  • Serial port determinism

    This seems like a simple question, but it is difficult to search for. I need to interface with a device over the serial port. In the event my program (or another) does not finish writing a command to the device, how do I ensure the next run of the program can successfully send a command? Example: The foo program runs and begins writing "A_VERY_LONG_COMMAND" The user terminates the program, but the program has only written, "A_VERY" The user runs the program again, and the command is resent. Except, the device sees "A_VERYA_VERY_LONG_COMMAND," which isn't what we want. Is there any way to make this more deterministic? Serial port programming feels very out-of-control due to issues like this.

  • Why is there no music streaming API service?

    Apple has decided to kill lala.com. I loved that site. Now, everyone has to go back to paying $0.89+ for songs from Amazon, iTunes, etc. Lame. Rhapsody would be great, except there are no clients for Mac or Linux. They do have a web interface, buy it is nothing compared to lala's web 2.0y interface. What I just don't understand is, why is there no music API streaming service out there? Basically, developers could hook the service into any desktop or web app, and then users of the app could pay $x a month (like with Rhapsody) and play any amount of music, so long as their subscription is active. Why not? Lala streamed music to web browsers, so surely it could be as secure as lala is (was), preventing music theft.

  • Why does null need to be casted?

    The following code does not compile: //int a = ... int? b = (int?) (a != 0 ? a : null); In order to compile, it needs to be changed to int? b = (a != 0 ? a : (int?) null); Since both b = null and b = a are legal, this doesn't make sense to me. Why does null need to be casted, and why can't we simply cast the whole expression (which I know is legal in other cases)?

  • Polygon with different line width (in R)

    Hi all, I would like to use a command like this: plot(c(1,8), 1:2, type="n") polygon(1:7, c(2,1,2,NA,2,1,2), col=c("red", "blue"), # border=c("green", "yellow"), border=c(1,10), lwd=c(1:10)) To create two triangles, with different line widths. But the polygon command doesn't seem to recycle the "lwd" parameter as it does the col or the border parameters. I would like the resulting plot to look like what the following code will produce: plot(c(1,8), 1:2, type="n") polygon(1:3, c(2,1,2), col=c("red"), # border=c("green", "yellow"), border=c(1,10), lwd=c(1)) polygon(5:7, c(2,1,2), col=c( "blue"), # border=c("green", "yellow"), border=c(1,10), lwd=c(10)) So my questions are: Is there something like polygon that does what I asked for? (If not, I would do it by creating a new polygon function that will break the original x,y by their NA's, although I am not yet sure what is the smartest way to do that...) Thanks, Tal

  • How to validate ToCheckList jQuery plugin (or multiple select fields)?

    Anyone ever use the toChecklist jQuery plugin? It basically turns a multi-select box into a list of checkboxes. Makes it easier for users to understand that they can choose more than one item - excellent plugin. However, I'm trying to make sure that users on my site pick at least 1 item in the list. ToChecklist has the capability of limiting the selection to a max value, but not minimum. I'm already using the jQuery validate plugin to validate the whole form, any ideas to get it to work against a multi-select box (which would then hopefully just work with toChecklist)?   • Android application chrashes after "share" intent

    Hi, My app offers a "share/tell-a-friend" function. When the "share" button is pressed the following method is being called to open a list of apps, which can perform the action (Eg. Gmail, Twittroid, Facebook...): public void share() { Intent shareIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND); shareIntent.setType("text/plain"); shareIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, getText(R.string.menu_share_subject)); shareIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, getText(R.string.menu_share_body)); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(shareIntent, getText(R.string.menu_share_intent))); } The sharing functionality works basically. But when the sharing app (Facebook, Twitter, ...) tries to return to my app, a force close is thrown. I guess that my app gets closed in the background during the sharing process... at least that is what the debugger sais... Any ideas?

  • Do I need to use decimal places when using floats? Is the "f" suffix necessary?

    I've seen several examples in books and around the web where they sometimes use decimal places when declaring float values even if they are whole numbers, and sometimes using an "f" suffix. Is this necessary? For example: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8 green:0.914 blue:0.9 alpha:1.00]; How is this different from: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8f green:0.914f blue:0.9f alpha:1.00f]; Does the trailing "f" mean anything special? Getting rid of the trailing zeros for the alpha value works too, so it becomes: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8 green:0.914 blue:0.9 alpha:1]; So are the decimal zeros just there to remind myself and others that the value is a float? Just one of those things that has puzzled me so any clarification is welcome :)

  • Why am I getting this WSDL SOAP error with authorize.net?

    I have my script email me when there is a problem creating a recurring transaction with authorize.net. I received the following at 5:23AM Pacific time: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from 'https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl' : failed to load external entity "https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl" And of course, when I did exactly the same thing that the user did, it worked fine for me. Does this mean authorize.net's API is down? Their knowledge base simply sucks and provides no information whatsoever about this problem. I've contacted the company, but I'm not holding my breath for a response. Google reveals nothing. Looking through their code, nothing stands out. Maybe an authentication error? Has anyone seen an error like this before? What causes this?

    I've got my encryption function working properly however I cannot figure out how to get the decrypt function to give proper output. Here is my encrypt function: function Encrypt($data, $secret) { //Generate a key from a hash $key = md5(utf8_encode($secret), true); //Take first 8 bytes of $key and append them to the end of $key. $key .= substr($key, 0, 8); //Pad for PKCS7 $blockSize = mcrypt_get_block_size('tripledes', 'ecb'); $len = strlen($data); $pad = $blockSize - ($len % $blockSize); $data .= str_repeat(chr($pad), $pad); //Encrypt data $encData = mcrypt_encrypt('tripledes', $key, $data, 'ecb'); return base64_encode($encData); } Here is my decrypt function: function Decrypt($data, $secret) { $text = base64_decode($data); $data = mcrypt_decrypt('tripledes', $secret, $text, 'ecb'); $block = mcrypt_get_block_size('tripledes', 'ecb'); $pad = ord($data[($len = strlen($data)) - 1]); return substr($data, 0, strlen($data) - $pad); } Right now I am using a key of test and I'm trying to encrypt 1234567. I get the base64 output from encryption I'm looking for, but when I go to decrypt I get a blank response. I'm not very well versed in encryption/decryption so any help is much appreciated!!

