• Adsense ads are not a good fit for my site

  I run an academic network for college students to communicate at particular universities and we run Google Adsense. The site pulls in a decent amount for a side project but our CTR is horrible <0.2% and our RPM is equally low. The problem lies in the fact that Google pegs us as an education site (which we are) but shows our users ads for U of Phoenix, Devry U and other for-profit universities. All of our users are students of the more higher-caliber institutions and therefore have no use for these ads. I've known about this problem for some time but I don't know what to do to show more relevant ads instead (i.e. Spring Break, school apparel, poker, sports, etc). What would be the best way to change this?

• udev rule gives wrong group ownership

  I have added a udev rule for my Arduino, but the symlink gets the ownership "root root" instead of "root dialout". $ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/47-Arduino.rules SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="2341", ATTR{idProduct}=="0001", MODE="0666", SYMLINK+="arduino", GROUP="dialout" $ ls -la /dev/ar* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 sep 8 11:02 /dev/arduino -> bus/usb/003/007 $ ls -la /dev/bus/usb/003/007 crw-rw-r-- 1 root dialout 189, 262 sep 8 11:12 /dev/bus/usb/003/007 My user is a member of the group "dialout" but I still get "Permission Denied" error when I'm trying to communicate with the device. There are also no problems when I'm using the "default" device "/etc/ttyACM3". $ ls -la /dev/ttyACM3 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 3 sep 8 11:12 /dev/ttyACM3 I have tried to restart both the udev service and reboot my computer. How can I fix this?

• How can I refactor a code base while others rapidly commit to it?

  I'm on a private project that eventually will become open source. We have a few team members, talented enough with the technologies to build apps, but not dedicated developers who can write clean/beautiful and most importantly long-term maintainable code. I've set out to refactor the code base, but it's a bit unwieldy as someone in the team out in another country I'm not in regular contact with could be updating this totally separate thing. I know one solution is to communicate rapidly or adopt better PM practices, but we're just not that big yet. I just want to clean up the code and merge nicely into what he has updated. Would a branch be a suitable plan? A best-effort-merge? Something else?

• brother MFC-J435W wireless scanning issue

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I have a brother MFC-J435W and I was able to get the printer set up for wireless printing, but it is not allowing me to scan wirelessly. It gives me the message to "check connection". I'll tell you what I've done so far and maybe someone can help me out. I've installed the scanner driver and scan tool I installed Xsane (to see if it would allow the scanner to communicate with the computer and that didn't help). I've tried restarting the computer. After those things I am now at a loss as to where to go from here. Any help would be great. Thanks. I've also searched for this question in the Brother FAQ as well as on here and I haven't found an answer. Thanks again.

• How to implement instant communication between iPad and iPhone through the net?

  What is the best way to implement this: 1.iphone/webBrowser user selects some products (a,b,c) to buy 2.the chosen products most appear on the iPad located in the Store. using a UITableView perhaps. 3.The store staff then decide if the products are available in 10, 20 or 30 minutes for pick up. 4.When the store staff chose the time(10,20,30 minutes) it must appear/communicate back to the users web browser or iPhone. 5.buyer comes to the store to pick up the products he buyed! Im not really good in this kind of communication stuff! I need help! what is the best way to implement this? are there external api/plugin I could use? I already have an ftp server. • Dealing with technical debt

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Wake up from sleep with GPIO (I2C)

  My situation: Ubuntu 10.10 running on an atom driven main board the main board has a GPIO chip integrated (F75111 by Fintek). They communicate through I2C(SMBus). We have a driver running that works, we can send outputs and read inputs. Great! We would like to use the I/O interface to suspend (sleep) and wake up again. Sleep is no problem. On an incoming input: run s2both. Ubuntu goes to sleep and prepares a hibernate state, so when the power-cord is unplugged by accident, it will wake from hibernate. But the big question: how to wake on an input if the OS is already sleeping! You can wake from a lot of devices (lan, usb, ring, etc) but I can't find out how to wake from a I2C card. PLEASE HELP!

• Can web applications running on IIS7 Windows Server 2008 R2 be forced to immediately detect changes to hosts file?

  We have several web applications running on several load-balanced servers. We want to have our web applications communicate with each other without first traversing outside the load balancer. For example: http://appA.example.com is running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 http://appB.example.com is also running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 The load balancer's public IP address is 198.51.100.3 By default, when appA on 192.0.2.1 makes a call to a WCF service hosted in appB, the HTTP request is routed to 192.51.100.3; this establishes a new session and the load balancer will direct the call to either of the two servers We want the call to be routed to the instance of appB running on the same server so we add 192.0.2.1 appB.example.com to the hosts file on 192.0.2.1. This eventually works, but we either have to wait for the app pool to naturally recycle or do a manual reset before appA sees the new address. Is there any way to have the change automatically detected without having to recycle the app pool?

• What can I do to encourage teams to lighten up? [closed]

  I work with a geographically distributed team (different timezones) with people from various cultures and background. Some of us have never met each other in person but we communicate with each other over phone, chat and email almost on an hourly basis. Most of our meetings and discussions are dead serious and boring. What's worse, any attempt at humor is not very well received because of cultural differences. I feel that we are all taking our work a bit too seriously. We don't shy away from painful arguments, nasty emails and heated discussions when things go wrong but never attempt to develop camaraderie or friendships in better times. I would like to know your experiences with such situations and what, if anything, did you do to lighten things up at workplace.

• On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

  Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website! Does anyone know my best solution to progress to having this feature on my website, any tutorials or free to use, free to modify web plugins? Thank you for your help, Best Regards, Tim

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • What are the best patterns/designs for stateful API development?

