• NSTimer as a self-targeting ivar.

  I have come across an awkward situation where I would like to have a class with an NSTimer instance variable that repeatedly calls a method of the class as long as the class is alive. For illustration purposes, it might look like this: // .h @interface MyClock : NSObject { NSTimer* _myTimer; } - (void)timerTick; @end - // .m @implementation MyClock - (id)init { self = [super init]; if (self) { _myTimer = [[NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1.0f target:self selector:@selector(timerTick) userInfo:nil repeats:NO] retain]; } return self; } - (void)dealloc { [_myTimer invalidate]; [_myTImer release]; [super dealloc]; } - (void)timerTick { // Do something fantastic. } @end That's what I want. I don't want to to have to expose an interface on my class to start and stop the internal timer, I just want it to run while the class exists. Seems simple enough. But the problem is that NSTimer retains its target. That means that as long as that timer is active, it is keeping the class from being dealloc'd by normal memory management methods because the timer has retained it. Manually adjusting the retain count is out of the question. This behavior of NSTimer seems like it would make it difficult to ever have a repeating timer as an ivar, because I can't think of a time when an ivar should retain its owning class. This leaves me with the unpleasant duty of coming up with some method of providing an interface on MyClock that allows users of the class to control when the timer is started and stopped. Besides adding unneeded complexity, this is annoying because having one owner of an instance of the class invalidate the timer could step on the toes of another owner who is counting on it to keep running. I could implement my own pseudo-retain-count-system for keeping the timer running but, ...seriously? This is way to much work for such a simple concept. Any solution I can think of feels hacky. I ended up writing a wrapper for NSTimer that behaves exactly like a normal NSTimer, but doesn't retain its target. I don't like it, and I would appreciate any insight.

• Our embedded linux system won't recognize a USB Device if it is plugged in before powerup. Suggestions?

  We are developing on a small embedded device. This device us a gumstix overo board running OpenEmbedded linux. We have our development almost completely done, and have run into the strangest of bugs that we can't figure out. We have a USB Device (Spectrophotometer) that has a USB2.0 Connection and an external power supply for the light source. Typical behavior is that you plug in the power supply, then the USB connection to a host. When the usb connection is detected by the device, the device boots up and enables the light source and fan. The device is then able to be used by the host system. The problem is that if the device is plugged into the Gumstix before we turn on the Gumstix, the USB Device apparently is not probed by the system (and hence does not turn on). Under a normal situation, when the connection is initialized by plugging in the usb cable, the spectro turns itself on and becomes available to the system (this can be seen via "lsusb" typically). Neither of these things are happening. There is no device detected via "lsusb" and no dmesg errors of any kind that we can see. It is as if the device is not plugged in. The device does show up and work fine if we unplug the USB cable and plug it back in once the system is booted up. It turns on and shows up on the usb bus, and we can access it with our driver. On any other desktop or laptop, it does not matter if the host system is on or off when we plug in the spectrometer. This behavior is what I would consider to be "normal" - that the usb system is probed and initialized at boot time, and the usb devices come online. In other words, our system is fully functional as long as we plug in the usb device after the system is booted up. Unfortunately this isn't possible in our final product - everything comes on at once. Additional Info: 1) We have tried a flash drive attached to the system when the system is turned off. Booting up the system brings the flash drive online, as expected 2) There are no messages regarding the spectro or usb device (using dmesg). "lsusb" only lists the USB hubs / controllers. It is literally as if the device is not present and not plugged in. 3) We have tried a brand new image from gumstix and an older image from last year. Both images have this problem. This problem exists on all 3 gumstix devices we use. Does anyone have any suggestions? From what I can tell it isn't really possible to do a complete "reboot" of the usb system that is a complete emulation of "unplugging" and "replugging" a usb device. I feel like what is happening is that there is no initial probe on the usb bus that would trigger the usb handshaking, but this is somehow specific to the spectro. This seems to be a kernel issue or at least an issue in how the kernel is initializing the usb subsystem. I'm not really sure though. I have tried the gumstix mailing list, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who has seen this issue before. Any advice or suggestions on where to start looking would be fantastic. Thank you! • Customized sorting on DataTable in C#?

