• How do I get started on a bigger project?

  Hey guys, Most of the time I have been programming little apps either for myself or for the benifit of learning. Now that my programming skills are considered somewhat intermediate, I was wondering how I would tackle a large programming project. Lets suppose I wanted to make an application that has a lot of features and is intended for the use of others and not just myself; how do I go about planning for such projects? Do I just jump in and start coding the thing or is there some sort of recommended process? Thanks in advance :D

• What are the possible causes of JasperException

  I have a JSP that takes an Arraylist from the session object and removes the items from it. It seemed to be working fine and then out of nowhere when I navigate to that page, the page is blank. I checked the Tomcat log files and in catalina.out I am receiving a JasperException an it is showing it as being on a line with the following for(int i; i < agentItems.size(); i++) agentItems is the name of the ArrayList I am using. I have been debugging it and can't seem to figure out what the problem might be. I have read that a JasperException is sometiems thrown as a JSP's NullPointerException. Is this true or am I just completely overlooking the problem? I have the web application running on a local machine and a intermediate server for development in which both of them have had no trouble. Why could it be that only on this server it is giving me problems?

• When to choose C over C++?

  Hi. I have become a fond of C++ thanks to this website. Before, I programmed exclusively in C/Fortran, thinking that C++ was too slow (not anymore). Is there a reason to write new project purely in C? this is besides obvious things like low-level kernel/system components. What about intermediate things, like communication libraries, for example MPI? Is C still more portable than C++? I have messed with pretty exotic systems, like Cray, but have yet to see non-embedded system without C++. thanks

  I have been taken in to provide some seo guidance on a website which has been running since 2005. My problem is i want to use clean urls. The code that handles the url is hidden away in some class file.. and with over a few thousand lines of code its a struggle to rewrite it. So I'm think, I have gone through all the products and created a slug for them as a field in the product table. Is it possible to do something like an intermediate file for htaccess. Some thing like 1./clean-slug-comes-in/ 2.htaccess catches this and uses slug.php to find the relevant product id for the slug. 3.Then product.php?id=(ID.found.from.2) is loaded?

  in a controller you can use this method to load a view. but i want to know behind the scenes here. im new to php and frameworks, but i’ve learned the basics of OOP. when $this-view() is made then the method in the current class or the parent class is used. but what does this mean: $this-load-view(). what is the intermediate load? is it a function or is it a property? where is it located? how could it contain view()? grateful for explanation.

  I have a web application , that helps download reports. But the report generation sometimes takes a lot of time, and the web request times out through the intermediate proxy server.(Timeout :90 secs). The workflow for downloading the report is straightforward. Client sends request to the web server. The web server generates the report , and makes it available to the client as an excel download. The excel is generated using POI and the download is provided using Spring's AbstractExcelView. What could be the best way to keep the web request alive(without increasing the timeout , of course) ?

• How to write own DLL in Visual Studio, C language (not C++)

  Dear all, I'm trying to create my own DLL... I used wizzard in VS2008 to create template for DLL. This works fine and the dll builds successfully (Test.dll is created). BUT, when I rename the file from Test.cpp to Test.c (which I guess causes compilation in C-mode), solution rebuilds also successfully, but no .dll is created. The list of all created files follows: mt.dep BuildLog.htm vc90.idb Test.dll.embed.manifest Test.dll.intermediate.manifest Test.obj MySecondCFile.obj vc90.pdb Test.dll.embed.manifest.res For my purposes it's essential that the dll be in C not C++, while I already have a lot of code written in C, which does not compile as C++. Do you know, why .dll is not created? What should I do?

• Is it good to commit files often if using Mercurial or Git?

  It seems that it is suggested we can commit often to keep track of intermediate changes of code we wrote… such as on hginit.com, when using Mercurial or Git. However, let's say if we work on a project, and we commit files often. Now for one reason or another, the manager wants part of the feature to go out, so we need to do a push, but I heard that on Mercurial or Git, there is no way to push individual files or a folder… either everything committed gets pushed or nothing get pushed. So we either have to revert all those files we don't want to push, or we just never should commit until before we push -- right after commit, we push?

• Which programming language is easiest to get a junior position in?

  I do not have a CS degree but I have lots of intermediate experience with many languages (PHP, C#, Objective-C, Java, VBScript, Actionscript, Javascript, Ruby, etc), mostly freelance or pastime. I have a little experience with Linux (Ubuntu), and a decent bit with Windows. When I look at different languages I find that am interested in most (except maybe VB), but I am not sure what to focus on. So what would be the easiest language to get a job in? Java? PHP? Or would it be easier to get a job as a Junior DBA if I learned Oracle or SQL Server in my spare time?

  Hi, My GUI project in Qt has a lot of "configuration pages" classes which all inherit directly from QWidget. Recently, I realized that all these classes share 2 commons slots (loadSettings() and saveSettings()). Regarding this, I have two questions: Does it make sense to write a intermediate base abstract class (lets name it BaseConfigurationPage) with these two slots as virtual pure methods ? (Every possible configuration page will always have these two methods, so I would say "yes") Before I do the heavy change in my code (if I have to) : does Qt support virtual pure slots ? Is there anything I should be aware of ? • Can I tell Borland C++ Builder to copy a file somewhere else after it is built?

