  • web services, J2EE, spring, DB integration project ideas- maybe data mining related?

    Hey guys, I am a graduate CS student (Data mining and machine learning) and have a good exposure to core JAVA (3 years). I have read up a bunch of stuff on Design patterns J2EE Web services( soap and rest) spring and hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff (over my free time of corse) to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + svn, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just wanna build this stuff to learn so I dont really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus (fits with my research) but absolutly not necesary (since this project is more to learn to do large scale software developement)

  • How do you do a keyword search the Services.msc (mmc) window in Windows 7?

    When you want to run a service, you have very limited capabilities, in all current Windows versions, as far as I can tell. I usually start Services by typing "services.msc" into the Start-Run box, on most versions of Windows, this works. I know how to click the "Name" column in the MMC view of Windows Services. If you know what the first few characters of a service name is, you can usually sort by the name, and type the prefix to scroll the list down (find Windows Search for example). This seems pretty weak to me, so I spent some time searching the interwebs for tools that do a better job of managing services. Usually I have a keyword that I know "fooWare" might be the keyword, and I need to find the (usually badly named) service and start it and stop it. This is often WAY too hard. The best I could do is "NET SERVICES" from the command line, and maybe add a grep in there, but that doesn't list every service, only a few of them. And the MMC snap-in in Win7 now has an Export List button, exporting to csv text file feature which I have used from time to time, to export and then search. I have thought of writing my own tool. I'm hoping a better "service manager" utility exists out there that sysadmins use. I'd like a search box at the top right corner, kind of the same way that the Add-Remove-Programs dialog in Win7 and Vista has a search facility. Does such a services utility exist out there?

    I have two instances of SQL Server: Server1 (SQL Server 2008) Server2 (SQL Server 2005) I am executing a stored procedure from Server1 which references tables on Server2. It is working fine in my test environment: Server1 runs Vista SP2, SQL Server 2008; Server2 runs Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005. However, it is not working in the production environment: Server1 runs Vista SP1, SQL Server 2008; Server2 runs Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005. The error message I receive is: OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "Server2" returned message "No transaction is active.". Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 21 The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "Server2" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

  • Reported error code considered SQL Injection?

    SQL injection that actually runs a SQL command is one thing. But injecting data that doesn't actually run a harmful query but that might tell you something valuable about the database, is that considered SQL injection? Or is it just used as part to construct a valid SQL injection? An example could be set rs = conn.execute("select headline from pressReleases where categoryID = " & cdbl(request("id")) ) Passing this a string that could not be turned into a numeric value would cause Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d' Type mismatch: 'cdbl' which would tell you that the column in question only accepts numeric data and is thus probably of type integer or similar. I seem to find this in a lot of pages discussing SQL injection, but don't really get an answer if this in itself is considered SQL injection. The reason for my question is that I have a scanning tool that report a SQL injection vulnerability and reports a VBScript runtime error '800a000d' as the reason for the finding.

  • Is MS Reporting Services suitable for stand-alone reports?

    Hello all: I work for a ISV. Our product can use both SQL Server and Oracle as its back-end server. It includes a number of reports (currently in Crystal). We are investigating moving to Micrsoft Reporting Services, but I'm beginning to think that it's a bad idea. We want for our reports to look and feel as though they are a part of our application, and we will not require SQL Server (the customer can choose Oracle). Although I see the reporting services supports a stand-alone mode (RDLC), the boundry between what requires SQL server and what doesn't looks extremely ambiguous. (example, the stand-alone report builder appears to require SQL Server, most of the documentation appears to be part of SQL Server's documentation) It looks to me like if I want to keep my application DB-agnostic, I had better steer clear of Reporting Services. Have I missed the boat here?

    I have a webservice with a method which is called via a xmlhttprequest object in my javascript. The method accepts a datetime parameter which is subsequently converted to a string and run against the database to perform a calculation. I get the value from m_txtDateAdd and send off the xmlHttprequest <asp:textbox id=m_txtDateAdd tabIndex=4 runat="server" Width="96px" Text="<%# Today %>"> </asp:textbox> which has a validator attacted to it <asp:CustomValidator id="m_DateAddValidator" runat="server" ErrorMessage="Please Enter a Valid Date" ControlToValidate="m_txtDateAdd">&#x25CF;</asp:CustomValidator> My webmethod looks something like this [WebMethod] public decimal GetTotalCost(DateTime transactionDate) { String sqlDateString = transactionDate.Year+"/"+transactionDate.Month+"/"+transactionDate.Day; I use sqlDateString as part of the commandtext i send off to the database. Its a legacy application and its inline sql so I don't have the freedom to set up a stored procedure and create and assign parameters in my code behind. This works 90% of the time. The webservice is called on the onchange event of m_txtDateAdd. Every now and again the response i get from the server is System.ArgumentException: Cannot convert 25/06/2009 to System.DateTime.   • BlueTooth not working on my HP Probook 4720s

    the blue tooth on my ubuntu 11.10 does not work. When i try to ad a device it scans indefinitely and never find anything. Wireless is working perfeclty and with windows 7 it is detected. As i read somewhere , the bluetooth is not listed in the usb devices.   • Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 does not install

    I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services. When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid".     Hello, I have purchased a dedicated server from a reputable Hosting company. They only have Windows Server 2008 OS installed on it and NO Sql server. Server Configuration is Intel Dual core Processor with 2GB of RAM and 100GB HDD. I wanted to host my web services on that server which will be using the MS SQL Server 2005 at the backend.There are multiple web services and each using a different Database. Microsoft has CAL basis Licensing , Which I understand is based on number of users accessing the database directly ( I may be wrong ) . But my users will be accessing the webservice and no direct connection to the database as such. Yes but the number of users accessing the web server cannot be known and is not under my control. Which Licensing is best suited for this kind of setup ? I don't need analysing and BI services right now ,but i may want to upgrade that in future may be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

