• Handling user security scope with nHibernate or other ORM

  How should one handle the situation where you may need to filter by a group of users. Here is the scenario. I have an administrator role in my company. I should be able to see all the data belonging to me plus all the other users who I have control over. A plain old user however should only be able to access their own data. If you are writing regular sql statements then you can have a security table with every user and who they have access too but i'm not sure how to handle this situation in the OO and ORM world. Any one dealt with this scenario in a web application using an ORM? Would love to hear your thoughts!

  I'm having problems with the execution of ServerFilterByForm in Access 2003 When I apply the entered filter it returns the requested data but after it appear on screen (Form) it disappears. • Cross-domain data access in JavaScript

  We have an ASP.Net application hosted on our network and exposed to a specific client. This client wants to be able to import data from their own server into our application. The data is retrieved with an HTTP request and is CSV formatted. The problem is that they do not want to expose their server to our network and are requesting the import to be done on the client side (all clients are from the same network as their server). So, what needs to be done is: They request an import page from our server The client script on the page issues a request to their server to get CSV formatted data The data is sent back to our application This is not a challenge when both servers are on the same domain: a simple hidden iframe or something similar will do the trick, but here what I'm getting is a cross-domain "access denied" error. They also refuse to change the data format to return JSON or XML formatted data. What I tried and learned so far is: Hidden iframe -- "access denied" XMLHttpRequest -- behaviour depends on the browser security settings: may work, may work while nagging a user with security warnings, or may not work at all Dynamic script tags -- would have worked if they could have returned data in JSON format IE client data binding -- the same "access denied" error Is there anything else I can try before giving up and saying that it will not be possible without exposing their server to our application, changing their data format or changing their browser security settings? (DNS trick is not an option, by the way).

• Non-string role names in ASP.NET MVC?

  ASP.NET MVC has good support for role-based security, but the usage of strings as role names is maddening, simply because they cannot be strongly-typed as enumerations. For example, I have an "Admin" role in my app. The "Admin" string will now exist in the Authorize attribute of my action, in my master page (for hiding a tab), in my database (for defining the roles available to each user), and any other place in my code or view files where I need to perform special logic for admin or non-admin users. Is there a better solution, short of writing my own authorization attribute and filter, that would perhaps deal with a collection of enumeration values?

• Select distinct users with referrals

  I have a bunch of Users. Since Django doesn't really let me extend the default User model, they each have Profiles. The Profiles have a referred_by field (a FK to User). I'm trying to get a list of Users with = 1 referral. Here's what I've got so far Profile.objects.filter(referred_by__isnull=False).values_list('referred_by', flat=True) Which gives me a list of IDs of the users who have referrals... but I need it to be distinct, and I want the User object, not their ID. Or better yet, it would be nice if it could return the number of referrals a user has. Any ideas?

  When I open the properties on a network connnection on windows, I see this dialog: In this dialog, in the check-listbox I can enable or disable options like "File or printer sharing", "client for microsoft networks" or network filter drivers. My question is: How can I enable/disable these options programatically? I didn't find anything that looks like this in the WMI documentation and I couldn't find any other Win32 API for this. I would prefer a C Win32 API or WMI interface, but a solution using any programming language is welcome. The question is language-agnostic.

  Hello, i have a GridView bound to a DataView. Some columns in the DataView's table are foreignkeys to related tables(f.e. Customer). I want to enable sorting for these columns too, but all i can do is sorting the foreignkey(fiCustomer) and not the CustomerName. • c++ Design pattern for CoW, inherited classes, and variable shared data?

  I've designed a copy-on-write base class. The class holds the default set of data needed by all children in a shared data model/CoW model. The derived classes also have data that only pertains to them, but should be CoW between other instances of that derived class. I'm looking for a clean way to implement this. If I had a base class FooInterface with shared data FooDataPrivate and a derived object FooDerived. I could create a FooDerivedDataPrivate. The underlying data structure would not effect the exposed getters/setters API, so it's not about how a user interfaces with the objects. I'm just wondering if this is a typical MO for such cases or if there's a better/cleaner way? What peeks my interest, is I see the potential of inheritance between the the private data classes. E.g. • What data should I use to create an autofill "destination" field like Facebook or the Trip Advisor s

  In order to create a “destination” auto filter input field on our website, I need a data source that provides a hierarchical data set of Region, Country, County/State, City and Town (plus an area like the Peak District National Park if at all possible) I know sites like Trip Advisor and Facebook seem to have very robust datasets for this. When you type, it brings up a match list with the hierarchy displayed (e.g. if you type Boston you get 6 results as there are multiply places called Boston – the hierarchy allows you to pick the correct option) There are many data sources out there but they either lack hierarchy or do not seem to be easily updatable or complete. I had expected this to be an easy task given the amount of site that have a destination or location autofill field. However, i cannot find a datasource or method that works. any help would be much appreciated. Tks,

• Access DoCmd.OpenForm Not Working

  Looking for a second set of eyes to figure out my problem with an Access form filter. I created a search form, when filled in, appends search criteria to a string variable (strQuery) that is put in place to the [WhereCondition] for opening a form. However, when the script is ran, nothing comes up except for a filtered form with no records. Here is the line that opens the form: DoCmd.OpenForm "ADD_NEW_NCMR", , , strQuery Before the line is ran, strQuery equals: 1=1 AND [NCMR].[NCMR_NUM] = '12-129' The form name, and table.column combination are all correct. In fact, using the DCount function returns the result of 1, which is correct for this query, and returns the correct number for other queries as well. This makes me think that there is nothing wrong with the where condition. DCount("[NCMR_NUM]", "NCMR", strQuery)

• How do you design a database to allow fast multicolumn searching?