  I have two computers. One is intended to be left 'free' for high-performance activities (such as playing games) The other is my 'all purpose' computer where I install all the apps I use for creating things, and so on. On the second computer I use Codegear C++ Builder to work on an app that I use on the first computer. If I have BCB compile to comp 1 it is hopeless. It becomes unresponsive. It compiles locally very quickly. So what I do is compile locally and then copy the exe to the other machine. Well, I'm all for streamlining processes, so I want a way to compile on PC2 and use on PC1 without any intermediate steps. So is it possible to have BCB do the compiling on PC2 and create a local exe file, then copy the file to PC 1?

  Hello all, I'm looking to purchase a jquery book. I'm a strong C# developer whose had experience with dojo. Now, I'm building my own site and am looking to learn a new platform in the process. So, I've chosen jquery. With dojo, I know how to make my own widgets. I want to learn about ways to plug into jquery to make reusable controls. Also, I plan to make heavy use of json with ajax. Other things to consider: I would call my javascript expertise as intermediate. I'd like to find a book that is as up to date with the jquery platform as possible as I know that in a few months it will likely be out of date. What book or books would you reccomend?

  Hi! all I am designing an application for streaming video.I have developed a model in which a server wait for incoming request.The server it self is serving to a good number of clients and it can't afford to serve any more clients.Now when the new connection comes,the server chooses from among it's clients a candidate client who will serve the request of the incoming client.Now the thing is that this choice should be very intelligent.Now I am using various heuristic like bandwidth of the selected client,it's location,distance from the requesting client to come at a decision.Now my question is,IS THERE AVAILABLE ANY TOOL TO FIND OUT BANDWIDTH,LOCATION of a host,and DISTANCE(my be in hop number)?for hop number I can use traceroute but that will be too expensive as it take long time sending reply from every intermediate router. • Find value within a range in lookup table

  I have the simplest problem to implement, but so far I have not been able to get my head around a solution in Python. I have built a table that looks similar to this one: 501 - ASIA 1262 - EUROPE 3389 - LATAM 5409 - US I will test a certain value to see if it falls within these ranges, 389 -> ASIA, 1300 -> LATAM, 5400 -> US. A value greater than 5409 should not return a lookup value. I normally have a one to one match, and would implement a dictionary for the lookup. But in this case I have to consider these ranges, and I am not seeing my way out of the problem. Maybe without providing the whole solution, could you provide some comments that would help me look in the right direction? It is very similar to a vlookup in a spreadsheet. I would describe my Python knowledge as somewhere in between basic to intermediate. Many thanks in advance.

• Strategy for desugaring Haskell

  I'm developing a virtual machine for purely functional programs, and I would like to be able to test and use the the wide variety of Haskell modules already available. The VM takes as input essentially terms in the untyped lambda calculus. I'm wondering what would be a good way to extract such a representation from modern Haskell modules (eg. with MPTC's, pattern guards, etc.). I did a little research and there doesn't seem to be a tool that does this already (I would be delighted to be mistaken), and that's okay. I'm looking for an approach. GHC Core seems too operationally focused, especially since one of the things the VM does is to change the evaluation order significantly. Are there any accessible intermediate representations that correspond more closely to the lambda calculus?

• Which file is the COM++ object and how do I import it to .NET?

  I'm trying to write a COM++ object wrapper around a Qt widget (control) I wrote so I can use it in future .NET projects. e.g.: public __gc class comWidget; In the compile directory are the .exe, an exe.intermediate.manifest, and the comWidget.obj, and also some other crap files (.pdb, etc). So what/how do I import into .NET? I feel like I'm missing an important step for registering the object or whatever, but all these tutorials are terrible outdated and ridiculously unhelpful (for instance, I'm using the old CLR syntax because I can't find any good docs on the new stuff, thx again M$ for being lazy faggots as usual)

  I'm on a shared webhost where I don't have permission to edit the global bash configuration file at /ect/bashrc. Unfortunately there is one line in the global file, mesg y, which puts the terminal in tty mode and makes scp and similar commands unavailable. My local ~./bashrc includes the global file as a source, like so: # Source global definitions if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then . /etc/bashrc fi My current workaround uses cat and grep to output the global file, sans offending line, into a local file and use that as a source. # Source global definitions if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then cat /etc/bashrc | grep -v mesg > ~/.bash_global . ~/.bash_global fi Is there a way to do include a grokked file like this without the intermediate step of creating an actual file? Yes, jQuery may in effect do the same thing, but it has a better chance of optimizing (at least in theory), when it knows the full query's intent.

  I'm trying to compile one project with MSVC 2010, compilation is ok, but when I try to run the app, it gives me CRT not initialized error. It is a console application, so I tried to specify mainCRTStartup as Entry Point, but it didn't help. In the same solution there are other projects, and they don't have such a problem.
