  • Pseudorandom Number Generation with Specific Non-Uniform Distributions

    Hello all, I'm writing a program that simulates various random walks (with differing distributions). At each timestep, I need randomly generated, two dimensional step distances and angles from the distribution of the random walk. I'm hoping someone can check my understanding of how to generate these random numbers. As I understand it I can use Inverse Transform Sampling as follows: If f(x) is the pdf of our random walk that has a non-uniform distribution, and y is a random number from a uniform distribution. Then if we let f(x) = y and solve to find x then we have a random number from the non-uniform distribution. Is this a feasible solution?

  • Merging /boot and rearranging grub2 entries

    I have used 10.10 and now for testing purposes installed 10.04 to a separate partition. 10.10 is currently on a single partition, while for 10.04 I decided to separate /boot to a third partition. Now my questions: How can I move and merge 10.10's /boot on the new /boot partition What do I have to modify to rearrange the (automatic) entries? How can I have the entries contain the distribution name to reduce confusion? How can I make sure the grub configuration stays identical when either distribution updates?

  • Creating Corporate Windows Phone Applications

    Most developers write Windows Phone applications for their own gratification and their own wallets.  While most of the time I would put myself in the same camp, I am also a consultant.  This means that I have corporate clients who want corporate solutions.  I recently got a request for a system rebuild that includes a Windows Phone component.  This brought up the questions of what are the important aspects to consider when building for this situation. Let’s break it down in to the points that are important to a company using a mobile application.  The company want to make sure that their proprietary software is safe from use by unauthorized users.  They also want to make sure that the data is secure on the device. The first point is a challenge.  There is no such thing as true private distribution in the Windows Phone ecosystem at this time.  What is available is the ability to specify you application for targeted distribution.  Even with targeted distribution you can’t ensure that only individuals within your organization will be able to load you application.  Because of this I am taking two additional steps.  The first is to register the phone’s DeviceUniqueId within your system.  Add a system sign-in and that should cover access to your application. The second half of the problem is securing the data on the phone.  This is where the ProtectedData API within the System.Security.Cryptography namespace comes in.  It allows you to encrypt your data before pushing it to isolated storage on the device. With the announcement of Windows Phone 8 coming this fall, many of these points will have different solutions.  Private signing and distribution of applications will be available.  We will also have native access to BitLocker.  When you combine these capabilities enterprise application development for Windows Phone will be much simpler.  Until then work with the above suggestions to develop your enterprise solutions. del.icio.us Tags: Windows Phone 7,Windows Phone,Corporate Deployment,Software Design,Mango,Targeted Applications,ProtectedData API,Windows Phone 8

    I downloaded 12.10 a day after it was released. It is a little buggy in my system - shows the errors such as a problem has occurred frequently. The developers probably have fixed most of the issues by now. So I was wondering if I was to download a fresh copy of the distribution from ubuntu.com, will the distribution have all the bug patches and updates integrated? Or will I have to run update again to install the patches separately?

It was not possible due to a changed dynamic loader location (https://wiki.linaro.org/OfficeofCTO/HardFloat/LinkerPathCallApr2012) I succeeded by creating the following symbolic link /lib/ld-linux.so.3 - /lib/ld-linuxarmhf.so.3 Is there a way to install a portability package instead? Is there a reason why this is not done by the distribution? Thanks in advance

    I've been trying to upgrade my installation of Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, but all of the instructions I've found haven't been helping. They mostly say to run the update manager and it'll tell you that there's a new distribution ready. Well, mine doesn't say that. Things I've run or checked: update-manager -d says: Your system is up-to-date The package information was last updated less than one hour ago. I've set it to get all new distributions, not just LTS $ cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades [DEFAULT] # default prompting behavior, valid options: # never - never prompt for a new distribution version # normal - prompt if a new version of the distribution is available # lts - prompt only if a LTS version of the distribution is available Prompt=normal I'm definitely running 9.04 $ lsb_release -r Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 Codename: jaunty Even running the release upgrade from console doesn't help: $ sudo do-release-upgrade Checking for a new ubuntu release No new release found This is running from behind a proxy, but I've set it up such that the regular upgrades and apt-get etc doesn't complain. (export http_proxy=http://myuser:mypass@myserver:8080/) Could you think of anything else which might be stopping me from upgrading?

  • SCCM 2012 unable to update boot images with pxe enabled

    we are fighting an error in sccm 2012. When we attempt to distribute boot images (after selecting the pxe option) we receive an error that the pxe image cannot be expanded (distmgr log). Can you give us any direction on what to try or attempt in this scenario? We only have one dp in our environment at the moment, however we have found that by creating another dp on a different server we don’t have this problem. However we really need the primary site to be a dp. We have tried: Removing and reinstalling the dp Removing and reinstalling the WDS Reinstalled the OS ... ouch Reinstalled SQL We even attempted to manually mount these wims in the remote install folder, no luck...   • Any way to fix alphabetical selection behavior in list widgets in Windows?

