• How to re-do the hard disks in a WD Word Book Edition II ?

  I recently purchased a WD World Book II, a 2 TB one. I call it the "White Box". It has those 2 1TB drives, and they were in this RAID 1 config, only giving me about 1 TB. I could not delete the raid array, and I took the drives in a Linux box. But I also deleted the entire partitions of the disks, and I cannot even et the existing RAID array on this WD White Box. The drives are fine, but I cannot get them to work on the WD White Box. My goal was to get back to a real 2 TB storage space. If I cannot get those drives back in the White Box, I can re-use them elsewhere, but this would mean a waste of the firmware and network connection. After the fact, I read that, anyway, the network performance is rather poor. Thanks :-)

• How can I compact the VHD file with Ubuntu?

  I use windows server 2008r2 with role Hyper-V. The guest system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTC. It is situated on the dynamic virtual hard disk. I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

  I have the following problem: - I have a mails that are arriving in my mailbox - these mails contain a specific string in the body - what I want to do is: -- removing this string from the body -- then send this body to another mail adres (send, not forward) What have I already done: A. created a rule that activates the script in incoming messages that contain a certain string in the description This is the rule description: Apply to message with "Maileater" in the subject and on this computer only run "Project1.ChangeString" B. created the script with the following instructions: Public Sub ChangeString(MyMail As MailItem) Dim body As String body = MyMail.body body = Replace (body, "=====================================================", " ") MyMail.body = body MyMail.Save End Sub C. now I want to add in the script the instruction to send the body (or MyMail.body) to a specific mail adres (e.g. [email protected] with description "Support asked") after the replace of the string. is this possible? • re: 3ware raid 10 (4drive) suggested stripe size suggestions?

  looked around on the site but nothing really concrete on my question. i will have about 120GB of data total, files are made up of 5MB files, excel, word and about 25 .pst files that are about 1.2GB each. Yes they use .pst over network, even though it is not recommended this is legacy setup without issue so we will continue to support this for another year or so. I need to know what you think about a stripe size of 256kb for the raid 10 based on the above requirements. I did try and bench with these settings and it seems alright without any real issue, just trying to rule out anything i might of missed. thanks.

• KVM switching on the cheap

  I have a machine at home for my personal use. I also have a machine for work. I have a pair of DVI monitors. An ideal set up for a KVM switch. Sadly the cheapest switch I can find that will switch 2 DVI monitors is nearly £300. However, I can get, for just £40, a switch for a single monitor. Is there any reason why I couldn't employ 2 of these much cheaper switches? My thought was to have the keyboard, mouse and one of the monitors in one switch and just the 2nd monitor in the 2nd switch. Logically, I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work, but I have no real background to be able to say, definatively, whether or not it would. It it makes any difference, both machines are running Win7. Appreciate any thoughts. -- Stuart

• aligning truecrypt partition on 1.5TB 4kB sector drive

  hi, aligning partitions to start at real physical sector of ssds / stripped raids / 4kB drives is a 'good thing to do'. but i've run into a problems when trying to do it for a truecrypt partition that will contain ext3 on it. or so it seems. when drive is question is partitioned properly and formatted with ext3 i get very reasonable write speeds around 70-80MB/s, but when i put truecrypt and ext3 on the top of it write performance becomes very unstable and goes between 1-25MB/s with very high io-wait. on the same server i dont have any performance issues with ext3 on the top of truecrypt on regular 512B-sector 500GB sata disks. so my best guess is that iowaits are caused by misalignment but i cannot really find reliable information on how to calculate optimal partition beginning. i've tried to start it at 128 logical sector, i've also tried 8132 sector as suggested here but both gave me very bad and unstable performance. do you have any experience with similar setup? thanks!

• Unable to delete a directory from NTFS drive: "Access is deined"

  I'm running Windows XP Pro x64 SP2. I have a directory on an NTFS drive that was created by a Maven build. A subsequent build attempted to delete this directory and failed. I now get the error "Access is denied" whenever I try to do anything with that directory: change to it, delete it, rename it. This happens both in Windows Explorer and from a command prompt. The properties dialog in Windows Explorer doesn't even contain the Security tab. I created the directory, so I don't think this is truly a permissions issue. I've occasionally had this error happen in the past is well. I believe the error is misleading, but the question is: what is the real problem and how do I fix it?

• Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] the mail is forwarded to [email protected] my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to [email protected] and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan

• which server is best for me??

