• Can KVM roll back changes to Virtual Disks automatically?

  I'm currently using VirtualBox on my Linux server to run a small Windows guest OS. I've configured its main virtual hard drive as what VBox calls "Immutable" - meaning that any changes to it are written into a differencing image that is discarded when the system reboots. Can KVM do something similar? I've read about snapshots via "savevm", "loadvm" but I believe that's saved states, not differencing images. What I ultimately want is a VM with two drives: one reverts on each reboot, one keeps its changes. Ideally, the unchangeable drive image should be stored with only read access granted to the user running KVM.

• Can a virtual mikrotik box bridge a hyper-v internal network with a hyper-v external network?

  I am trying to set up a Mikrotik router as a transparent firewall on my network. I got the machine working on a hardware MT box, but my boss wants the MT virtualized. I have been trying the set up where my virtual windows box talks to the Mikrotik via private or internal network on the Hyper-V host. I can get the two machines to talk, but as soon as I set up a bridge on the MT, all traffic ceases between the two. Is it possible to create a bridge for this purpose (having the MT silently in front of my firewalled server)? I could really use some help.

• How do I access files inside a Wubi virtual ext4 Ubuntu partition from within Windows?

  I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi on a PC that has Windows XP and Windows 7 installed. I was working in it for a while and everything is just fine. However, when I booted back into Windows 7, I couldn't figure out a way to access the files I had created or downloaded into the Ubuntu partition. They're in a virtual disk called root.disk in my C:\ubuntu\disks. Is there a way I can mount this vhd into Windows or at least browse the contents and extract what I need?

• Can vCenter 4 authenticate and authorize against a virtual directory server??

  Hi I am looking into Identity managment in our environment. We currently use Active Directory and Sun's Enterprise Directory server (6.3). I was wondering if I used the Virtual Directory Server of the Enterprise Directory server, would we be able to point the vCenter clients to this Directory service for authentication and authorization rather than at the AD source. The reason for this is that we have more users we want to add to the management role of this server but not all are in AD, a fair number are in the Sun LDAP v3. directory. Thanks in advance Ian

• Virtual PC "The page cannot be displayed" error connecting to iis7.5 site on Win7 host.

  I setup virtual pc with the Windows XP IE6 VHD to test a site on Windows 7 host. I created a loopback adapter connection on the host. I have several sites on IIS 7.5, I'm able to connect to all of them except one. And it's the site I need to test... I get "The page cannot be displayed" error. The site loads fine from the host(Windows 7). I've made sure the permissions match that of the other sites that do load. I've recreated the application in IIS manager. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

  I am running vsftpd with Virtual Users (managed through a MySQL db). Each users home/default directory is owned by vsftpd:vsftpd. I need to give a user read/write permissions to some website files, owned by apache:apache so they can make some changes. I did a bind mount for the web directory to a directory in the ftp user's home/default directory. When logging in, the user is not able to write to the web folder, unless I set files to 777. Is it possible to set this up with making the directory and it's files 777? The web directory needs to be apache:apache in order for apache to work with it.

• Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin.

  I have a 1 server with 8GB RAM and 2xQuadcore Processors. It currently has the Xen XCP installed on it, and centos6.2 x64 running on a virtual machine. I have a server control panel software that I want to use and it allows the administration via a web interface for Openvz machines. My questions are: Would this be considered bad practice? Would there be a big performance hit? Should I avoid this all together or am I going about it all wrong? Thank you in advance.

  I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

So is this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/www.example.com better than this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com I would assume I'd need to a2ensite either www.example.com or example.com. Depending on whichever method used? This might be a a fairly basic question But, I have no one else to ask. And, want to do it right.

  I'm setting up a new Tomcat 7.0.33 server, and I'm looking for a simple way to include a directory full of virtual host definition XML files for configuration. I've found that it's possible to do XML includes from server.xml, but this requires a line in server.xml for each file, and is no less work than just having the entire config right in server.xml. I'm looking for something similar to Apache's Include directive. The end result I'm looking for is to have a directory I can drop an XML file into that Tomcat will pick up on the next restart, without having to modify server.xml. Is there a way to do this? [duplicate] 5 answers How can I know if my provider is giving me a dedicated physical server or if I'm getting virtual servers? The provider is from an other country so I don't have the chance to go and see the servers by myself, all of them have linux and they're managed by SSH. All the hire has been done by internet or phone. Are there any commands, dirs to analyze or a way to get this info? They of course tell me that the servers are physical, but when they make some support or hardware/software upgrade or that kind of stuff doesn't take a long. For example, when I ask for a new one with specific requirements at the end they give me more infrastructure than the one I asked for. Of course no one gives extra things without an extra price. This is my code. What I'm doing wrong here? Changing entity properties works fine. When I change photo FileName for example it gets updated in DB and in user.Photos. var photo = SelectById(id); Context.DeleteObject(photo); Context.SaveChanges(); var user = GetUser(userName); // the photo I have just deleted is still in user.Photos also tried this but getting same results: var photo = user.Photos.First(); Context.DeleteObject(photo); Context.SaveChanges();

  I saw a lot of recommendations claiming that for hibernation the swap partition/file must be at least as large as the main memory. This makes no sense to me. Lets assume I have 8 GB of main memory and 8 GB swap area and want to hibernate: case 1: I'm using 4 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is unnecessarily large. case 2: I'm using 8 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is just right. case 3: I'm using 12 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is too small. The outcome is: A swap area of size equal to the memory size is sufficient for hibernate IFF it doesn't get used for swapping at all. So what is the reason behind the claim that you need at least as much swap area as main memory for hibernate to work? I know that virtual memory gets used for caching too, and that the cache may be simply discarded, but what happens to hibernation if a program allocates 12 GB of virtual memory (given the above memory and swap sizes)?

You should also have a virtual machine with a clean, typical installation of BizTalk Server and all of its prerequisites. Sysprep will run on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with SP1. Description Sysprep creates a VHD of a BizTalk Server 2010 installation (including the operating system and all prerequisites) for quick deployment on other virtual machines. An image created using Sysprep will choose a new computer name in order to join the domain the first time it starts.   I have a .NET assembly (a dll) which is an API to backup software we use here. It contains some properties and methods I would like to take advantage of in my Powershell script(s). However, I am running into a lot of issues with first loading the assembly, then using any of the types once the assembly is loaded. The complete file path is: C:\rnd\CloudBerry.Backup.API.dll In Powershell I use: $dllpath = "C:\rnd\CloudBerry.Backup.API.dll" Add-Type -Path $dllpath I get the error below: Add-Type : Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. • makefile pathing issues on OSX

  OK, I thought I would try one last update and see if it gets me anywhere. I've created a very small test case. This should not build anything, it just tests the path settings. Also I've setup the path so there are no spaces. The is the smallest, simplest test case I could come up with. This makefile will set the path, echo the path, run avr-gcc -v with the full path specified and then try to run it without the full path specified. For instance its trying to use the system as not the one in the correct path. update - Just to be sure, I'm adding the output of my ls command too so everyone knows the file exist. Also I've added a make info target to the makefile and showing that output as well.
