  • Architecture for multiple web apps and databases.

    We used to have only one web app, but now we are breaking it down into multiple ones. Each one will be packaged as separate product (web app) Some have things in common some do not. It was originally coded with php and using Postgresql 8.4 and CodeIgniter as the framework. I am looking for some good suggestions on how I should set up multiple web apps. They all have their own somewhat unique data. Some data in the databases can be common to some apps but not all. All the apps will be on one server and will have some kind of API to manipulate data. I want it to be structured such that one User account can access any product they purchase. (kinda like google accounts) I do not know if its a good idea to have multiple database, or just to have one big one. eventually we will be using S3 for some videos and other images. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

  • Java Architecture Decision !!

    Hi everybody! I'm developing a medium Java app, and i'm facing a small problem due to my lack of expirience. I've a custom DAO, which gets "Article" objects from the DataBase. I've the Article class, and the DAO has a method called getArticle(int id), this method returns an Article. The Article has a Category object, and i'm using lazy loading. So, when i request for an Article Category (Article a = new Article(); a.getCategory();) the Article class gets the Category from the DAO and then returns it. I'm now thinking to cache it, so when i request multiple times to an Article's category, the database is only queried one time. My question is: where should i put that cache? I can put it on the Article class (in the DTO), or i can put it on the DAO class. What do you say? Thanks!

  • Reporting system for organization. Architecture advise required

    We have several legacy & 3'd-party systems in organization that use several RDBMS vendors (& more specific data storages). Cross-system data reporting (as well as extra-reports that are not implemented in 3'd-party systems) is required with charts and population of templates (winword, excel). Reporting system is visioned as intranet web-site with custom user access to reports. We expect ~50 reports per day. Would you suggest to use BizTalk or any other integration software if commercial-department doesn't plan to buy anything expensive. Would you suggest to create centralized data storage for reporting that is populated regularly or rely on on-demand services that providers always up-to-request data. Thank you in advance!

    The question of why there are no friends in C# has been extensively discussed. I have the following design problems. I have a class that has only one public function AddOrder(Order ord). Clients are allowed to call only this function. All other logic must be hidden. Order class is listening to market events and must call other other function of TradingSystem ExecuteOrder, so I have to make it public as well.   • Ideal way/architecture to deliver large data over Web Services

    We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

  • Do AOP violate layered architecture for enterprise apps?

    The question(as stated in the title) comes to me as recently i was looking at Spring MVC 3.1 with annotation support and also considering DDD for an upcoming project. In the new Spring any POJO with its business methods can be annotated to act as controller, all the concerns that i would have addressed within a Controller class can be expressed exclusively through the annotations. So, technically i can take any class and wire it to act as controller , the java code is free from any controller specific code, hence the java code could deal with things like checking security , starting txn etc. So will such a class belong to Presentation or Application layer ?? Taking that argument even further , we can pull out things like security, txn mgmt and express them through annotations , thus the java code is now that of the domain object. Will that mean we have fused together the 2 layers? Please clarify

    HI all, Could anyone suggest some good Web based Open source Document Management systems ,other than WSS My requirements are To share pdfs/word docs/excel/access files etc Total 50 files in total of about approx 2MB each, which are updated regularly With aroung 30 users accessing them based on their rights.   • document directory for different iphone app targets

    I have two targets for my app which both unarchive serialized objects, however the objects made by the two apps are not compatible. these objects seem to be saved to the same document directory so that one app will try to unarchive the other's objects. how do I get the apps to create separate sandboxes so they do not have access each others' saved objects? or do I need to just have each version create differently named files?

  • Software Architecture and Design vs Psychology of HCI class

    I have two classes to choose from and I'm wanting to get an opinion from the more experienced game devs which might be better for someone who wants to be an indie game dev. The first is a Software Architecture and Design course and the second is a course titled Psychology of HCI. I've previously have taken a Software Design course that was focused only on design patterns. I've also taken an Introduction to HCI course. Software Architecture and Design Description Topics include software architectures, methodologies, model representations, component-based design ,patterns,frameworks, CASE-based desgins, and case studies. Psychology of HCI Description Exploration of psychological factors that interact with computer interface usablilty. Interface design techniques and usability evaluation methods are emphasized. I know I would find both interesting, but my concern is really which one might be easier to pick up on my own. I know HCI is relevant to game dev, but am un-sure if the topics in the Software Architecture class would be more for big software projects that go beyond the scope of games. Also, I'm not able to take both because the overlap.

  • How Service Component Architecture (SCA) Can Be Incorporated Into Existing Enterprise Systems

    After viewing Rob High’s presentation “The SOA Component Model” hosted on InfoQ.com, I can foresee how Service Component Architecture (SCA) can be incorporated in to an existing enterprise. According to IBM’s DeveloperWorks website, SCA is a set of conditions which outline a model for constructing applications/systems using a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). In addition, SCA builds on open standards such as Web services. In the future, I can easily see how some large IT shops could potently divide development teams or work groups up into Component/Data Object Groups, and Standard Development Groups. The Component/Data Object Group would only work on creating and maintaining components that are reused throughout the entire enterprise. The Standard Development Group would work on new and existing projects that incorporate the use of various components to accomplish various business tasks. In my opinion the incorporation of SCA in to any IT department will initially slow down the number of new features developed due to the time needed to create the new and loosely-coupled components. However once a company becomes more mature in its SCA process then the number of program features developed will greatly increase.   • The Work Order Printing Challenge