  I am looking for a best hosting service for my website. My website is a PHP MySQl driven site which hase got site scrapping for more than 10 websites and near about 8-10 API pursing and some about 150 mb dat file reading(from local hard drive), and also one rss pursing,Live graph from other sites, geo map from Google,Map api from Google and so on. one widget which real-time result for any one who chose the same. so my question is which is best option for me. actually I am considering softlayer cloud as they are pretty cheap and more facilities than rackspace. another option is a dedicated server which has 2 single core processor, 4GB ram and 250GB sata II. with 100 mbps uplink. so please tell me which will be the best option?? I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.

• Thunderbird's Grouped Inbox always shows all accounts

  I have four IMAP accounts "merged" into one using Thunderbird 2's "Grouped inbox" view. I want to take one of the four accounts out of the grouped view. It is a maintenance mailbox that contains a lot of status mails. Those mails tend to clog my "real" inbox. I am able to edit the Inbox folder using "Properties". In the list that comes up, it is possible to de-select the maintenance mailbox and everything works fine. However, if I restart Thunderbird, it will forget what I de-selected and use all four mailboxes again. Is there any way to make Thunderbird remember the change?

• The best software for users internet usage

  Hi, We are a small business using a Vigor 2820 as the internet router, and we'd like to install a software that could report any internet usage from our users. I already tried the "official" software made by Draytek called "SmartMonitor", but is reliability is a real issue as it doesn't seem to keep capturing packets after working 3 to 6hours (randomly), whereas Wireshark keeps capturing packets after that amount of time. As I'm really fed up with this tool, I'm looking for other solutions but I still want the same features: users statistics, websites ranking, users traffic, ... I already enabled the port mirroring feature, so it would be perfect if you could suggest me a port mirroring-based software (ideally freeware). I thought I had found the good one with Etherscout, but it just doesn't launch. I am even open to a tool that would "just" make some reports based on Wireshark captured files (*.pcap). • Intel cpu hyperthreading on or off for ibm db2?

  Has anyone ever done any database performance comparisons with hyper-threading enabled vs disabled? We are running ibm db2 and I'm curious if anyone has an recommendations for enabling hyper-threading or not. With hyper-threading enabled it makes it quite difficult to do capacity planning for cpu usage. For example. "With 8 physical cores represented as 16 "threads" on the OS and a cpu-bound workload, does that mean when your cpu usage hit's 50% you are actually running at 100%." What real benefits do I gain with leaving hyper-threading enabled on an intel server running DB2? Does hyper-threading help if you're workload is truly disk IO bound? If so, up to what percentage? These are the types of questions I'm trying to answer. Any thoughts?

  This is a Canonical Question about DNS (Domain Name Service). If my understanding of the DNS system is correct, the .com registry holds a table that maps domains (www.example.com) to DNS servers. What is the advantage? Why not map directly to an IP address? If the only record that needs to change when I am configuring a DNS server to point to a different IP address, is located at the DNS server, why isn't the process instant? If the only reason for the delay are DNS caches, is it possible to bypass them, so I can see what is happening in real time?

  I am looking for a solution to backup and consolidate important media from a couple Windows laptops and Mac laptop. I would like a solutions that based on open standards, so my data isn't trapped by proprietary formats and proprietary protocols. I would like the ability to switch clients or change providers in the future. For example, something like Jungle Disk plus S3 sounds like a great option.   We are thinking about purchasing 4 x EqualLogic PS6510X SANs (the Sumo boxes). Each has 48 x 600GB 10k SAS drives. They will be stacked to form a logical pool of storage (all in the same location). I understand that when you create a RAID group its done on a "per box" basis. So one box could be Raid 50, another Raid 10 etc. My question is, should I make one box a "performance" box ie Raid 10, and the other boxes "standard" ie Raid50? • Kanji characters appear as boxes

  i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

  I have a Server 2008 machine called OTTO I recently, by mistake, booted up an old machine, also called OTTO (the hardware was unstable, so the new one was set up to take it's place) I shut down the old machine, turned it off, and recycled it (it won't ever be back on) Now, whenever i try to log in to the real OTTO with the domain account (mydomain\Administrator) i get the following error: The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation What can I do to fix this? It doesn't appear in active directory any more I've added it, but I'm guessing this had no effect, due to a different SID I can log in as the local administrator however

• How to fill in the network line in the ubuntu interfaces config file?

  I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)
