• Beginners PHP / mySQL question

  I'm brand new to PHP & MySQL, and one function I'm creating needs to access a large table or database. I've created the database and it's currently in a MySQL table, which I'm accessing with no problem. The table is 11,000 rows in length, with 8 columns (all text less than 8 characters long) - it's static, and will never change. Without getting too particular, my users will hit a button which will trigger scripts to access the data, say 500 times or more. So in general would it be better practice to include all of this data in a big 'switch' or 'if... then' conditional right in my scripts, rather than opening and accessing the database connection hundreds, or maybe even thousands of times? It just seems like that might be a bottleneck waiting to happen. Thanks!

• Why isn't this message subject encoded properly? (php mail)

  I use this code to send an email: $headers="MIME-Version: 1.0"."\n"; $headers.="Content-type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8"."\n"; $headers.="From: $name <$email>"."\n"; mail($to, '=?UTF-8?B?'.base64_encode($subject).'?=', $text, $headers, '[email protected]'); If I use special characters Å Ä Ö from the swedish alphabet, they are not encoded properly, so they turn up like ö for ö. However, this doesn't happen if I change the $to variable to a gmail account email, then they are shown correctly. Anybody got any idea? Thanks UPDATE: When I echo $name, the name is displayed correctly, in utf8, with all special chars nicely shown.

• Makefile won't copy .o to obj/ and target to bin/ folders

  I'm trying to write a Makefile which will copy its target and objects to bin/ and obj/ directories, respectively. Yet, when I try to run it I get the following error: nasm -f elf64 -g -F stabs main.asm -l spacelander.lst ld -o spacelander obj/main.o ld: cannot find obj/main.o: No such file or directory make: *** [spacelander] Error 1 Why is this happening? Update I noticed when I posted the error that it was due to white spacing errors. After taking care of those, I still get the new error I replaced with the old one I mentioned prior. What is this??   I don't understand this with Scala hasmaps: How do I create a value or update one if it does not exist? I am tryng to count the number of characters in a list of Strings. I've tried this code but it doesn't work : def times(chars: List[Char]): List[(Char, Int)] = { val map = new HashMap[Char, Int]() chars.foreach( (c : Char) => { map.update(c, map.get(c) + 1) }) } I understand the returning type isn't correct. But is my foreach loop wrong? Is there a prettier way to write it?

• CString a = "Hello " + "World!"; Is it possible?

  I'm making my own string class and I was wondering if there's any way to replace the compiler behaviour around " characters. As I said in the title I'd like to make it so that CString a = "Hello " + "World!"; would actually work and not give a compiler error telling that it can't add 2 pointers. My string class automatically converts to char* when needed and thus writing printf(a) would not break the code. I'm sure this is a rather weird question but if it's possible I'd really like to know how to do it. Thank you very much

  Alright I'm currently lost on a particular assignment I have for a class. I've seen many examples of this app but none of them see to help my problem is as follows: Write a Sub procedure "DisplaySquare" to display the solid square. The size should be specified by the integer parameter "size". The character that fills the square should be specified by the string parameter "fillCharacter. Use a For...Next statement nested within another For...Next statement to create the square. The outer For...Next specifies what row is currently being displayed. The inner For...Next appends all the characters that form the row to a display string. So it should come out like as follows: if a user enters "8" and "#" ######## ######## ######## ######## ######## ######## ######## ######## Any help would be appreciated.

• How can I write fast colored output to Console?

  Hello world! I want to learn if there is another (faster) way to output text to the console application window using C# .net than with the simple Write, BackgroundColor and ForegroundColor methods and properties? I learned that each cell has a background color and a foreground color, and I would like to cache/buffer/write faster than using the mentioned methods. Maybe there is some help using the Out buffer, but I don't know how to encode the colors into the stream, if that is where the color data resides. This is for a retrostyle textbased game I am wanting to implement where I make use of the standard colors and ascii characters for laying out the game. Please help :)

• Finding a integer number after a beginning t=

  I have a string like this: 33 00 4b 46 ff ff 03 10 30 t=25562 I am only interested in the five digits at the very end after the t= How can I get this numbers with a regular expression out of it? I tried grep t=..... but I also got all characters including the t= in the beginning, which I would like to drop? After finding that five digit number, I would like to divide this by 1000. So in the above mentioned case the number 25.562. Is this possible with grep and regular expressions? Thanks for your help.

