The application runs fine almost everytime, but I think running this piece of code when there is no internet connectivity or very poor internet connectivity (thereby no access to either of the webservices I have used) brings down the server. Something like this happened a few times and I think it was due to loss of internet connectivity but I am not sure what exactly is going on. [ By the way, feel free to use this piece of code. Makes 2 web service calls so don't use to too often in your application. Consider storing the results in a database.]

• What is the appropriate granularity in building a ViewModel?

  I am working on a new project, and, after seeing some of the difficulties of previous projects that didn't provide enough separation of view from their models (specifically using MVC - the models and views began to bleed into each other a bit), I wanted to use MVVM. I understand the basic concept, and I'm excited to start using it. However, one thing that escapes me a bit - what data should be contained in the ViewModel? For example, if I am creating a ViewModel that will encompass two pieces of data so they can be edited in a form, do I capture it like this: public PersonAddressViewModel { public Person Person { get; set; } public Address Address { get; set; } } or like this: public PersonAddressViewModel { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public string StreetName { get; set; } // ...etc } To me, the first feels more correct for what we're attempting to do. If we were doing more fine grain forms (maybe all we were capturing was FirstName, LastName, and StreetAddress) then it might make more sense to go down to that level. But, I feel like the first is correct since we're capturing ALL Person data in the form and ALL Address data. It seems like it doesn't make sense (and a lot of extra work) to split things apart like that. Appreciate any insight.

• GUnload is null or undefined using Directions Service

  I'm getting an error using Google Maps API V3 that I don't understand. My initial map displays just fine, but when I try to get directions, I get the following two errors: Error: The value of the property 'GUnload' is null or undefined, not a Function object Error: Unable to get value of the property 'setDirections': object is null or undefined I'm not using GUnload anywhere, so I don't understand why I'm getting that error. As far as the second error is concerned, it's as if something is wrong with the Directions service. I have validated JSON that im getting returned from server, so i know that is correct, however my javascript function is not doing anything with it. • Looking for: nosql (redis/mongodb) based event logging for Django

  I'm looking for a flexible event logging platform to store both pre-defined (username, ip address) and non-pre-defined (can be generated as needed by any piece of code) events for Django. I'm currently doing some of this with log files, but it ends up requiring various analysis scripts and ends up in a DB anyway, so I'm considering throwing it immediately into a nosql store such as MongoDB or Redis. The idea is to be easily able to query, for example, which ip address the user most commonly comes from, whether the user has ever performed some action, lookup the outcome for a specific event, etc. Is there something that already does this? If not, I'm thinking of this: The "event" is a dictionary attached to the request object. Middleware fills in various pieces (username, ip, sql timing), code fills in the rest as needed. After the request is served a post-request hook drops the event into mongodb/redis, normalizing various fields (eg. incrementing the username:ip address counter) and dropping the rest in as is. Words of wisdom / pointers to code that does some/all of this would be appreciated.

  I've created an address bean and I want to use it twice - once for street address and once for mailing address. • ASP.NET DynamicData: Whats happening during an update?

  I am using ASP.NET DynamicData (based on LINQ to SQL) on my site for basic scaffolding. On one table I have added additional properties, that are not stored in the table, but are retrieved from somewhere else. (Profile information for a user account, in this case). They are displayed just fine, but when editing these values and pressing "Update", they are not changed. Here's what the properties look like, the table is the standard aspnet_Users table: public String Address { get { UserProfile profile = UserProfile.GetUserProfile(UserName); return profile.Address; } set { UserProfile profile = UserProfile.GetUserProfile(UserName); profile.Address = value; profile.Save(); } } When I fired up the debugger, I've noticed that for each update the set accessor is called three times. Once with the new value, but on a newly created instance of user, then once with the old value, again on an new instance, and finally with the old value on the existing instance. Wondering a bit, I checked with the properties created by the designer, and they, too, are called three times in (almost) the same fashion. The only difference is, that the last call contains the new value for the property. I am a bit stumped here. Why three times, and why are my new properties behaving differently? I'd be grateful for any help on that matter! =)

• Getting a stream back from a .Net remoting service that is accessible with IP v4 and v6

  My company has an existing .Net Remoting service that listens on a port, fronting interfaces used by external systems. This all works great with IP v4 based communications. However, this service now needs to support both IP v4 communications and IP v6 communications. I have found info that the system.runtime.remoting section of the app.config should include two channels as follows: <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp6" port="9000" bindTo="[::]" /> <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp4" port="9000" bindTo="0.0.0.0" /> The above config file changes to the System.Runtime.Remoting config section will get the remoting service responding to non-stream functions on both ip v4 and ip v6. The issue comes only when attempting to get a stream back, used to upload or download large files. In this case, instead of getting a usable stream back, the following ArgumentException is thrown instead: IPv4 address 0.0.0.0 and IPv6 address ::0 are unspecified addresses that cannot be used as a target address. Parameter name: hostNameOrAddress Is there a way to modify the app.config (in the system.runtime.remoting section, or another section) so that the service will return a stream mapped to a real ip so the client can actually upload/download files while maintaining the ability to use both IP v4 and IP v6?

