• Can TFS 2010 be installed onto a single server and in a Workgroup (not AD)

  Hi folks, currently, we're using TFS2010 at our office and we're about to move. Part of that move is a split of teams. Our team will get their own servers. So we need to build our own TFS server and add our current projects to that. Right now, our TFS server exists on TWO servers - one for TFS and one for our Continuous Integration .. i think that's a build controller or something. That really suxs for us - having TWO servers instead of one for all our source control. We love CI and how it works (after the massive massive pain it was to get our VS2010 solution to CI + web Deploy) ... but it does work. So - can we do this with ONE server? Also, we don't want to have an Active Directory. Will this also work?

• Windows service only gets called when Visual Studio is attached to process

  I've created a simple windows service in C# using Visual Studio 2010. It uses a TcpListener and socket to listen for messages on a given port. This worked absolutely perfectly when my laptop had Windows Vista on it. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 and re-installing my service it only responds if I'm attached to the process and debugging in Visual Studio 2010 - at which time it behaves as expected. I've tried running the service under my (administrator) credentials and setting the exe to run as administrator. I've also checked "Allow service to interact with desktop" when it was running under the Local System account. I'm testing using both a test console app and an Adobe Air application - both with the same results. Are there some specific permissions that I need to allow the service to be called?

• MS Project 2010 Filter and Highlights

  I'd like to know if there is a way to highlight dates that differs from one another. I have two columns "Baseline Finish Date" and "Re-forecast Finish Date" and I would like to highlight the dates that for each task, is different in those columns. Meaning the tasks that suffered a re-forecast due to other circumstances, and does not equal to the original dates. I also would like a filter that does the same thing as above, showing only this different date tasks.

• Visual Studio scratch disk behavior

  I don't know if this feature exists, but I'd like a way to control Visual Studio 2010's scratch disk behavior (other than completely turning off intellisense). Right now it creates a massive .sdf file in the project folder (50MB+), and then it goes and creates an IPCH folder with 60MB+ of precompiled headers. All that's well and good while VS is running, but after it exits, I really would like the disk back. Is there a way to configure vs 2010 to Use the same location (%AppData%\VSScratch) for scratch disk files (so its easier to blow it away?) Automatically delete .sdf /ipch on exit? I know they don't delete them because its faster to startup.. but if you delete them yourself, startup time isn't that much increased..

  I've struggled with this one for a whole day, so here is both the problem & solution: After profiling an ASP.NET application on Windows 7 (x64), I exited Visual Studio (possibly a crash) and installed some updates which required a reboot. When I loaded back up the ASP.NET Web Application in my Visual Studio Solution was dimmed out, and the Web & WAS services turned out to be stopped. When I tried starting Windows Process Activation Service, I got the error "parameter is incorrect".

• Werid formating in Word 2010

  A few months ago, while writing a paper, I copied some paragraphs created in another computer into a different computer. I guess the formatting was different. Please see the following image: I noticed that a strange formatting has also been imported. I thought it would go away when I select all and choose a format. But the problem did not go away. Now, when I am trying to finish the paper, the weird formatting still remaining. Does anyone have any solution? Also, how to make sure that when we copy something from a file with different Styles, we retain the destination style definitions. EDIT I would prefer a solution where I do not have to re-do the formatting manually.

  Its been a long time since I blogged.  Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels.  However, here is a quick post with a few updates.  Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed.  We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010.   With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and the corresponding Silverlight, WCF RIA bits etc., and getting them all to work together.  Now that, both VS 2010 and Silverlight have RTMed, I wanted to post a quick update on the necessary downloads. Visual Studio 2010 RTM can be downloaded from MSDN Visual Studio site  If you are doing Silverlight 4 development with Visual studio, then you can download the Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio  Then, if you are developing with WCF RIA Services, you can download the WCF RIA Services RC 2 for SL4 and VS 2010 And finally, if you want to use WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET you would require the Domain DataSource control.  Also, to use some of the additional Service Utility tools, you would require the WCF RIA Services Toolkit.  You can download the same from WCF RIA Services Toolkit April 2010 Once you have installed all the above, you should be able to see the following in your add-remove programs WCF RIA Services v1.0 for Visual Studio 2010 (Version 4.0.50401.0) WCF RIA Services Toolkit (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight 4 SDK (Version 4.0.50401.0) Also, you would need the Expression Blend 4 for designing the apps for Silverlight 4.  You can download the release candidate from here Thats it.  You are all set for development with Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services. • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

