  • How do I repair the corrupted files found by sfc /scannow? "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow?     When viewing a jpg or mp3 in Windows Explorer, the bottom pane shows metadata from the media file. Furthermore, for video and picture, the icon is shown as a preview of the media. Is there a way to add this kind of functionality to windows for custom file types that aren't supported by default in windows? Is there a certain sort of plugin or extension that must be written?   • Python line file iteration and strange characters

    I have a huge gzipped text file which I need to read, line by line. I go with the following: for i, line in enumerate(codecs.getreader('utf-8')(gzip.open('file.gz'))): print i, line At some point late in the file, the python output diverges from the file. This is because lines are getting broken due to weird special characters that python thinks are newlines. When I open the file in 'vim', they are correct, but the suspect characters are formatted weirdly. Is there something I can do to fix this? I've tried other codecs including utf-16, latin-1. I've also tried with no codec. I looked at the file using 'od'. Sure enough, there are \n characters where they shouldn't be. But, the "wrong" ones are prepended by a weird character. I think there's some encoding here with some characters being 2-bytes, but the trailing byte being a \n if not viewed properly. If I replace: gzip.open('file.gz') With: os.popen('zcat file.gz') It works fine (and actually, quite faster). But, I'd like to know where I'm going wrong.

How can i achieve this? I have used fgets(line,sizeof(line),file); but it starts reading from the beginning. I don't have the exact line number to start and stop reading since the file is written by another C code. But there are these identifiers startread and stopread to identify whereto start reading. It'll be very rudimentary: only an XML file containing some parameters (such as frame duration) and metadata, and some images, each representing a frame. I'd like to have the whole animation (frames and XML document) packed in a single file. How do you suggest I do that? What libraries are there that would allow easy access to the files inside the animation file itself? The language I'm using is C++ and the platform is Windows, but I'd rather not use a platform dependent library, if possible.

    I want to make a thick-client, desktop, open source twitter client. I happen to be using .NET as my language and Twitterizer as my OAuth/Twitter wrapper, and my app will likely be released as open source. To get an OAuth token, four pieces of information are required: Access Token (twitter user name) Access Secret (twitter password) Consumer Key Consumer Secret The second two pieces of information are not to be shared, like a PGP private key. However, due to the way the OAuth authorization flow is designed, these need to be on the native app. Even if the application was not open source, and the consumer key/secret were encrypted, a reasonably skilled user could gain access to the consumer key/secret pair. So my question is, how do I get around this problem? What is the proper strategy for a desktop Twitter client to protect its consumer key and secret?

    I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project.     I want to make my project open source but some of its more advanced features are targeted to companies so I would like to require a donation before I send the source code to the donating company. It will be something like that: "If you want to use the extended features of XXXXXXX, please make a donation of $499 and you will receive the source code and the jar with the extended features. You will also receive personalized support by email." Is it legal and acceptable to do something like that? Can the companies donate an amount like that to an open source project? I mean, is it easy for them in terms of their accounting, tax, etc. to donate $499 dollars to an open source project. I know it is not a matter whether they will have money or not but more of a paying procedure matter.

Those projects requires the issues to be reported via email, and the issues may be forwarded to people in mailing list. Users may repeatedly report the same issue if there is no public issue tracker, as they have no easy way to know what have been reported before. The project team members need to spend extra time answering those repeated issues. Some projects do have a public issue tracker, but the issues are still reported through email and they are posted only by the project team only after filtering. It does not allow anyone to report directly in issue tracker. (example: SVN) Such arrangement is not transparent nor open, which I think it violates the philosophy of open source. And it is outdated.

    Okay, the question title may be a bit cryptic. But it aptly describes what I'm looking for: I think every experienced coder went through this numerous times: You get a binary file format specification, you implement the reader for it, and… nothing works like expected. So you run your code in the debugger, go execute through the code line by line, every header field is read in seemingly correct, but when it comes to the bulk data, offset and indices no longer match up. What would really help in this situation was a binary file viewer, that shows you the progress of your file pointer, as you step through the code, and ideally would also highlight all memory maps. Then you could see the context of the current I/O operations, most notably those darn "off-by-one" mistakes, which are even more annoying when reading a file. Implementing such a debugger should not be too hard. traces on the process' file descriptors/handles and triggers on the I/O functions, to update the display. Only: I don't know of such a kind of debugger to exist. Do I just lack knowledge about the existance of such a tool, or is there really no such thing?

  • Why do some open-source projects NOT have a public issue tracker?

    Why do some open source projects not allow to report issues in a public issue tracker? Those projects require the issues to be reported via email, and the issues may be forwarded to people in a mailing list. Users may repeatedly report the same issue if there is no public issue tracker, as they have no easy way to know what has been reported before. The project team members need to spend extra time answering those repeated issues. Some projects do have a public issue tracker but the issues are still reported through email and they are posted by the project team only after filtering. It does not allow anyone to report directly in issue tracker (example: SVN). Such arrangement is not transparent nor open, which I think violates the philosophy of open source. And it is outdated.

  • How to go about "taking over" an open-source project?

    There's an open-source project that I'm interested in and use regularly. It's licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and it has basically no activity any more. It's hosted on Google Code and I'm interested in continuing it's development. I'm new to the open-source process and I'm trying to figure out the appropriate way to go about this. Can I just check it out and push it to github so I can continue it's development in the open there? Should I contact the project "owner" first? Also, do I leave all the author information at the top of the classes, etc even though I'm going to be making changes..(I'm assuming the answer is yes)? Also, how do I practically adhere to the license requirement of "all modifications are clearly marked as being the work of the modifier"? Do I place a comment by every change I make?

  • Large uploaded file won't display in Ubuntu One but is included in file usage

    On Ubuntu 10.04, I uploaded a single 711 MB. My total file usage in Ubuntu One went up to 877MB, which is about right, but the file doesn't show in Ubuntu One so I can't download or delete it. Either the file is there and I can't see it for some reason. Or the file is not there and the total file usage figure is wrong. Does anyone know what has happened? I have a free account but am well below my 5GB limit.

  • Open a popup window on top of a popup window in ASP.NET

    I have a scenario where I have a popup window open and that will have links to open up another window that's going to pop open on top of the already open popup window. I've tried all sort of tricks (javascript window.open, target="_blank" etc.) but nothing seem to work. It always was opening the page on the already opened popup window. Any suggestions? Appreciated your help.

    Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source dependencies (and also tools). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. I'm also interested in any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!