  This is a C# Winform question. I have a DataGridView which is bounded to a DataTable. I construct the DataTable myself, which several DataColumn instances. When the DataTable is bound to the DataGridView, by default, every column is sortable by clicking the headers of the DataGridView. But the sorting behavior is something "by default". It seems that it is sorted by string. This is true even if I put this as my code: DataColumn dc = new DataColumn("MyObjectColumn", typeof(MyObject)); And MyObject has overriden ToString() and has implemented the IComparable interface. That means even if I have told the DataTable how to sort the special column with the implementation of IComparable interface, DataGridView still doesn't do it the way I expect. So how can I let DataTable sort data in the way I want? Thanks for the answers.

  I'm a bit unsure about the Usage Information and Limits of Yahoo YQL. Per application limit (identified by your Access Key): 100,000 calls per day. Per IP limits: /v1/public/: 1,000 calls per hour; /v1/yql/: 10,000 calls per hour. Do I require an application/access key for the /v1/public/ interface, non of the examples uses one. If I don't need an application key and only access the /v1/public/ interface I only have do worry about the IP limits of 1,000 calls per hour, right?

  I have a project that generates text (representing an interface and a class) based on metadata. I would like to take this generated code and insert it as a new class and interface directly into the currently opened solution under a specific project and directory. I will create the menu tool that will generate the class but what I don't know how to do is gain access to the following items from within my custom Visual Studio Extension: Iterate the current solution and find a project to dump the generated code into. Open a new file window within Visual Studio and inject the generated text that comes from my tool directly into that window. Create a new folder in a specific project within the current solution from within my custom extension. EDIT - To clarify I need to open a new file (e.g. Right Click on a Project - Add - New Class) and insert text into it from within my custom Visual Studio Extension. Thanks

  hi, I have methods which return interface and some methods which accepts interface as parameters. I am trying to use Net DataContractSerializer but I am getting following error... The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://tempuri.org/:id. The InnerException message was 'Error in line 1 position 120. XML 'Element' 'http://tempuri.org/:id' does not contain expected attribute 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/:Type'. The deserializer has no knowledge of which type to deserialize. Check that the type being serialized has the same contract as the type being deserialized.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Please help me how to resolve this error.... If I use Netdatacontract attribute on Operation Contract, can i use DataContract and Datamember attribute on serializable class??? Thanks in advance...

• Optimising local image loading/rendering on iPhone

  Hi, I'm looking to create an interface where the user can navigate through large volumes of images. Each image has a thumbnail of 128x128 that I wish to display and will be kind of similar to coverflow in operation. I have this all working in principle but am becoming stuck when navigating through content at speed. The interface begins to stutter and becoming jerky. I believe this is primarily because of disk i/o and the cost of rendering each image. Is there anyway this can be handed over to a seperate thread simply? Defaulting to a greyed out thumbnail until the image has loaded? How have Apple managed to achieve this in coverflow? Many thanks,

• Inherited properties aren't bound during databinding

The CreatedBy and CreatedOn are not seen. Is there a way I can get these values visible during databinding?

• How do I use IImgCtx to get load an image with an alpha channel?