• ODI 11g – How to Load Using Partition Exchange

  Here we will look at how to load large volumes of data efficiently into the Oracle database using a mixture of CTAS and partition exchange loading. The example we will leverage was posted by Mark Rittman a couple of years back on Interval Partitioning, you can find that posting here. The best thing about ODI is that you can encapsulate all those ‘how to’ blog posts and scripts into templates that can be reused – the templates are of course Knowledge Modules. The interface design to mimic Mark's posting is shown below; The IKM I have constructed performs a simple series of steps to perform a CTAS to create the stage table to use in the exchange, then lock the partition (to ensure it exists, it will be created if it doesn’t) then exchange the partition in the target table. You can find the IKM Oracle PEL.xml file here. The IKM performs the follows steps and is meant to illustrate what can be done; So when you use the IKM in an interface you configure the options for hints (for parallelism levels etc), initial extent size, next extent size and the partition variable;   The KM has an option where the name of the partition can be passed in, so if you know the name of the partition then set the variable to the name, if you have interval partitioning you probably don’t know the name, so you can use the FOR clause. In my example I set the variable to use the date value of the source data FOR (TO_DATE(''01-FEB-2010'',''dd-MON-yyyy'')) Using a variable lets me invoke the scenario many times loading different partitions of the same target table. Below you can see where this is defined within ODI, I had to double single-quote the strings since this is placed inside the execute immediate tasks in the KM; Note also this example interface uses the LKM Oracle to Oracle (datapump), so this illustration uses a lot of the high performing Oracle database capabilities – it uses Data Pump to unload, then a CreateTableAsSelect (CTAS) is executed on the external table based on top of the Data Pump export. This table is then exchanged in the target. The IKM and illustrations above are using ODI 11.1.1.6 which was needed to get around some bugs in earlier releases with how the variable is handled...as far as I remember.

• Does an ESEUTIL defrag of an Exchange store also perform an integrity check/repair on it?

  Earlier this morning, store.exe fuzzled up in one way or another, which necessitated a restart of our Exchange server. It came back online with no errors or problems, all the transaction logs replayed successfully, and all the stores mounted as normal. To me, it was just one of those random crashes; however, our consultant suspects it was caused by corruption in one of the stores. Perhaps he's correct, since he has far more experience than me, but that's not the point. To fix the suspected errors, he's planinng to run an ESEUTIL defrag (via PerfectDisk) to fix them, which he claims will also fix any errors present. From what I understand, defrag, verify, and repair are 3 separate actions, and a defrag does not imply any kind of integrity check. Is this correct? Are there any dangers of running a straight-up defrag on a database that might be corrupt? Edit: Here's the first error in the event log, which indicated the start of the problems we were having. • Why does outlook 2013, after initial setup, always fail to connect to an Exchange server/always ask for a password?

  After installing Outlook 2013 configuring it to connect to an exchange server (details about which, e.g., version, etc., I do not know how to provide) was stressful and the user used outlook without issue for a session. The next time outlook is started this error (Re. subject) occurs. The answer to this question solves the issue, or explains why it is happening (i.e., no one could provide a solution). It is only after outlook is closed and re-opened that it will not connect again to the server. • Deploying war files in tomcat6

  I am using tomcat5.5 for a long on ubuntu servers 8.10 and 9.10 and '/usr/share/tomcat/webapps/' is the path where I place my .war files and access them on the browser over network. On a sytem I've installed tomcat6 and I'm failing to find that where do I place my .war file of tomcat6's webapps. I checked deploying war under /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/ and the war file is extracted and I think this should be the location but I could not access the page when I tried http://serverip:8080/myapp. I could access the default page properly when I navigate to http://serverip:8080. The same war file is working fine on tomcat servers which were not installed from apt repository. • "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" windows XP, outlook 2007, connect to exchange using HTTP

  Hey, I can't connect to an exchange server using windows XP and outlook 2007, using the "connect anywhere over HTTP" process, it has been working until recently and the user reports no recent changes to his environment. The error is "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" It will prompt me for the username and password which I can enter, then it will give the errorm however this only happens when I delete the account and enter all details for the excahnge server again. The client computer that is unable to connect using outlook can connect to the HTTPS mail service and login send/receive fine. Nobody else has reported issues. making a test environment with a clean install of XP and outlook 2007 gives the same error, but using windows 7 and outlook 2007 connects perfectly fine everytime. I also removed all passwords using control keymgr.dll which didnt help. Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated, at this point nothing I've tried from technet or google works <_<

  Sendmail supports a feature called 'plussed users'. Once enabled, emails sent to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] are automatically delivered just like mails to [email protected]. There is no need to register or set up these 'plus suffixes'. The user can just use them and set up client-side filtering rules on his own. Does Exchange support a similar mechanism? If so, how to enable it? Note that I don't want answers about other means of filtering, e.g. spam/junk filtering, server-side or client-side rules, email aliases/addresses that are configured explicitly and so on.