    In every version of Windows I've ever used (95 through Vista), the following apparent bug has been present in every list widget, whether drop-down, multi-select, or Explorer folder view: If you use the keyboard to select some item alphabetically, the selection gets "locked" on that item. If I have a list with the contents below, and I press D, then Delta will get selected. At this point, pressing A, B, or G will do nothing unless I first switch focus to another window or control, or remove focus by pressing Esc. If, at the beginning, I press G, then I can keep pressing G to cycle through the Gamma entries, but A, B, or D will do nothing unless I clear the focus. Alpha Beta Beta2 Delta Gamma Gamma2 Gamma3 I don't think I've seen this aggravating behavior on OS X, KDE, or Gnome shells, and I can't imagine why this behavior would be "by design." Does anyone know anything about this bug or how to get around it?

  • Why S3 website redirect location is not followed by CloudFront?

    I have a website hosted on Amazon S3. It is the new version of an old website hosted on WordPress. I have set up some files with the metadata Website Redirect Locationto handle old location and redirect them to the new website pages. For example: I had http://www.mysite.com/solution that I want to redirect to http://mysite.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/product.html So I created an empty file named solutioninside my bucket with the correct metadata: Website Redirect Location= /product.html The S3 redirect metadata is equivalent to a 301 Moved Permanentlythat is great for SEO. This works great when accessing the URL directly from S3 domain. I have also set up a CloudFront distribution based on the website bucket. And when I try to access through my distribution, the redirect does not work, ie: http://xxxx123.cloudfront.net/solution does not redirect but download the empty file instead. So my question is how to keep the redirection through the CloudFront distribution ? Or any idea on how to handle the redirection without deteriorate SEO ? Thanks

    I recently set up a new SCCM 2012 environment at my workplace and now we are creating our applications for distribution. Some applications are set up using a script. When during testing, something was not right and the content of the application needs to be changed. The distribution point keeps on serving the old content to the clients. I was wondering what the proper procedure is for updating the DP's when the content of an application changes. I have tried redistributing to the distribution points and deleting old revisions but to no avail.

But the result is, only one file is installed (attached) to the artifact. The maven protocol is: distrib-0.1-SNAPSHOT.zip distrib-0.1-SNAPSHOT.zip The plugin is using the artifact-id instead of property finalName! Is this a bug?     I have been trying to use Ant to compile and ready a project for distribution. I have encountered several problems along the way that I have been finally able to solve but the solution leaves me very unsatisfied. First, let me explain the set-up of the project and its dependencies. I have a project, lets call it Primary which depends on a couple of libraries such as the fantastic Guava. It also depends on another project of mine, lets call it Secondary. The Secondary project also features some dependencies, for example, JDOM2. I have referenced the Jar I build with Ant in Primary. Furthermore, I believe that including these libraries as class files is bad practice as it could give rise to licensing issues while not packaging them and merely including them in a directory along the build Jar would most probably not (And if it would you could choose not to distribute them yourself). I think my inability to correctly assemble the class path, I always received NoClassDefFoundError for classes or libraries in the Primary project when launching Second's Jar, is that I am not very experienced with Ant. Would I require to specify a class path for both projects? Specifying the class path as . should have allowed me to simply add all dependencies to the same folder as Secondary's Jar, should it not?

  • Ubuntu Desktop shifted to right

    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) Kernel : 3.5.0-18-generic I am encountering a strange problem, my whole desktop has shifted to right. This happened after I restored my system, I was getting a blank screen earlier.(something is better than nothing). For some reason it also shows my display as laptop. Running xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 Running lspci lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09) My Display on window supports maximum of 1366*768. I do not want to reinstall everything please help. It is cycled around as mentioned by Eliah Kagan For correcting my blank screen issue I edited my grub file I edited this line and added nomodeset, without it screen gets all grained up.   • Camunda BPM 7.0 on WebLogic 12c

    If we go on tour together with Oracle I think we have to have camunda BPM running on the Oracle WebLogic application server 12c (WLS in short). And one of our enterprise customers asked - so I invested a Sunday and got it running (okay - to be honest - I needed quite some help from our Java EE server guru Christian). In this blog post I give a step by step description how run camunda BPM on WLS. Please note that this is not an official distribution (which would include a sophisticated QA, a comprehensive documentation and a proper distribution) - it was my personal hobby. And I did not fire the whole test suite agains WLS - so there might be some issues. We will do the real productization as soon as we have a customer for it (let us know if this is interesting for you). Necessary steps After installing and starting up WLS (I used the zip distribution of WLS 12c by the way) you have to do: Add a datasource Add shared libraries Add a resource adapter (for the Job Executor using a proper WorkManager from WLS) Add an EAR starting up one process engine Add a WAR file containing the REST API Add other WAR files (e.g. cockpit) and your own process applications Actually that sounds more work to do than it is ;-) So let's get started: Add a datasource Add a datasource via the Administration Console (or any other convenient way on WLS - I should admit that personally I am not the WLS expert).
