  • assign operator to variable in python?

    - by abhilashm86
Usual method of applying mathematics to variables is a * b Is it able to calculate and manipulate two operands like this? a = input('enter a value') b = input('enter a value') op = raw_input('enter a operand') then how do i connect op and two variables a and b?? i know i can compare op to +, -, %, $ and then assign and compute.... but can i do something like a op b , how to tell compiler that op is an operator?? any tweaks possible?

  • O(log n) algorithm to find the element having rank i in union of pre-sorted lists

    - by Eternal Learner
Given two sorted lists, each containing n real numbers, is there a O(log?n) time algorithm to compute the element of rank i (where i coresponds to index in increasing order) in the union of the two lists, assuming the elements of the two lists are distinct? I can think of using a Merge procedure to merge the 2 lists and then find the A[i] element in constant time. But the Merge would take O(n) time. How do we solve it in O(log n) time?

  • solving origin of a vectors

    - by Mike
I have two endpoints (xa,ya) and (xb,yb) of two vectors, respectively a and b, originating from a same point (xo, yo). Also, I know that |a|=|b|+s, where s is a constant. I tried to compute the origin (xo, yo) but seem to fail at some point. How to solve this?

  • reflection paths between points in2d

    - by Chris H
Just wondering if there was a nice (already implemented/documented) algorithm to do the following Given any shape (without crossing edges) and two points inside that shape, compute all the paths between the two points such that all reflections are perfect reflections. The path lengths should be limited to a certain length otherwise there are infinite solutions. I'm not interested in just shooting out rays to try to guess how close I can get, I'm interested in algorithms that can do it perfectly. Search based, not guess/improvement based.

  • g++ SSE intrinsics dilemma - value from intrinsic "saturates"

    - by Sriram
    Hi, I wrote a simple program to implement SSE intrinsics for computing the inner product of two large (100000 or more elements) vectors. The program compares the execution time for both, inner product computed the conventional way and using intrinsics. Everything works out fine, until I insert (just for the fun of it) an inner loop before the statement that computes the inner product. Before I go further, here is the code: //this is a sample Intrinsics program to compute inner product of two vectors and compare Intrinsics with traditional method of doing things. #include <iostream> #include <iomanip> #include <xmmintrin.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <time.h> #include <stdlib.h> using namespace std; typedef float v4sf __attribute__ ((vector_size(16))); double innerProduct(float* arr1, int len1, float* arr2, int len2) { //assume len1 = len2. float result = 0.0; for(int i = 0; i < len1; i++) { for(int j = 0; j < len1; j++) { result += (arr1[i] * arr2[i]); } } //float y = 1.23e+09; //cout << "y = " << y << endl; return result; } double sse_v4sf_innerProduct(float* arr1, int len1, float* arr2, int len2) { //assume that len1 = len2. if(len1 != len2) { cout << "Lengths not equal." << endl; exit(1); } /*steps: * 1. load a long-type (4 float) into a v4sf type data from both arrays. * 2. multiply the two. * 3. multiply the same and store result. * 4. add this to previous results. */ v4sf arr1Data, arr2Data, prevSums, multVal, xyz; //__builtin_ia32_xorps(prevSums, prevSums); //making it