE Client / Server. The problem is, I want to strip down the user rights, to disallow many functionalities that IRC would offer: Change of nicknames: The user logs in over the Page login, and I'll automatically create an IRC auth for this user with that password. So basically, he would connect to the IRC client over a button. And after connecting, he shouldnt be able to change his nickname at all Creating channels: I want the possibility to create channels, but not from 'normal' users. Basically, I would prefer to set up basic channels that are public, and if a user really creates an own channel, that one should be private and via invitation (is that possible?) Private conversations: private conversations should be filtered out from the allaround IRC client, into separate 'in-browser-windows' that I create over JS. I guess I just have to filter the stuff coming from IRC - or is there a better solution to that? Only 'registered' users have access: Like I said, if someone registers on the page, I would like to create an IRC 'account' for him. Users that arent registered on the page, cant access the IRC server at all (or get thrown out). Mainly to avoid spammers or bots from outside. Is this stuff solvable over IRC? I've read some FAQ's and Instructions for IRC OP's and servers, but I couldnt find a clear answer - it seems that everyone can do pretty much everything - I would like to configure it in a way that user possibilities are more cut down. Basically, giving users the possibility to chat, but not more. So the Question basically is, how possible / solvable this issues are allaround, or if I have to find other solutions for this.

• Good fractal visualizer

  Each time it's the same thing, I find one, then I forget the name of it the next time I want to "dive" into such things. I'm looking for a good fractal "visualizer". The kind in which you just select a well-known fractal model (or variations on it), and in which you can then "dive" into, just zooming in or out smoothly, for the cheer pleasure of losing yourself in it. I'm looking for an executable, preferably for Windows, but any OS accepted. Keep to one program per answer (and one answer per program), as this is community wiki.

• Apache rewrite rules redux

  I've got a REST framework that when plopped into any directory should Just Work(TM), and it seems to work fine when I've got projects in subdirectories, but not if it's in root. So, given a few example directories; / /project1 /bingo/project2 /hoopla/doopla/minor/project3 All of these works fine, except I'm getting "funnies"* when the project runs in the root directory (bit hard to explain, I suppose, but the second level rewrites are not working properly). Here's my attempt at a generic .htaccess file: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^static/ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^$ RewriteRule .* ./ [R,L] RewriteRule ^index.php - [L] RewriteRule (.*) index.php?q=$1 [QSA,PT] (And yes, all projects have a subdirectory ./static which is ignored by rewrites) What I'm trying to achieve is a set of rewrite rules that work for most cases (which is, again, plonking the project in a directory the webserver serves). I'm not a rewrite rules wiz by a long shot, and any good advice and gotchas would be appreciated (and yes, I've gone through too many introductory articles. I need some serious juice.) More info on the funnies; my webserver has docroot in one spot (under /usr/share/apache2/default-site/), but a set of rules that says that /projects is pulled in from somewhere else that's not a subdirectory of docroot (/home/user/Projects/). When I go there, I get a list of /projects subdirectories, and if one of those subdirectories gets called (restmapp) with the proposed rewrite rules, I get ; The requested URL /home/user/Projects/restmapp/index.php was not found on this server.

• Graph limitations - Should I use Decorator?

  I have a functional AdjacencyListGraph class that adheres to a defined interface GraphStructure. In order to layer limitations on this (eg. acyclic, non-null, unique vertex data etc.), I can see two possible routes, each making use of the GraphStructure interface: Create a single class ("ControlledGraph") that has a set of bitflags specifying various possible limitations. Handle all limitations in this class. Update the class if new limitation requirements become apparent. Use the decorator pattern (DI, essentially) to create a separate class implementation for each individual limitation that a client class may wish to use. The benefit here is that we are adhering to the Single Responsibility Principle. I would lean toward the latter, but by Jove!, I hate the decorator Pattern. It is the epitome of clutter, IMO. Truthfully it all depends on how many decorators might be applied in the worst case -- in mine so far, the count is seven (the number of discrete limitations I've recognised at this stage). The other problem with decorator is that I'm going to have to do interface method wrapping in every... single... decorator class. Bah. Which would you go for, if either? Or, if you can suggest some more elegant solution, that would be welcome. EDIT: It occurs to me that using the proposed ControlledGraph class with the strategy pattern may help here... some sort of template method / functors setup, with individual bits applying separate controls in the various graph-canonical interface methods. Or am I losing the plot?

