• net-snmp snptranslate dosnt work for my MIB (snmpget does work)

  I add my own MIB module to net-snmp. I put my Mib txt file under - '/usr/local/share/snmp/mibs' I see that if i change net-snmp files their the change is reflected , so this mibs are loaded correct. It seems that it not load my MIB file from there. When i run snmptranslate on my Mib like this: snmptranslate .1.3.6.1.4.1.8077 I get: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.8077 My MIB def: TEST-MIB DEFINITIONS ::= BEGIN IMPORTS MODULE-IDENTITY, enterprises FROM SNMPv2-SMI; testMib MODULE-IDENTITY DESCRIPTION "First draft" ::= { enterprises 8077} testMibObject OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= {testMib 1} END

• EC2 out of space on root disk, moving it to ephemeral

  I am spawning a few test servers on ec2 that happen to be m1.larges. I am using these test servers for load balancin testing. Anyways, most of the servers I have used before have been backed by EBS, but these instances (ubuntu 11.04) obviously come with a lot of ephemeral space located @ /mnt. What I noticed that is happening is I am running on space on the root disk. I am trying out this tutorial http://www.turnkeylinux.org/docs/using-instance-storage moving my /home + /usr directories to /mnt and then remounting them. This works except it does not survive a reboot. Am I missing something here or is this tutorial not completely correct. How do I make space on my / drive so I can do stuff and survive re-boots.

  I have set my auditd rules to log when the system time is changed However, our servers are VMs and thus have problems with the time drifting out. We needed to solve this issue so we used a VMware tool to regularly synchronize the time. • Worth it to move /var to physical disk vs logical?

  Brief question about partition layout. I use an SSD for /, /boot, /usr, & /home partitions. I'd like to move /var to a mechanical disk to minimize writes to the SSD. I'm mainly concerned about maximizing drive life rather than maximizing performance (although I obviously wouldn't want to cripple my server). My mechanical disks consist of two drives sharing LVM, and a third used for nightly rsync backups. I also have a bunch of old 2.5in hard disks lying around. My question is, should I simply create a new LVM volume '/var' on my primary data store, or would it be worth the increased energy consumption (in terms of maximizing the lifetime of the LVMed drives) to install a low volume 2.5in disk to use just for /var? On a more general level my question is about the trade offs of placing OS mounts on the same physical volumes as my data. Thanks for any help!

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

• How to add LDAP user to existing local group in RHEL?

  I'm attempting to add some of our LDAP users to a locally defined group on our RHEL server, however I get an error stating that the LDAP user is not found in /etc/passwd. What would be the best way to allow LDAP users to be added to local groups? My feeling is that this must be done manually. I could edit: /etc/group and add the LDAP group to the list. Would that be ideal? • Applescript cannot find sed during application install

  I am attempting to install an application, but the installer fails with the following error message: sh: sed: command not found and there is an Edit and OK button in the dialog, so I click the Edit button which launches the AppleScript Editor to show me the script that is executing. Running it from within the Editor doesn't work either. The first line of the script with sed is set currdir_modified to do shell script ("echo " & currdir & " | sed 's/ /\\ /g'") I went to the terminal to make sure sed was available, and it is, in /usr/bin. This sounds like a path problem, but I am not sure where to go from here. What can I do to further troubleshoot or solution this issue? I have successfully installed this app on another mac running the same OS X version, so it is specific to my mac and the application's support is not providing any more help because it is my mac's problem, not theirs.

• Setting the Timezone with an automated script

  I'm writing scripts to automate setting up new slicehost installations. In a perfect world, after I started the script, it would just run, with no attention from me. I have succeeded, with one exception. How do I set the timezone, in a permanent (survive reboot) and sane (adjust for standard and daylight savings time, so no just forcing the date) ... manner that doesn't require input from me? Currently, I'm using dpkg-reconfigure tzdata This doesn't seem to have any way to force parameters into it. It demands user input. EDIT: I'm editing here, rather than commenting, since comments don't seem to allow code blocks. Here's the actual code I ended up with, based on Rudedog's comment below. I also noticed that this doesn't update /etc/timezone. I'm not certain who uses that, but in case anybody does, I'm setting that too. I changed my JAVA_HOME back on my windows machine and this error still occurs. So now the code doesn't run on either machine. I recently installed git on my windows machine and added the code to a repository. But I haven't really done anything with it. All it said was it will convert all LF to CRLF...That shouldn't change anything though should it? Any ideas on why I am now getting these errors? I haven't changed anything on my windows machine in months except for installing git.