• How can I change the subject of messages on an Exchange server automatically?

  I want to do something more than just normal mail - folder rules; I want to put a layer in front of my exchange server that lets me, for example, rewrite subjects into a more readable form. I get automated messages whose subject format makes them almost useless. Changing the emitting software is not going to happen, so I need to do something client side. I'm interested in anything that would allow me to do this, either on a mac, or on an older linux distro. Preferably the latter, and preferably in a way that I can turn on and forget about.

• Outlook + Exchange 2007: it is possible to rid of local OST files?

  I am looking for a solution which would allow to use a convenience of Outlook as a mail client app while at the same time have no PST or OST files on a local computer. Even in 'non-caching' mode Outlook creates an OST file where it downloads everything from the Exchange server. OWA does not create any local files (except cookies I believe) but lacks some of the nice features Outlook has. Would it be feasible to place OST files on a network share? Maybe the solution exists for some other client+server pair?

• Moving to an outside Exchange provider - How to create new Outlook profile on multiple PCs?

  Following an acquisition we are switching from our local Exchange to an outside provider. I need to change account settings / create new profile so that users are able to access their new mailbox, and I hate the idea of doing it manually on every single client. I have tried quick and dirty solution with copying profile information from Registry on one computer to the other, hoping that I could fix user info later. Quite obviously, this didn't work: Outlook recognized the profile, I could select it at the application startup, but there the fun ends - the profile was corrupt. I couldn't change settings in Mail settings on Control panel, either. Didn't find any Group policy solution. Is there any application, script or other solution, that would help me save time commuting from one PC to the other and typing the same info over and over again?

• Managing MS Exchange server-side email rules on Mac OS X?

  Has anybody found an easy way to manage server-side rules from Mac OS X? Here's a brief list of what I know doesn't work: Entourage 2008 - it supports client rules, but not server rules. No good, there are certain actions that should happen before I open my laptop or check my email on my iPhone. Apple Mail - same as Entourage, but at least I don't get as frustrated since, unlike Entourage, this isn't a Microsoft product. Web mail (aka Outlook Web Access) - perhaps you can manage rule in the fancy version which Exchange serves to IE, but not with the browsers available on a Mac. I manage this now by launching a VMWare virtual machine running Windows XP and Outlook. I don't count that as an easy way. Update, post release of Office 2011 Does MS Outlook 2011 have the ability to manage server-side rules? Update, post installation of Office 2011 No. Outlook 2011 doesn't have this ability. I've already removed my account from Outlook and switched back to Apple Mail and iCal

• Internal Outlook clients prompted for OWA login when only accessing local internal Exchange server?

  Hope someone can help with this one. Scenario is an internal Exchange 2003 server. OWA front end server in the DMZ. OWA logins work fine, with SSL configured. Over the last week (3 times so far) when an internal person opens their Outlook and then tries to open an email with JPG attachments they are prompted for the webmail login. Why? Even if they enter their valid webmail OWA login it fails and reprompts once for each attachment. Once they get through the multiple login prompts, they can double-click to open the attachments, but they are all blank. Any ideas on what could cause this? Why would someone accessing an email from an internal Outlook client get prompted for details of the OWA/webmail server login?

  Exchange 2007 uses direct DNS for all outgoing mail. Mail that is sent from our public IP (1.2.3.4 - this is the IP of my mailserver) is delivered to the spam folders for providers such as Comcast and yahoo. Currently, our SPF looks like this: v=spf1 ip4:1.2.3.4 mx a:mail.domain.com ?all MX: mail.domain.com.(10) The reverse DNS entry on our ISP is mail.domain.com for our IP The banner HELO response from our server is <220 mail.domain.com Our IP address is NOT blacklisted anywhere, and the Cisco Senderbase gives us a score of Good What is the reason our mail doesn't look legit?