    One of the biggest concerns we've heard from maintenance practitioners is the ability to print and batch print work order details along with its accompanying attachments. Indeed, maintenance workers traditionally rely on work order packets to complete their job. A standard work order packet can include a variety of information like equipment documentation, operating instructions, checklists, end-of-task feedback forms and the likes. Now, the problem is that most Asset Lifecycle Management applications do not provide a simple and efficient solution for process printing with document attachments. Work order forms can be easily printed but attachments are usually left out of the printing process. This sounds like a minor problem, but when you are processing high volume of work orders on a regular basis, this inconvenience can result in important inefficiencies. In order to print work order and its related attachments, maintenance personnel need to print the work order details and then go back to the work order and open each individual attachment using the proper authoring application to view and print each document. The printed output is collated into a work order packet. The AutoVue Document Print Service products that were just released in April 2010 aim at helping organizations address the work order printing challenge. Customers and partners can leverage the AutoVue Document Print Services to build a complete printing solution that complements their existing print server solution with AutoVue's document- and platform-agnostic document print services.   • How can I find a list of all SSE instructions? What happens if a CPU doesn't support SSE?

    So I've been reading about how processors work. Now I'm on the instructions (SSE, SSE2, etc) stuff. (Which is pretty interesting). I have lot of questions (I've been reading this stuff on Wikipedia): I've saw the names of some instructions that were added on SSE, however there's no explanation about any of them (Maybe SSE4? They're not even listed on Wikipedia). Where can I read about what they do? How do I know which of these instructions are being used? If we do know which are being used, let's say I'm doing a comparison, (This may be the most stupid question I've ever asked, I don't know about assembly, though) Is it possible to directly use the instruction on an assembly code? (I've been looking at this: http://asm.inightmare.org/opcodelst/index.php?op=CMP) How does the processor interpret the instructions? What would happen if I had a processor without any of the SSE instructions? (I suppose in the case we want to do a comparison, we wouldn't be able to, right?)

    Somewhat related to this question, say that I have an object category which, depending on which type of object I have, has different restrictions on what it contains. (if you can reword the previous sentence to make more sense I'd appreciate it) For example var SomeSchema = new Schema({ _id: ObjectID, [... large number of common fields ...] type: //Restricted somehow to members of a fixed array data: //depending on type, this might be restricted - sometimes an integer, sometimes array, etc... }); What's the idiosyncratic method for defining this type of schema? Is it appropriate to define a single schema, and handle the types inside of it's members, or am I better off with separate schema for each type?

  • 3rd Party Document Management Service

    I am developing an asp.net application that requires users to upload/view various documents. Rather then reinvent the wheel I was thinking about using a 3rd party service like Scribd to handle these documents and integrate it into my app via their API; I really like their ipaper viewer too. My concern is some of these documents will be sensitive data. Even though Scribd's FAQ says they are equipped to handle sensitive information, I am a little hesitant to trust an unpaid service that lacks an SLA. Has anyone used Scribd successfully for a similar task? Or can anyone recommend a better document management service?

  • Java document parsing over internet using POST

    I've looked all around and decided to make my own library for accessing the EVE API. Requests are sent to a server address such as /account/Characters.xml.aspx. Characters.xml.aspx requires two item be submitted in POST and then it returns an XML file. So far I have this but it does not work, probably becuase I am using GET instead of POST: //Get the API data DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder(); String url = "http://api.eveonline.com/account/Characters.xml.aspx?userID="+ userID+"?apiKey="+key; Document doc = builder.parse(url); How would I go about being able to parst an XML file that is generated by submitting variables in POST?

  • Unable to access static var from Document Class in AS3

    I have a Document class called "CityModule", and an asset with class "City". Below is the coe for each. For some reason, I am unable to access the static variables of the City class from CityModule: CityModule.as: package { public class CityModule extends MovieClip { public function CityModule() { var buildings:Array = City.getBuildings(); } } } } City.as: package { import flash.display.MovieClip; public class City extends MovieClip { private static var _buildings:Array = [ {className:'City.Generic1', type:'generic'}, {className:'City.Generic2', type:'generic'}, {className:'City.Generic3', type:'generic'} ]; public function City(){ //empty } public static function getBuildings():Array{ return _buildings; } } } Doing this gives me a "Call to a possibly undefined method getBuildings" error. If I instantiate an instance of City, I can see any public/ getters/ setters perfectly fine. But static isn't working...

  • simple document server built over Apache HTTP server

    Hi, I want to build a simple document server. The requirement for now is : provide a hierarchical directory structure for placing documents (like pdfs, doc files) that is accessible through a browser, and provide the facility to search for documents by name and then be able to download them from server. Right now, placing documents can be done manually (directly place the files into some designated directory). I can do the hierarchical structure part of the problem by adding some configs to Apache's httpd.conf file. Basically I create a root directory for documents and then give an alias to this directory in httpd.conf file. That way, I can browse the directory structure in my browser and also download files placed there. I can provide more detail on this if needed. However, it is the searching documents by name part that I am not able to get to a clear solution yet. I have a few ideas like integrating Lucene with Apache server, or maybe using CouchDb, but I am not very sure of all the details to solve this problem. Could anyone suggest some clear approach as to how to solve this part ?
