I pressed the thin button in the back (which you have to press with a pen point or something similar, really slim), but haven't managed to make it work. The CPU, WLAN and power lights go on and remain still. The lights for the connected cables don't turn on...

  • Accessing two networks connected to gateway from behind the gateway

    I have a Windows XP machine acting as internet gateway. It is connected to two different networks, one, say LAN1, connects to internet and other, say LAN2, to outside LAN. My machine is sitting behind the gateway. I have set up internet connection sharing on LAN1 and can access internet on my machine but i can't access anything from LAN2. Everything looks okay, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get to this screen: I need to set up some excluded folders, since the backup media is a little smaller than the home folder. I need to exclude the replaceable 100 GB video directory.

  • Breaking the Outlook 2010 e-mail blue quote line for inline responses

    This has to be the most infuriating regression from Outlook 2003 to 2007. It also exists the same in Outlook 2010, as far as I can tell. When you reply to an HTML e-mail message in Outlook, the quoted text has a blue line down the side, and is usually at the bottom of the message: Now in Outlook 2003, when replying to HTML-formatted messages in Outlook, you used to be able to reply inline quite easily, by getting to the point in the quoted message you wanted to reply to, and pressing the 'decrease indent' button: Since Outlook 2007 (and 2010), they replaced the e-mail editor with Microsoft Word. This means the blue line is implemented in a different way; it uses a blue left border. This makes it tougher to break the line up. After much ado, I found a couple of pages that said that you could remove all formatting by pressing ctrl-Q, which would remove the blue line next to the cursor and allow inline replies: OK, not too bad on the face of it. I can live with that. But here's the kick in the teeth; try sending that mail. I'll send it to myself. What do I receive? This: Outlook 2010 reinstated the blue line, where I had removed it, upon my sending the e-mail! For God's sake! The two pages I linked to above don't seem to address Outlook's reinstating of the blue line upon sending. So, does anyone know how you can actually reply inline in Outlook 2010 (or Outlook 2007) e-mail without the blue line being reinstated? Before anyone says, I do not want to convert the message to plaintext, and I do not want to just indent replies and have to manually build the blue line myself. I want something like the Outlook 2003 behaviour; I reply, Outlook creates the blue line, and I can break it up with inline replies, send it, and my inline formatting stays. My hopes aren't high - Microsoft seem to have gone to some trouble to actively prevent inline replies here, for some reason - but I'd appreciate anyone's insights. Cheers!

  • All the Gear and No Idea: Suggestions for re-designing my home/office/entertainment network

    Help/ Advice/ Suggestions please: I have a load of kit that I love but which currently operate in disconnected, sometimes counter-productive way. Because I never really had a masterplan I just added these things one after another and connected them up in ad hoc ways. Since I bought my Macbook I've found I spend much less time on the MacPro that was until then my main machine. Perversely, as my job involves writing .Net software, I spend a lot of Mac time actually inside a Windows 7 VM. I stream media from the HP box to the PS3 and thus to the TV, but its not without its limitations/annoyances. We listen to each other's iTunes libraries but the music files are all over the place and it would be good to know they were all safely in one location (and fully backed up). I need to come up with a strategy that will allow me to use all the kit for work, play (recording live music, making tunes, iMovie work), pushing/streaming media to the TV and sharing files with my other half (she uses a Windows laptop and her iPod touch). Ideally I'd like to be able to work on any of the machines and have a shared homedrive that was visible to all machines so all my current files were synced up wherever i was. It would be great if I could access everything securely and quickly over the web. I'd also like to be able to set up a background backup process. The kit list thus far: Apple MacPro 8GB/3x250GB RAID0 + 1TB Apple MacBook Pro 13" 8GB/250GB - I spend a lot of my work time on a Windows 7 VM on this. Crappy Acer laptop (for children's use - iPlayer, watching movies/tv files) HP Proliant Server 4GB/80GB+160GB+300GB Sun Ultra 10 2 x 80GB (old, but in top-notch condition) PS3 160GB iPod Classic 2 x 8GB iPod Touch Observations: Part of the problem is our dual use of Windows and OS X - we can't go for a pure NT style roaming profile. Because the server is also used for hosting test/beta applications and a SQL Server db, it can't be dedicated to file serving. The two Macs really could do with sharing a roaming profile or similar. I'd love to be able to do something useful with the Ultra 10. My other half has been trying to throw it away for over five years now and regularly ask what function it serves in my study :-( I've got no shortage of 500GB external USB hard drives iMovie files are very large and ideally would be processed on a RAID system. Apple's TimeMachine isn't so great. If anyone could suggest all or part of a setup that would fulfil some of my requirements I'd be very grateful. I am willing to consider purchasing one or two more bits of kit (an Apple TV and a Squeezebox have been moted by friends) if they will help make efficiencies rather than add to the chaos and confusion.   • Choosing a very basic Linux distro with minimal boot time?

