IBus client for GNU Emacs: Installed, but how do I start it?

Having recently moved to Linux/Ubuntu, I'm looking for a good editor, and GNU Emacs seems to fit the bill. One thing I want from a text editor is the ability to handle Unicode Input Method Editors in a "normal way", across the board. For Ubuntu, the "normal way" is via IBus. However, emacs does not support IBus "off the shelf". I found a launchpad project: IBus client for GNU Emacs: ibus-el. I've installed ibus-el and set it up as per the Customize section of this emacswiki IBusMode page. I included the suggested "toggle" keybinding: ;; Use s-SPC to toggle input status It seems to have installed okay, but I have no idea how to invoke IBus and switch IMEs. s-SPC doesn't fire up the IBus language panel... Write DAX queries in Report Builder #ssrs #dax #ssas #tabular

If you use Report Builder with Reporting Services, you can use DAX queries even if the editor for Analysis Services provider does not support DAX syntax. In fact, the DMX editor that you can use in Visual Studio editor of Reporting Services (see a previous post on that), is not available in Report Builder. However, as Sagar Salvi commented in this Microsoft Connect entry, you can use the DAX query text in the query of a Dataset by using the OLE DB provider instead of the Analysis Services one. I think it’s a good idea to show the steps required. First, create a DataSet using the OLE DB connection type, and provide the connection string the provider (Provider), the server name (Data Source) and the database name (Initial Catalog), such as: Provider=MSOLAP;Data Source=SERVERNAME\\TABULAR;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL 2012 Then, create a Dataset using the data source previously defined, select the Text query type, and write the DAX code in the Query pane: You can also use the Query Designer window, that doesn’t provide any particular help in writing the DAX query, but at least can show a preview of the result of the query execution. Emacs/Vim/Vi - do they have a place in modern software development ecosystem? [closed]

Watching all those screencasts (and listening all those podcasts) with more-or-less famous hackers/programmers I hear that many of those use emacs/vi(m) for their daily work. Now, I myself tried using both emacs and vim, and I honestly cannot understand why would anybody use these for any kind of serious development. The most advertised feature is something along the lines of "you'll be able to work with text (meaning cutting, pasting, duplicating, moving, etc) up to ten times faster than with conventional IDEs", but I don't buy that. When has the success of a software project been defined by how fast a programmer can juggle lines in a text editor or by saving a couple of keystrokes here and there? Plugins and extensions? I bet nothing comes close to R# or IDEA in terms of refactoring support ("Rename" refactoring implemented by means of "Search and Replace" is not a refactoring IMO); others are trivial. Ubiquitous and available everywhere? So what? How often do you find yourself editing files over a 300 baud connection on an esoteric *nix installation without a VCS? So here goes: do said editors have a justified place in a modern software development ecosystem?

Windows 7 resizes desktop when I switch of a monitor

I have a workstation with two monitors and the desktop extended over them. I have a lot of applications open (generally maximized), and I have a personal preference which application is on which monitor (let's say editors on the right, data retrieval and display on the left). I have recently upgraded to a workstation with Windows 7 and when I power off a monitor (typically when going home at the end of the day), the desktop-expand-over-monitors disables and all applications are switched to the main monitor. (Also the taskbar I keep on the left resizes to about one icon's width.) This is highly annoying, since I now spend the first minutes of work each day switching the applications back that were on the monitor on the right. Is there a way to prevent this? (It says no here.) Is there software I could install that can prevent this?

in MVC3 razor we found that their is no way to watch the design in Visual studio as well we can see aspx file by going to design mode. their is a little trick to solve this issue first is that if you have Expression web or Vs 2008 then open the file on them how see here in expression web 4 you need to add the extension .cshtml and open them as html as we open other. in Visual studio 2008 you need to add the extension .cshtml and set them open as html. well their is no big trouble if design not worked. but in some case when you need to get this issue solved this need to be work for configuration do this: Expression Web 4 > tools > application options > configure editor > click on new extension icon show in exact left put the cshtml in the window they show you and choose expression web [open as html] after that you can see the design in expression web. by default Expression web not have cshtml as known extension so you need to do that to add them because without it they never handle cshtml file and refer them to Visual studio. after setting this you EW4 open the cshtml file as html and show you design in design mode. in Visual studio 2008 you can use same trick to solve this issue just follow this step > options > text editors > file extension put cshtml in textbox and set the option html editor from dropdown and click on add and ok this will open your cshtml file as html.

