• Automatically minifying attribute/element names when using XmlSerializer

  When serializing a C# class using XmlSerializer, the attributes/elements representing the properties of the class will have the same names as they do in the source code. I know you can override this by doing like so: [XmlAttribute("num")] public int NumberOfThingsThatAbcXyz { get; set; } I'd like the generated XML for my classes to be as compact as possible, but obviously still capable of being automatically deserialized on the other side. Is there a way to have these names minified as much as possible without having to manually think of and annotate everything with a short string? The resultant XML being easily human readable isn't a concern.

• How many parameters in C# method are acceptable?

  I am new to C# and have to maintain a C# Application. Now I'v found a method vaving 32 Parameters (not auto-generated code). From C/C++ I remember the rule of thumb "4 Parameters". It may be an old-fashioned rule rooting back to old 0x86 compilers, where 4 Parameters could be accomodated in registers (fast) or on stack otherwise. I am not concerning about performance, but I do have a feeling, that 32 parameters per functions are not easy to maintain even in C#. Or am I completly not up to date? What is the rule of thumb for C#? Thank you for any hint!

  I need to draw a circle onto a bitmap in a specific colour given in Hex. The "Brushes" class only gives specific colours with names. Is there a way of doing this? The exact problem: I am generating KML (for Google earth) and I am generating lots of lines with different Hex colours. The colours are generated mathematically and I need to keep it that way so I can make as many colours as I want. I need to generate a PNG icon for each of the lines that is the same colour exactly.

• Font-face, Raphael and IE8

  I am desesperatly trying to get some google font faces to work with Raphael (SVG / VML rendering JavaScript library) on IE8. At first i tried the google fonts code. My second try has been to download and convert the fonts to host my own more complete css. Now the fonts show in the html part of the page (inside a modified bootstrap nav dropdown), but it does not work in the VML canvas (generated by Raphael). • How can I save the schema of a SQL Database to a file?

  I'm writing a software application in C#.Net that connects to a SQL Server database. My C# project is under SVN version control, but I'd like to include my database schema in the SVN repository as well. An answer to a previous question of mine suggested storing the scripts to generate the database in version control. Is there a way to automatically generate these scripts from an existing database? I'm very new to SQL Server, but I noticed in management studio that the SQL commands to create a table can be generated automatically by right clicking on the table and clicking "Script Table As". Is there an equivalent command that would work with the entire database?

  There are many SO questions (e.g. here and here) about how to do server-side scrubbing of Markdown produced by the WMD editor to ensure the HTML generated doesn't contain malicious script, like this: <img onload="alert('haha');" src="http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/srpr/logo1w.png" /> This doesn't affect the WMD client's preview box. I doubt this is a big deal since if you're scrubbing the HTML on the server, an attacker can't save the bad HTML so no one else will be able to see it later and have their cookies stolen or sessions hijacked by the bad script. But it's still kinda odd to allow an attacker to run any script in the context of your site, and it's probably a bad idea to allow the client preview window to allow different HTML than your server will allow. StackOverflow has clearly plugged this hole. How did they do it? [NOTE: I already figured this out but it required some tricky javascript debugging, so I'm answering my own question here to help others who may want to do ths same thing]

• Database for Importing NUnit results?

  I have a large set of NUnit tests; I need to import the results from a given run into a database, then characterize the set of results and present them to the users (email for test failures, web presentation for examining results). I need to be tracking multiple runs over time, as well (for reporting failure rates over time, etc.). The XML will be the XML generated by nunit-console. I would like to import the XML with a minimum of fuss into some database that can then be used to persist and present results. We will have a number of custom categories that we will need to be able to sort across, as well. Does anyone know of a database schema that can handle importing this type of data that can be customized to our individual needs? This type of problem seems like it should be common, and so a common solution should exist for it, but I can't seem to find one. If anyone has implemented such a solution before, advice would be appreciated as well.

• Can I Always debug multiple instances of a same object that is of type thread with GDB?

  program runs fine. When I put a breakpoint a segmentation fault is generated. Is it me or GDB? At run time this never happens and if I instantiate only one object then no problems. Im using QtCreator on ubuntu x86_64 karmic koala. UPDATE1: I have made a small program containing a simplified version of that class.   I need to develop a java desktop application which sends queries to a search engine in order to obtain the very first highest ranked pages (Example: the first 4 pages only). Some heavy processing needs to be performed on the retrieved pages, so the time between a query and another won't be less then a minute. I would like to know whether there is any web search API for java, suitable for my situation, i.e. which allows the use of automated queries? (since in my case, the queries are generated programatically, and not through user interaction) I have checked Google's AJAX Search API and also Yahoo's Search Boss, however they only allow queries triggered by direct user interaction.

