  • Windows Server 2008 R2 bare metal restore to different hardware

    Scenario: I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 installation whose main disk drive is now 7 years old and showing signs of age. For the last couple of months it's been displaying increased errors and requirements to run checkdisk. I have successfully created a bare metal restore (BMR) image on a separate data drive on the server, which can be seen from the Windows Recovery console; I tested it by booting to and using the Windows Server installation DVD's recovery utilities. The BMR image includes the system drive with boot partition, system state, and the D:\ drive of the server, which is where I have followed the practice of installing any program that does not require a C:\ installation path. Therefore, the BMR includes both the C:\ and D:\ drives, system state and boot partition. The C:\ drive is a 7-year old Seagate 160GB. The D:\ drive is a rather newer 120GB Western Digital. I have purchased a 128GB solid state Samsung 830 that I want to restore these partitions to, using the BMR. Questions: In the above-referenced article, Microsoft seems to be indicating that I am only able to restore to like-kind hardware, which doesn't help at all and is difficult to believe. Is this really true? I've cleaned these drives up and minimized the size of partition they require. C:\ will need about a 70GB partition, and the data on D:\ will need about 50GB. Will Windows Server backup allow me to restore the BMR to newly-created partitions on the SSD, discarding extra space? I don't need a "how-to": I just need an "is it possible".     I got a web site design in PSD file from a web-designer. All element s there snap to guides, which is handy when I make a selection to copy an element of design to a PNG file: guides make my selection precise. One button there has two states: normal and hover. Both states contains of several layers. So I am trying to copy both states as PNG files in order to make a nice button in html. The problem is that both states have shadow effects, which go beyond the layers' edges, i.e. when I try to select a button my selection (snapped to guides) does not include an outer part of the shadow. How do I make a precise selection of the button state in such situation?

  • When radio button selection changes do not cause refresh?

I have it hiding and showing fine but each time it causes the page to refresh to the top. Is their a way to stop that refresh?   • Rangy move boundaries of user selection out of header element

    I'm using rangy and have a case with a contenteditable div where the users selection can be saved and later restored so that HTML can be inserted. My problem is that if the user selects within a header element, I don't want the html inserted within a header. So I'm trying to figure out how to use rangy so that if the the selection is made within a header then I can move it before the header element. So if the user selects within an h1: <div id="editable" contenteditable> <h1>|user selects here| Header Text</h1> </div> Then the saved selection would be moved before the h1: | selection boundary moved here |<div id="editable" contenteditable> <h1>|user selects here| Header Text</h1> </div> I've tried the following to see if I could move the selection boundary: var sel = rangy.getSelection(); var range = sel.getRangeAt(0); range.setStartBefore(sel.anchorNode.parentNode); sel.removeAllRanges(); sel.addRange(range); selected = rangy.saveSelection(); But when I select within the H1, it still sets the saved selection boundaries within the H1 and not before it. I'm not sure how I can get the boundaries moved before the header element.

    I'm an iPhone programmer who is no longer in possession of a personal Mac computer on which to use XCode. I have two Windows desktops, and I would like to run OS X in VMWare rather than purchase Apple's expensive hardware. However, neither of my machines supports hardware-assisted virtualization, which is required to virtualize OS X. I went shopping online for a computer today, since I've been planning to purchase a laptop anyway, but sites like Best Buy don't appear to give any indication of whether or not a product supports this. Is there any other site out there or some trick to figuring this out other than buying the machine and running Microsoft's nifty little detection tool?

  • High end mobile workstations with pointer stick

    I am looking for a list of higher end mobile workstations that run Ubuntu/Kubuntu well and also have a hardware pointer stick. Here's an illustration of one (from sciencesurvivalblog): I wouldn't mind getting a Macbook Pro and wiping it but they refuse to use pointer sticks and to me, they are extremely efficient. I see a lot of potential for Lenovo thinkpads as well. System 76 said they have no plans to implement a hardware pointer stick so that leaves them out as well. Any ideas?

    I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04. When I try to enable desktop effects it says "Desktop effects could not be enabled". The output of "lspci | grep VGA" is : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03) Hardware drivers says there is no propriority hardware driver. I installed nVidia driver but I think my is an Intel graphics device. Please help.

    When I have multiple selections in a Word 2007 document, such as after selecting all instances of a style, how can I move from one selection to the next? When you issue the select all instances command, the view snaps to the next instance of the style, but how can I find the other instances? Any cursor key will unselect everything. Using the mouse to scroll through the document is not feasible for large documents, plus the selection could be a single character -- very easy to miss!

Is there a UNIX tool that takes a selection parameter (id attribute or XPath), reads HTML from stdin and prints to stdout the subtree based on the selection? For example, given an html document I want to filter out everything but the subtree of the element with id="content". Basically, I'm looking for the simplest HTML/XML equivalent to grep.

  • Solutions for cheaply replacing poorly-supported onboard ATI card with discreet graphics on desktop machine?

    I have put Ubuntu on my mum's desktop computer. Unfortunately, the open source radeon driver does not work well with the onboard ATI graphics, and ATI's proprietary driver no longer supports the hardware at all. In order to use the ATI proprietary driver with this hardware, it is necessary to use an older version of Xorg, which is now only available in versions of Ubuntu older than 8.10. Unfortunately, the open source radeon driver seems to be causing X to lock up intermittently when my mum uses Audacity. I'm willing to accept that some hardware is not well-supported on Ubuntu, and so, because this is a desktop computer with a couple of free PCI slots, I think a better solution might simply be to plug in a new graphics card that might have better driver support, and to disable the onboard ATI card in the BIOS. The requirements for this card are that it be inexpensive and have robust (preferably open source) driver support in Ubuntu 10.04. Heavy-duty graphics processing power is not a requirement. A second-hand card on Ebay would also be fine. Can anyone make some recommendations?

