• How do i set CTRL not to show where the pointer is?

  After recently re-installing, i went through every System Setting and choose exactly how i wanted everthing to be. Except one thing. I'd never seen the Show Cursor on CTRL value before, and wanted to know what it was like. After a while it was simply annoying, whenever i paste of cut in chrome it takes the focus off of the text before i can press V. I have been through eveything in System Settings and can't find it again to disable it. How do i set CTRL not to pulse around the cursor? I will be happy with directions in System Settings, Ubuntu Tweak, or GConf.

• How can I remap my keys to act like the Macintosh keyboard (like hold alt l + l click = r click)?

  I want my keyboard layout to act like a Macintosh keyboard. It's hard to use my computer after years on a mac. I want to disable my right mouse click, and replace it with alt + right mouse click. The alt key will also act like ctrl. I want my left ctrl to be the HUD key. I still want my super key to be the same. Can someone please make a script, or point me in the direction of a program to do all this with ease. If you were to make a script/whatever, can you please make one what will reverse all keyboard changes in-case I feel that it is not the same. I will add to the post if I miss anything. Thank you.

  There are a zillion questions on SO about keyboard shortcuts in Eclipse, but there's I've always wondered if there is an underlying logic to the decisions of which shortcuts would be ctrl+alt+[some letter], and which would be just ctrl+[some letter] etc. Obviously there is a need to use a variety of combinations because there are only so many keys on the keyboard, but why, for example, is "add import" ctrl+shift+m, while "extract method" is alt+shift+m, instead of the other way around? I think if there is some underlying logic to these decisions, it will make it easier to remember more shortcuts without having to scan through the huge right-click menus to find them, and I won't accidentally use the wrong one as often.

• How can I get keyboard shortcuts for certain characters listed in character map that don't have an ALT equivalent listed?

  Does anyone know how to get a complete listing of character map equivalents? For example, look in Windows character map under Arial for ¼ . It says you can type ALT+0188 . But some things do not have an Alt equivalent listed. For example ? only gives its unicode of U+ 1254 and no "Alt number". Obviously you can just copy and paste, but is there a way to find an Alt equivalent for that and other characters so one doesn't need to copy and paste each time? Or any other workaround suggestions? Thanks!

  I just bought a new laptop, and am having to learn Vista. (My desktop has XP.) I was just trying to set some shortcut keys, and wanted to use Alt + Shift + P for Anywho.com, but to my surprise Alt + Shift + P is already taken. It calls Windows Media Player. Now I like WMP and will use it a lot, but I want my Alt + Shift + P for AnyWho.com. BTW I have PC Magazine's Hotkey Detective 2 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,5082,00.asp), but it doesn't show that Alt + Shift + P is taken. How to do this?

But when the grid is dropped on a TabControl tabpage, the ctrl-tab looks very different to the sub above. e.keycode is seen as controlkey {17} I realize that by default cntrl-Tab moves between tabpages. I need to override this behavior. My thought is I probably need a subclass of the tabControl which will pass the keycombo through just as the form does but I confess to being clueless as to how to accomplish that. I tried to override the onkeydown of a tabcontrol subclass and just issuing a return and not and base call to onkeydown if the ctrl-tab combo was pressed but it seemed to see the e.keycode as controlkey as well. FWIW I tried a different combination like ctrl-E and got pretty much the same result with focus disappearing from the grid but not going anywhere I could detect. The sub still saw the e.control as controlkey. Oddly, ctrl-X, ctrl-A etc all work in the grid and a ctrl-Delete combo I put in the subclass for deleting a row works fine. Once again - grid directly on form and it all works. I'm definitely over my head on this one. Guidance much appreciated. vb or c# fine. TIA