equal zero. //can explicitly load 0 into prevSums using loadps or storeps (Check). float temp[4] = {0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0}; prevSums = __builtin_ia32_loadups(temp); float result = 0.0; for(int i = 0; i < (len1 - 3); i += 4) { for(int j = 0; j < len1; j++) { arr1Data = __builtin_ia32_loadups(&arr1[i]); arr2Data = __builtin_ia32_loadups(&arr2[i]); //store the contents of two arrays. multVal = __builtin_ia32_mulps(arr1Data, arr2Data); //multiply. xyz = __builtin_ia32_addps(multVal, prevSums); prevSums = xyz; } } //prevSums will hold the sums of 4 32-bit floating point values taken at a time. Individual entries in prevSums also need to be added. __builtin_ia32_storeups(temp, prevSums); //store prevSums into temp. cout << "Values of temp:" << endl; for(int i = 0; i < 4; i++) cout << temp[i] << endl; result += temp[0] + temp[1] + temp[2] + temp[3]; return result; } int main() { clock_t begin, end; int length = 100000; float *arr1, *arr2; double result_Conventional, result_Intrinsic; // printStats("Allocating memory."); arr1 = new float[length]; arr2 = new float[length]; // printStats("End allocation."); srand(time(NULL)); //init random seed. // printStats("Initializing array1 and array2"); begin = clock(); for(int i = 0; i < length; i++) { // for(int j = 0; j < length; j++) { // arr1[i] = rand() % 10 + 1; arr1[i] = 2.5; // arr2[i] = rand() % 10 - 1; arr2[i] = 2.5; // } } end = clock(); cout << "Time to initialize array1 and array2 = " << ((double) (end - begin)) / CLOCKS_PER_SEC << endl; // printStats("Finished initialization."); // printStats("Begin inner product conventionally."); begin = clock(); result_Conventional = innerProduct(arr1, length, arr2, length); end = clock(); cout << "Time to compute inner product conventionally = " << ((double) (end - begin)) / CLOCKS_PER_SEC << endl; // printStats("End inner product conventionally."); // printStats("Begin inner product using Intrinsics."); begin = clock(); result_Intrinsic = sse_v4sf_innerProduct(arr1, length, arr2, length); end = clock(); cout << "Time to compute inner product with intrinsics = " << ((double) (end - begin)) / CLOCKS_PER_SEC << endl; //printStats("End inner product using Intrinsics."); cout << "Results: " << endl; cout << " result_Conventional = " << result_Conventional << endl; cout << " result_Intrinsics = " << result_Intrinsic << endl; return 0; } I use the following g++ invocation to build this: g++ -W -Wall -O2 -pedantic -march=i386 -msse intrinsics_SSE_innerProduct.C -o innerProduct Each of the loops above, in both the functions, runs a total of N^2 times. However, given that arr1 and arr2 (the two floating point vectors) are loaded with a value 2.5, the length of the array is 100,000, the result in both cases should be 6.25e+10. The results I get are: Results: result_Conventional = 6.25e+10 result_Intrinsics = 5.36871e+08 This is not all. It seems that the value returned from the function that uses intrinsics "saturates" at the value above. I tried putting other values for the elements of the array and different sizes too. But it seems that any value above 1.0 for the array contents and any size above 1000 meets with the same value we see above. Initially, I thought it might be because all operations within SSE are in floating point, but floating point should be able to store a number that is of the order of e+08. I am trying to see where I could be going wrong but cannot seem to figure it out. I am using g++ version: g++ (GCC) 4.4.1 20090725 (Red Hat 4.4.1-2). Any help on this is most welcome. Thanks, Sriram.

