• Programming languages with extensible syntax

  I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself?

• OpenGL Beginner question

  I'm new to OpenGL programming, but I can't find a good book to read or a tutorial, I've tried reading through the superbible or whatever its name is but it's kind of complicated to me. The tutorial at http://duriansoftware.com/joe/An-intro-to-modern-OpenGL.-Chapter-2.3:-Rendering.html is pretty ok but it doesn't cover what I need mostly, which is opengl math etc (such as projection matrix, view matrix, and so on). I'm fairly OK at C(++) (3+ years experience, I don't know if you would call that "good") What i basically want to do with OpenGL is, make a simple game (prefer 2D as a start and not 3D). Please suggest a good EBook to read and learn from.

Microsoft will not use this information to personally identify or contact you. • Is there an imperative language with a Haskell-like type system?

  I've tried to learn Haskell a few times over the last few years, and, maybe because I know mainly scripting languages, the functional-ness of it has always bothered me (monads seem like a huge mess for doing lots of I/O). However, I think it's type system is perfect. Reading through a guide to Haskell's types and typeclasses (like this), I don't really see a reason why they would require a functional language, and furthermore, they seem like they would be perfect for an industry-grade object-oriented language (like Java). This all begs the question: has anyone ever taken Haskell's typing system and made a imperative, OOP language with it? If so, I want to use it.

  I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ? Have the functions into a seperate file and include it at the top of the page when I need it. 1) This method seem to work for me, although that means i require more time to make out the functions.   I'm looking for a label to describe the practice of using human-based computation methods or other means of "faking" an algorithm for the sake of getting a product or demo off the ground quickly without spending the time to develop an technical/scalable/analytical solution? Eg: using Amazon Turk to count the number of empty tables in a restaurant. I'm also looking to learn more about this subject, but not sure what to search for. • What is the point to namespaces in branches in git?

  So I mainly use Mercurial for my projects and I decided to sit down and learn all Git's shenanigans to discover if I'm in the right side (at least for me). I'm learning that git uses namespaces for branches and I would like to know (in your experience) what is the point of namespaces?. In Mercurial I could just set the convention of naming branches like so: <branch name> //for "origin" branches <username>/<branch name> //for user branches I imagine that there is more to it than just the name (aside from avoiding naming conflicts), but what do I get out of this seemingly more complicated (not necessarily bad) model?

  I want have a script that I can give to friends which will add repositories and download files, install them without having to use command as they are not command line savey and have no desire to learn. I need to know how to get the script to prompt them for the root password to allow them to do some of these functions. How would I go about this? Please don't hate on them.. Getting them to start using Linux was a big step and I am just happy that they are attempting something new... and it was in the open source world..

• Basic/research RTS engine/model

  Does a basic/research RTS engine/model exist that can be used as a basis for further experimentation/research? I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. I'm aware of Spring Engine and Stratagus, but those are real game engines and may not be the best to experiment with and learn from. Ideally the docs for the model would answer questions like: How exactly do units move? (constant velocity? constant acceleration? constant force?) How is pathfinding handled? Does every grid cell become an A* graph node (may be expensive)? Does it consider threats? How are groups handled? (w.r.t pathfinding and movement) How is combat handled? I'm mostly interested in the low-level model details (for now), not the graphics etc. I've read a lot of the other quesions (and answers/references) tagged RTS but I haven't found my answer yet.

• How to gain understanding of large systems? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do you dive into large code bases? I have worked as a developer developing C/C++ applications for mobile platforms (Windows Mobile and Symbian) for about six years. About a year ago, however, I changed job and currently work with large(!) enterprise systems with high security and availability requirements, all developed in Java. My problem is that I am having a hard time getting a grip on the architecture of the systems, even after a year working with them, and understanding systems other people have built has never been my strong side. The fact that I haven't worked with enterprise systems before doesn't exactly help. Does anyone have a good approach on how to learn and understand large systems? Are there any particular techniques and/or patterns I should read up on?

• Are there any free embedable REPL interpreters for a website? [migrated]

  I am hoping to find a free REPL interpreter for a number of languages. I am starting a new web page to help developers learn with a number of tutorials. I want to embed an interpreter on the site so users can have a tutorial and interpreter side by side. I really like free interpreters such as the one at repl.it. However, I am unable to find a free/embeddable interpreter. I was hoping to avoid making one myself-- they seem tricky to make safely! Thanks!
