  • 3d Model Scaling With Camera

    I have a very simple 3D maze program that uses a first person camera to navigate the maze. I'm trying to scale the blocks that make up the maze walls and floor so the corridors seem more roomy to the camera. Every time I scale the model, the camera seems to scale with it, and the corridors always stay the same width. I've tried apply the scale to the model in the content pipe (setting the scale property of the model in the properties window in VS). I've also tried to apply the scale using Matrix.CreateScale(float) using the Scale-Rotate-Transform order with the same result. If I leave the camera speed the same, the camera moves slower, so I know it's traversing a larger distance, but the world doesn't look larger; the camera just seems slower. I'm not sure what part of the code to include since I don't know if it is an issue with my model, camera, or something else. Any hints at what I'm doing wrong?   • Client Side Prediction for a Look Vector

    So I am making a first person networked shooter. I am working on client-side prediction where I am predicting player position and look vectors client-side based on input messages received from the server. Right now I am only worried about the look vectors though. I am receiving the correct look vector from the server about 20 times per second and I am checking that against the look vector that I have client side. I want to interpolate the clients look vector towards the correct one that is server side over a period of time. Therefore no matter how far you are away from the servers look vector you will interpolate to it over the same amount of time. Ex. if you were 10 degrees off it would take the same amount of time as if you were 2 degrees off to be correctly lined up with the server copy. My code looks something like this but the problem is that the amount that you are changing the clients copy gets infinitesimally small so you will actually never reach the servers copy. This is because I am always calculating the difference and only moving by a percentage of that every frame.   • First impressions of Scala

    I have an idea that it may be possible to predict build success/failure based on commit data. Why Scala? It’s a JVM language, has lots of powerful type features, and it has a linear algebra library which I’ll need later. Project definition and build Neither maven or the scala build tool (sbt) are completely satisfactory. This maven **archetype** (what .Net folks would call a VS project template) mvn archetype:generate `-DarchetypeGroupId=org.scala-tools.archetypes `-DarchetypeArtifactId=scala-archetype-simple `-DremoteRepositories=http://scala-tools.org/repo-releases `-DgroupId=org.SW -DartifactId=BuildBreakPredictor gets you started right away with “hello world” code, unit tests demonstrating a number of different testing approaches, and even a ready made `.gitignore` file - nice! But the Scala version is behind at v2.8, and more seriously, compiling and testing was painfully slow. So much that a rapid edit – test – edit cycle was not practical. So Lab49 colleague Steve Levine tells me that I can either adjust my pom to use fsc – the fast scala compiler, or use sbt. Sbt has some nice features It’s fast – it uses fsc by default It has a continuous mode, so  `> ~test` will compile and run your unit test each time you save a file It’s can consume (and produce) Maven 2 dependencies the build definition file can be much shorter than the equivalent pom (about 1/5 the size, as repos and dependencies can be declared on a single line) And some real limitations Limited support for 3rd party integration – for instance out of the box, TeamCity doesn’t speak sbt, nor does IntelliJ IDEA Steeper learning curve for build steps outside the default Side note: If a language has a fast compiler, why keep the slow compiler around? Even worse, why make it the default? I choose sbt, for the faster development speed it offers. Syntax Scala APIs really like to use punctuation – sometimes this works well, as in the following map1 |+| map2 The `|+|` defines a merge operator which does addition on the `values` of the maps. It’s less useful here: http(baseUrl / url >- parseJson[BuildStatus] sure you can probably guess what `>-` does from the context, but how about `>~` or `>+`? Language features I’m still learning, so not much to say just yet. However case classes are quite usefull, implicits scare me, and type constructors have lots of power. Community A number of projects, such as https://github.com/scalala and https://github.com/scalaz/scalaz are split between github and google code – github for the src, and google code for the docs. Not sure I understand the motivation here.

PosterCatID)        {            PosterContext ctx = new PosterContext();            IQueryable<Poster> query = ctx.Posters;            if (PosterCatID.HasValue && PosterCatID > 0)            {                query = query.Where(p=>p.PosterCategoryID==PosterCatID);            }            return query;                    } This is a very simple method that returns information about posters related to the PosterCatID passed to it.I bind the value from the query string to the PosterCatID parameter at run time.This is all possible due to the QueryStringAttribute class that lives inside the System.Web.ModelBinding and gets the value of the query string variable id.5) I run my application and then click on the "Midfilders" link. Have a look at the picture below to see the results.  In the Site.css file I added some new CSS rules to make everything more presentable. .posters-featured {    width:840px;    background-color:#efefef;}.posters-featured   a:link, a:visited,    a:active, a:hover {        color: #000033;    }.posters-featured    a:hover {        background-color: #85c465;    }  6) I run the application again and this time I do not choose any category, I simply navigate to the PosterList.aspx page.     I am trying to install a package via pip, but there were missing files from the zip file. So I copy the files and then compile with gcc. But now I cannot continue with the installation by calling pip install because it sees a pre-existing directory and will not proceed. This is with pip version 1.5.6, but I thought that with earlier versions of pip that it was less fussy about this. What are the remaining steps to complete the package installation?

  • troubleshooting steps for site that requires refresh to load

    How does one troubleshoot a site that loads sometimes, but then requires a reload at other times... sometimes it loads, sometimes it hangs and a refresh is required, sometimes more than once. What would you do in this situation? I'm just looking for basic troubleshooting steps to start me going in the right direction. In the meantime I'll be poking around in Chrome's "Inspect Element" but if there's specific things I should look at first let me know.

  • Web Development Trends: Mobile First, Data-Oriented Development, and Single Page Applications

    I recently had the opportunity to give a keynote talk at an Intel conference about key trends in the world of Web development that I feel teams should be taking into account with projects. It was a lot of fun and I had the opportunity to talk with a lot of different people about projects they’re working on. There are a million things that could be covered for this type of talk (HTML5 anyone?) but I only had 60 minutes and couldn’t possibly cover them all so I decided to focus on 3 key areas: mobile, data-oriented development, and SPAs. The talk was geared toward introducing people (many who weren’t Web developers) to topics such as mobile first development (demos showed a few tools to help here), responsive design techniques, data binding techniques that can simplify code, and Single Page Application (SPA) benefits.