As I am getting more heavily into programming as a job and no longer as a hobby, I am definitely in need of some ways to improve my productivity. One thing that would definitely help in that respect is being able to create customized keyboard shortcuts for text/code snippets. For instance, holding down CMD+L+O+R+E+M will output a paragraph or two of the Lorem ipsum filler text, or CMD+F+U creates a function declaration. What I am ideally looking for is a database where I can store formatted text snippets, bind them to my choice of keystrokes, and then have the text paste whenever I perform the associated keystrokes. Are there any stand-alone applications that can do this for a Mac. Also, are there any text editors / IDEs that have this ability built in?

Inserting an Image into a PDF

Are there Linux/Ubuntu programs capable of inserting a partially transparent image into a PDF? I'm trying to "sign" a PDF document by inserting an image of my signature, but even though every OSX and Windows PDF editor seems to support this, I haven't found any Linux PDF editors that do. I've tried PDFChain, PDF Editor, Flpsed PDF Annotator, Openoffice, Scribus, Krita, and PDFSam, and none support this. Although not technically a Linux program, I tried the site pdfescape.com, but it corrupts the images it inserts, rendering it useless for this task. Note, I'm talking about keeping the PDF in PDF format, so rasterizing it to a TIF/PNG/BMP, editing it in Gimp, and then dumping it back into a PDF isn't a solution. EDIT: I might have been premature in my criticism of pdfescape.com and PDF Editor. I was viewing the resulting PDF in Evince, which was showing a mangled image, but when I opened the PDF in PDF Editor, the image rendered correctly. I've since sent the PDF to someone on Windows who confirmed the image showed correctly. It looks like the problem might be inaccurate rendering with Evince.

Any program or editor in windows 7 to run ".md" files

I understand that '.md' is an extension for markdown format. While installing 'Grunt' from GitHub I see a lot of .md extension files inside node_module/grunt/docs folder. As per my understanding these files are supported by GitHub for documentation kind of things if I am not wrong. My question here is - Are there any editors/tools or programs available for Windows 7 where I can see these .md files executing ? When I try to open any of these file inside my text editor it displays in raw format with all '#" etc. keywords. I want to see the formatted version of these files so that without an internet connection also I can navigate the documentation on my machine. Thanks for helping !!

How to diagram custom programming languages, non textual?

I've used and created domain-specific languages before, plenty of times (e.g. using yacc/lex). Normally we'd start with grammar written in BNF, and a bunch of keywords. This is easy to do, easy to share. Recently, I've started working with diagrammatic programming languages - closest parallel is circuit-diagrams in electronics, where it's very difficult to express ideas in text, but very easy to express them in wiring-diagrams. This is a new and novel problem for me: how to efficiently express these mini-languages, and share concepts in them with colleagues? (i.e. how to whiteboard-program within them. Actual programming is easy - you have physical components to hand) Are there tools for this? Or good/best practices (e.g. equivalent of "always use BNF as starting point for your new DSL, and use tools like yacc to generate the parser, compiler, etc"). My googlefu is proving weak - all I get is false positives for wiring diagrams, and UML editors (since these are custom languages, UML doesn't seem to help)

Handling UTF-8 with BOM in HTTP

Say I have a script which at some point serves a plain text file as a content (right after "\n\n"). These files are provided by users, but I can expect they will be UTF-8. So I hard-wire Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8. But while I can teach users to save everything in UTF-8, I can't be very sure that the files will be without BOM ("\xEE\xBB\xBF"), as at least on Windows, this is not very clearly distinguished in common plain text editors and not every one of them uses the same default. So what about these files created on Windows, where they may/may not start with BOM? Should/will server or UA get rid of this debris for me? Or is it my task to prepare clean UTF-8, i.e. open each file and check whether BOM needs to be removed?