  • Make MySQL database replication always use the most free node?

    We started using Multi-Master Replication Manager for MySQL, and I am wondering whether it is possible to to treat this setup like multi-symmetric processing: a process pops off the process queue, and the node (in this case a server) that is most free is selected for the job. It seems that what happens is, the service switches to a slave ONLY when it mysqld crashes or goes away. Is there a way to make database replication for MySQL act in more of a distributed manner? Maybe there is other software besides MMM that can do this? Is there a way to switch the reader role to another server whene mysqld slows down (rather than just when it fails)?

    I've started digging around with using the Telerik Extensions for MVC. They don't integrate seemlessly into my current project, but I could reorganize things to fit it in. But, I'm wondering if it would be worth it in the end. I've been searching for reviews on the extensions, I haven't seen too many. So I'm asking here. On their website they claim: You can achieve unprecedented performance for your web application with the lightweight, semantically rendered Extensions that completely leverage the ASP.NET MVC model of no postbacks, no ViewState, and no page life cycle. So I'm curious, What is your opinion of the Telerik Extensions for MVC?

  • Are there any libraries for showing diffs between two web pages?

    I am looking for a library in any language--preferably PHP though--that will display the difference between two web pages. The differences can be displayed side-by-side, all in one document, or in any other creative way. Every solution I tried suffered from one or more of the following problems: If I change the attribute of an element (eg. change [table border="1"] to [table border="2"]), then I'll have an extra table tag in the output (eg. [table border="1"][table border="1"][tr][td]...). And, one table tag will have a del tag around it, while the other will have an ins tag around it, and that will obviously cause problems. If I change [html][body][b]some content here[/b][/body][/html] to [html][body][i]some other content here[/i][/body][/html] then it looks like [html][body][b][del]original[/del][i][ins]new[/ins] content here[/b][/i][/body][/html] I'm looking for out-of-the-box ideas. Any ideas are welcome.

    Hello all, First, let me state what brought this question about: I saw the green checkmark icon in this post and I would like to use it in my own application. However, since it looks so much like the UITableViewCellAccessoryDetailDisclosureButton my assumption is that this green checkmark icon is provided by the iPhone OS in some form or fashion. So, my question is: how can I use the green checkmark icon and/or other OS-provided images in my own applications?     I want to bounce users of our web site to an error page if they're using a version of Internet Explorer prior to v9. It's just not worth our time and money to support IE pre-v9. Users of all other non-IE browsers are fine and shouldn't be bounced. Here's the proposed code: if(navigator.appName.indexOf("Internet Explorer")!=-1){ //yeah, he's using IE var badBrowser=( navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE 9")==-1 && //v9 is ok navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE 1")==-1 //v10, 11, 12, etc. is fine too ); if(badBrowser){ // navigate to error page } } Will this code do the trick? To head off a few comments that will probably be coming my way: [1] Yes, I know that users can forge their useragent string. I'm not concerned. [2] Yes, I know that programming pros prefer sniffing out feature-support instead of browser-type but I don't feel this approach makes sense in this case. I already know that all (relevant) non-IE browsers support the features that I need and that all pre-v9 IE browsers don't. Checking feature by feature throughout the site would be a waste. [3] Yes, I know that someone trying to access the site using IE v1 (or = 20) wouldn't get 'badBrowser' set to true and the warning page wouldn't be displayed properly. That's a risk we're willing to take. [4] Yes, I know that Microsoft has "conditional comments" that can be used for precise browser version detection. IE no longer supports conditional comments as of IE 10, rendering this approach absolutely useless. Any other obvious issues to be aware of? Thanks.

  • Anyone have any issues with using PLINQO and ASP.NET MVC 2.0?

    I'm asking because I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 site, thinking of upgrading to ASP.NET MVC 2.0. Then I read that PLINQO 5.0 was released (I had never heard of PLINQO before) and have been impressed with what PLINQO appears to be capable of. 1) Is PLINQO capable of building out an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 UI project when it's run? 2) Have you had any bad experiences using PLINQO (particularly in an ASP.NET MVC app)? Let me make sure I have the scenario right in my mind: Using PLINQO (assuming it supports ASP.NET MVC 2.0), I should be able to point it to my DB and it will create 3 projects: data, test, and mvc 2.0 UI? The data would contain LINQ to SQL queries, with the PLINQO extensions added in and the other projects setup to use the data project by default?

The request sits there for 20 seconds or until the controller method finds a record in the database, waiting. That works. function poll() { $.ajax({ url: '/my_controller/poll', type: 'GET', dataType: 'json', cache: false, data: 'time=' + new Date().getTime(), success: function(response) { // show response here }, complete: function() { poll(); }, error: function() { alert('error'); poll(); } }); } When I have 5 - 10 tabs open in my browser, my web application becomes super slow. Is this to be expected? Or is there some obvious improvement(s) I can make?

  • Visual Studio 2008 - formatting/control characters/marks

    Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help.     Querying a Nested Set Model table, here's the SQL... how can this be written in LINQ? SELECT parent.name FROM nested_category AS node, nested_category AS parent WHERE node.lft BETWEEN parent.lft AND parent.rgt AND node.name = 'FLASH' ORDER BY parent.lft; particularly, the FROM part... never tried to do anything like that in LINQ.