• CentOS and Snapshots

  I'm planning on purchasing a virtual-dedicated server today and would like to pass a quick question by the community here before I do. I'm likely going to be getting CentOS, as that seems to be a pretty stable, and popular distro from what I can tell. One of the companies I contacted (MediaTemple) mentioned they provide snapshots just incase I start doing something that could potentially cripple my server - I could always restore the last snapshot. Another company (GoDaddy) said they would provide routine snapshots once a day, week, or month and back it up to a remote FTP for me to download. My question is this, is the "snapshot" capability provided in the OS itself? I'm not super-confident in my abilities yet to manage a server, so this functionality would be very attractive. Or, do I need to pick a host that provides this as an extra addon to the already rendered services?

• Name Servers changed over 48 hrs ago and site is still down

  Ok, I just recently changed Name Servers for my site (Oct. 29th): http://dream-portal.net but there is an issue, the name servers were changed from godaddy, however, the DNS is being hosted elsewhere. Godaddy states that the DNS is resolving the site to www.dream-portal.net and that is making it inaccessible from the DNS on the other host and that they can't do anything because I'm not hosting DNS with godaddy. I've contacted the other host and they say that everything is fine, however, people are not able to access the site and I can't access it from my work computer. I can only access it from my home computer. From my work computer it says that the page can not be found. What should I do? What can I do? • Extend base type and automatically update audit information on Entity

  I have an entity model that has audit information on every table (50+ tables) CreateDate CreateUser UpdateDate UpdateUser Currently we are programatically updating audit information. Ex: if(changed){ entity.UpdatedOn = DateTime.Now; entity.UpdatedBy = Environment.UserName; context.SaveChanges(); } But I am looking for a more automated solution. During save changes, if an entity is created/updated I would like to automatically update these fields before sending them to the database for storage. Any suggestion on how i could do this? I would prefer to not do any reflection, so using a text template is not out of the question. A solution has been proposed to override SaveChanges and do it there, but in order to achieve this i would either have to use reflection (in which I don't want to do ) or derive a base class. Assuming i go down this route how would I achieve this? • Snow Leopard: MySQL doesn't start

  Hi, I have updated to Snow Leopard and I removed mysql by following this post: http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,75256,255853#msg-255853 After that I have installed the mysql 64 bit community edition, but using the prefpane MySQL doesn't start. • Verizon HTC Eris - No sound on incoming phone call after 2.1 droid upgrade. Help!?

  Has anyone had the following issue? I've had several issues as well: No sound when call connects, ringing or people talking. Apps would force close like weather. I did call HTC support and they had me go into Menu, Settings, Manage Applications and then clear the cache of the problem app. They also had me clear the cache once the browser was open and then do a soft reset (power off the phone and take the battery out for 15 seconds) This did fix some issues, but I am constantly turning my phone on and off to get sound back on call or to make the assigned ringtones work. There's no rhyme or reason as to why they stop working... Anyone else tried anything different??? Related problem statement... http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/32/p/2601/10344.aspx#10344 My wife and I are most concerned about the incoming call issue.

Attempted Solutions As I understand from this article and this discussion, the proper way to remove the error message is to ignore it via setting the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" propery to "true". I took the following steps: Logged into vCenter Right-clicked on my HA cluster and chose "Edit Settings..." Clicked "vSphere HA" section Clicked "Advanced Options..." I anticipate (or hope for at least) a significant amount of traffic/bandwidth in the not-too-distant future. If I open a reseller, will I receive the same amount of server lag during busy hours that I do with a shared account? How significant is the profit margin with the reseller option? • grub error: symbol 'grub_puts_' not found

  I updated from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, and after installation, the computer restarted. When grub loaded, all I get is a screen that says error: symbol 'grub_puts' not found and a useless grub prompt that looks like grub_rescue I've tried reinstalling grub from the livecd (usb drive) following this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows to no avail. Sometimes, when I start up from the live usb, linux doesn't recognize the harddrive at all. It's not in the places menu, nor does fdisk list anything. If anyone can help fix up grub so it recognizes and boots up the two os's I have installed, I'd appreciate it. Also, I know little about grub, so try and make it easy to understand.