Should the syntax for disabling code differ from that of normal comments?

For several reasons during development I sometimes comment out code. As I am chaotic and sometimes in a hurry, some of these make it to source control. I also use comments to clarify blocks of code. For instance: MyClass MyFunction() { (...) // return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; } Even though it "works" and alot of people do it this way, it annoys me that you cannot automatically distinguish commented-out code from "real" comments that clarify code: it adds noise when trying to read code you cannot search for commented-out code for for instance an on-commit hook in source control. Some languages support multiple single-line comment styles - for instance in PHP you can either use // or # for a single-line comment - and developers can agree on using one of these for commented-out code: # return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; Other languages - like C# which I am using today - have one style for single-line comments (right? I wish I was wrong). I have also seen examples of "commenting-out" code using compiler directives, which is great for large blocks of code, but a bit overkill for single lines as two new lines are required for the directive: #if compile_commented_out return null; // TODO: dummy for now #endif return obj; So as commenting-out code happens in every(?) language, shouldn't "disabled code" get its own syntax in language specifications? Are the pro's (separation of comments / disabled code, editors / source control acting on them) good enough and the cons ("shouldn't do commenting-out anyway", not a functional part of a language, potential IDE lag (thanks Thomas)) worth sacrificing? Edit I realise the example I used is silly; the dummy code could easily be removed as it is replaced by the actual code.

Font corruption: lines through characters

I have an odd problem where a one-pixel high white line is displayed through certain letters of text. Almost always only a single character type is affected at once, and only in one font size (though that size can change over time). Most of the time things are fine, but this happens several times a day. It's been happening ever since I upgraded to 10.10. I have noticed few patterns: It might be a problem with Firefox (I'm currently using the nightly ppa, but it occurred in 3.6 also) - but this could just be because I spend most of my time on my computer either at a browser or text editors. I seem to remember it happening with the buttons on various Gnome dialogs. It never occurs in text I've typed, be it an email, url bar, etc. In Firefox it happens across tabs, and the problem remains even if they are closed or reloaded; only restarting the program can fix it. Two examples (in the first, only the larger "r" is corrupted): Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The Tex Live included in Ubuntu 12.04 is very old (2009), and I would like to install the latest version to be able to edit the Ubuntu manual. How do I do that from the terminal? Hello, my name is Chris. I am a student pursuing a career in technical writing and I would like to assist the Ubuntu community while gaining experience & building my resume. I need to install upstream version of TeX Live for 12.04 to edit the manual for Ubuntu. Help with converting an XML into a 2D level (Actionscript 3.0)

I'm making a little platformer and wanted to use Ogmo to create my level. I've gotten everything to work except the level that my code generates is not the same as what I see in Ogmo. I've checked the array and it fits with the level in Ogmo, but when I loop through it with my code I get the wrong thing. I've included my code for creating the level as well as an image of what I get and what I'm supposed to get. Choosing open source vs. proprietary CMS

Hi- I've been tasked with redesigning a website for a small academic library. While only in charge of the site for 6 months, we've been maintaining static html pages edited in Dreamweaver for years. Last count of our total pages is around 400. Our university is going with an enterprise level solution called Sitefinity, although we maintain our own domain and are responsible to maintain our own presense. Some background-my library has a couple Microsoft IIS servers on which this static html site has been running. I'm advocating for the implementation of a CMS while doing this redesign. The problem is I'm basically the lone webmaster so I have no one to agree or disagree with my choice. There are also only 1-2 content editors right know for the site but a CMS could change that factor. I would like to use the functionality of having servers that run .NET and MS SQL but am more experience setting up and maintaining open source software like Wordpress or Drupal on web hosts. My main concern is choosing a CMS that will be easy to update / maintain / deal with upgrades (i.e., support) in case I'm not there in the future. So I'm wondering how to factor in the open source CMS vs. a relatively inexpensive commercial CMS decision and whether choosing PHP/MySQL vs. ASP.net framework for development environment will play into my decision. How do you save/export changes made in Firebug?

