Public-facing SharePoint 2007 portal - authentication question

I am involved in developing a portal with a public-facing side. For this i created a web application with windows authentication for intranet zone and after that, I created an extension for an internet zone with fba. In the internet extension we have the following requirement: - able to acess to sharepoint backoffice using fba. - have a authentication mecanism for portal visitors, where they can authenticate and acess to a page where they can subscribe the newsletter and define some site appearance (this users can't acess to sharepoint backoffice). My idea is use the aspnet membership provider to authenticate both users and create diferente roles for them. Anyone suggests another approach? Is there any way to ensure that visitors (2 case) do not enter the backoffice portal? Thanks

Calling function using 'new' is less expensive than without it?

I would have assumed that because new adds more complexity to the execution of a function by getting prototypes involved, it would be slower. How to make += operator keep the object reference?

Say, I have a class: class M { public int val; And also a + operator inside it: public static M operator +(M a, M b) { M c = new M(); c.val = a.val + b.val; return c; } } And I've got a List of the objects of the class: List<M> ms = new List(); M obj = new M(); obj.val = 5; ms.Add(obj); Some other object: M addie = new M(); addie.val = 3; I can do this: ms[0] += addie; and it surely works as I expect - the value in the list is changed. But if I want to do M fromList = ms[0]; fromList += addie; it doesn't change the value in ms for obvious reasons. But intuitively I expect ms[0] to also change after that. Really, I pick the object from the list and then I increase it's value with some other object. So, since I held a reference to ms[0] in fromList before addition, I want still to hold it in fromList after performing it. Are there any ways to achieve that?

Problems with cross forest authentication in SQL Reporting

We're currently running an SQL 2008 R2 Cluster with Reporting Services running, all for use with System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 (RU3). Our users are on a different domains to the SCOM and SQL servers (we have two domains as we are in the process of a domain migration) We have no problems at all with users accessing reports via the SCOM Console or the Web interface if they are on the new domain which runs at 2008 R2 functional level. However users on the old domain (which runs at a 2003 functional level) cannot access reports on SCOM or via the web interface (http://sqlserver/reports) The error we get is: An error occurred when invoking the authorization extension. (rsAuthorizationExtensionError) For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors Taking the errors advise we logged on to the SQL server as a user on the old domain (which works fine!) and then try to authenticate with the reporting via the web interface which produces this most useful of errors: An error occurred when invoking the authorization extension. (rsAuthorizationExtensionError) The creator of this fault did not specify a Reason. Things we've tried: Recreating the trust between domains Ensuring the SQL Reporting service account was a member of Windows Authorization Access Group on the 2003 domain Added users on the 2003 domain explicitly to the Reporting Users group on the SQL Server Has anyone come across this issue before perhaps in a different scenario? Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

I have a new teamcity build agent machine, which when started up tries to connect to the build server and fails. It never shows up in the connected, disconnected or unauthorised agents tabs of the build server web interface. The logs on the build agent show that it fails to connect with a 504 gateway timeout. Other VMS with similar configuration can connect fine and do not report this error. What can possibly be preventing this connection?

WDS updating raid drivers in an already existing image WIM

Here is my current setup. WDS installed on Server 2008 R2 for the new driverstore and multicast features. A Windows Server 2003 32bit Standard image built to support previous DL360 models. A new HP DL360 G6 which has a new raid controller in it. I need to add the driver for the raid controller into my Server 2003 32bit standard install image but I can't seem to figure out the correct method to do so. So far I've tried the following: Mounting the image and placing the drivers into the Sysprep drivers folder, adding the PCI device codes into the sysprep.inf file and committing the changes to the image. Pushing the image to a DL360 G4, ensuring the driver is in the correct locations and re-sysprepping the image. Hoping that the new driverstore feature would magically work with 2003 (a guy can dream cant he?) Is there some standard method that I can use to update this image with the new drivers or do I need to start from scratch with an entirely new build? Thanks in advance.

