• Excel string manipulation to check data consistency

  Background information: - There are nearly 7000 individuals and there is data about their performances in one, two or three tests. Every individual has taken the 1st test (let's call it Test M). Some of those who have taken Test M have also taken Test I, and some of those who have taken Test I have also taken Test B. For the first two tests (M and I), students can score grades I, II, or III. Depending on the grades they are awarded points -- 3 for grade I, 2 for II, 1 for III. The last Test B is just a pass or a fail result with no grades. Those passing this test get 1 point, with no points for failure. (Well actually, grades are awarded, but all grades are given a common 1 point). An amateur has entered data to represent these students and their grades in an Excel file. Problem is, this person has done the worst thing possible - he has developed his own notation and entered all test information in a single cell --- and made my life hell. The file originally had two text columns, one for individual's id, and the second for test info, if one could call it that. It's horrible, I know, and I am suffering. In the image, if you see "M-II-2 I-III-1" it means the person got grade II in Test M for 2 points and grade III in Test I for 1 point. Some have taken only one test, some two, and some three. When the file came to me for processing and analyzing the performance of students, I sent it back with instructions to insert 3 additional columns with only the grades for the three tests. The file now looks as follows. Columns C and D represent grades I, II, and III using 1,2 and 3 respectively. Column C is for Test M, column D for Test I. Column E says BA (B Achieved!) if the individual has passed Test B. Now that you have the above information, let's get to the problem. I don't trust this and want to check whether data in column B matches with data in columns C,D and E. That is, I want to examine the string in column B and find out whether the figures in columns C,D and E are correct. All help is really appreciated. P.S. - I had exported this to MySQL via ODBC and that is why you are seeing those NULLs. I tried doing this in MySQL too, and really will accept a MySQL or an Excel solution, I don't have a preference. Edit : - See file with sample data

  I have two tables that link together through an id one is "submit_moderate" and one is "submit_post" The "submit_moderate" table looks like this id moderated_by post 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 4 Michael 60 Im using a simple query to get data from the "submit_post" table according to the "submit_moderate" table. $get_posts = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM submit_moderate WHERE moderated_by!='$user'"); $user is the person who is signed in. Now my problem is when I run this query, with the user 'Michael' it will retrieve this 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 Now technically this is correct however I don't want to retrieve the first row because 60 is associated with Michael as well as James. Basically I don't want to retrieve that value '60'. I know why this is happening however I can't figure out how to do this. I appreciate any hints or advice I can get.

• Best way to return a user-generated file, AJAX or Forms?

  Hi, I'm new to web programming, so I need some help. I am writing a custom file-creation app for my site. A user visits the page, clicks on some various options and toggles some checkboxes, and the presses a 'download now' link. I have a PHP backend which will be processing the submission, and generating a PDF file. After the user presses the download link, I want the download to start like it would for any static link. My question is: What is the best way to do this? From my limited understanding, I have a choice between using AJAX or somehow using forms to submit the data. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Does anyone have any good links to examples? Thanks

• Creating ODT and PDF files as end result

  Hello, I've been working on an app to create various document formats for a while now, and I've had limited success. Ideally, I'd like to dynamically create a fairly simple ODT/PDF/DOC file. I've been focusing my efforts on ODT, because it is editable, and open enough that there are several tools which will convert it to any of the other formats I need. The problem is that the ODT XML files are NOT simple, and there aren't any good-quality API's I could find (especially in python). So far, I've had the most success creating a template ODT file, and then manipulating the DOM in python as needed. This is ok generally, but is quickly becoming inadequate and requires too much tweaking every single time I need to alter one of the templates. The requirements are: 1) Produce a simple document that will have lists, paragraphs, and the ability to draw simple graphics on the page (boxes, circles, etc...) 2) The ability to specify page size, and the different formats should generally print the exact same output when sent to a printer My questions: 1) Are there any other ways I can produce ODT/PDF/DOC files? 2) Would LaTeX be acceptable? I've never really used it, does anyone have experience converting LaTeX files into other formats? 3) Would it be possible to use HTML? There are a lot of converters online. Technically you can specify dimensions in mm/cm, etc..., but I am worried that the printed output will differ between browsers/converters.... Any other ideas?