• I need an abstract field !

  I know abstract fields do not exist in java. I also read this question but the solutions proposed won't solve my problem. Maybe there is no solution, but it's worth asking :) Problem I have an abstract class that does an operation in the constructor depending on the value of one of its fields. The problem is that the value of this field will change depending on the subclass. How can I do so that the operation is done on the value of the field redefined by the subclass ? If I just "override" the field in the subclass the operation is done on the value of the field in the abstract class. I'm open to any solution that would ensure that the operation will be done during the instantiation of the subclass (ie putting the operation in a method called by each subclass in the constructor is not a valid solution, because someone might extend the abstract class and forget to call the method). Also, I don't want to give the value of the field as an argument of the constructor. Is there any solution to do that, or should I just change my design ?

  The problem of finding the intersection/union of 'N' discs/circles on a flat plane was first proposed by M. I. Shamos in his 1978 thesis: Shamos, M. I. “Computational Geometry” Ph.D. thesis, Yale Univ., New Haven, CT 1978. Since then, in 1985, Micha Sharir presented an O(n log2n) time and O(n) space deterministic algorithm for the disc intersection/union problem (based on modified Voronoi diagrams): Sharir, M. • Android beginner: understanding MotionEvent actions

  I am having trouble getting my activity to return a MotionEvent.ACTION_UP. Probably a beginner's error. In LogCat, I'm only seeing the ACTION_MOVE event (which is an int value of 3). I also see the X/Y coordinates. No ACTION_DOWN and no ACTION_UP. I looked everywhere for a solution. • What is the current state of development for the FLAC codec?

  I have a pretty large collection of FLAC files created from my CD collection. I love the FLAC format and the sound quality that you can get from it. Lately, however, I've been trying to write a few tools to manipulate the files and I've been noticing what seems to be a stagnation of the community around the codec. Some of the links on the official FLAC page point to thing that are no longer relevant (7digital, for example, appears to no longer sell FLAC encoded songs). It's pretty hard to find hardware players that support FLAC any more (most noticeably it's not present on lower end players when it used to be, and playback is absent on Android). Programming language tools (Java and .NET libraries) are at best old, and at worst unfinished. What's the current state of FLAC development? Has it been replaced by another codec?

• How do I evaluate my skillset against the current market to see what needs improvement and where my

  First of all, this question may be out of bounds for this site. If so, remove it. I say this because this site seems to be a place for more concrete questions that are not so relative in nature. And before I begin, for those of you whom just prefer a question and not this sort of dialog, here is my question: How can I assess my current skills as a programmer and decide where and what areas to improve upon? That said, here's what I'm asking/talking about, in essence. The market is always in constant flux. As programmers we're always having to learn new things, update our skills, push ourselves into that next project. There's not a very good litmus test that I know of for us to get an idea of where we stand as programmers. I came across this blog post by Jeff Atwood talking about why can't programmers code. Instinctively (and as the post goes on to state) I rushed through the program in about 4 minutes (most of that time was b/c I was hand writing it out. Still, this doesn't really answer the question of where do my skills need to be to succeed in today's world. I real blogs, listen to podcasts, try to keep up on the latest things coming out. It has only been in the past couple of months that I made a decision to pick a focus area for my learning as I can't learn everything and trying to do so is to spread myself too thin. I chose ASP.NET MVC & C#. I plan to stick with Microsoft technologies, not out of some sense of loyalty or stubbornness, but rather because they seem to stream together and have a unifying connection between them. With Windows Phone 7 coming out, it seems that now is the obvious time to pick up WPF and Silverlight as well. Still, if you asked me to code something apart from intellisense and the internet, I probably couldn't get the syntax right. I don't have libraries memorized or know precisely where the classes I use exist within the .Net framework, namely because I haven't had to pull that knowledge out of the air. In a way, I suppose Visual Studio has insulated me, which isn't a good thing, but, at the same time, I've still been able to be productive. I'm working on my own side project to try and help my learning. In doing so, I'm trying to make use of best practices and 3rd party frameworks where I can. I'm using automapper and EF 1.0. I know everyone in the .net community seems to cry foul at the sound of EF 1.0, but I can't say why because I've never used it. There's no lazy loading and that has proven rather annoying; however, aside from that, I haven't had that much of an issue. Granted this is probably because I'm not writing tests as I go (which I'm not doing because I don't know how to test EF in tests and don't really have a clue how to write tests for ASP.NET MVC 1.0). I'm also using a custom membership provider; granted, it's a barebone implementation, but I'm using it still. My thinking in all of this is, while I am neglecting a great many important technologies that are in the mainstream, I'll have a working project in the end. I can come back and add those things after I finish. Doing it all now and at once seems like too much. I know how I work and I don't think I'd ever get it done that way. I've elected to make this a community wiki as I think this question might fight better there. If a moderator disagrees with that choice or the decision to post this here, the just delete the question. I'm not trying to make undue work for anyone. I'm just a programmer trying to assess my where his skills are now and where I should be improving.

