• ideas for a personal website [on hold]

  I am planning to register a personal domain + hosting space to be less dependant on external companies. I would like to know if you could share some ideas of what I could do with my own domain. I have been thinking in some of them... Use my own e-mail (but Google Apps is no longer free...). Share my photos instead of using Dropbox. Receiving big files or many files through anonymous FTP. Occasional backups? (I don't know if my host would let me know use the hosting for personal storage). Any other ideas or comments on the above?

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? • On-the-fly file search in gnome 3?

  I recently switched to Gnome 3 (on Onereic 11.10). I was a big fan of gnome-do (on Gnome 2), where I heavily used the "files and folders"-plugin. This allows to configure a list of files and folder to be searched on-the-fly while typing. E.g. starting to type "timesheet" opens "timesheet_2011.ods" from my dropbox account... I can't find anything like this in Gnome 3. I know that there is a list of "recent items", and also the name of bookmarked folders in nautilus is searched, but that's not (exactly) what I'm looking for... So, what I want is this: tell Gnome 3 where my files are (certainly not only in my home folder) have them searched on the fly while I'm typing I think Unity offers something like this - but hey, I'm using Gnome 3 ;-) Anything I missed?

• How do I access and enable more icons to be in the system tray?

  So I'm messing around with Natty a little, and I noticed that all the apps that would normally use the system tray (or "notification area"?) aren't displaying there. Is that a bug, or is that the way it's going to be? I heard something about Ubuntu getting rid of that feature entirely. Is there a way to add it back? I mean, I didn't really like it, either, especially when there were apps that used it unnecessarily, but I can't use CryptKeeper at all now, or easycrypt, and I don't know whether Dropbox has synced without opening Nautilus.

  Prelude: I develop a cloud service which could be described as dropbox meets torrents and as side effect it enables distribution of arbitrary content via magnet links. Certain amount of magnet links will be displayed on the main website (I will be able to remove them one-by-one or ban users but no more). I will not be able to avoid magnets without complete rework of overall project architecture and either way it will hurt overall performance badly, probably making service meaningless. So my question is, what should I do, to avoid legal problems if my site in a nutshell is just a collection of magnet links? Privacy achieved via end-user encryption, so there is almost no access restrictions on the website. And anyway will help me any? Will hosting in particular country help me?

• Getting a texture from a renderbuffer in OpenGL?

  I've got a renderbuffer (DepthStencil) in an FBO and I need to get a texture from it. I can't have both a DepthComponent texture and a DepthStencil renderbuffer in the FBO, it seems, so I need some way to convert the renderbuffer to a DepthComponent texture after I'm done with it for use later down the pipeline. I've tried plenty of techniques to grab the depth component from the renderbuffer for weeks but I always come out with junk. All I want at the end is the same texture I'd get from an FBO if I wasn't using a renderbuffer. Can anyone post some comprehensive instructions or code that covers this seemingly simple operation? • /var/lib/dpkg/lock.....help!

  I had to reinstall the entire OS a little while ago and I have been trying to reinstall all of the programs I had before but I got a bit a of a problem now. I was trying to download dropbox from synaptic but it cannot finish the process and as a result I cannot update anything anymore. The line that comes out is: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? I have tried: sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get -f install sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock sudo apt-get -f update sudo dpkg --clear-selections sudo dpkg --configure -a But nothing seems to work. So is there a way to solve this?? Thanks

• Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

I want to work in companies that are open, innovative, and make a good contribution to the world of computer science. For example, Dropbox looks like a very fun company and its existence is very important. How do I spot this in job advertisements? EDIT: I should note that I live in Australia, so many of the fun companies that I know does not have any office here. I know only a handful of fun companies in Australia – including Google in Sydney. But I don't know that many.