  Hi, I'm trying to modify Guido's multimethod (dynamic dispatch code): http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=101605 to handle inheritance and possibly out of order arguments. e.g. (inheritance problem) class A(object): pass class B(A): pass @multimethod(A,A) def foo(arg1,arg2): print 'works' foo(A(),A()) #works foo(A(),B()) #fails Is there a better way than iteratively checking for the super() of each item until one is found? e.g. (argument ordering problem) I was thinking of this from a collision detection standpoint. e.g. foo(Car(),Truck()) and foo(Truck(), Car()) and should both trigger foo(Car,Truck) # Note: @multimethod(Truck,Car) will throw an exception if @multimethod(Car,Truck) was registered first? I'm looking specifically for an 'elegant' solution. I know that I could just brute force my way through all the possibilities, but I'm trying to avoid that. I just wanted to get some input/ideas before sitting down and pounding out a solution. Thanks

• Basic Custom String Class for C++

  Hey all, I'm working on building my own string class with very basic functionality. I am having difficulty understand what is going on with the basic class that I have define, and believe there is some sort of error dealing with the scope occurring. When I try to view the objects I created, all the fields are described as (obviously bad pointer). Also, if I make the data fields public or build an accessor method, the program crashes. For some reason the pointer for the object is 0xccccccccc which points to no where. How can a I fix this? • Including/Organzing HTML in large javascript project

  Hi, I've a got a fairly large web app, with several mini applets on each page. These applets are almost always identical jquery apps. I am looking for advice on how I should organize/include smaller parts of these jquery apps within my larger project. For example, each app has several independent tabs. If possible, I would like to store each of the tabs as a seperate .html file because this makes development easier. My requirements are: 1) All of the html 'tabs' are loaded on the clients end when the page loads. I would like to avoid any delays by dynamically requesting the tab html. 2) If possible, I would like to minimize the raw data sent. For example, it would be preferable to send each tab 1 time, instead of sending each tab 10 times if there are ten applets on that page. Questions: 1) What are my options for 'including' the HTML files / javascript code 2) Any tips for keeping my development simple in this situation? Surely there has to be a better way than just editing one massive html file when working with large pages.

  Hi, I'm trying to do something that is fairly simple, but my code looks terrible and I am certain there is a better way to do things in javascript. I am new to javascript, and am trying to improve my coding. This just feels very messy. All I want to do is to randomly change the order some words on a web page. • Jquery javascript - How can I let users 'undo' their modifications?

  Hi, i have a basic jquery app that allows a user to edit and manipulate some lists on a page. What I would like to do is have a button 'restore original list' that the user can press to undo his modifications. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking of just copying the DOM from the list down, and pasting it in a hidden element someplace else on the page. Is this the best way to do this? I also noticed that jquery has a .data() function which I could use if I converted the data to an array and stored it this way. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Also, I'm open to any suggestions people have if there is some method I haven't thought of. Thanks for your help!

• Are table headers only for the top row in html?

  Hi, I always see the th tag only used in the first row of the table. Is there some specific reason why it can't be used to create 'left' headers along the leftmost column. Is this bad form, or is this ok. Basically, a table with headings on the top row and the leftmost column, with the very top left square being empty. e.g. <table> <tr> <th/> <!--empty--> <th>Top 1</th> <th>Top 2</th></tr> <tr> <th>LeftHeader?</th> <td>data1</td> <td>data2</td></tr> </table>

• How do I import facebook friends from another website

  I am looking for a way to connect to facebook by allowing the user to enter in their username and password and have our app connect to their account and get their contacts so that they can invite them to join their group on our site. I have written a facebook app before, but this is not an app as much as it is a connector so that they can invite all their friends or just some to the site we are working on. I have seen several other sites do this and also connect to Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail contacts. I dont think they are using Facebook Connect to do this since it is so new, but they may be. Any solution in any language is fine as I can port whatever example to use C#. I cannot find anything specifically on Google or Facebook to address this specific problem. Any help is appreciated. I saw a first answer get removed that had suggested i might need to scrape the friends page. The more I look around, this might be what i need to do. Any other way i think will require the person to add it as an app. I am wondering how a answer can get removed, maybe that user deleted it.

• Accessing php $_SESSION from python (wsgi) - is it possible?

