  • Installing Ubuntu by writing on the Hard Drive

    I have a laptop whose CD drive is not operational and is too old to boot from a flash stick. I have bought a new hard drive for it for which I have an enclosure. Is there a way to configure the disk as an external to my current ubuntu setup, copy some form of ubuntu on the hard drive, place the HD in the old laptop, and have ubuntu install ubuntu from there? Effectively what I am asking about is some sort of live cd that installs on itself (since the HD is writeable).

  • Tried every possible method but couldn't enable compiz?

    a newbie, installed ubuntu 10.10 about a month ago,over the month i fixed everything from dad playback,to webcam,but couldn't enable compiz anayway,my card is blacklisted, i tried the SKIP_CHECKS=yes,method and even tried ghex editing,but of no avail,now all i get when i run compiz in the terminal is "segmentation fault",the specs of my laptop is intel core i3 2330,and intel hd graphics 3000,has anyone has been able to run compiz on intel hd graphics 3000?

    I am using Ubuntu on hp pavillion g6 laptop but my video card intel HD graphics family is set always to standard and not performs best. When I minimize any application windows in my Ubuntu 12.04 the outline of the window remains on the screen and even it does not give me option to resize the doc at the left hand side. Please help me out I have installed mesa-utils and updated the system Even did the grub settings with nomodeset but do not know the grub settings Intel HD graphics Family (Sandybridge).

  • New Computer Build Questions

    I'm in the process of gathering parts and specs for a new machine. I wear many hats, so the machine needs to do a lot. I need at least 2 monitor support, if not three. I also play many online MMOs (wow, aion, war hammer, etc), along with some freelance programming projects. I already have a case which is very large, so it will fit anything. I have 2 other SATA HDs. They are more for storage and basic programs. I feel that the best improvement could be done with a solid state HD, true or not? I'm more of a software/programming guy, so ANY input at all on improving this system build would be appreciated. I have a few questions with this list. AMD or Intel? I don't know enough about either to choose what would best fit me. Thanks! **EDIT: Thanks for the input everyone! Here are some answers: I do a lot of programming and gaming, so I do need things for both. The newer video card covers the gaming aspect, as well as allowing me to have many monitors. (hopefully upgrade to dual 30' or more) I don't need any additional HDs at this time. I have a SATA 160g and 120g from my previous computer, and a NAS system with over 2TB of storage on the homenetwork. I just wanted a fast HD for OS/programs/games. With the memory. I have used G.SKILL before in 2 system builds. It's done excellent for me in them. Very stable. **EDIT2: Made some additional changes. Lowered the power supply down to 750, which saves me more $$.   • Kickstart based installation of RHEL 6.4 from USB

    I want to setup some brand new servers with RHEL 6.4. Servers do not have DVD, so, I have to use USB for the installation. I already have a custom ISO with a kickstart file that I use on servers with DVD flawlessly. I used iso2usb to move the ISO t? my USB. When I boot from the USB, the ks file is found, anaconda starts, but then stops with the following error: "The installation source given by device ['sda1'] could not be found. Please check your parameters and try again" Notes: The USB IS the sda. My custom ISO file is renamed to linux.iso from iso2usb and it is present in the root directory of the USB.   • Gray Progress Bar in Macbook Boot caused by Partition Fault

    Here's my problem: When I try to load my macbook it shows the gray progress bar. It takes a while to fill the whole progress and after it macbook just shuts down. I tried to boot from recovery partition and run Disk Utility to repair it. Disk Utility showed my "Macintosh HD" in a gray color and failed to repair it. I thought all my data was lost, but then I tried the following: So I booted into ubunto from live usb and it successfully mounted my macintosh hd hfs+ partition. Parted shows me the following partitions on my disk: Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 20.5kB 210MB 210MB fat32 EFI System Partition boot 2 210MB 499GB 499GB hfs+ Macintosh HD 3 499GB 500GB 650MB hfs+ Recovery HD Seems legit except for FAT32 for EFI System Partition. Since all my data is okay and backed up what should I do to recover the system. I don't really want to reinstall all the system though I believe there's a command to make it allright in linux.   • Dealing with AVCHD. Any free software to extract or edit AVCHD video?