  Sorry my English... hope you understand me... I had a document. Edited it yesterday. But today, when i open it, it was desync. It show an one month earlier version!! I LOST A LOT OF WORK!! And i can't recover my right version of the document! I have a paid plan for Ubuntu One, but this made me very angry. And i don't see a way to recover and don't see a way to talk to somebody! There's no recovery mode like Dropbox... Man, i'm really ANGRY!! REALLY! I'll not recomend Ubuntu One services anymore! I don't know what to do... I lost my work and now i'm one month late! • Combine auto-syncing cloud and VCS

  This question brought me to another question: is there any VCS/tool for a VCS which automatically backups your source code between the last checkout and current changes? I had the problem of loosing uncommited source code changes just one week ago. I did not want to commit yet because the changes were incomplete. But then, an error when moving the data to an USB stick caused the data loss. That's the opposite what a cloud service (like Google Drive, SkyDrive, DropBox, ...) does: it tracks each change you made! Have you lost your data? That's no problem because you have the latest version online. So what would a combined solution look like? It would offer full functionality of a VCS including auto-syncing of any intermediate changes between two commits/checkouts to a temporary online location.

  Haven't seen this kind of error on askubuntu yet. Did everything as it says here: How can I install Adobe AIR? After sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin shows this image: dropbox.com/s/wg6cv03h5n1tqgr/adobe_air.png Meanwhile terminal shows a bunch of such messages: (setup:2579): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine", Nothing is installed. Those murrine - it showed another code before ( another than setup:2579) - I googled it, installed something, it showed another code - I googled it, installed something, etc. Doesn't seem to affect installation anyhow.

• Is there an open source solution that I can host on a web server that will allow users to anonymously upload a file to me?

  I'm looking for some kind of web application I can host on my Linux web server that will allow users to upload files of arbitrary size to me from their browser without requiring them to log in. Ideally this application would allow me to generate a link to my website that allowed for a one-time use upload. It might contain a unique, random key that was only good for that session. I could email them the link, they click it and are taken to a page where they can upload their file to me. I'm mainly targeting friends and family that need to send me files that are too large for email. I don't want to require them to install anything (dropbox), sign up and log in, etc. I'm definitely not teaching them to use FTP. This wouldn't be a difficult project for me to roll on my own but I'd like to take something off the shelf if it is possible. Does anything like this exist that my google-foo isn't turning up?

  I'm using LibGDX v1.1.0 and I see that the label of a TextButton is not properly centered.   I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• Restricted pathfinding Area

  So i'm triying to create a little "XCOM : Enemy Unknown" like game ,and using the Aron Granberg's Pathfinding-Tool (free version) to handle the "click to move part. i want to add a little trap system where the hero get stuck inside an area, so he will have only the possibility to move inside this trapped area, so far everything is fine however when i click outside the trapped area, the hero try to reach the destination even though the wall will prevents him from reaching it. so my question is, is there any way to restrict the area where the pathfinding system work to the trapped area dynamically. and wich Graph Type is recommended to use in this situation or this kind of Games (Grid Graph/Navmesh Graph/Point Graph). • Ubuntu 12.04 appearance

  I have just updated my old Ubuntu 11.04 to the 12.04 version and I really dislike the new appearance. Is there anyway I can go back to the old appearance? Here are some examples of the things I would like to change: the omnipresent orange colour (for example, colour of the folders, colour of the little x on the top right of the window etc.); used to be blue. The icons on the right vertical bar are unreadable: the dropbox icon has become a light grey shapeless blob, the battery icon does not indicate, as it did before, when electricity is plugged in and when it isn't. everything is just grey and orange (I chose the Radiance theme, the other ones are even worse). There used to be a lot of options choosing the shape of the windows and so on, where has all that gone? Thanks for your help!

• How secure is KeePassX?

  I have hundreds of passwords, since I use a different random one for each website/service. They are all generated & stored with KeePassX, which can be synced to different computers and my android phone via dropbox (or ubuntuone). I know the database of KeePassX is secure (at least with a good passphrase). But what about when I am copying the password into the clipboard (where it is stored for 5 seconds)? Can any program running in user-space access the clipboard and store the password? If so, how big of a security risk is this?

• best cloud storage + rsnapshot

  I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But can’t find best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and let’s say, copy newest one to a pendrive at the end of the week. Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. As of rsnapshot, Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs. More over there is no way to make it respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as a full snapshot. Renting a server is pretty expensive so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like in my local host.

• kernel panic - diagnosis?

  I'm having a kernel panic problem - my machine will run for hours, maybe all day and then have a panic attack.