  • How to Get Current Weather via Web Services

    I am attempting to get the current weather given a zip code or a set of latitude/longitude coordinates. It appears that best practice to do this (and how NOAA does it) is to get the XML feed for a weather station. Example: http://www.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/KEDW.xml The only problem is that NOAA doesn't provide a good way to find the closest weather station given a zip code or coordinates and I did not see any hosted web services out there that will provide this mapping. Does anyone know of any web services to get the nearest weather station given a zip code or coordinate input? If not, does anyone have any great solutions to look into that provide similar information as NOAA does but takes in a zip code or coordinates?

    Hi, I am about to re-release my website that i have transformed into a SilverLight Site, and was wondering if it is worth while updating the web service that it hosts into a WCF Service. The Service doesn't do too much at the moment, but i will be growing it fairly substantially. I have read a few articles on the differences between asmx web services and WCF Services and can't really see the benefits of WCF, but i am probably very wrong. Could anyone advise of the advantages of WCF and if is worth while me making the move (on the basis that you know it's a small service at the moment, but will be growing). Thanks

  • Modifying ChangeSet in RIA Services

    Hi, I am using RIA Services Beta 2 with Linq2Sql and SL3. In my SL3, I have a datagrid where I can do some mappings of data (Updates, Inserts and Deletes). I override the Submit method when SubmitChanges() is called. In the submit method in the domain service, I do some validation. If a validation fails for a particular ChangeSetEntry in the ChangeSet, a ValidationErrors is added. Then I call the base.Submit(changeSet). So, if the changeset has 3 entities and one of the entities results in validation error, the other 2 entities are also rolled back. It looks like, RIA Services does an implicit transaction and hence it either submits all 3 or none even if 2 out of 3 does not have any validation error. Is there a way for the RIA service, to prevent rollback of the valid entities and only invalidate the ones that has validation failed. Inputs will be appreciated. Thanks Mohit

    I have a table in SQL Server 2005 with hundreds of rows with HTML content. Some of the content has HTML like: <span class=heading-2>Directions</span> where "Directions" changes depending on page name. I need to change all the <span class=heading-2> and </span> tags to <h2> and </h2> tags. I wrote this query to do content changes in the past, but it doesn't work for my current problem because of the ending HTML tag: Update ContentManager Set ContentManager.Content = replace(Cast(ContentManager.Content AS NVARCHAR(Max)), 'old text', 'new text') Does anyone know how I could accomplish the span to h2 replacing purely in T-SQL? Everything I found showed I would have to do CLR integration. Thanks!

  • RIA Services: Inserting multiple presentation-model objects

    I'm sharing data via RIA services using a presentation model on top of LINQ to SQL classes. On the Silverlight client, I created a couple of new entities (album and artist), associated them with each other (by either adding the album to the artist's album collection, or setting the Artist property on the album - either one works), added them to the context, and submitted changes. On the server, I get two separate Insert calls - one for the album and one for the artist. These entitites are new so their ID values are both set to the default int value (0 - keep in mind that depending on my DB, this could be a valid ID in the DB) because as far as I know you don't set IDs for new entities on the client. This all would work fine if I was transferring the LINQ to SQL classes via my RIA services, because even though the Album insert includes the Artist and the Artist insert includes the Album, both are Entities and the L2S context recognizes them. However, with my custom presentation model objects, I need to convert them back to the LINQ to SQL classes maintaining the associations in the process so they can be added to the L2S context. Put simply, as far as I can tell, this is impossible. Each entity gets its own Insert call, but there's no way you can just insert the one entity because without IDs the associations are lost. If the database used GUID identifiers it would be a different story because I could set those on the client. Is this possible, or should I be pursuing another design?

    The type or namespace name 'Resources' does not exist in the namespace 'MyWebProject.Web' (are you missing an assembly reference?) C:\Users\...\MySecondProject\Generated_Code\MyWebProject.Web.g.cs I am having some problems trying to add a second SL client project to my (Ria services) SL Business Application. It has to do with the way the shared Resources files on the Web project are linked to from my new SL client project (the SL client project that was generated by the Business App template works fine). The same problem was brought up in the SL forums but copying the Web folder from my existing SL client doesn't seem to work. How can I add a second SL client project using RIA services to the solution of an existing SL Business Application without these problems over shared resources? Should I avoid the Business Application solution template for solutions with multiple SL clients since it seems to presume only a single client app will be sharing the resource files?

  • RIA Services Localization, where to place Resource Files

    I have the following Solution: SomeProject.Ria (non Silverlight code) SomeProject.Ria.Silverlight (Silverlight light code, namespace is still SomeProject.Ria) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices (RIA Services Domain Service) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices.Proxies (RIA Services Silverlight Generated Code) SomeProject.Shell (Silverlight Applicaiton) SomeProject.Web (Web Application) I would like to use Resource Files for my Annotations on the meta data class in SomeProject.Ria.MyServices. The format for that appears to be: [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessageResourceName="ThisFieldIsRequired", ErrorMessageResourceType(MyResource))] Which project does MyResource belong in? (Assuming that someday I need to support other culture files). Also the use of the string in here really seems to breed room for error, is it possible to do something like this and still achieve localization, or does this just get compiled into the meta data? If not, how can I get round the resource name being a string? [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessage=MyResources.RequiredMessage)]