  I am about to implement a API for my TCP/IP server written in Java. Right now I have a temporary method that takes a String, executes a command based on the String and returns a String basically like the following. public void communicate(BufferedReader in, PrintWriter out) { while(true) { out.println(handleCommand(in.readLine())); } } private String handleCommand(String command) { if (command.equals("command1") { // do stuff return "Command 1 executed"; } else if (command.equals("command2") { // do some other stuff return "Command 2 executed"; } } I really want to do something more extensible, smarter and stateful, so I could handle more complex and stateful commands and without the method/class getting bloated. How would you start? Suggestions, ideas, or links for further reading are very welcome.

• State Pattern - should a state know about its context?

  I am referring to the state pattern as described in this link. In the example class diagram, a context has numerous states. However, it does not show how does a state communicates with a context (perhaps an input in a state has impact on a setting in the context). The two examples on the page shows either passing the context to the state via a function, or storing a reference to the context. Are those advisable? Are there other ways for a state to communicate with a context? Update to an edit: For instance, I am doing a remote control which can have several states. Say, the context has a setting for Volume, and I am in one of the states which allow me to tweak the volume. How should the state communicates with the context that the volume is being changed?

• Zotero error in libreoffice

  I installed Zotero standalone in 12.10 64bit. Some problems which I managed to fix. The one that remains is an error saying "openoffice.org could not communicate with Zotero. make sure zotero standalone or Firefox are open and set to an online state and try again". That's when I click any button in the Zotero toolbar in libreoffice. Firefox doesn't open with a the plugin installed and a working internet connection. The Zotero troubleshooting which mentions this error was of no help to me. I find reports about this bug going back as far as 2009 but I haven't found anything of help.

• Game getting progressively laggier?

  I have a small game in HTML5 that uses socket.io to communicate with a node.js server. Now my problem is that, eversince I did my last update on it it seems to have something "chunk up" in the background making it laggier and laggier the longer it runs. In the update were a few temporary local variables being defined with var(you know, variables that are only used during one function and then not needed anymore) alongside with alot of other changes, and I am not even sure if this update or something else is causing this. Might the "var" have caused it? Or what other reasons might this strange complication have?

  I want to test websites for JavaScript malware presence . I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ? If I use telnet client library to communicate with the VM: must I implement a server within the VM to deal with my queries or can I overcome this ? I am jut looing for hints, general ideas. • Native mobile app development - how do I structure my user stories?

  I'm about to start on a project which will involve developing prototype native mobile apps (iOS and Android initially) as well as a web-based admin interface and an API for these apps to communicate with. We've got a list of stories already drafted up, however a lot of them are in the format: As a mobile user I want to be able to view a login screen so that I can sign into the app If this were targeted for a single platform, I wouldn't see a problem. However, since we're targeting multiple platforms, I'm not sure whether these should now be duplicated eg "As an Android user" or similar. This seems like duplication, but it's work that will need to be completed separately for each platform. This is the first mobile project we've gone native on - previously it was Phonegap and we lumped all stories in under "As a mobile user". Since essentially this was a web-based app wrapped in native code, this didn't present too much of an issue, but I'm conscious that wholly-native apps are a different ballgame!

• What should I know before starting my first consulting project?

I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. • Developing Games for Samsung Smart TV

  We are planning to develop a game for Samsung Smart TVs. Although those TVs support Flash and HTML5 other specs fail at supporting a game engine. For ex: Using an engine that needs GPU is not possible with the default Samsung smart tv set. Or... WebGL is supported with Samsung SDK 4.1 but we don't know if SDK 4.1 is available for Smart TV series between 7000-9000 or not. We have tried to communicate with Samsung but they don't really seem to respond. Is there anyone who has developed a game for Samsung Smart TVs? If there is, can you name the game engines that can work with those TVs?

• Should I use events in this case?

  I'm creating a video player, like a custom YouTube player. All of the GUI elements (progress bar, video player, play button, ...) are different classes, but I obviously need them to communicate. When the progress bar is clicked, or the slider is moved, it needs to send a "seek(x)" command to the video player. Similarly, the video player needs to update the progressbar every frame. Currently I'm doing this by having almost all elements have a link to each other. So when I create the progress bar, I'm telling it where the video player is. But after a while this becomes more and more complicated, and I'm wondering if events would be a better way to do this. Or a main controller class that has all the connections. What should I do?

• I need to create an employee schedule/appointments program, but I don't know how to set it up

  I work for a gym. I am the programmer, its just me, nobody else! Gets really frustrating when there's nobody to bounce conceptual ideas off of. I'm getting rid of our archaic paper binder systems for tracking appointments and what not. I've made a lot of things successfully already, now I'm trying to tackle the personal training department. What I want: Trainer information and work schedule Appointment booking that can be done by time slot with all available trainers for that time, or by trainer with all available hours for that trainer What I've tried so far: I started with an 'appointments' database, a 'trainers' database, and a 'schedules' database. This became so complicated trying to fit the schedule in that I scrapped it. Does anyone know know the best way to structure the tables for this and how to sort of make them communicate correctly? I don't need specific code, I just need help understand how to make this thing!

• Connection make b/w iphone to windows pc-rajay [on hold]

  I Need to create connection between ios to windows by using socket programming in ios. I'm trying to to use an application to communicate with Windows via sockets. At the minimum, I'm trying to at least figure out how I can create a connection from the iPhone (maybe using the iPhone to ping the Windows machine?) I'm not really clear on where I need to start. I'm pretty new to iOS development in general, and brand new to socket/network programming. I've tried several tutorials that haven't gotten me far. My goal is: Connect to a server via sockets (the server will be a Windows machine with a service waiting for incoming connections from the iPhone) If possible, I would like to write/build the client piece first, but I have been lost thus far. Hopefully the nice folks in the SO community can lend a hand and point me in the right direction.
