• Cheap Wifi enabled Android or other programmable device

  Does anyone know of a cheap Android or programmable device that has wifi? I need it for a project for a company that needs a wifi handheld device for the shop floor. Im not too fussed about the language the device uses though Im not really interested in the iTouch as theres no intention to release the app in the app store and I don`t really want to jail break everybodys iTouch. Ideally it would be small , iTouch size for example and relatively cheap $100 or less. Nothing fancy just ability to write a simple UI and have wifi. Voice is not needed. Not too fussed about touch or qwerty keyboard either.

• jQuery fadeOut() function doesn't ALWAYS work in Chrome, Firefox, IE

  Sometimes, the slideshow on my website, which uses fadeOut and fadeIn to cycle through three main images, will fadeIn a new photo without fading in the old one. This doesn't happen every time the page loads though.   I'm very new to java and am working on my first Android app. I am using the webview demo as a template. I am trying to generate a random integer between 1 and 12 and then call a certain javascript function based on the result. Here's what I have: int number = 1 + (int)(Math.random() * ((12 - 1) + 1)); number = (int) Math.floor(number); String nextQuote = "javascript:wave" + number + "()"; mWebView.loadUrl(nextQuote); So mWebView.loadUrl(nextQuote) will be the same as something like mWebView.loadUrl("javascript:wave1()") I just want to know if what I have here is correct and will work the way I think it will. The application isn't responding as expected and I suspect this bit of code is the culprit.

I need the cubes to load a split second from each other.   Hello, So i have a 2 dimensional array that is used over several pages (session) $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [0] = $filename; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [1] = $size; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [2] = $floor; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [3] = $phone; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [4] = $network; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [5] = $totalprice; This is used with a form so i can give in multiple input wich gets stored. But my question is how exactly can i calculate the AVERAGE of $total price of all given in results? Meaning for example i have 5 rows so this would mean 5 total prices. How exactly can i acces this value and count everything up / 5? This will happen in a other page so i would like to use sessions for this. /5 simply by count($_Session["table"]) , but really not sure about the other values. Kind Regards.

• Reconstructing simple 3d enviroment(room) from photo

  I have photo of a room with three walls and floor/ceiling or both. I am trying to reconstruct this room in 3d asking user for minimal input. Right now I use 8 points defined by user, angles of left and right wall(they can be quite different from 90) and one size "InLeftBottom-InRightBottom"(I need to have real size of this room for later use). I have no info about user's camera(I can read EXIF to get FOV and use constant height but this can be only used as additional info). Is this possible to ask user for less info? Maybe it's possible to get wall angles without user interaction? Or maybe I am completly wrong and should use different approach?

• Fast ceiling of an integer division in C / C++

  Given integer values x and y, C and C++ returns as the quotient q = x/y the floor of the floating point valued equivalent. I'm interestd in a method of returning the ceiling instead? For example, ceil(10/5) = 2 and ceil(11/5) = 3. The obvious approach involves something like: q = x / y; if (q * y < x) ++q; This requires an extra comparison and multiplication; and other methods I've seen (used in fact) involve casting as a float or double. Is there a more direct method that avoids the additional multiplication (or a second division) and branch, and that also avoids casting as a floating point number?

• MySQL: Records inserted by hour, for the last 24 hours

  I'm trying to list the number of records per hour inserted into a database for the last 24 hours. Each row displays the records inserted that hour, as well as how many hours ago it was. Here's my query now: SELECT COUNT(*), FLOOR( TIME_TO_SEC( TIMEDIFF( NOW(), time)) / 3600 ) FROM `records` WHERE time > DATE_SUB(NOW(), INTERVAL 24 HOUR) GROUP BY HOUR(time) ORDER BY time ASC right now it returns: 28 23 62 23 14 20 1 4 28 3 19 1 That shows two rows from 23 hours ago, when it should only show one per hour. I think it has something to do with using NOW() instead of getting the time at the start of the hour, which I'm unsure on how to get. There must be a simpler way of doing this.

  I have a function. I pass to it an object with a list of questions and answers. I generate a random number from a range equal to the number of questions in the object. The script check to see if that question has been asked, and if not, it asks it, the correct answer is then passed to a variable correct. I want to give 4 possible answers, each one randomly selected from the list of possible answers. I have this. I just want to know what is the best way to ensure that the correct answer is placed in the list. So far, this is what I have: it puts four answers into four targeted boxes. • casting odd smallint time to to datetime format.

  Hello everyone, I'm working with a db (SQL server 2008), and have an interesting issue with times stored in the db. The DBA who originally set it up was crafty and stored scheduled times as smallints in 12-hour form-- 6:00AM would be represented as 600. I've figured out how to split them into hours and minutes like thus: select floor(time/100) as hr, right(time, 2) as min from table; What I want to do is compare these scheduled times to actual times, which are stored in the proper datetime format. Ideally, I would do this with two datetime fields and use datediff() between them, but this would require converting the smallint time into a datetime, which I can't figure out. Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this? Thanks in advance.

  I've seen the other examples on this site but I just can't get it to work. I'm trying to generate a random number between 2 user input variables on a form. The numbers will always be positive numbers. min = document.getElementById('min').value; max = document.getElementById('max').value; waitTimer = Math.floor(Math.random() * (max - min + 1)) + min; When min = 5 / max = 10, waitTimer is sometimes returning results like 2, 4 and 28 and so on. What am I doing wrong?