Read Only Domain Controllers and DNS zone updates

I have a Windows 2003 domain and just added a new DC that runs 2008 R2. I updated the schema accordingly for both forest and domain levels. I also made sure to run /rodcprep at the time I did this. I have a branch office with a 2008 R2 file/print server that is a read-only domain controller (DC). The one problem I have been having is with AD-integrated DNS records updates. In the data center, we had to make an IP address change on a particular server. All our other sites' DCs (2003) updated the record fine. The 2008 R2 DC in the data center also updates its record fine. However, the RODC in the branch office does not. So if I nslookup the target server on a 2003 DC, the IP address is correct. Same with the 2008 R2 DC in the data center. But an nslookup on the branch office RODC still pulls in the old IP address. Moreover, any new records we've created (e.g., just added a new terminal server) do not get updated on the branch RODC either. Is there something simple I'm missing? How do I get the RODC to sync its AD-integrated DNS records with the rest of my world? Thank you in advance for your responses. Mike

How much network latency is "typical" for east - west coast USA?

At the moment we're trying to decide whether to move our datacenter from the west coast to the east coast. However, I am seeing some disturbing latency numbers from my west coast location to the east coast. Here's a sample result, retrieving a small .png logo file in Google Chrome and using the dev tools to see how long the request takes: West coast to east coast: 215 ms latency, 46 ms transfer time, 261 ms total West coast to west coast: 114 ms latency, 41 ms transfer time, 155 ms total It makes sense that Corvallis, OR is geographically closer to my location in Berkeley, CA so I expect the connection to be a bit faster.. but I'm seeing an increase in latency of +100ms when I perform the same test to the NYC server. That seems .. excessive to me. Particularly since the time spent transferring the actual data only increased 10%, yet the latency increased 100%! That feels... wrong... to me. I found a few links here that were helpful (through Google no less!) ... Does routing distance affect performance significantly? How does geography affect network latency? Latency in Internet connections from Europe to USA ... but nothing authoritative. So, is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. What is the "typical" latency I should expect when moving network packets from the east coast <--> west coast of the USA?

ipv6 port 445 does not accept the request from a global type address

I want to scan the port 445 in windows server 2003, but my scanner only have one type ipv6 address which is global not link-local. When I do this,I find that I can't find port 445 open. But I use the command "netstat -an" to assure the port 445 is listening. Finally I find this confusing phenomenon: 1.when I set a link-local ddress in my scanner, then it will work in scanning port 445. 2.when I only set a global address in my scanner, it doed not work. This means if a host with a link-local address use socket to send a syn packet to the port 445 in server 2003, it will receive a ack packet. But if with a global address it will receive a rst packet. Thus, I can't scan the port 445 in server 2003 with a global address. I need to know why? Can anybody help? And I use the netsh-firewall to check the exception and netsh-interface-ipv6 to turn off the firewall on the specific interface. Still can't establish the connection with port 445, do you have any ideal about this ?

Internet connection & IIS stopped on windows xp after VMware server 2 installation

Hi, I'm running a local network. My IP ranges from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.15. All IP are static ones. And my router's IP is 192.168.1.1 and I provide it as default gateway and preferred DNS server on client machines. Everything worked fine on this scenario. I could use internet and reach services on other machines. BUT I have installed VMware server 2 on the windows XP to host windows 2003 Virtual Machine (VM). I set the following configuration: Windows XP's => 192.168.1.11. Windows 2003 => 192.168.1.12. (virtual machine) This approach worked just fine as it used to work with Microsoft Virtual PC. I can access mysql & IIS websites on the windows 2003 virtual machine. BUT two things doesn't work anymore on the Windows XP: internet connection - but I can see the MAC address on the wireless router IIS - Ping on 127.0.0.1 it's ok as I can hit localhost:8222 nor localhost Does anyone knows how to fix any of this? (at least the internet connection)

Windows Server 2008 32 bit & windows 7 professional SP1

I'm testing my new Windows Server 2008 32 bit edition (2 servers) as a server and Windows 7 professional 32 bit as a client. Let say one is a primary domain controller (PDC) and the other is a backup domain controller (BDC) like the old time to ease. Every setup were done in the PDC and just replicate to BDC. Didn't setup anything, just install the server with AD, DNS, DHCP, that's all. Then I use my windows 7 pro 32 bit to join the domain. It worked. After that I tried to change the password of a the user (not administrator) but it always failed said it didn't meet the password complexity setup while in fact there's no setup at all either in account policy, default domain policy or even local policy. Tried to disable the password complexity in the default domain policy instead of didn't set all then test again but still failed. Browse and found suggestion to setup the minimum and maximum password age to 0 but it also failed. Tried to restart the server and the client then change password, still failed with the same error, didn't meet password complexity setup. Tried to see in the rsop.msc but didn't found anything. In fact, if I see the setup in another system with windows server 2003 and windows xp, using rsop.msc I can see there's setup for computer configuration windows settings security settings account policies password policy. I also have a windows 7 pro 32 bit in a windows server 2003 32 bit environment but unable to find the same setting using rsop but this windows 7 works fine. anyone can give suggestion what's the problem and what to do so I can change my windows 7 pro laptop password in a windows server 2008 environment? another thing, is it the right assumption that we can see all the policies setting in windows 7 whether it's in a windows server 2003 or 2008 environment? thanks.