• Forms blank when rendering a partial when using a collection of objects. Help!

  Alright, I know my title is a little obscure but it best describes the problem I am having. Essentially, I have a list of users, and want to be able to edit their information in-line using AJAX. Since the users are showing up in rows, I am using a partial to render the data and the forms (which will be hidden initially by the ajax), however, when the rows are rendered currently only the last item has it's form's fields populated. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that all the form fields have the same id's and it is confusing the DOM. But I don't know how to make sure the id's are unique. Here is a small example: In my view: <%= render :partial => 'shared/user', :collection => @users %> My partial (broke down to just the form) note that I am using the local variable "user" <% form_for user, :html => {:multipart => true} do |f| -%> <%= f.label :name, "Name*" %> <%= f.text_field :title, :class => "input" %> <%= f.label :Address, "Address" %> <%= f.text_field :address, :class => "input" %> <%= f.label :description, "Description*" %> <%= f.text_area :description, :class => "input" %> <% end -%> When the html is rendered each form has a unique id (for the id of the user) but the elements themselves all have the same id, and only the last user form is actually getting populated with values. • Criteria for triggering garbage collection in .Net

  I've come across some curious behavior with regard to garbage collection in .Net. The following program will throw an OutOfMemoryException very quickly (after less than a second on a 32-bit, 2GB machine). The Foo finalizer is never called. class Foo { static Dictionary<Guid, WeakReference> allFoos = new Dictionary<Guid, WeakReference>(); Guid guid = Guid.NewGuid(); byte[] buffer = new byte[1000000]; static Random rand = new Random(); public Foo() { // Uncomment the following line and the program will run forever. // rand.NextBytes(buffer); allFoos[guid] = new WeakReference(this); } ~Foo() { allFoos.Remove(guid); } static public void Main(string args[]) { for (; ; ) { new Foo(); } } } If the rand.nextBytes line is uncommented, it will run ad infinitum, and the Foo finalizer is regularly invoked. Why is that? My best guess is that in the former case, either the CLR or the Windows VMM is lazy about allocating physical memory. The buffer never gets written to, so the physical memory is never used. When the address space runs out, the system crashes. In the latter case, the system runs out of physical memory before it runs out of address space, the GC is triggered and the objects are collected. However, here's the part I don't get. Assuming my theory is correct, why doesn't the GC trigger when the address space runs low? If my theory is incorrect, then what's the real explanation?

• Can't get findnext property of range class error

  I am trying to parse a report in Excel 2007. It is basically a report of accounting charge exceptions. The report has sections with a header for each type of exception. There are types of exceptions that are deleted from the report. I'm using a Do While loop to find each header and if the section needs to be deleted I have it do so. If nothing needs to be deleted the code works fine, but right after a section is deleted I get an "Unable to get the FindNext property of the Range Class" error. Here is my code: Sub merge_All_Section_Headers() ' Description: ' The next portion macro will find and format the Tranaction Source rows in the file ' by checking each row in column A for the following text: TRANSA. If a cell ' has this text in it, it is selected and a function called merge_text_cells ' is run, which performs concatenation of each Transaction Source header row and ' deletes the text from the rest of the cells with broken up text. • Mechanize form submit not going to the correct response page, no errors as to why. Something I'm doing?

  I threw this all in one controller for testing purposes. My code fills out the form correctly for adding a new address to your Amazon account. There are two buttons that submit this form, one takes you to add a new address which is what I don't want, and the other is just a Save & Continue input/image. When I submit the form via that button, as I do below, the form is still on the page, filled out as I have with my code. Inspecting the page titles, they're the same. There are no discernible errors that Mechanize or Amazon spit back. • learning C++ from java, trying to make a linked list.

  I just started learning c++ (coming from java) and am having some serious problems with doing anything :P Currently, i am attempting to make a linked list, but must be doing something stupid cause i keep getting "void value not ignored as it ought to be" compile errors (i have it marked where it is throwing it bellow). If anyone could help me with what im doing wrong, i would be very grateful :) Also, I am not used to having the choice of passing by reference, address, or value, and memory management in general (currently i have all my nodes and the data declared on the heap).