So, if a web site (the "entrance" page) offers a choice (a list) of countries, with the text "Chose your country", but the users country is not listed, what should he do? One example is http://www.samsung.com/countryselection.do Addition: I ask this standing in the users position. I encounter a web site and it gives me the above page. What to do? Another issue: What is "my" country? My current location? My permanent residence? The country of my citizenship? Something else?

  • Which Xorg driver (not kernel driver) to use with GMA500/Poulsbo video hardware in 12.04

    I have a Asus EeePC with a GMA500 video card. I followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo/, which made the netbook boot correctly. Without any xorg.conf file, Xorg uses the VESA driver, which is quite slow. Manually specifying fbdev as driver in xorg.conf also works. Which one should I use? Are there any other drivers for Xorg that do better at 2d accelleration (since the kernel driver doesn't support 3d acceleration)?

Platform Independent Database Independent Browser Independent In functional requirements the product is very dynamic in nature. The main reason being the procurement process around the world is different from client to client. Briefly we need to have a dynamic workflow engine and a dynamic template engine. The workflow engine by which we can define any kind of workflows and the template engine allows us to define any kind of data structures and based on definition it can get the user input through workflow. We have been developing this product for almost 2 years. It has been a long time till we can get down with the dynamics of requirements. Till now we have developed a basic workflow and template engine and which is in use at one of the client. We have been using following technologies. GWT-Ext (Front End Framework) Hibernate (Database Layer) In between we have faced some issues with GWT-Ext (mainly browser compatibility) and database optimization due to sub classing in hibernate. For resolving GWT-Ext issue, which a dying community so we decided to move to SmartGWT. In SmartGWT we faced issues related to loading and now we are able to finalize that GWT 2.3 will be the way to go as the library is rich and performance is upto the mark. We are able to almost finalize GWT-Spring based front and middle layer. In hibernate, we found main issues with sub-classing due to that it was throwing astronomical queries and sometimes it would stop firing any queries for 5-10 seconds or may be around 30 seconds and then resume again. Few days back I came to one article related to ORM. I am a traditional .Net SQL developer and I have always worked with relational database. Reading through this article, I also found it relating to the issues I face. I am still not completely convinced of using hibernate and this article just supported my opinion. Following are the questions for which I am looking for an answer. Should we be going with Hibernate in case of dynamic database requirements and the load of the data will be heavy in future? How can we partition the data, how we can efficiently join the data, how we can optimize the queries? If the answer is no then how do we achieve database independence? Is our choice related to GWT and Spring proper or do we need to change that too? Should we use any other key value pair database if the data is dynamic in nature and it is very difficult to make it relational?

  • Installing Ubuntu on a computer with USB 3.0 hardware

    I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit version on an HP Envy 15. I get the same problem these people have here: "unable to find a medium containing a live file system" error when installing but the question was never resolved. I spent so long researching and got so frustrated that I took my computer down to a shop and asked them to install it for me. It took them a while but they managed to get it installed. The reason for this error they had said was because Ubuntu didn't have the USB 3.0 drivers it needed to install properly. I'm reinstalling Ubuntu yet again and I've run into the same issue so my question is: does anyone know.. a) Where to get these USB 3.0 drivers? b) How to get them installed when installing the Ubuntu OS?   • Black screen after grub kernal selection menu

    I have an Acer eMachines e727 with Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics (drivers updated to latest). I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi. All is well until I select the kernal (first one on the list). My display goes black. I searched for solutions and found one on Unbuntu forum which partially helped. Following that sticky post, I pressed "e" at the kernal listings. I changed the $Linux... default line to "quiet splash nomodeset" and was able to get to the login screen and desktop. I edited grub to make the nomodeset permanent (also removed the vt command as recommended). I followed through with changing grub to match the graphics as recommended in the article using the grub cli (using info from vbeinfo). I updated grub with the recommended settings but still get the black screen after selecting the kernal. Only nomodeset works to get me to the login and desktop. Once I get to the desktop, my display resolution shows being set to 1024x768 but it actually looks like 800x680. What do I need to do to get past these issues? Thanks!

    Hi, I'm using ubuntu 10.10 and when I login it shows my login's wallpaper an appears the window where I select my user without showing it and then gets frozen. No mouse response, no keyboard responde (even if I try to num/caps lock). I tried with safe mode and same thing happens, but in that case it freeze when trying to load some USB stuff, I tought it was my USB headset or my mouse so I disconnected them but doesn't works. Any advice on how to fix this, how to login to try an update or how to post more information?

    Similar to this post No ibus icon in Kubuntu, I have trouble with the ibus icon in Ubuntu 12.04. Each time an update is installed, the language selector for Japanese disappears from the top panel. I need to uninstall and install Japanese again, then reboot, to make the symbol appear again. In this thread No iBus icon in Kubuntu 12.04 the suggestion was to install the Japanese Version of Ubuntu, but is it really true that one has to stick to a special version of Ubuntu to get this problem solved? If so, how can I transfer the settings easily from the current version to the Japanese one?
