How to force remove a package if dpkg removal script fails?

I'm trying to remove a package where I deleted the /etc/init.d/disco-master file (in an attempt to remove the package manually). I want to remove the disco-master package. How do I do this now? Installation problems with Gimp 2.8 on Kubuntu 12

I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 12.04 and having problems installing Gimp 2.8, I was wondering if anyone can help me? I've followed these instructions: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gimp but get this error: The following packages have unmet dependencies. gimp : Depends: libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 (>= 1.3.10) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Update information outdated, "Failed to fetch cdrom"

I have a warning triangle on the top of my screen. When I click on it, it says that my update information is outdated. Failed 11.10 to 12.04 upgrade and drove me crazy!

Please help me with this! I first tried to upgrade my Ubuntu server from 11.10 to 12.04 thru Upgrade Manager, but never succeeded! Then I tried upgrading thru terminal, which took me ~4 hours as I was warned. When I restarted my computer, my login GUI did not show up at all! (Panic I was!) But when I switched to tty6 and it seemed the upgrade has finished, at least partially and got message Ubuntu 12.04LTS and telling me 12.10 is available. There are bunch of unmet dependencies...."apt-get install -f" may resolve the problem. Then I tried: sudo apt-get -f install, did not succeed! Also I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I got bunch of error message too long to list here. Then I tried: sudo do-release-upgrade still bunch of error message there! There seems a lot trouble with the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 for me. Did I miss anything? Anyway, can I ask how I can get the gnome login GUI back? Thanks a lot! Yifang

upgrade glibc on RHEL4 without breaking anything

I have a static version of wkhtmltopdf which requires glibc-2.4 wkhtmltopdf: /lib/tls/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by wkhtmltopdf) I have apt installed with the DAG repos. Other than that the server is pretty stock standard except for Coldfusion MX7. My question is, is it safe to just "apt update glibc"? Will the updated glibc clobber the old one or will they co-exist? Should I "apt upgrade" the whole server? I'm pretty sure everything else (Apache2, Postgres8, etc) will handle the upgrade but Coldfusion concerns me due to its proprietry nature.

wget works with company proxy but apt-get and dpkg doesn't

Hi, I am trying to install some software in a fresh install of Linux dnoseda 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux. I already set the variables http_proxy, https_proxy and ftp_proxy and wget works perfectly. But when I try with apt-get it blocks trying to conect directly to the site, without the proxy. Or the other behavior that I got is a lots of 407 authentication errors. But the wget of those packages works perfectly. It's something missing? Can you help me? thanks in advance.

Automate proftpd-basic install on ubuntu using apt-get

I'm trying to build a shell script to automate the installation of several packages onto an Ubuntu 10.04 server, and I'm having problems with proftpd-basic. I'm using the command line apt-get -qy install proftpd-basic >/tmp/install.log For most packages, this approach would work fine, however proftpd-basic appears to require some interaction (it asks whether to perform an inetd or standalone installation). Is it possible for me to pre-select this option on the command line somehow, as I don't want the user to be bothered by this question? - For info, if it matters, I want to choose the 'standalone' option.

Can't seem to install the correct version of PHP, using apt-get install

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 LTS server, it's a new install on a VPS box from MediaTemple (their ve server). I'm trying to install PHP 5.4.3 on this box, but I'm having a common problem not matter what version I get. I'm trying to get the php-cgi process, so I do the command apt-get install php-cgi and that installs, but does not provide me with the php-cgi executable. I need this so that I can run php-cgi -b 127.0.0.1:9000 and have it has a FastCGI process for my nginx install. Any idea what I can do to get this to work, bonus points if you can get this to work with PHP 5.4.3, because all I can seem to install is PHP 5.3.5.

Cant finish upgrade from 11.10 to 12 on VPS based on Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, due to libc6

I was stuck with this problem near the end of an upgrade: WARNING: this version of the GNU libc requires kernel version 2.6.24 or later. Please upgrade your kernel before installing glibc. The installation of a 2.6 kernel could ask you to install a new libc first, this is NOT a bug, and should NOT be reported. In that case, please add lenny sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run: apt-get install -t lenny linux-image-2.6 Their suggested stepds dont work on VPS, and after googling, I came up to this: Why did my upgrade to 12.04 fail with "glibc not found" or "libc6" or "requires kernel 2.6.24" error? Today I've started upgrading OTRS from version 2.3 to 2.4 , 2.4 to 3.0 and 3.0 to 3.1. Everything went smoothly except the upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 OTRS provides a few perl scripts which make the upgrade easier. I've used these scripts for each upgrade step. I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? Also is one easier to upgrade to then the other?

Do I need to install Windows 7 and then upgrade or is there a easier way to install Windows 8 Pro Upgrade? When I try to activate I am getting an error Code: 0xC004F061. Description: The software licensing service determined that the specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations.

Upgrade PHP to 5.3 in Ubuntu Server 8.04 with Plesk 9.5

I have a dedicated server with Ubuntu 8.04, and really need to upgrade php to 5.3 version in order to deploy a new version of the system. This version of php is the default one in ubuntu 10.04, so I considered upgrading the OS, but after trying that, I lost my plesk installation, which annoyed my client. I tried adding the dotdeb.org repositories, but don't know why, after running an apt-get upgrade, I get this error: # apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages have been kept back: libapache2-mod-php5 php5 php5-cgi php5-cli php5-common php5-curl php5-gd php5-imap php5-mysql php5-sqlite php5-xsl 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded. Any idea why is this happenning? Or do you know any alternative method (except compiling my own binaries) to upgrade php or update ubuntu without loosing plesk? Thanks!

Windows 7 Upgrade from an OEM disc

I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and a Windows 7 Pro Upgrade key. It also comes with a cavalcade of bloatware. I would like to start with a fresh install of Windows. I understand that I can upgrade to W7Pro using the option in the Home Premium Start menu. However, I also own a Windows 7 Pro OEM installation disc from another computer. Can I use this Windows 7 Pro OEM disc to install Windows, and when it asks me for my key, provide the upgrade key purchased? Or am i required to install Home Premium first and then apply my upgrade key?

Windows Upgrade vs Full Install

I'm in the process of purchasing a Netbook for use while traveling. The included OS is XP, however, I would like to upgrade(?) to Windows 7. My question: Does a Windows Upgrade have the same physical footprint and performance as a full install? Does an upgrade leave behind non used files/resources that were originally included in XP? If so, are there ways to reduce this? I'm trying to reduce as much OS bloat as possible. Please let me know if my question is unclear. Thanks. Could one hypothetically upgrade a computer from Windows 95 to Windows 8

Hypothetically, could you start with a computer running Windows 95, upgrade this to Windows 98, then upgrade this to Windows XP, then upgrade this to Vista, then to 7 and finally to 8 (consumer preview)? What state would the OS be in after so many upgrades? Would any of the native Windows 95 apps still be sticking around in Windows 8? Has anybody done anything like this before? I don't need to do this, I am just asking out of curiosity! Thanks

update-apt-xapian-index hogs CPU, even when Update Manager is set to not check for updates

I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

Force apt-get to ask all install equations again?

I made a mistake. I answered the wrong way when installing something with apt-get. Now, when I purge it and reinstall it, it doesn't ask me the question any more. How do I force apt-get to ask me the question again? I'd really rather do this through the package manager than making the changes manually; that's the whole point of using a package manager.... The package in question is jackd. The first time I installed it, I answered "no" to the question about real-time priority. Now, I wish I'd said yes. However, even though I purge and install it again, I don't get the question. (I have tried dpkg-reconfigure jackd -- that doesn't give me any questions to answer.)