  • Data Quality Check - SQL Server

    - by user319384
I am trying to find a good mechanism where I can check whether the data being entered by a group of people is grammatically correct, has correct spellings, etc, etc. I also would like to compute words per minute and accuracy. Is there any process to do this so that I do not have to re-invent the wheel? Thanks in advance.

  • Number of different elements in an array.

    - by AB
Is it possible to compute the number of different elements in an array in linear time and constant space? Let us say it's an array of long integers, and you can not allocate an array of length sizeof(long). P.S. Not homework, just curious. I've got a book that sort of implies that it is possible.

  • How can I await the first completed async task of a list in .Net?

    - by Eyal
My input is a long list of files located on an Amazon S3 server. I'd like to download the metadata of the files, compute the hashes of the local files, and compare the metadata hash with the local files' hash. Currently, I use a loop to start all the metadata downloads asynchronously, then as each completes, compute MD5 on the local file if needed and compare. Here's the code (just the relevant lines): Dim s3client As New AmazonS3Client(KeyId.Text, keySecret.Text) Dim responseTasks As New List(Of System.Tuple(Of ListViewItem, Task(Of GetObjectMetadataResponse))) For Each lvi As ListViewItem In lvStatus.Items Dim gomr As New Amazon.S3.Model.GetObjectMetadataRequest gomr.BucketName = S3FileDialog.GetBucketName(lvi.SubItems(2).Text) gomr.Key = S3FileDialog.GetPrefix(lvi.SubItems(2).Text) responseTasks.Add(New System.Tuple(Of ListViewItem, Task(Of GetObjectMetadataResponse))(lvi, s3client.GetObjectMetadataAsync(gomr))) Next For Each t As System.Tuple(Of ListViewItem, Task(Of GetObjectMetadataResponse)) In responseTasks Dim response As GetObjectMetadataResponse = Await t.Item2 If response.ETag.Trim(""""c) = MD5CalcFile(lvi.SubItems(1).Text) Then lvi.SubItems(3).Text = "Match" UpdateLvi(lvi) End If Next I've got two problems: I'm awaiting the reponses in the order that I made them. I'd rather process them in the order that they complete so that I get them faster. The MD5 calculation is long and synchronous. I tried making it async but the process locked up. I think that the MD5 task was added to the end of .Net's task list and it didn't get to run until all the downloads completed. Ideally, I process the response as they arrive, not in order, and the MD5 is asynchronous but gets a chance to run. Edit: Incorporating WhenAll, it looks like this now: Dim s3client As New Amazon.S3.AmazonS3Client(KeyId.Text, keySecret.Text) Dim responseTasks As New Dictionary(Of Task(Of GetObjectMetadataResponse), ListViewItem) For Each lvi As ListViewItem In lvStatus.Items Dim gomr As New Amazon.S3.Model.GetObjectMetadataRequest gomr.BucketName = S3FileDialog.GetBucketName(lvi.SubItems(2).Text) gomr.Key = S3FileDialog.GetPrefix(lvi.SubItems(2).Text) responseTasks.Add(s3client.GetObjectMetadataAsync(gomr), lvi) Next Dim startTime As DateTimeOffset = DateTimeOffset. Now Do While responseTasks.Count > 0 Dim currentTask As Task(Of GetObjectMetadataResponse) = Await Task.WhenAny(responseTasks.Keys) Dim response As GetObjectMetadataResponse = Await currentTask If response.ETag.Trim(""""c) = MD5CalcFile(lvi.SubItems(1).Text) Then lvi.SubItems(3).Text = "Match" UpdateLvi(lvi) End If Loop MsgBox((DateTimeOffset. Now - startTime).ToString) The UI locks up momentarily whenever MDSCalcFile is done. The whole loop takes about 45s and the first file's MD5 result happens within 1s of starting. If I change the line to: If response.ETag.Trim(""""c) = Await Task.Run(Function () MD5CalcFile(lvi.SubItems(1).Text)) Then The UI doesn't lock up when MD5CalcFile is done. The whole loop takes about 75s, up from 45s, and the first file's MD5 result happens after 40s of waiting.

  • finding max in python as per some custom criterion

    - by MK
Hi, I can do max(s) to find the max of a sequence. But suppose I want to compute max according to my own function , something like so - currmax = 0 def mymax(s) : for i in s : #assume arity() attribute is present currmax = i.arity() if i.arity() > currmax else currmax Is there a clean pythonic way of doing this? Thanks!

  • System call time out?

    - by Arnold
Hi, I'm using unix system() calls to gunzip and gzip files. With very large files sometimes (i.e. on the cluster compute node) these get aborted, while other times (i.e. on the login nodes) they go through. Is there some soft limit on the time a system call may take? What else could it be?

  • Longest Common Subsequence

    - by tsudot
Consider 2 sequences X[1..m] and Y[1..n]. The memoization algorithm would compute the LCS in time O(m*n). Is there any better algorithm to find out LCS wrt time? I guess memoization done diagonally can give us O(min(m,n)) time complexity.

  • How do you raise a Java BigInteger to the power of a BigInteger without doing modular arithmetic?

    - by angstrom91
I'm doing some large integer computing, and I need to raise a BigInteger to the power of another BigInteger. The .pow() method does what I want, but takes an int value as an argument. The .modPow method takes a BigInteger as an argument, but I do not want an answer congruent to the value I'm trying to compute. My BigInteger exponent is too large to be represented as an int, can someone suggest a way to work around this limitation?

  • Drawing single pixel in Quartz

    - by wwrob
I have an array of CGPoints, and I'd like to fill the whole screen with colours, the colour of each pixel depending on the total distance to each of the points in the array. The natural way to do this is to, for each pixel, compute the total distance, and turn that into a colour. Questions follow: 1) How can I colour a single pixel in Quartz? I've been thinking of making 1 by 1 rectangles. 2) Are there better, more efficient ways to achieve this effect?

  • How to implement geo-based data store and computation?

    - by Mickey Shine
Well, let me explain this briefly: 1.I want to build a website that provides location based services, like http://fireeagle.yahoo.net/ . 2.I guess most of these services have something do with longitude and latitude. 3.Is there any particular database/datastore/data structures fit well for such apps? I mean easy to store longitude, latitude and easy to compute or easy to use. I am new to this and any feedbacks are welcome