  I am creating a real estate search from RETS data, but this is a general question. When you have a variety of columns that you would like the user to be able to filter their search result by, how do you optimize this? For example, http://www.charlestonrealestateguide.com/listings.php has 16 or so optional filters. Granted, he only has up to 11,000 entries (I have the same data), but I don't imagine the search is performed with just a giant WHERE AND AND AND ... clause. Or is this typically accomplished with one giant multicolumn index? Newegg, Amazon, and countless others also have cool & fast filtering systems for large amounts of data. How do they do it? And is there a database optimization reason for the tendency to provide ranges instead of empty inputs, or is that merely for user convenience?

  I want to construct a value in a list comprehension, but also filter on that value. For example: [expensive_function(x) for x in generator where expensive_function(x) < 5] I want to avoid calling expensive_function twice per iteration. The generator may return an infinite series, and list comprehensions aren't lazily evaluated. So this wouldn't work: [y in [expensive_function(x) for x in generator where expensive_function(x)] where y < 5] I could write this another way, but it feels right for a list comprehension and I'm sure this is a common usage pattern (possible or not!).

• Is there a way to tell git-status to ignore the effects of .gitignore files?

  I have configured numerous .gitignore files to filter out many different unwanted files from a set of about 6,000 untracked files. I want to do 'git add .' when I've got my filtered list looking the way I want it. But, then I want to disable the .gitignore filters temporarily to see what got left behind, and make sure there was nothing important accidentally filtered. I know that git-clean includes an option to ignore .gitignore files - is there a similar option for git-status? I could go through and delete all the .gitignore files, do the check, then restore them, but it seems there should be an easier way?

• One repository/multiple projects without getting mixed up?

  Hello After reading Joel's last article on Mercurial, I'm giving it a shot on XP as a single-user, single-computer source control system. One thing I'd like to check, though, is: It'd be easier to just create a repository of all the tiny projects I keep in eg. C:\VB.Net\, but the result is that the changes I make to the different projects therein (C:\VB.Net\ProjectA\, C:\VB.Net\ProjectB\, etc.) will be mixed in a single changelog. But if I use a single repository for all projects, when I do diff's or go through the change history, will I be able to filter data so that I only see changes pertaining to a given project? Otherwise, is creating repositories in each project directory the only solution? Thank you.

  I currently have a form that I am building that needs to support two different versions. Each version might use a different subset of form fields. I have to do this to support two different clients, but I don't want to have entirely different controller actions for both. So, I am trying to come up with a way to use a strongly typed model with validation attributes but have some of these attributes be conditional. Some approaches I can think of is similar to steve sanderson's partial validation approach. Where I would clear the model errors in a filter OnActionExecuting based on which version of the form was active. • Is there simple way to play an rtp video/audio stream in WPF?

  I need to create a WPF control that will play an rtp stream with the requirement that the latency needs to be as low as possible. I've looked at the following two projects: http://vlcdotnet.codeplex.com/ http://wpfmediakit.codeplex.com/ As far as I know, I can't use VLC because we're shipping a commercial application with a more restrictive license than GPL (i.e. we can't ship our source). Wpf media kit is nice, but I can't seem to find a good/free rtp directshow source filter and I wanted to ask if there is a simpler solution out there that I'm missing before I jump into writing my own. Any ideas?

• IE - Color transparent not working

  Hello, I have a problem with the IE (what else?): I generate content with CSS which has also a background-image. I looks like that: #nav ul li:after { content: "--"; position: relative; z-index: 99; background: transparent url(image.png); color: transparent; } The text color is in non-IE-browsers transparent, but in all IE browsers it's black and you could see it. How could I make the text transparent/unvisible? I tried already: visibility - opacity - filter - text-indent ... But none did his job right, either it disappears (with it background which I need) or the attribute doesn't apply.

• Access Controller Context/ TempData from business objects

  I am trying to build a session/tempdata provider that can be swapped. The default provider will work on top of asp.net mvc and it needed to access the .net mvc TempData from the business object class. I know the tempdata is available through the controller context, but i cant seem to find if that is exposed through HttpContext or something. I dont really want to pass the Controller context as an argument as that would dilute my interface definition since only asp.net based session provider needs this, other (using NoSQL DB etc) doesn't care about Controller Context. To clarify further, adding little more code here. my ISession interface look like this. and when this code goes to production, the session/tempdata is expected to work using NoSql db. • WCF data services (OData), query with inheritance limitation?

  Project: WCF Data service using internally EF4 CTP5 Code-First approach. I configured entities with inheritance (TPH). See previous question on this topic: Previous question about multiple entities- same table The mapping works well, and unit test over EF4 confirms that queries runs smoothly. My entities looks like this: ContactBase (abstract) Customer (inherits from ContactBase), this entity has also several Navigation properties toward other entities Resource (inherits from ContactBase) I have configured a discriminator, so both Customer and Resource map to the same table. Again, everythings works fine on the Ef4 point of view (unit tests all greens!) However, when exposing this DBContext over WCF Data services, I get: - CustomerBases sets exposed (Customers and Resources sets seems hidden, is it by design?) - When I query over Odata on Customers, I get this error: Navigation Properties are not supported on derived entity types. Entity Set 'ContactBases' has a instance of type 'CodeFirstNamespace.Customer', which is an derived entity type and has navigation properties. Please remove all the navigation properties from type 'CodeFirstNamespace.Customer'.