• how to calculate the beginning of a day given milliseconds?

  i want to figure out the time from the beginning of the day given a days milliseconds. so say i'm given this: 1340323100024 which is like mid day of 6/21/2012. now i want the milliseconds from the beginning of the day, which would be 1340262000000 (at least i think that's what it's supposed to be.) how do i get 1340262000000 from 1340323100024? i tried doing Math.floor(1340323100024/86400000) * 86400000 but that gives me 1340236800000, which if i create a date object out of it, says its the 20th. i know i can create a date object from 1340323100024, then get the month, year, and date, to create a new object which would give me 1340262000000, but i find it ridiculous i can't figure out something so simple. any help would be appreciated. btw, i'm doing this in javascript if it makes any difference.

• Memcached in a trusted shared environment?

  We are a university IT organization that hosts all of the university's websites on several shared servers on our server room floor. We have several VMs, each running its own instance of Apache as a web server for each respective server. If we were going to setup a memcached server, is it feasible to use it as a shared instance? If shared by several servers, or even multiple web apps running on the same server, what's the best way to keep each app's cache stores separate? Prefix the key? Would each VM require its own instance of memcached, or could we setup 1 memcached server and allow our multiple VMs to read/write to it?

  hi there for some reason i convert a time format like : 03:30 to seconds 3*3600 + 30*60 , now .. i wanna convert it back to it's first ( same ) format upthere ... how could that be ? My attempt : 3*3600 + 30*60 = 12600 12600 / 60 = 210 / 60 = 3.5 , floor(3.5) = 3 = hour now .. what about the minutes ?? considering the value can be like 19:00 or 02:51 ... i think you got the picture and by the way, how to convert 2:0 for example to 02:00 using RegEx ? Here is what I'm thinking could possibly work right now, could someone correct this if I'm wrong: divide (x,y) if x=0: return (0,0) //(quotient, remainder) (q,r) = divide(floor(x/2), y) q=2q, r=2r if x is odd: r = r+1 if r >= y: r = r-y, q = q+1 return (q,r) Would you guys say that this general pseudocode algorithm would accomplish the intended task of dividing n-bit numbers or am I missing something in my psuedocode before I start coding up something that's wrong?

• Grounded in Dublin

  Friday's hands-on workshop in the Oracle office in Dublin was quite good fun for everybody - except for Mick who has just recognized that his Ryanair flight back to Cork has been canceled (So I hope you've returned home well!) and me as my flights back to Munich via London City had been canceled as well. It's always good to have somebody in the workshop from Air Lingus so I've got hourly information what's going in in the Irish airspace (and now I know that the system dealing with such situations is an well prepared Oracle database which runs just like a switch watch - Thanks again for all your support!!! Was great to talk to you!!!). But to be honest, there are worse places to be grounded for a few days than Dublin. At least it gave me the chance to do something which I never had time enough before when visiting Oracle Ireland: a bit of sightseeing. When I've realized that nothing seems to move over the weekend I started organizing my travel back yesterday. It was no fun at all because there's no single system to book such a travel. Figuring out all possibilities and options going back to Munich was the first challange. Irish Ferries webpage was moaning with all the unexpected load (currently it's fully down). Hotel booking websites showed vacancies in Holyhead but didn't let me book. And calling them just reveiled that there are no rooms left. Haven't stayed overnight in a train station for quite a while ;-) The website of VirginTrains puzzled me with offering a seat at an enormous price for a train ride from Holyhead to London Euston (Thanks, Sir Richard Branson!) just to tell me after I booked a ticket that there are no seats left (but I traveled German railsways a few weeks ago from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt sitting on the floor as well). Eurostar's website let me choose tickets through the tunnel to tell me in the final step that the ticket cannot be confirmed as there are no seats left - but the next check again showed bookable seats - must be a database from some other vendor which has no proper row level locking ... hm ...?! Finally the TGV page for the speed train to Stuttgart and then the ICE to Munich was not allowing searches for quite a while - but ultimately ... after 4.5 hours of searching, waiting, sending credit card information again and again ... So if you have a few spare fingers please keep them crossed :-) And good luck to all my colleagues traveling back from the Exadata training in Berlin. As Mike Appleyard, my colleague from the UK presales team wrote: "Dublin and Berlin aren't too bad a place to get stuck... ;-)"

• Best of "The Moth" 2010

  It is the time again (like in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) to look back at my blog for the past year and identify areas of interest that seem to be more prominent than others. After doing so, representative posts follow in my top 5 list (in random order). 1. This was the year where I had to move for the first time since 2004 my blog engine (blogger.com –> dasBlog), host provider (zen –> godaddy), web server technology and OS (apache on Linux –> IIS on Windows Server). My goal was not to break any permalinks or the look and feel of this website. A series of posts covered how I achieved that goal, culminating in a tool for others to use if they wanted to do the same: Tool to convert blogger.com content to dasBlog. Going forward I aim to be sharing more small code utilities like that one… 2. At work I am known for being fairly responsive on email, and more importantly never dropping email balls on the floor. This is due to my email processing system, which I shared here: Processing Email in Outlook. I will be sharing more tips with regards to making the best of the Office products. 3. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the year people will remember as the one where Microsoft finally fights back in the mobile space. Even though the new platform means my Windows Mobile book sales will dwindle :-), I am ecstatic about Windows Phone 7 both as a consumer and as a developer. On the release day, to get you started I shared the top 10 Windows Phone 7 developer resources. I will be sharing my tips from my experience in writing code for and consuming this new platform… 4. For my HPC developer friends using Visual Studio, I shared Slides and code for MPI Cluster Debugger and also gave you all the links you need for getting started with Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR. Expect more from me on cluster development in the coming year… 5. Still in the HPC space, but actually also in the game and even mainstream development, the big disruption and opportunity comes in the form of GPGPU and, on the Microsoft platform, (currently) DirectCompute.