  Hi, I've got a python/WSGI app which needs to check to see if a user has logged on to a PHP web app. The problem is that the PHP app checks if a user has logged on by comparing a value in the $_SESSION variable to a value in the cookie from the user's browser. I would prefer to avoid changing the behavior of the php app if at all possible. My questions: Is there anyway I can access the session variables from within python? Where should I start to look? Are there any obvious security/performance issues I should be aware of when taking this approach?

• SVNParentPath directory authorization

  The question is a bit stupid but I can't get it sorted. I have a server with SVN that uses the SVNPath directive in httpd.conf and all works fine with path authorizations. Now I'm installing a second serer where I'm going to use SVNParentPath directive and I've got it all running except I can't get the authorization part quite right. From what I understand it's the same as when you use SVNPath but you need to specificy the repo name before the folder name.. My SVNParentPath is /srv/svn/ and I created a directory /srv/svn/testproj and then ran svnadmin create /srv/svn/testproj Now i'm configuring my authorization file: [/] * = svnadmin = rw adusgi = rw [testproj:/svn/testproj] demada = rw degari = rw scarja = rw Now if I try to commit /svn/testproj using user svnadmin or adusgi all is fine. If I try for example demada it doesn't work... (I've run the htpasswd2 commands for the user obviously. The directory is correct or atleast thats how I use the directory with the SVNPath server thats already running, the part I think I'm getting wrong is the repo name, I just used the directory name but what am I really supposed to put there?? • How to install a desktop environment onto Ubuntu Server -- but without internet access or a CDROM?

  I am playing around with a computer which has no CDROM drive or internet access and I have installed Ubuntu Server onto it. I have that all up and running nicely but now I'd like to install Xfce, GNOME or something similar so I can load up a desktop environment from the command line if I wish. Obviously with internet access or a CDROM, this would be a simple task of using apt-get and it finding & retrieving the packages for me, I assume, but I do not have either. I do however have a USB drive and I have used Unetbootin to make it into a bootable drive with the Ubuntu Server disk image files on there. I have mounted the USB drive to /media/usb0 and tried the command "sudo apt-cdrom add -d /media/usb0" to get apt to recognise the USb drive as an "Ubuntu CD" -- a source of package files but apt-get doesn't seem to be finding Xfce.. I try "sudo apt-get install xfce" and "sudo apt-get install xfce4" but neither find the package.. I would prefer to have Xfce but GNOME would be OK too.. My question is, am I doing something wrong? I figured that the Ubuntu Server disk (or rather, my Ubuntu Server USB drive) might not have any desktop environment packages on there so I tried the Xubuntu Desktop disk too (again, from my USB drive). I tried "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" but it couldn't find the package - even though it is listed under the /casper/ directory in some MANIFEST file. Anyone see where I'm going wrong? Maybe apt-get install is looking somewhere other than my USB drive? Maybe my commands are wrong? Maybe the disks don't even have the desktop environments on!?   I regularly delete old kernels leaving only the latest two entries using Synaptic. I'm using Precise. However in my Grub "previous Linux version" menu there are quite a few entries labelled 2.6.8. • Stored proc running 30% slower through Java versus running directly on database