Using Firebug to edit CSS, how do I save/export changes made to the CSS? TOOLS: Firefox, Firebug MAJOR UPDATE: If you know of a way to lock the forward/back/refresh on a FireFox tab, please let me know. Otherwise, I've given up on using FireBug/FireDiff as an IDE for CSS, it's nice, but lol... press backspace at the wrong time and ALL your work is gone... funny. So, really like the browser highlighting to CSS/HTML in Firebug. Know any good CSS editors that do this? Really had hope FireBug would work, but for now only see it as being good for ad-hoc inspection and test; meaning using it for what it's made for. UPDATES: @Lèse majesté: Just as an update, "Web Developer add-on" does let you edit CSS, but it does not let you edit/save CSS changes made by Firebug. Meaning you use Firebug to ID and maybe test changes, but it does not let you save the changes from Firebug. Here's a "how to" covering how to use them together: FF + FB + WD @Lèse majesté: Still playing around with FireDiff. It works okay, found one bug already (although I'm just working around it), and there's no "how to" I've been able to find, so I'm just trying every feature and clicking around... (for example, to export a diff you must be over the last item in the list, right click, and select as "Save Diff". The ".diff" is just a text file, no idea why at this point the ext is .diff.

VIM is great for text. Is there, too, an efficient, mouseless way to manipulate files on OS X?

I am having trouble navigating through files on OS X. That is, creating files, copying, moving, and so on. I am currently using the Finder, but the act of clicking with the mouse is not very efficient. Acessing a deep folder takes a considerable amount of time and you'll have to know it's entire path. When I try to use the command line it is even worse. Going to a folder requires at least typing it's entire path with the 'cd' command; and, when you are there, you don't have full control over it. For example, how would you move 3 specific files to another folder? Some text editors offer a 'fuzzy search' function that allows a very fast form of jumping through files. What is a fast, efficient way to navigate through files on OS X?

Using HTML5 Today part 4–What happened to XHTML?

This is the fourth entry in a series of descriptions & demos from the “Using HTML5 Today” user group presentation. For practical purposes, the original XHTML standard is a historical footnote, although XHTML transitional will probably live on forever in the default web page templates of old web page editors. The original XHTML spec was released in 2000, on the heels of the HTML 4.01 spec. The plan was to move web development away from HTML to the more formal, rigorous approach that XHTML offered, but it was built on a principle that conflicts with the history and culture of the Internet: XHTML introduced the idea of Draconian Error Handling, which essentially means that invalid XML markup on a page will cause a page to stop rendering. There is a transitional mode offered in the original XHTML spec, but the goal was to move to D.E.H. You can see the result by changing the doc type for a document to “application/xhtml+xml” - for my class example we change this setting in the web.config file: <staticContent> <remove fileExtension=".html" /> <mimeMap fileExtension=".html" mimeType="application/xhtml+xml" /> </staticContent> With the new strict syntax a simple error, in this case a duplicate </td> tag, can cause a critical page error: While XHTML became very popular in the ensuing decade, the Strict form of XHTML never achieved widespread use. Draconian Error Handling was one of the factors that led in time to the creation of the WHATWG, or Web Hypertext Application Technology Group. WHATWG contributed to the eventually disbanding of the XHTML 2.0 working group and the W3C’s move to embrace the HTML5 standard. For developers who long for XML markup the W3C HTML5 standard includes an XHTML5 syntax. emacs keybindings