  OK my install failed while installing the amd proprietary driver. I keep seeing references to a Nvidia driver, but I do not have or even want anything pertaining to Nvidia.   I am a huge fan of emacs.. But even after 1 year of practising on emacs I am unable to solve these three annoying issues about emacs please help me! 1.Whenever I want to copy the content from emacs into other things such as a website textarea I have to use GUI copy button because ctrl+w doesn't work. Is there any way to do this from emacs-command line. 2.Whenever I delete something using ctrl+shft+SPC or ctrl+k etc I don't want it to be stored in kill ring how do I do it(I know ctrl+D does this but it deletes only one char at a time)? 3.Whenever I select text by mouse and press backspace then text goes into kill ring(Which I want to change as mentioned) but same doesn't happen when I select text with ctrl+SPC(set mark) and then ctrl+f/ctrl+b etc. Please help me!   I've got some problems with the keyboard layout. I have a french AZERTY keyboard. When I switch to another layout (I tested both programmer DVORAK and Greek) everything seems fine. However, in emacs, I have a more unexpected (at least for me) behavior. For example, in DVORAK, I thought to obtain: On my french Keyboard - DVORAK X - Q Alt-X - Alt-Q But I have: X - Q Alt-X - Alt-X When I press the Alt key, the layout change seems to be inactivated. I precise I didn't activated any shortcut containing the Alt key for the layout switching. Moreover, I'm not sure this behavior is restricted to Emacs, but I don't use shortcuts like Alt-... in another application. Is a such behavior normal ? And in this case, how can I use a shortcut like Alt-Q when I switch to DVORAK ?

• Windows 7, how to get unlock (Press Ctrl+Alt+del) prompt on all monitors?

  I have a laptop that I keep shut in a docking station as I have two screens connected to the laptop and it cannot display to both of those AND its own screen. However, when my computer locks by itself (Not when I lock it using Ctrl+Alt+Del) the login prompt is ONLY on it screen (at least its there when I open it up) and my primary external monitor is off and my other one is all black. This means to log in I have to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and blindly enter my password--which I don't mind too much, but would prefer if I could actually see the unlock/login prompt instead of typing on a black screen. Any way to have it show the login prompt on all monitors?

• Why don't the keyboard shortcuts (e.g. hotkeys like Ctrl-C) work in a SharePoint rich-text field?

  I use SharePoint 2010 via Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. I have a standard input mask for a task consisting of text fields, rich-text fields et al. In text fields, I can use keyboard shortcuts (a.k.a. hotkeys) for editing (Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V) and formatting (Ctrl-B/Ctrl-I), but in the richtext field, none of them work. If I click on the appropriate button, however, the expected function is executed properly - but that is a tedious workaround. What could be the cause? Could it be that the Ctrl key is not recognized at all? (BTW: The problem is not reproducible in Firefox, because it doesn't show the rich-text controls at all. Why is another question.)

• Press alt + arrow to skip full line? (Or is there an existing shortcut already..? )

  I am still a fresh Ubuntu user, and I switched from a Mac. What I can do on Mac, is I can press alt + arrow to jump one word forward or backward, or if I press cmd + arrow, I am able to jump to the start or end of the line. And that's what I would like to do in Ubuntu. I would assign it to the alt key, as ctrl is already used to skip words. I use that function a lot when coding, I like to keep my hands on the keyboard and just not touch the mouse at all, and it just saves me time for not having to hold the arrow key until I get to the end of the line (or the skip-a-word combo for that matter), or grabbing the mouse to click at the end, just to add a semicolon or something like that. It's not a huge deal, but that's just what I'm used to. I still keep my Mac partition for incompatibility issues, but I prefer Ubuntu over Mac. If there is already a shortcut to do that, I'd gladly go ahead and try getting comfortable using it, but if it is not, how could I achieve what I described above, if of course it is even possible? • what to do when ctrl-c can't kill a process?

  Ctrl-c doesn't always work to kill the current process (for instance, if that process is busy in certain network operations). In that case, you just see "^C" by your cursor, and can't do much else. What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal? Summary of answers below: Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools. On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.