• Server room kit?

  I feel like this is a question I've seen on here before, but some searching didn't do me any good. This looks similar, but I'm looking for stuff I leave there, not what's in my go-bag. What would you say is indispensable equipment in your server room? I've inherited one that's a bit light on stuff (except for servers, those are in there). We're in the single digits of racks, if that matters. I'm thinking of things like: Cable labeler Ethernet tester (copper at least, fibre if you need) ... ? Community wiki, because, really. [Edit] I suppose it's important to say that it's a colo facility, kind of far from the office. No food, water, etc. :(

• Why does outlook 2013, after initial setup, always fail to connect to an Exchange server/always ask for a password?

  After installing Outlook 2013 configuring it to connect to an exchange server (details about which, e.g., version, etc., I do not know how to provide) was stressful and the user used outlook without issue for a session. The next time outlook is started this error (Re. subject) occurs. The answer to this question solves the issue, or explains why it is happening (i.e., no one could provide a solution). It is only after outlook is closed and re-opened that it will not connect again to the server. • Project Architecture For Enhancing Legacy project.

  I am working on legacy project. Now the situation demands project to be divided into parts. What strategy I should follow to do this task. Description: The legacy project (A) is fully functional web application with almost well defined layers. But now i need to extend the project to a further enhancement. This project usage maven as build tool. But it is used only for dependency managements only. (project exported to war form inside eclipse). The new enhancement needs me to add new data table, new UI(jsp, css, js and images). What should be my strategy to enhance to application. My proposed design. I am planing to create two new projects Project B : Main Enhancement works will done in this project. Will have all layers like service layer, dao layer and UI layer in itself. And will be a web application in itself. Project C : Extract some common model and service code form project-A and create this project. This project will be added as dependency to both the projects. If my this approach is okay! Then i presume there will be problem be problem in deployment. These two projects will demand to deploy separately(currently tomcat is used). But I must deploy these two projects as one war. So, i need to have a plan to change the web.xml entries to have configurations for both projects. This will comes with some more complexities with project. What should be my design for the project? Does my plan sounds good.

• Help with Cygwin bash file

  Hi, I have a bash file, which I’m trying to run in Cygwin on a Windows 7 platform, but I gives me some odd errors when doing so. The bash file works on my Linux system. The bach file looks like this: for ((r=0; r <10; r++)) netcat localhost 4444 < myfile.file & done wait but I’m getting an error for my for-loop. More precise it writes: ./tuning_test.bsh: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `(' '/tuning_test.bsh: line 1: `?for ((r=0; r <10; r++)) I do not understand it because I was sure that I’ve a working bash file on my Linux. I even tried to find a for-loop example from a Linux-bash site and run it but with same error. I’m brand new to Cygwin and doesn’t know if it has some small quirks or some other thing I have to be aware of and I’ve tried to look through the documentation and FAQ on their homepage.