    I have a Panasonic HDC-SD5 video carmera which records in HD format to a memory card. It also came with a DVD burner which burns this format to DVD which I need a blu-ray player to view. I can get about 30 min worth of video on 1 DVD. My problem is the software that comes with the camera is not very good at all so I am constantly just using the 'backup' feature in the included burner (connect drive to camera, push backup, and it spits out up to 4 DVDs worth of HD video). Now that I have the video backed up on DVD in the HD format (blu-ray), is there any free software that I can use to edit this video and create other HD DVD's with my own menus, transitions, etc? I was considering buying Pinnacle Studio but I wanted to exaust any free options before biting the bullet. Any suggestions for software I could use or anything else I could do to make dealing with this AVCHD format any easier that I am unaware of? Edit: Sorry forgot to include that I am running Windows Vista 64-bit. Edit: Still haven't found anything that is truely free. Everything has limitations by either time, watermark the video or degrade the quality. Edit: So I still haven't found really anything, so is there some software I can use to convert the video to another format that I then could use to edit the video?

  • Can I still restore partition table?

    Once I was going to resize partitions on my Mac HD from Bootcamp. I changed my mind and was going to quit, but apparently I hit a button, which made every single mac partion dissapear, and windows 7 refused to restart and be reinstalled. The 1 TB large HD consists of 3 partions, I believe. Since I can't see their actual size (except bootcamp), this is how I recall it. Macintosh HD about 500GB (Somewhere around 700GB according to disk utillity, but 500 according to Finder, and 500GB was all I could access.) Lion Recovery disk Bootcamp 293.36 GB To fix this I connected my mac via target disk mode to a pc and ran TestDisk. However this is the results: Since I Don't have 10 reputation I cant post the image showing the testdisk results, so I post a link instead hoping it is ok. The two mac partitions' sizes are completely wrong, and BOOTCAMP isn't showing. I tested using disk utilities from the snow leopard dvd. There there is one 293.36 GB Mac OS Extended partition. Before I had the firewire cable for target disk mode I tried reinstalling windows. Without success I tried again formating BOOTCAMP. Was that a bad thing to do? Could it have overwritten data from Macintosh HD? Unfortunately I have no backup. I could bring it to some kind of computer repair firm though.

    After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues. And also he said the dual core 8400 runs at 3 ghz compared to the 2 ghz so it heats very much because of the two extra cores so it takes more current raising electricty bills and is not good for gaming and watching HD movies and internet flash animations and games because of getting heated everytime. And he wants to choose and take the E8400 because he has air conditioning at home so it will be safe from heating. So which one computer should i take is it really faster because of the HT High definition technology and will i be able to play internet flash card games better and watch good HD movies Youtube etc and play all the music and songs.

  • Mac Finder: WD My Passport won't mount

    I really need your help. I have a WD My Passport 650GB (with Firewire and USB). I'm using it for almost a year now and it always worked fine. While underway I simply plug it in via Firewire - at home I connect it to my Airport Extreme to have it available as a network storage. Today I connected the hd to my macbookpro (via firewire) and NOTHING. The hd is starting (clearly making a sound and the power-indicator is flashing) but it won't appear in Finder. I also tried it with USB - no sign. I ran Disk Utility and tried to repair the disk. At first try I got a red error line saying that something is wrong with the "headers". However the repair completed with a success message saying that everything is ok. I also verified the hd. Also with a success message. I did that a few times again and unplugged it in between. Never got the error with the headers again - it's always completing and saying everything is ok. However I can't mount the drive. That is what Disk Utility is showing. Any ideas on that? I really need the files on that hd. thank you in advance!

    hi i have added openid login with Yahoo! and Google in my site. it is ok and works fine. when users select for example Yahoo! to login to my site, they will be logged in in their yahoo mail account too. i think it is not secure because maybe they don't notice to this issue and leave computer while their email account is availble. what do you think about this and what is your solution for your own sites? as i notice the same story is for stackoverflow.com.

    hi, i have webpage in which a webpart contains a Chart control. the problem is chart control is rendered perfectly when i login as central admin. but when i login as another user with contribute permisson following problems occur. when i change webconfig as --- add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=file;timeout=20;dir=c:\TempImageFiles\;"--- page is not at all loaded. i get error like YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO VIEW THIS PAGE. when i change the wbconfig as --- add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=memory;timeout=20;URL=/_layouts/Images/MicrosoftChartControls/" --- the page loads fine but image is not rendered. A red mark appears in place of image. I tried all optins got by googling.. any more suggestions/help will be welcomed
