• Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? • Windows service running as network service - how does it authenticate? Breaking change in W2K8?

  A Windows service running as "Network Service" talks to services on other machines (here: SQL Server and Analysis Services), using Windows authentication. For authentication, we have to grant permissions to the machine account of the service. E.g. if service runs on server MYSERVER in domain MYDOMAIN, it'll authenticate itself as "MYDOMAIN\MYSERVER$". - Am I correct, so far? Now here's my question: does this still apply when talking to a service on the SAME machine? Or will it authenticate with something like "NT AUTHORITY\Network Service" instead when connecting to a local service? And: is there any chance this is a breaking change from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008? We're having an actual issue in our system where the account was able to connect to local services with only the machine account having permissions in W2K3. In W2K8, this doesn't seem to work anymore: authentication to local services now fails, but still works to remote machines.

• Keeping packages on a large number of openSUSE servers updated

  Question for anyone out there managing a network of openSUSE machines. How do you keep track of and apply updates? I know about YaST Online Update (YOU) but it seems more geared towards keeping a single machine up to date. It doesn't seem to scale well to a larger number of machines. How do you keep your machines updated? Our network is fairly heterogenous in terms of package installation as the servers are mostly infrastructure machines with varying roles. I know that SUSE Linux Enterprise has tools to manage updates network-wide, but updating to that is currently not an option for budget reasons.

Example: if the user clicks on the button 'Settings' an ajax funcion will load from an external page the code and will put into the div with tag 'settings'.   The latest update of Windows Live Messenger is an msp added to the package. I want to patch a msp into an msi. (To get the msp and msi's I did the following Use resource hacker to open up wlsetup-all.exe In the left hand tree browse to PACKAGE Right click PACKAGE, save PACKAGE resources Save to a new temp folder Eg. D:\temp\package.rc This will output a whole lot of .bin files These are just cab files so we need to do a mass rename “ren *.bin *.cab” Once done select all cab files and extract to a new sub folder \extracted In \extracted you will see all the msi, msp and 7z files you need) I try to apply the msp directly with no result msiexec /p messenger.msp /a messenger.msi I also try doing a admin install with nothing being extracted.

Am I missing something or it really is very limited?

Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, undetectable watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution).   I suspect I'm a bit offtopic with the site mission, but it seems me more fitting for the question than stackoverflow i'm in preparing to create a vm with sensible data (personal use, it will be a web+mail+... appliance of sorts), i'd like to protect the data even with cryptography; the final choice have to be cross-platform for the host basically, I have to choose between guest system-level cryptography (say, dm-crypt or similar) or host level cryptography with truecrypt. do you think that the "truecrypt-volume contained virtualized disks" approach will hit the i/o performance of the vm badly (and therefore dm-crypt like approaches into the vm would be better), or is it doable? I'd like to protect all the guest data, not only my personal data, to be able to suspend the vm freely without worrying for the swap partition, etc

• What is the method to reset the Planar 1910m monitor?

  My monitor (a Planar, apparently model number PL1910M) is not working. (It is flashing a green / orange sequence which I believe to be an error code. The sequence, in case it helps consists of orange and green three times quickly followed by a longer orange, then another green followed by a long period where both colors appear to be present). I vaguely recall a co-worker suffering from a similar problem, and our IT department "resetting" the monitor by holding down a certain set of keys as they apply power. Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

  I've installed Java on Windows Vista, and every day I get a Vista security warning asking me if I want to run "jucheck". Apparently this is the Java automatic updater. Well, I don't want it to run on its own, ever. I cancel it, and quit it. I right-click on the taskbar and unclick "Check for Updates Automatically", and then click "Never Check", and "Apply". And yet, it never remembers this setting. If I come back to the "Java Control Panel" right after clicking "OK", the very same box is checked again, all on its own. Is there some way to kill jucheck once and for all? If I simply delete jucheck.exe, will Java (other than the automatic check) still work, and will manual updates still work, and will it stop even trying to update every morning?

  For most of my document writing I use iWork Pages (from iWork '09), and it's usually fine for me. I don't miss Microsoft Word, except for one simple feature: the ability to number chapter titles and paragraph headers for easy reference in the contents of the document and for cross references. Somehow, I cannot find this feature in Pages '09. It is possible to number headers by setting the style to numbered, but it doesn't mitigate well into the generated dynamic contents, and paragraphs don't follow the numbering of higher level elements it seems. Does anyone know how to make this work?