  I am trying to hash or encrypt a record's ID for URL's such that people can't view various records simply by guessing different integer ID's. Essentially, my URL's would be something like this: /plans/0AUTxwoGkOYfiZGd2 instead of /plans/304. Would the best way to do this just be to use SHA-1 to hash the plan's id and store it in a hashed_id column for plans? Then, overwrite to_param and add a finder to find by hashed_id? How do you ensure that the characters generated are 0-9, a-z, or A-Z? Thanks!

  Hello. What I'm trying to do: have pretty URLs in the format 'http://domain.tld/one/two/three', that get handled by a PHP script (index.php) by looking at the REQUEST_URI server variable. In my example, the REQUEST_URI would be '/one/two/three'. (Btw., is this a good idea in general?) I'm using Apache's mod_rewrite to achieve that. Here's the RewriteRule I use in my .htaccess: RewriteRule ^/?([a-zA-Z/]+)/?$ /index.php [NC,L] This works really well thus far; it forwards every REQUEST_URI that consists of a-z, A-Z or a '/' to /index.php, where it is processed. Only drawback: '?' (question marks) and '#' (hash keys) seem to still be allowed in the REQUEST_URI, maybe even more characters that I've yet to find. Is it possible to restrict those via my .htaccess and an adequate addition to the RewriteRule? Thanks!

  My task is to search for a string or a pattern in a list of documents that are very short (say 200 characters long). However, say there are 1 million documents of such time. What is the most efficient way to perform this search?. I was thinking of tokenizing each document and putting the words in hashtable with words as key and document number as value, there by creating a bag of words. Then perform the word search and retrieve the list of documents that contained this word. From what I can see is this operation will take O(n) operations. Is there any other way? may be without using hash-tables?. Also, is there a python library or third party package that can perform efficient searches?

  I Have a script, getting text from DB and post it on other DB. Problem is, if I have a Text lngen then 840 Words, I can't call this page. Get an error about "Not Found" or "Connection brocken" or what ever. In FF i get no error, only blank page. I found out the Problem is in lenght of the query i send... but how can i fix it??? My it be the Problem, if a query is longer then 6000 Characters?

I am not an ASP guy, but rather C++ So what I want to do is delare a string, check the first 4 characters and if it is 'http' do something, if not, something else. • When open-sourcing a live Rails app, is it dangerous to leave the session key secret in source contr

  I've got a Rails app that's been running live for some time, and I'm planning to open source it in the near future. I'm wondering how dangerous it is to leave the session key store secret in source control while the app is live. If it's dangerous, how do people usually handle this problem? I'd guess that it's easiest to just move the string to a text file that's ignored by the SCM, and read it in later. Just for clarity, I'm talking about this: # Your secret key for verifying cookie session data integrity. # If you change this key, all old sessions will become invalid! # Make sure the secret is at least 30 characters and all random, # no regular words or you'll be exposed to dictionary attacks. • Reading line by line from a file in C

When I do this, random characters are printed out but not what is in the file. The text file is located in the same folder as the makefile.   I pine for the days when, as a C programmer, I could type: memset( byte_array, '0xFF' ); and get a byte array filled with 'FF' characters. So, I have been looking for a replacement for this: for (int i=0; i < byteArray.Length; i++) { byteArray[i] = 0xFF; } Lately, I have been using some of the new C# features and have been using this approach instead: Array.ForEach<byte>(byteArray, b => b = 0xFF); Granted, the second approach seems cleaner and is easier on the eye, but how does the performance compare to using the first approach?