  I have a bare-bone express application, exactly the one that is created with the express command. I have installed socket.io and attached it to my server, like this: var app = express(), server = http.createServer(app), io = io.listen(server); server.listen(8000); Now, I also have the routes files, which is called like this: app.get('/', routes.index); Inside this module I have the following function: exports.index = function(req, res){ socket.emit('news', { message: "foo" }); }; This obviously leads to a 500 reference error, because the routes file is an exportable module, and obviously has no idea what the socket is, as it is located in the app.js file. Is there a way I can access this socket object from this, or any other file? Please note that it is attached to the express generated app. extra: what about getting/setting session data? • Can I combine atom feeds from seperate resources into one?

  I have two resource for which I would like to generate feeds; they are called podcasts and posts. The problem is that when I include the auto_discovery_link in my templates, I have to add one for each of the two atom feeds that I've generated. The reason why this is a problem is that there are now two feeds for users to choose from, and most people probably won't realise that they need both so will only pick one. Is there a way to combine atom feeds from different resources into one atom feed? Like application.atom or something? I'm using builder to generate the feed.

• Huge AS 3.0 Export Frame

  I am creating a very simple flash animation with no code or complex effects, just text and simple tweens (Flash CS5) But I have problems reducing the size of my swf. From the generated size report, it looks like it has to do with fonts and/or exported actionscript classes. The frame with AS 3.0 Classes is over 100K, and even though I am only using one fonts, the same characters are embedded/exported multiple times My questions are: Do embedding of mixed TLF/Classic text (or mixing other text properties, spacing/kerning etc) require the same characters to be embedded twice? Do text transformations on TLF text (rotation and different transformations not available in classic text) require embedding of ("internal") AS3 classes that will increase the size of the .swf? (even though none of these classes are explicitly used by me, there are no scripts in the fla project) I have tried removing all the text instances one by one, and at one point, the swf is reduced to only 5-6K, but I am not able to pinpoint exactly what causes the ballooning of the swf

• Do Hibernate table classes need to be Serializable?

  I have inherited a Websphere Portal project that uses Hibernate 3.0 to connect to a SQL Server database. There are about 130 Hibernate table classes in this project. They all implement Serializable. None of them declare a serialVersionUID field, so the Eclipse IDE shows a warning for all of these classes. Is there any actual need for these classes to implement Serializable? If so, is there any tool to add a generated serialVersionUID field to a large number of classes at once (just to make the warnings go away) ?

As some needed plugins are generated using GMF and EMF, the build workflow must be something like this: SVN Check-out Invoke Generation Run Tests Build all Publish update-site Over the last couple of weeks, i played around with PDE Headless Build and Buckminster. Anyhow i still got problems with both and can't decide on which i should spent my effort. So what would you prefer? What experience you made? • SQL Server 2005 drop column with constraints

  Hi ! In Sql Server 2005 I have a column with a "DEFAULT" constraint. I'd like to create a script that drops that column. The problem is that is returns me that error : Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object 'DF__PeriodSce__IsClo__4BCC3ABA' is dependent on column 'IsClosed'. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN IsClosed failed because one or more objects access this column. I couldn't find an easy way to drop a column and all its associated constraints (only found big scripts that look into system table... there MUST (!!) be a "nice" way to do that !). And as the DEFAULT constraint's name has been randomly generated, I can't drop it by name. Thanks for your help.

  I have a small command line tool and after running it, I'd like to display the text output in a way that's easy for someone to copy/paste and save it or email it to someone else. Copy/pasting from a command prompt is not done in the standard way, so I don't want people to have to copy/paste from there. Saving the file to disk is possible, but the folder where the tool is located may not have access rights so the user would have to configure the output file location (this may be too tricky for some users). I was thinking of launching notepad with some text in it, generated from the command line tool. Is this possible? Any other suggestions?

• Trying to get simple jquery animations on a site I created in Dreamweaver

  Hey guys, another question. I'm trying to do some basic jQuery stuff for my final project. I'll be using it to modify my already existing site created in Dreamweaver a few months ago. However, no matter how I source the framework, it just won't take regardless of whether I host my own copy or link to someone else's like Google's. I'm including my jQuery function calls within my already existing .js file that includes some auto generated functions. I also tried creating a new .js specifically for my jQuery functions and still nothing. I realize this is vague, but any tips? Do I need another framework for jQuery to work off of to make animations like .fadeIn() or .slideDown()? Thanks guys and gals!

  I'm using testng to run selenium based tests in java. I have a bunch of repeated tests. Generally they do all the same except of test name and one parameter. I want to automate generation of it. I was thinking about using factory. Is there a way to generate tests with different name? What would be the best approach to this? • Accessing a control in asp.net content page through Javascript

  Hi, I have a form in my content page for which I am doing some client side validations via Javascript. The Javascript behaves as expected if I place the JS code directly in the content page. But if I place the JS code in it's own file and try accessing that from the content/master page (through the script tag's src attribute), I get a run time error when the validation function in JS being called. To be specific, I get the below error. Microsoft JScript runtime error: Objected expected/required at this line - document.getElementById('<%=txtemailId.ClientID %').value txtemailId is in the content page. Javascript code is placed in validation.js and accessed via master page. The reason I guess is that when .net is parsing the files, it is unable to substitute txtemailId.ClientID with the client side value that would be generated later on. So, how should one go about it?