  I have some working code that uses IImgCtx to load images, but I can't work out how to get at the alpha channel. For images like .gif's and .png's there are transparent pixels, but using anything other than a 24-bit bitmap as a drawing surface doesn't work. So it works if I create a 24 bits/pixel bitmap but has no alpha to speak of, and it leaves the 32 bits/pixel bitmap blank. Now this interface apparently is used by Internet Explorer to load images, and obviously THAT supports transparency, so I believe that it's possible to get some level of alpha out of the interface. The question is how? (I also have fall back code that will call libpng/libjpeg/my .gif loader etc)

  Hi, I've got a staeful session bean. @Scope(ScopeType.SESSION) @Name("chuckNorrisBean") public class ChuckNorrisBean implements Serializable, ChuckNorris with some function public void roundHouseKick() { ... } interface @Local public interface ChuckNorris { public void roundHouseKick() { ... } } and calling them on a jsf .xhtml page using #{chuckNorrisBean.roundHouseKick} which works perfectly fine. However if I add the @Stateful annotation to the bean so it becomes @Stateful @Scope(ScopeType.SESSION) @Name("chuckNorrisBean") public class ChuckNorrisBean implements Serializable, ChuckNorris and the page will load with exceptions complainig about Exception during request processing:Caused by javax.servlet.ServletException with message: "#{chuckNorrisBean.roundHouseKick}: javax.el.MethodNotFoundException: //localhost/universe/earth.xhtml @41,65 action= "#{chuckNorrisBean.roundHouseKick}": Method not found: ChuckNorrisBean:a6gkg-w6das4-g8wmgh0y-1-g8woy0wo-4b.roundHouseKick()" Any advice on what might've went wrong with my chuckNorrisBean? The system is built on SEAM/richfaces. Thanks!

• Why is there no music streaming API service?

  Apple has decided to kill lala.com. I loved that site. Now, everyone has to go back to paying $0.89+ for songs from Amazon, iTunes, etc. Lame. Rhapsody would be great, except there are no clients for Mac or Linux. They do have a web interface, buy it is nothing compared to lala's web 2.0y interface. What I just don't understand is, why is there no music API streaming service out there? Basically, developers could hook the service into any desktop or web app, and then users of the app could pay $x a month (like with Rhapsody) and play any amount of music, so long as their subscription is active. Why not? Lala streamed music to web browsers, so surely it could be as secure as lala is (was), preventing music theft.

• Queue ExternalInterface calls to Flash Object in UpdatePanel - Needs Improvement?

  A Flash (actually Flex) object is created on an ASP.Net page within an Update Panel using a modified version of the embedCallAC_FL_RunContent.js script so it can be written in dynamically. It is re-created with this script with each partial postback to that panel. There are also other Update Panels on the page. With some postbacks (partial and full), External Interface calls such as $get('FlashObj').ExternalInterfaceFunc('arg1', 0, true); are prepared server-side and added to the page using ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript. They're embedded in a function and stuffed into Sys.Application's load event, for example Sys.Application.add_load(funcContainingExternalInterfaceCalls). The problem is that because the Flash object's state state may change with each partial postback, the Flash (Flex) object and/or External Interface may not be ready or even exist yet in the DOM when the JavaScript - Flash External Interface call is made. It results in an "Object doesn't support this property or method" exception. I am still on the learning curve with respect to concepts like closures why "eval()" is apparently evil, so I'm wondering if I'm violating some best practice or if this code should be improved, if so how? There are nice controls as Manila Interface SDK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566188), Sense Interface SDK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648906) and so on for free, but they work only on .NET CF 3.5. Furthermore, there are others that you have to pay for them and for .NET CF 2.0 and 3.5 (Resco or Touch Control Suite). And there is one called Fluid (http://fluid.codeplex.com/) but it's so complicated, there are not exactly controls (are classes added to a host control) and there is not much documentation to work with it. Any nice controls for free and working in .NET CF 2.0? And with list sliders if it's possible? Thanks!