  Hi All, I'm using Java 1.6, JTDS 1.2.2 (also just tried 1.2.4 to no avail) and SQL Server 2005 to create a CallableStatement to run a stored procedure (with no parameters). I am seeing the Java wrapper running the same stored procedure 30% slower than using SQL Server Management Studio. I've run the MS SQL profiler and there is little difference in I/O between the two processes, so I don't think it's related to query plan caching. The stored proc takes no arguments and returns no data. It uses a server-side cursor to calculate the values that are needed to populate a table. I can't see how the calling a stored proc from Java should add a 30% overhead, surely it's just a pipe to the database that SQL is sent down and then the database executes it....Could the database be giving the Java app a different query plan?? I've posted to both the MSDN forums, and the sourceforge JTDS forums (topic: "stored proc slower in JTDS than direct in DB") I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to why this might be happening? Executing procedure..."); stmt.executeQuery(); sLogger.info("Procedure complete."); I have run sql profiler, and found the following: Java app : CPU: 466,514 Reads: 142,478,387 Writes: 284,078 Duration: 983,796 SSMS : CPU: 466,973 Reads: 142,440,401 Writes: 280,244 Duration: 769,851 (Both with DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS run prior to profiling, and both produce the correct number of rows) So my conclusion is that they both execute the same reads and writes, it's just that the way they are doing it is different, what do you guys think? It turns out that the query plans are significantly different for the different clients (the Java client is updating an index during an insert that isn't in the faster SQL client, also, the way it is executing joins is different (nested loops Vs. gather streams, nested loops Vs index scans, argh!)). Quite why this is, I don't know yet (I'll re-post when I do get to the bottom of it) Epilogue I couldn't get this to work properly. I tried homogenising the connection properties (arithabort, ansi_nulls etc) between the Java and Mgmt studio clients. It ended up the two different clients had very similar query/execution plans (but still with different actual plan_ids). I posted a summary of what I found to the MSDN SQL Server forums as I found differing performance not just between a JDBC client and management studio, but also between Microsoft's own command line client, SQLCMD, I also checked some more radical things like network traffic too, or wrapping the stored proc inside another stored proc, just for grins. I have a feeling the problem lies somewhere in the way the cursor was being executed, and it was somehow giving rise to the Java process being suspended, but why a different client should give rise to this different locking/waiting behaviour when nothing else is running and the same execution plan is in operation is a little beyond my skills (I'm no DBA!). As a result, I have decided that 4 days is enough of anyone's time to waste on something like this, so I will grudgingly code around it (if I'm honest, the stored procedure needed re-coding to be more incremental instead of re-calculating all data each week anyway), and chalk this one down to experience. I'll leave the question open, big thanks to everyone who put their hat in the ring, it was all useful, and if anyone comes up with anything further, I'd love to hear some more options...and if anyone finds this post as a result of seeing this behaviour in their own environments, then hopefully there's some pointers here that you can try yourself, and hope fully see further than we did.   The problem I am having is that when say for instance the user enters 7, then the display shows: 0 11 2 3 5 8 13 21 child ends. I cannot seem to figure out how to fix the 11 and why is it displaying that many numbers in the sequence! Can anyone help? The number of the sequence will be provided in the command line. For example, if 5 is provided, the first five numbers in the Fibonacci sequence will be output by the child process. Because the parent and child processes have their own copies of the data, it will be necessary for the child to output the sequence. Have the parent invoke the wait() call to wait for the child process to complete before exiting the program. • Drawing only part of a texture OpenGL ES iPhone

Any help appreciated.

• Why does my Doctrine DBAL query return no results when quoted?

  I'm using the Doctrine DataBase Abstraction Layer (DBAL) to perform some queries. For some reason, when I quote a parameter before passing it to the query, I get back no rows. When I pass it unquoted, it works fine. • Calling a function within a jQuery plug-in

  I am in the process of creating my first jQuery plug-in that will format numbers automatically to various international formats. There are a couple functions within the plug-in that strips the strings and re-formats the string that needs to be called from another jQuery script. Based on the plug-in structure below (let me know if you need the entire code) can I call and send the parameter(s) to the stripFormat(ii) and targetFormat(ii, iv) functions? Or do I need to change my plug-in structure and if so how? • Canvas draw calls are rendering out of sequence

  I have the following code for writing draw calls to a "back buffer" canvas, then placing those in a main canvas using drawImage. This is for optimization purposes and to ensure all images get placed in sequence. Before placing the buffer canvas on top of the main one, I'm using fillRect to create a dark-blue background on the main canvas. However, the blue background is rendering after the sprites. This is unexpected, as I am making its fillRect call first. Here is my code: render: function() { this.buffer.clearRect(0,0,this.w,this.h); this.context.fillStyle = "#000044"; this.context.fillRect(0,0,this.w,this.h); for (var i in this.renderQueue) { for (var ii = 0; ii < this.renderQueue[i].length; ii++) { sprite = this.renderQueue[i][ii]; // Draw it! this.buffer.fillStyle = "green"; this.buffer.fillRect(sprite.x, sprite.y, sprite.w, sprite.h); } } this.context.drawImage(this.bufferCanvas,0,0); } This also happens when I use fillRect on the buffer canvas, instead of the main one. Changing the globalCompositeOperation between 'source-over' and 'destination-over' (for both contexts) does nothing to change this. Paradoxically, if I instead place the blue fillRect inside the nested for loops with the other draw calls, it works as expected... Thanks in advance!
