  Hi there, in MySQL5.1, is there a way to make one table accessible by two different names? I'm thinking about somethink like a symlink on linux filesystems. I know theres the CREATE VIEW myview AS SELECT * FrOM mytable thing, but I don't only need to SELECT from both names, but also delete etc ... You might ask why I want to do this? It's about getting a commercial, closed-source app to work, which is crappily programmed (usually, the table names are all lower-case, but occasionally, they use capitalized names for the same table ...). Oh, that would be another idea: Is there a way to tell MySQL not to care about capitalization of table names (like on Windows filesystems?)? that would also do the trick ... Thanks for your insight! • Fill rows down quickly (column or matrix of zeros)

  I have an extremely basic question, but I have never found the answer by searching the internet. I simply want to create a large column of zeros with Excel. Sometimes I want to create a huge matrix of zeros (maybe 600 rows by 500 columns) and then replace a few zeros with 1's to create a model design matrix. I have always started by creating a column of, for example, 10 zeros, copying and pasting those zeroes, then copying and pasting the resulting column of 20 zeros, etc., until I had the desired number of rows. Then I would copy and paste that column of zeros one at a time over and over until I had the desired number of columns. This procedure is tedious and time-consuming and I know there must be an easier way. Do you know of any other methods?

• Alias one set of Subdomains to another

  I have to domains that I want to effectively mirror one another on select subdomains. Let's say they are pirates.com and ninjas.com and i want ninjas to mirror the content on pirates. When I visit foo.ninjas.com I want to see the content on foo.pirates.com. Due to app restrictions I need to do this in DNS for an undefined number of subdomains. I was under the impression i could do this with a CNAME, but it appears that setting a CNAME for * subdomain of the ninjas.com domain to point to pirates.com will make any subdomain of ninjas.com point at pirates.com instead of the associated subdomain. I.e. foo.ninjas.com would reference pirates.com instead of foo.pirates.com. Is there a way to do this using DNS? Am I missing something basic?

• CSS layout with 2 columns, taking up all width of browser, where left column can collapse

  I want to have a 2 column layout, and have the left column able to be 200 px at first, and have a "shrink" button to shrink it down to 10px, and have the right column expand to fill all the rest of the available space. Then if they click on the "show" button (which will be all they see in the now 10px wide left column) have the left grow back to 200px and have the right column shrink by that amount. I can't figure out how to make the right column grown and shrink without knowing the exact width of the window. I hope this makes sense, and I really hope someone can point me in the right direction. Browser requirements are IE8, FF3.6, Safari, and Chrome, so in theory I can use some advanced CSS techniques. At least I don't have to support IE6.

But I need to make additional convertion (needed to work correctly with legacy apps): for all dates we need to change timezone to UTC and set time to 12:00 PM. So now dates are stored in local database (New York) timezone. Could you advice, how to set timezone for date value in Oracle (I found only suggestions how to convert from one timezone to another) (for example in Java there is setTimeZone method for Calendar objects). We want to make a convertion this way: rename old date column to NAME_BAK create new column timestamp with local timezone iterate over old column for not-null values set timezone to UTC, time to 12:00 PM drop old column after testing of this migration

  Hi ! In Sql Server 2005 I have a column with a "DEFAULT" constraint. I'd like to create a script that drops that column. The problem is that is returns me that error : Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object 'DF__PeriodSce__IsClo__4BCC3ABA' is dependent on column 'IsClosed'. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN IsClosed failed because one or more objects access this column. I couldn't find an easy way to drop a column and all its associated constraints (only found big scripts that look into system table... there MUST (!!) be a "nice" way to do that !). And as the DEFAULT constraint's name has been randomly generated, I can't drop it by name. Thanks for your help.