My problem: I want to create a bootable dvd to be able to restore same state(OS, configuration and apps) on another hardware(server). Some notes: I prefer ubuntu but my linux can be a different distributions if needed. w I prefer final result (bootable dvd) be simple and easy to use as installing a linux(ubuntu). I prefer a bootable DVD but if it's not possible, any other solution like partial backup/package even if needed to install first OS and then apply the package/backup/... can be good. • IIS Redirect a sub directory to an external URL

  Hi forgive my ignorance for I am a humble client side developer... I am a webapp made up of static HTML and JS. But I want to call an external service via AJAX, this causes some issues with CORS or Cross Domain policy on the browser. So I need to make a request to MY server http://dev.webapp.com/service So I want to redirect the /service on the server to http://externaldata.com/service And return the result. The Mac boys have acheived this in Apache with a proxy pass: ProxyPass /service http://externaldata.com/service Can anybody help with how to do this in IIS? I have found articles about ARRs and Reverse Proxy, terms that are alien and seem too complicated. As a humble webdev can I do this using IIS GUI?

• Is there software that lets me drag windows between two PCs? (there is!)

  I'm looking for a preferably free program that is similar to MaxiVista, which lets you extend you desktop to another desktops screen on the same network. But with MaxiVista you have to extend the entire screen. I'd like to just drag one window onto the other computers screen without extending the desktop. So on top of the other computer's windows. Kind of like a cross between MaxiVista and Windows 7' XP mode where you can run XP programs on the windows 7 desktop. EDIT: I am pleased to announce this is possible, though the windows is poor quality (8-bit color) but I believe thats just because MetaVNC isn't very up to date.

• Can a 32-bit RHEL4 userland work with a 64-bit kernel?

  Is there a way to change an i386 RHEL4 machine to run an amd64 kernel, but ensure that it still builds software into same i386 binaries? On Debian this seems quite straightforward: just install an amd64 kernel (worst case, build one like this guy: http://www.debian-administration.org/users/jonesy/weblog/1) and prefix everything with "linux32". Then everything that considers uname -m will be unchanged, I just need to handle the few cases that consider uname -r. What is the Red Hat equivalent? Is the only way a full 64-bit installation on another disk and then chrooting back to the 32-bit system before anyone builds anything? (Even the best examples of that seem to be Debian-based.) Background: We make a large system that runs on (a variant of) i386 RHEL4. However, some of the larger RHEL build machines now have enough RAM that they might benefit from going 64-bit (for the kernel and maybe some of the bigger build steps). Our build system doesn't support cross-compilation.

With boost 1.41 (which is in ports) mapnik doesn't build. somewhere in internet, i found that mapnik successfully builded with boost 1.42. • RODC password replication and A/D sites and subnets

  I work at a school district with about 30 school sites. Windows 2008 A/D setup - all central at the district office. In A/D, all is under one site, and no subnets defined. One A/D forest and only one domain under that. We're now looking to start putting RODCs at the schools to put the authentication and DNS out there closer to them. I haven't worked with A/D sites and subnets, and only a little with RODC password replication. But just got an invite to a meeting to talk about this tomorrow... If we start breaking down the A/D pieces into sites/subnets, can we also use that as a way to help apply an RODC password replication policy in a way that matches so that only each school sites' users passwords are replicated/cached on their RODC?

• Localhost permissions given different values in fireftp and cs4 dreamweaver

  While testing a file uploader on my localhost ( mamp on mac ) I've hit a problem. Trying to fix a folder permissions problem, I used CS4 Dreamweaver's permissions screen to set 0777 permissions. However these wouldn't apply and stayed stuck on 0, so I opened fireftp and accessed the folder in the local panel. The permissions there are 0777. So I have a folder that has permissions of 0 and 0777 at the same time. How can I resolve this and make sure the permissions are 0777?

• Preferred OS for hosting Tomcat servlet container

  I know that I'm taking a risk, pitting the differing OS religions against each other, but I would like professional opinions about hosting a servlet container. In my case the container is set, we will be using Tomcat. But what is in question is the hosting operating system. We have administrators experienced in Windows Server 2003. We have developers experienced in Solaris, OSX, and Linux. There is no warring between these groups, just a question of who will ramp up through the learning curve necessary to use the OS that they are unfamiliar with. So given all the cooperative spirit, we are struggling with how to find the most efficient path. I had already cross-posted this question here.