Remote Desktop Printing With Color

Our ACCPACC administration software runs on an off-site dedicated hosted computer, running Windows 2003 Server with a completely different NT DOMAIN. We have many users connecting to that computer remotely to perform administrative tasks such as printing cheques, printing invoices, printing POs, packing slips and so on. Basically the setup is that we are all connecting using Remote Desktop Protocol (local computers are Mac OS.X, XP SP3, Vista and Windows 7). At our office we have a DOCUCOLOR 242 printer. When printing from the ACCPACC software, it prints to the local printer in our office. This is because we are using RDP features to connect printer ressources to the remote computer. This almost works now. I had to install the printer driver software on the remote 2003 Server for the printer sharing to work. Now, everyone is able to print black and white but color is out. NOTES: Normal users on that Windows 2003 server are running as part of a Group Policy Object to restrict what can be done. I took one of these normal users and gave him all domain administrator rights, no effect still B&W only. I took this account and moved it OUT of GPO policies, as a normal account instead, no effect still B&W only. It seems only MY account (which is domain administrator AND a normal account not part of the GPO objects) can actually print with color. This is the account that was used for installing the printer driver software. How can I manage to get everyone to print in color? Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Difference in performance: local machine VS amazon medium instance

I see a drastic difference in performance matrix when i run it with apache benchmark (ab) in my local machine VS production hosted in amazon medium instance. Same concurrent requests (5) and same total number of requests (111) has been run against both. Amazon has better memory than my local machine. But there are 2 CPUs in my local machine vs 1 CPU in m1.medium. My internet speed is very low at the moment, I am getting Transfer rate as 25.29KBps. How can I improve the performance ? Do not know how to interpret Connect, Processing, Waiting and total in ab output. Snow Leopard takes a long time to connect to Windows/Samba server

We run a very heterogeneous network here: There is some XP, Vista, 7, Leopard, Snow Leopard clients, and Windows 2003 (one remaining legacy app), 2008, and Linux servers. The main file server runs Ubuntu Linux and has been added to the Windows Domain and has been used for many years; SBS 2008 is the PDC (the 2003 and 2008 are on the domain also). In Leopard there were no problems at all authenticating to the file servers. We've upgraded one of the Leopard iMacs to Snow Leopard, though the same problem occurs in a new MBP which came with the newer OS as well as a clean install on another iMac. It does not matter whether connected through wired or wireless. In the Finder when clicking on the server - whether on first boot or after it is connected - it will display "Connecting..." for up to a few minutes before either generally working (if username/password in keychain) or displaying "Connection Failed" - at which time clicking "Connect As" and typing in the username/password will take some more time and eventually work. Sometimes it will display "Connecting..." indefinitely. (I've left it as long as 15 minutes before trying something else) Accessing shares on the the 2003 and SBS servers have the problem (so I don't think it's a Samba server issue). The Server 2008 Standard is connecting instantly at the moment. Accessing the share through an alias/stacks doesn't have this problem. Leopard and Windows clients still have no problem. I've searched Google but hasn't yielded any working result. How do I get rid of this delay?

Migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers - a few Questions/Issues

Ok so here's our setup: We have 2 Windows 2003 Domain Controllers. I am trying to replace them with Windows 2008 R2. The 2003 servers are named DC01 and DC02. The 2008 R2 servers are DC1 and DC2. I prepared the Windows Server 2003 Forest Schema for a Domain Controller that runs Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Then with both of the new servers up as member servers I ran dcpromo on DC1 using the advanced option and added it successfully to my existing domain. It's roles are GC, DNS and Active Directory Domain Services. I transferred The PDC Emulator, RID Pool Manager, and Infrastructure Master roles to DC1. The Schema Master and Domain Naming master are still on DC01. The first issue that I'm encountering is when I dcpromo the DC2 and select "Replicate data over the network from and existing domain controller" I select that I want to replicate from DC1 and I get the following error: Failed to identify the requested replica partner (dc1.xxx.org) as a valid domain controller with a machine account for (DC2$). This is likely due to either the machine account not being replicated to this domain controller because of replication latency or the domain controller not advertising the Active Directory Domain Services. Please consider retrying the operation with \dc01.xxx.org as the replica partner. "The server is unwilling to process the request. Is this because the Schema Master and Domain Naming Master roles are still on the old DC01? And if so, if I transfer Schema Master and Domain Naming Master roles to DC1 what is the risk or breaking my AD? I'm a little paranoid because this process HAS to be transparent. ANY down time or interruption will result in me getting a verbal ass kicking from my I.T. Director. Both of the new servers DNS point the the old DNS servers (DC01 and DC02) not themselves by the way.