This structure has following members: { BSTR m_sFirst; BSTR m_sSecond; VARIANT m_vChildStruct; //This member encapsulate a sub structure SAFEARRAY __RPC_FAR * m_saArray; }CustomINFO; I am allocating the memory for the structs using CoTaskMemAlloc and encapsulating it in Variant as follows: vV-vt = VT_RECORD; vV-pvRecord = pStruct; //Pointer of sturct vV-pRecInfo = pRI; //RecordInfo Interface Is it enough to call VariantClear to deallocate the memory of struct and its members? Will it also release the IRecordInfo interface? Or i have to manually get the encapsulated struct and deallocate each member myself and then use CoTaskMemFree to deallocate sturct. • wcf class implementing two operation contracts in different service contracts with same name

  Hello, I have declared two service contracts as follows: [ServiceContract] public interface IContract1 { [OperationContract] double Add(int ip); } [ServiceContract] public interface IContract2 { [OperationContract] double Add(double ip); } I have a class which implements these two contracts. I have created two end points for both the contracts. But I'm not able to access the service from client code. It displays a big error when i try to update the service reference as: Metadata contains an error that cannot be resolved.... There was no endpoint listening at ... etc. I know that you can't have two OperationContracts with the same name but is it possible to have two operation contracts in different service contracts with same name but different signature? Thanks.

• WinForm Plugin system

  I have created a c# 2.0 WinForm application which loads dlls, searches for an interface, and then loads the interface as a plugin. I am loading the plugins in the same appdomain as the main application because they have a GUI which I am directly loading into the application as a tab item. I would like to load them in their own app domain, but do not think it is possible because of the GUI. I would also like to monitor them to tell if they are not responsive and unload them. Is this possible? If I upgrade to WPF are things any simpler.

• What is the correct way to specify dimensions in DIP from Java code ?

  Trying to digest docs about design Multiple resolutions (http://d.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html#dips-pels) I found that it is possible to set dimensions of my interface elements in XML layouts using DIPs as in following fragment : "android:layout_width="10dip" But all Java interface takes integer as arguments and there is no way to specify dimensions in DIPs. What is the correct way to calculate this ? I figured that I have to use property density of DisplayMetrics class but is this a correct way ? May I relly that formula : pixels * DisplayMetrics.density = dip is always correct ? Will there be API in DIPs for Java ?

• Integrating Jython Cpython

  I am about to begin a project where I will likely use PyQt or Pyside. I will need to interface with a buggy 3rd party piece of server software that provides C++ and Java APIs. The Java APIs are a lot easier to use because you get Exceptions where with the C++ libraries you get segfaults. Also, the Python bindings to the Java APIs are automatic with Jython whereas the Python bindings for the C++ APIs don't exist. So, how would a CPython PyQt client application be able to communicate with these Java APIs? How would you go about it? Would you have another separate Java process on the client that serializes / pickles objects and communicates with the PyQt process over a socket? I don't want to re-invent the wheel... is there some sort of standard interface for these types of things? Some technology I should look into? RPC, Corba, etc? Thanks, ~Eric

  Hello, I have plain POCOs here and as INotifyPropertyChanged is a Interface for the Views need its implemented in the ViewModel not the Model. Now I want to show validation errors in the View beside every textbox the user typed in data. I do not want to implemented the IDataErrorInfo interface in my Models because lets assume I am not allowed to touch them as they come from another Service/Supplier. I do not want to put my IsCustomerFirstNameLenthValid Method into the Model because I could not have access to it or I just dont want to pollute my Models with interface`s having nothing to do there! How can I validate my naked POCO`s in the ViewModel and forward the results to the View by showing validation errors ?

• Adding More Than 2 Delegates in iPhone App

  This is a simple question that can be answered fast by someone who's more familiar with Objective-C than I am- how can one add more than 2 delegates to a Class? To clarify, I'm used to putting delegates in classes like this: @interface ViewController : UIViewController <UIWebViewDelegate> { ... When I try to put two delegates: @interface ViewController : UIViewController <UIWebViewDelegate> <UITextFieldDelegate> { ... ...the app gives many errors, none of which help with the situation. Is there a separator that I need to put between the delegates, or is it possible at all to have more than two? Thanks for any help in advance.