I read a lot about vim and emacs and how they make you much more productive, but I didn't know which one to pick. Finally when I decided to teach myself common lisp, the decision was straight forward: everybody says that there's no better editor for common lisp, than emacs + slime. So I started with emacs tutorial and immediately I ran into something that seems very unproductive to me. I'm talking about key bindings for cursor keys: forward/backward: Ctrl+f, Ctrl+b up/down: Ctrl+p, Ctrl+n I find these bindings very strange. I assume that fingers should be on their home rows (am I wrong here?), so to move cursor forward or backward I should use my left index finger and for up and down right pinky and right index fingers. When working with any of Windows IDEs and text editors to navigate text I usually place my right hand in a position so that my thumb is on the right ctrl and my index, ring and middle fingers are on the cursor keys. From this position it is very easy and comfortable to move cursor: I can do one-character moves with my 3 right fingers, or I can press ctrl with my right thumb and do word-moves instead. Also I can press shift with my left pinky and do single-character or word selections. Also it is a very comfortable position to reach PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, Delete and Backspace keys with my right hand. So I have even more navigation and selection possibilities. I understand that the decision not to use cursor keys is to allow one to use emacs to connect to remote terminal sessions, where these keys are not supported, but I still find the choice of cursor keys very unfortunate. Why not to use j, k, i, l instead? This way I could use my right hand without much finger stretching. So how is emacs more productive? What am I doing wrong?

To decide where to crop an image, how can I highlight it's most compressible areas?

I'm looking to get the most compression out of each of the most popular image formats, such as, JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc. Ideally, this would be a tool, or a series of transforms that could be performed (perhaps using a macro and then discarded) in popular image editors (Paint.NET/PaintShopPro/PhotoShop/GIMP) to highlight areas which will compress less. Alternatively, what rules of thumb can be used other than reducing colours (for PNG/GIF), reducing image dimensions, avoiding high detail areas... I'm not asking for help deciding what format to use for a particular image type as I think this is fairly common knowledge, i.e. diagram and images with few colours = PNG/GIF, photographs = JPEG.

What does SVN do better than git?

No question that the majority of debates over programmer tools distill to either personal choice (by the user) or design emphasis, i.e., optimizing design according to particular uses cases (by the tool builder). Text Editors are probably the most prominent example--a coder who works on a Windows at work and codes in Haskell on the Mac at home, values cross-platform and compiler integration and so chooses Emacs over Textmate, etc. It's less common that a newly introduced technology is genuinely, demonstrably superior to the extant options. I wonder if this is in fact the case with version-control systems, in particular, centralized VCS (CVS, SVN) versus distributed VCS (git, hg)? I used SVN for about five years, and SVN is currently used where I work. A little less than three years ago, I switched to git (and gitHub) for all of my personal projects. I can think of a number of advantages of git over subversion (and which for the most part abstract to advantages of distributed over centralized VCS), but I cannot think of one contra example--some task (that's relevant and arises in a programmers usual workflow) that subversion does better than git. The only conclusion I have drawn from this is that I don't have any data--not that git is better, etc. My guess is that such counter-examples exist, hence this question.

Graceful logout in dwm

I want dwm to close all windows gracefully when I press quit hotkey. I like Unity behaviour: it displays list of windows denying logout (for example, editors with unsaved changes) and do not logout before all issues are resolved and applications are closed. By default, dwm just end X session and all running applications are killed. I was thinking about writing a script that will retrieve list of all windows, gracefully close them and wait for their processes to finish. But I even don't know how to close windows. The only way I know is using wmctrl, and this utility doesn't work with dwm.

Problem with Ctrl key on a hp 2510p

I have a tricky problem with my corporate Compaq hp 2510p, the ctrl key is not working properly at all times. I belive that it is hooked in some filter chain that processes certain ctrl+[key] combinations which is very annoying. I would like some pointers on how to proceed when analysing what application/setup can can cause this kind of keyboard filtering to happen. Anyway some more background info: Ctrl works together with X, C, V. Both in editors and terminals (Ctrl-C, Z etc) but Ctrl-Shift-Esc and Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work. Very annoying so my only option for logging in us using HP's security app. Shift-Arrow works for selecting text, but not Ctrl-shift arrow to select word by word, but Ctrl-Arrow works when moving the caret word by word. Now the strange thing is that everything works ok with an external USB keyboard so it might be the driver, but still, google yields 0 when searching for the problem description. I have vm-ware player installed (but not running it), HP Protect Tools installed, if any of these could affect the keyboard driver.