AWS elastic load balancer basic issues

I have an array of EC2 t1.micro instances behind a load balancer and each node can manage ~100 concurrent users before it starts to get wonky. i would THINK if i have 2 such instances it would allow my network to manage 200 concurrent users... apparently not. When i really slam the server (blitz.io) with a full 275 concurrents, it behaves the same as if there is just one node. it goes from 400ms response time to 1.6 seconds (which for a single t1.micro is expected, but not 6). So the question is, am i simply not doing something right or is ELB effectively worthless? Anyone have some wisdom on this? Snow Leopard takes a long time to connect to Windows/Samba server

We run a very heterogeneous network here: There is some XP, Vista, 7, Leopard, Snow Leopard clients, and Windows 2003 (one remaining legacy app), 2008, and Linux servers. The main file server runs Ubuntu Linux and has been added to the Windows Domain and has been used for many years; SBS 2008 is the PDC (the 2003 and 2008 are on the domain also). In Leopard there were no problems at all authenticating to the file servers. We've upgraded one of the Leopard iMacs to Snow Leopard, though the same problem occurs in a new MBP which came with the newer OS as well as a clean install on another iMac. It does not matter whether connected through wired or wireless. In the Finder when clicking on the server - whether on first boot or after it is connected - it will display "Connecting..." for up to a few minutes before either generally working (if username/password in keychain) or displaying "Connection Failed" - at which time clicking "Connect As" and typing in the username/password will take some more time and eventually work. Sometimes it will display "Connecting..." indefinitely. (I've left it as long as 15 minutes before trying something else) Accessing shares on the the 2003 and SBS servers have the problem (so I don't think it's a Samba server issue). The Server 2008 Standard is connecting instantly at the moment. Accessing the share through an alias/stacks doesn't have this problem. Leopard and Windows clients still have no problem. I've searched Google but hasn't yielded any working result. How do I get rid of this delay?

rdp allow client reconnect without password prompt after several hours

Let me describe the setup first: client PC with several rdp sessions to local servers, all opened from saved rdp sessions with stored passwords, using the standard windows rdp client. several windows servers on the LAN, with varying server OS: windows server 2003, 2008, and even 2012 now. When I log onto my PC I open up rdp sessions to all those servers, and keep them open all the time for various reasons. Overnight the client PC is put into sleep or hibernate mode, thereby braking the rdp connections. On the next day when I wake the client PC and login again, the rdp sessions automatically try to reconnect to the servers, and this leads to the question: starting with server 2008 something apparently changed in the rdp server config, as all servers with 2008, 2008r2 and 2012 will prompt for the password in the rdp session, whereas the 2003 server rdp connections will re-establish without the password prompt. Apparently there is a timeout setting on 2008+ that, when exceeded, requires a reauthentication. Is there any way to setup the 2008+ servers to behave like 2003 did? I'd like the rdp sessions to reconnect without a password prompt even after a several hour disconnect.

403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. How do you get better than 1024x768 resolution? Just installed MS Server 2008 64bit on a Dell PowerEdge 64bit box (works OK - Previously running MS Server 2003 32bit) After install - gives a a max resultion of 1024x768 I want to change the reslution to 1280x1024 (Same LCD Worked OK on server 2003) When I down load a driver I get a messeage "Radeon 7000 does not recognise driver" Also have Have a new LG W1042 I'd like to use. I have installed a linux distro and I "think" it is vulnerable to kernel exploits. I have to update kernel but I need to know if it is really compiled in year 2003? How can I know if additional updates are made to the kernel? Linux gandalf 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Does also "smp" mean that it is safe from latest threats or something? Thank you.