    I've had Ubuntu for a year now, like it but it doesn't match my needed configuration for my old laptop. So... I am using Linux mainly for webapps so I don't care much about user interface. What I need is a distro which is small enough to install on a SD memory card (or USB) since I am removing the hard drive, all my data is in the cloud. I also want it to have as short boot time as possible. I tried Puppy Linux and it seems ok but it had preinstalled looots af small apps I don't need, I would really like to have a distro with minimal preinstallations and add them on my own. So what are my choices and why would you recommend these?

  • RTL8192SU Linux Issue Installing Driver

    OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2 [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# any help appreciated. and just encase I'm running currently Mandriva Spring 2010 Free

    I have just purchased a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard, and it has dual Realtek RTL8111D gigabit LAN ports. I also have an Intel PRO/1000 MT PCI gigabit network card lying around from an old desktop. I've heard that Intel PCI-E network cards will often outperform Realtek, Marvell, or other non-Intel on-board network adapters, but my question is will the PRO/1000 MT PCI card outperform a single Realtek RTL8111D gigabit network adapter in terms of transfer speed, or should I keep what I have/buy a PCI-E Intel network adapter?

    I've gone through the following steps: Loaded up iTunes 10 on a Windows7 machine Went to iTunes store and subscribed to a podcast Selected sync podcasts Clicked sync However, it always hangs on step 1 of 3 - it just gives a status of 'Backing up' and never progresses past that. I've waited over an hour 3 times now. I'm getting so infuriated with this iTunes software; I'm afraid I might damage my PC in frustration ;-) Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Gnu screen with local scrollback buffer?

    I'm using a remote server over a very slow and unreliable network connection. So, I want to use gnu screen in order not to lose what I'm doing whenever I get disconnected. But I want a local scrollback buffer, on my local computer, so that scrollback doesn't have to go across the network, which is incredibly slow. Is there either something like gnu screen, but with a local scrollback buffer; or else a way of using gnu screen with a local scrollback buffer?

  • Block all but http traffic on a network interface

    I've got two network interfaces on an Ubuntu machine which go out to two different networks but both have internet gateways. I need to limit it so that any outgoing http requests it makes (ie through wget) only go through eth0 and all other traffic goes through eth1. I dare say the solution might have something to do with iptables but I've no experience with it so would appreciate all help.

    With LaTeX, I can do: \documentclass[10pt]{article} \usepackage[symbol*]{footmisc} \begin{document} One\footnote{f1} Two \footnote{f2} Three \footnote{f3} Four \footnote{f4} \end{document} And get *, †, ‡, § ... as consecutive footnote markers. MS-Word has this feature too - an alternative footnote numbering scheme. How can I achieve the same with LibreOffice? PS - Shouldn't the OpenOffice and LibreOffice tags be merged?

  • Usefulness of packets in wireshark? SSDP protocol, rather than HTTP?

    I used to be able to filter my wireshark packets to get useful information from them. However, with my current configuration on OSX, all of the HTTP traffic is coming through as the SSDP protocol and is generally being unhelpful. Why is this? Actually, it seems that packets on my own system that should be HTTP are coming throuhg as HTTP, but packets from other machines that should be HTTP are coming through as this protocol.

  • How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

    I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.