• Why does my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH get unset when using screen with bash?

  This is related to http://superuser.com/questions/27376/why-does-my-ld-library-path-get-unset-launching-terminal, but a different set of symptoms. First, /usr/bin/screen is setuid as per the other question. Second, the default shell on this system is /bin/tcsh for various historical reasons, and we're not allowed to chsh to /bin/bash, so I typically run bash manually immediately after login. Third, I almost always use screen, but I want ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen to create a new bash "tab", so I always invoke bash first. That is: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ bash [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] screen -U [~] ...and when reconnecting: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ screen -dUr [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] However, my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is there in tcsh, there in bash, but empty once I run screen; it is still present if I just run screen from tcsh, but then I get new tcsh "tabs" when I use ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen. Any ideas?

  at our company we have installed a Icinga together with PNP4Nagios. We've got a rare problem with the perfdata files PNP4Nagios creates. Each couple of weeks, we notice that our icinga server stops working correctly because it runs out of inodes. I've been looking around, and I've noticed that the problem is here: /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/spool Each couple of weeks, this folder contains over 300k perfdata files of this type: perfdata.1336058870 I think it must be a PNP4Nagios problem, because I think that normally each "X" time, PNP4Nagios should override existing perfdata files to NOT generate new ones. Do you have any idea on what I could change or what I must do to solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

This is where the variable PT_FILESTOKEEP comes in. Whatever number this is set to thats the amount of backups I want to keep. All backups are time stamped so by ordering them by name DESC will give you the latest first. Can anyone please help me with the rest of the BASH script to add the clean up of files? My knowledge of BASH is lacking and I'm unable to piece together the code to do the rest.

If I moved the .forward file to another filename, can I use it in procmail to send an email to the users in this file?

Also I setup mysql apparmor so it can rw on this directory, and rebooted afterward: /usr/sbin/mysqld { ................. /ssd_drive/mysql/* rw, ................. }

• Remapping keys on keyboard in Linux

  I am currently using xmodmap for remapping keys like Caps Lock on my keyboard. However, my keyboard has a bunch of keys on the top that are rarely used (Multimedia keyboard with buttons like Internet, Music, Next song, Mute etc) I want to remap these keys to specific commands (Not keys). For example: Pressing the Internet button should fire up my Firefox (/usr/bin/firefox)(which happens only in Windows for me) Also I need to map a specific button to xkill.   So, I just installed the node.js package from nodejs.org and I was poking around to see what it installed. Over in /usr/local/bin I saw this owner 24561. I see it in a few other places too. What is this? What does it mean?   Howdie Scenario: Allow developers to submit new application packages to a market server. Developers run a bash script which contains a cURL call to market server (localhost/market/submit/$app-name). The submit script on the server creates a new folder in existing svn server with the name of the submitted app. Script on dev side waits for HTTP to issue a success message and then do a svn checkout in dev local machine. Problem: The submit script on the market server failed to create new svn directory through code: echo `svnadmin mkdir -m 'added new package $package' http://localhost/market/packages/$package`; this does not echo nothing and when I go on http://localhost/market/packages, the folder has not been added and the revision number has not been incremented. I've tried from a terminal in market server chown root:www-data /usr/bin/svnadmin but still no luck. Somebody has come acrosss similar problem? Any solutions? Thanks!   I tried to configure ./configure --prefix=/localfolder glib-2.26.1/ make make install but it fails at make stage. trying to configure mc-4.6.1/ and make doesn't obviously work.
