  While programming in C# using Visual Studio 2008, I often wish for "automatic" code generation. If possible, I'd like to achieve it by making my MSBuild solution file call out to Rake, which would call Ruby code for the code generation, having the resulting generated files automatically appear in my solution. Here's one business example (of many possible examples I could name) where this kind of automatic code generation would be helpful. In a recent project I had an interface with some properties that contained dollar amounts. I wanted a second interface and a third interface that had the same properties as the first interface, except they were "qualified" with a business unit name. Something like this: public interface IQuarterlyResults { double TotalRevenue { get; set; } double NetProfit { get; set; } } public interface IConsumerQuarterlyResults { double ConsumerTotalRevenue { get; set; } double ConsumerNetProfit { get; set; } } public interface ICorporateQuarterResults { double CorporateTotalRevenue { get; set; } double CorporateNetProfit { get; set; } } In this example, there is a "Consumer Business Unit" and a "Corporate Business Unit". Every property on IQuarterlyResults becomes a property called "Corporate" + [property name] on ICorporateQuarterlyResults, and likewise for IConsumerQuarterlyResults. Why make interfaces for these, rather than merely having an instance of IQuarterlyResults for Consumer and another instance for Corporate? Because, when working with the calculator object I was building, the user had to deal with 100's of properties, and it is much less confusing if he can deal with "fully qualified" property names such as "ConsumerNetProfit". But let's not get bogged down in this example. It is only an example and not the main question. The main question is this: I love using Ruby and ERB for code generation, and I love using Rake to manage dependencies between tasks. To solve the problem above, what I'd like to do is have MSBuild call out to Rake, and have Rake / Ruby read the list of properties on the "core" interface and then generate the code to make all the dependent interfaces and their properties. This would get triggered every time I do a build, because I'd put it into the MSBuild file for the VS.NET solution. Has anyone tried anything like this? How did it work out for you? What insights can you share about pros, cons, tips for success, etc.? Thanks!

• How to change order in ordered+persisted collection?

  I just need to change order of items in a (previously persisted) ordered collection... I tried simply passing the re-arranged collection to a setter: after committing a transaction the collection is gone. Then I tried to clear() the existing collection and addAll() afterwards: clear() makes persistent manager to mark all the elements as deleted. (But obviously I would like to be able to work with the collection items in the very transaction.) (The collection is not in a default fetch group, so I tried the above also with the named fetch group added into the fetch plan. No luck.) This must be the most stupid question, but I ran out of ideas and I'm stuck here two days already. I swear I googled. :(

  Can someone tell me, when you for example update, insert, delete.. should you then close it like $stmt->close(); ? i checked php manual and don't understand what close() actually does. LIMIT 1"); $stmt->execute(array($email)); $stmt->close(); Next part of my question is, if as an example i had multiple update queries in a transaction after every execute() for each query i am executing should i close them individually ? ... because it's a transaction not sure i need to use $stmt->close(); after each execute(); or just use one $stmt->close(); after all of them ?   How can I gain access to Core Data objects from Javascript/WebKit on Mac OS X? I've made custom subclasses of NSManagedObject for each of my tables, with accessors defined using @property/@dynamic for each attribute, but neither isSelectorExcludedFromWebScript: or isKeyExcludedFromWebScript: is called for any of them, so Javascript just stops when I try to access any of the attributes. It returns 'undefined' if I access it as a property (eg business.name ) and javascript execution stops if I access it as a function (eg business.name() ).

  Hi, i have two Entities, "Parent" and "Child", that are linked through a bidirectional one-to-many relationship with the cascade attribute set to "all". When adding a Child object to the Parent children collection using the code below, i can't get the ID of the persisted child until i commit the transaction: Parent p = (Parent) session.load(Parent.class, pid); Child c = new Child(); p.addChild(c); // "c" hasn't an ID (is always zero) However, when i persist a child entity by explicitly calling the session.save() method, the ID is created and set immediately, even if the transaction hasn't been committed: Child c = new Child(); session.save(c); // "c" has an ID Is there a way to get the ID of the child entity immediately without calling the session.save() method?   I have the I2C (SMBus) working properly in this uC and have a VB GUI which can communicate over USB (using USBXpress) and do I2C transactions from the uC to a separate IC. The problem is that I am having the uC poll a register on the IC every 1s. When I do an asynchronous GUI I2C transaction, every once in a while, I believe it collides with the polling I2C transaction and all the I2C data gets shifted at the GUI (i.e., register 0x00's data shows up on register 0x01) . The I2C data in the IC looks correct (by spying on the I2C bus with a LA). What exactly is happening and how can I fix this?

  As per the documentation link given below: When a lock wait timeout occurs, the current statement is not executed. The current transaction is not rolled back. (Until MySQL 5.0.13 InnoDB rolled back the entire transaction if a lock wait timeout happened. You can restore this behavior by starting the server with the --innodb_rollback_on_timeout option, available as of MySQL 5.0.32. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/innodb-parameters.html#sysvar_innodb_lock_wait_timeout Does it mean that when a lock wait timeout occurs, it compromises the transactional integrity? "roollback on timeout" was the default behaviour till 5.0.13 and I guess that was the correct way to handle such situations. Does anyone think that this should be the default behaviour and the user should not be asked to add a parameter for a functionality that is taken for granted?

  Hi guys! Let's assume we have the following method in the business layer. What's the best practice to tell the UI layer that something went wrong and give also the error message? Should the method return an empty String when it was OK, otherwise the error message, or should it throw another exception in the catch code wrapping the caught exception? If we choose the second variant then the UI should have another try,catch which is too much try,catch maybe. • Collections not read from hibernate/ehcache second-level-cache

  I'm trying to cache lazy loaded collections with ehcache/hibernate in a Spring project. When I execute a session.get(Parent.class, 123) and browse through the children multiple times a query is executed every time to fetch the children. The parent is only queried the first time and then resolved from the cache. Probably I'm missing something, but I can't find the solution. Please see the relevant code below. I am seeing an intermittent (~1-2%) failure (returned node is null) of this selectSingleNode request even though the requested node is in the xml being searched. I know there are some gotchas associated with using text()= in xPath and was wondering if there was a better way to format the xPath string for this type of search.

  In straight mysql script I'd do transactions like this: START TRANSACTION; SELECT @A:=SUM(salary) FROM table1 WHERE type=1; UPDATE table2 SET summary=@A WHERE type=1; COMMIT; i'm a little confused about how transactions work in PDO. It looks like there are beginTransaction() and commit() methods - so I'm not sure are these just convenience wrappers around staright SQL? or are they doing some more job behind the doors? In other words - are these examples below essentially the same? example 1: $dbh->exec( 'START TRANSACTION' ); //...do some db work here... $dbh->exec( "COMMIT" ); example 2: $dbh->beginTransaction(); //...do some db work here... $dbh->commit();
